21 Best Restaurants in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"I find Davenport’s food sublime: Chef Kevin Gibson showcases flawless, unfussy technique in dishes like fried crab balls with lemongrass, ginger, chili, and sesame-cabbage slaw; a radicchio salad with apple, walnuts, and frico; eggplant involtini; and lamb belly pinwheels with fregola and tzatziki. The bottle list will thrill wine nerds with everything from cult Champagnes to Loire discoveries and smaller Oregon producers, and the whole operation feels sophisticated but effortlessly approachable." - Hannah Wallace

We dined at Davenport last night after hearing consistently stellar reviews, and we were genuinely excited to experience it. Overall, it was a pleasant evening, though the food ultimately didn’t quite live up to the hype for us. We ordered the scallops, lamb loin, crab balls, and lasagna. Everything was cooked beautifully. The scallops and meats were prepared to perfection, which is clearly a strength of the kitchen. That said, the portions were quite small, and the flavors across the dishes felt more subtle than memorable. The crab balls, in particular, were served atop what felt like a glorified coleslaw, which didn’t add much depth. The lamb loin was well-executed, and the couscous accompanying it was good, though again not especially standout. Where Davenport really shines is in its service and beverage program. The service was warm, attentive, and professional, and the wine was excellent. The ambiance was nice and stylish, though not particularly distinctive. One notable plus was how quiet the restaurant was. On a Friday night, we were one of only two parties, which made for a calm and intimate dining experience, though it also gave pause given the restaurant’s reputation. Overall, Davenport delivers solid technique, great service, and a refined atmosphere. For us, however, the flavors didn’t quite justify the price point, and we’d likely choose to spend that amount elsewhere next time. A decent experience, just not one we’re eager to repeat — though I can see how others might enjoy it more than we did.

The food was brilliant, service wasn’t on point the night we went but there was only one server so have to cut him a break. Overall a great little spot that’s been there a while and doesn’t get much attention…it’s a great place for a date night or just a casual night out with friends for some very well made food and cocktails were delicious too! Bravo.

Two of us had the scallops. They were delicious, however a miniscule portion. We absolutely had room for desert, but went elsewhere for that as we feared how small the deserts might be if the scallops were any indication. I read all the 5 star reviews, might give it another chance, but with all the choice out there, maybe not.

Super friendly staff. The tapas style dishes were simply perfect. We ordered a half a dozen oysters and they’re served with horseradish, lemon on the side; super fresh. The scallops were delicious, as was the carpaccio. I had lamb for the first time and I’m so happy I did it here—the dish looked beautiful and taking that first bite was to die for.

The dining month menu was alright and the parking wasn't the funnest but the place was very nice. Staff was very friendly and the food was good. I especially enjoyed the scallops. We both picked the same options from the Portland dining month menu.

One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Incredible porcini mushroom crostini, fried crab dumplings with a huge amount of crabmeat, house-made pasta with savory chicken thigh and morels. Great wine list. Low-key but sophisticated, elite cooking. Truly one of the best restaurants in Portland.
