An Eater’s Guide to Halal Dining in Portland, Oregon

"This hot chicken chain born in a Los Angeles parking lot exclusively sources halal chicken for all of its locations, including its Northeast Sandy locale in Portland. Spice-coated chicken tenders are available as sandwiches or solo, with crinkle fries and pickles; the shop also offers sides like kale slaw, to round things out." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

This was my first time at Dave’s and it did not disappoint it was very good and quick as well! The 10 dollar chicken slider with fries is a great deal and a must try! As well the tenders with fries is a good option as well. The only reason why I’m giving a 4 is because I’ve had better chicken elsewhere but for what it was Dave’s is definitely up there

Google
It's a good place to get a quick bite to eat. We came to her as my friend hasn't tried them out yet. He ordered the 2 piece tender meal, and I had the tender and slider meal. The person working the counter was nice to us while we figured out what we wanted. The food came out pretty quick, which was nice.

Google
The food was excellent for fast food. Chicken had a nice crunch factor and tender and moist inside. I ordered 2 sliders and fries and could only eat one. Also a side of Mac that I split with my partner. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly. For the price I think you get your moneys worth. The restaurant was very clean as well as the restrooms. We will be back!

Wanted to Love It… But Didn’t I was so excited to try the cauliflower bites and mac and cheese — really wanted to add them to my favorites list. Sadly, not this time. The mac was creamy but lacked flavor, and the cauliflower bites tasted like they’d been hanging out in old oil. Fingers crossed for a better batch next time!

Google
" A novel and worthwhile experience " When I pulled in their parking lot I was fortunate to get their last parking spot as they were packed to the gills - a symptom of any successful business! In addition to their parking lot being full there was a line of 5 cars eagerly waiting to reach the speaker and place their order. Once I stepped inside I saw a dinning room filled with at least 30 patrons gleefully enjoying their food and fellowshiping with their friends. I was 3rd in line and patiently waiting for my chance to see what all the fuss was about, as this was my first time eating Dave's Hot Chicken. I ordered two sliders, fries and a drink for $18. They're able to sauce your chicken to varying levels of spiciness so even though I love hot food, I decided to start with the standard middle of the road "hot". The young man who took my order was EXCELLENT! He was friendly, answered a few questions with patience and respect, and even offered me their special sauce for my fries. All other staff members were dashing around to and fro and seemed very focused on filling the orders. This impressed me as it's common to see heads down and phones in hand. My food was available within 5 minutes and once returned to the counter to retrieve it I was instantly delighted by the pure size of the sandwiches! Since they're listed on the menu as sliders I expected these things to be puny, but these sandwiches were huge! As it turns out I could've gotten by with just one. The chicken breast tender was large, juicy, served hot, and packed with flavor. Their standard hot is very family friendly and next time I'll get their hottest offering. The fries tasted bomb too. They were seasoned very well, crispy on the outside and soft and steaming hot on the inside. They paired perfectly with their special sauce. Seeing as how I arrived at 9pm and they were still so busy, I'm unsure when their off peak hours actually are. I might have to wait several months before I return and hopefully catch them with fewer customers. The only demerit is that they don't offer any bone in chicken. I can only imagine it's due to the difference in cook times. If you like premium chicken sandwiches / tenders / nuggets you need to RUSH to Dave's Hot Chicken right away!

Google
Food and service is great. Food is fresh and delicious. Workers are really nice, shoutout Isaias he's a real one. Overall best Dave's I've been to the environment is really nice and they were the quickest to bring the food out usually it takes quite a while at other locations.

Yelp
Food was great! The restaurant was very clean and everyone was friendly. I'll definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
Chicken tenders 6 ways . But with thigh meat . That's why it's so juicy . My order of two tenders , fries , and a slice of bread was spendy . The ghetto art work inside is kinda a turn off. To me , there is better chicken elsewhere in PDX.

Yelp
Meh. I ordered the Medium chicken fingers. Nice big pieces. Taste was blah. Not bad if just want to try it out, once

Yelp
This location had a drive-thru, which was pretty neat. Ordering was easy, service was quick, and food was amazing. Can't beat it!

Yelp
Hands down. Best chicken sandwich I've had in a while! The chicken is crispy and fresh! I love how the meals are packed uppp in the box. The seating area outside is amazing! I ordered the slider, but received the single tender by accident. I had to go back in to get that slider that I ordered and the service was okay. It wasn't welcoming and they told me that'll work on my slider and to keep the single tender & to sit down; they'll let me know once it's finished. I waited for a longg time & went up to find out it was already finished with no announcement of it being ready. I guess they forgot, which was a bit frustrating but despite that, FOOD WAS GREAT.

Yelp
We decided to order the reaper sliders. We thought they would be much spicier than they were. The chicken overall was really tasty and we would totally return. The service was probably the best part of our experience...we wanted to change the order after it had already been placed and the staff was more than happy to help. The location is also convenient since there's parking.

Yelp
My son is a huge fan. I'm basing this off of his experience. Portions look healthy and very well seasoned. He went with Medium spice and seemed to truly enjoy it. The slider is much more than a slider as the strip looked more the size of pelican than chicken. You won't go hungry stopping by here. He also wanted a chocolate shake as well. Dave's seems like an overall crowd pleaser.

Amanda G.

Yelp
Service was unpleasant to say the least, not very welcoming environment. Unfortunately wait time was long

Yelp
Wow!! Chicken here is amazing and customer service is even better! The chicken in the sliders was tender and juicy. I loved the dry rub and the fries as well. The fries were nice and crunchy but also soft! When we came in the place was pretty busy but there's plenty of seating. My partner ordered for me and didn't realize there were pickles in the sandwich which I do not like. The server offered to replace my bun which was so kind of him. The Dave's sauce is delicious and goes well with all menu items! Will definitely have Dave's Hot Chicken again!

Yelp
I wanted to update my review after eating Dave's for a second time. The first time we had Dave's hot chicken, it was very average and over priced. On a recent exhausting day, my husband suggested we try it again as they are just up the street from us. This time, the food was excellent, some of the best chicken tenders I've had, very moist, perfect meat and a crispy exterior. I'm a spice wimp, but was still okay with the medium level. The fries were very crispy and tasty as well. I love the pickles, don't understand the need for the white bread, but it was okay. The pricing seems to have gone down. However, it's very high for the cauliflower items, sorry vegetarians! I'm hoping our experience doesn't mean they are inconsistent, but rather that they have gotten it together. Will definitely go again.

Yelp
Was out with a friend and discussing food spots around town that have opened since I last visited, Dave's came up and the sides were highly recommended. Thought I would give it a taste test and tried the Mac&cheese and the Kale Salad. Not a kale fan really but this side was pretty good! The M&C was also good, very rich and creamy. Didn't need anymore food but wouldn't have another opportunity to try so I did. Worth the visit.

Yelp
We were visiting Portland with family and our kids recommended this place to try. We loved it! If you are looking for a place to enjoy some delicious hot chicken sandwiches, fries, mac and cheese, and local beers, look no further than Dave's Hot Chicken. This fast-casual restaurant chain, which started as a pop-up in Los Angeles, has expanded to several locations across the US, including Portland, Oregon also, I found few in San Diego, which I was not aware before. It was on a weekday afternoon and place was clean and cozy atmosphere. The menu is simple but offers a variety of options for different spice levels, from No Spice to Reaper. I decided to take the Reaper challenge, which is the hottest level available, and ordered a slider, fries, and mac and cheese. I also got a local beer to wash it down, ordered a Hazy IPA and Hefenweizer just in case. The food arrived quickly and looked mouthwatering. The slider was a good size, with a crispy and juicy chicken tender coated in spice powder, sandwiched between two soft buns. The fries were seasoned well and came with a choice of dipping sauces. The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy, was just ok. The beer was cold and refreshing, and helped to cool down my lips, tongue, good pipe and rest of the ay down. The first bite of the slider was a blast of flavor and heat. The chicken was tender and moist, and the sauce was tangy and smoky, with a kick that made me sweat. The coleslaw and pickles added some crunch and freshness, and the buns were soft and fluffy. The slider was one of the best hot chicken sandwiches I have ever had, and I enjoyed every bite. The fries were crispy and tasty, and the mac and cheese was comforting and satisfying but bland for my taste buds. The beer was a perfect complement to the meal, and helped to quench my thirst. I finished the meal feeling full and happy, and proud of myself for completing the Reaper challenge. I was expecting the staff to congratulate me and give me a crown, atleast a sticker? But no one even checked me if I was alive. Dave's Hot Chicken is a great place to enjoy some spicy and satisfying food, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves hot chicken. Whether you are looking for a mild or a wild experience, Dave's Hot Chicken has something for everyone. Just be prepared to feel the heat!

Yelp
Good fried chicken sandwich, and you can modify the spice level to your liking. The sliders are big especially with the chicken piece. The chicken was juicy and crispy. Nice sauce on top with some coleslaw and pickles. Their special sauce is delicious with the fries. The pickles help lighten the meal. Orders were put out quickly and the staff were very friendly. We tried the no spice, mild, medium and hot. There was definitely a difference between the medium and hot spice level, and they have an even spicier ones for those who can handle spice. The macaroni and cheese was decent, nothing special but it was good. I really enjoyed their fries, very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The interior was very clean and modern and there's decent amount of parking. They even have a drive thru window too.
google avatar

Biggie L.

Yelp
The wait time here is not terrible, considering they are busy as heck. The chicken is Moist and flavorful and the breading has a delightful crunch. I love the pickles, not too salty of vinegary. It's cool they have varying levels of heat. I got the hot which had a pleasant amount of spice and heat. This is a cool little place but a bit loud inside, they do have outdoor dining. I can't imagine how busy they'd be if they had a drive thru! It's worth the wait.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
First visit to this location. Its got a cool, urban, graffiti decor. The dining area at this location is pretty small, and so is the parking lot. Although inside at lunch was quite empty, the drive-thru and take-out orders seemed steady, making for a bit of a wait for our food. Presentation was appealing, spice levels ordered were good, and fry portions large. Everything tasted good, on par with what you expect at a Dave's.
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect from this place, and was pleasantly surprised. The guy working was super friendly and did a great job of explaining the spice levels (actually a healthy does of caution for my double reaper order). He talked me in to splitting it with a milder option, and I can't say he was wrong. For ONCE a place brings some heat! Went "hot" for my sannich and reaper for my tender, and will for sure go that route again. Nice to have a little balance. The quality of the chicken was some of the best I've had in a long time, too. All around, enjoyed the food. I wish this place was more of a restaurant so you could enjoy an adult beverage with it, but it's close enough to grab for take out and eat at home. I'll make the trip over again.
google avatar

Sabrina K.

Yelp
Ordered pickup only to arrive & realize I had to go through the drive-thru to pick up my food which had ELEVEN cars in front of me! By the time I got my food & got home it was stone cold. I airfried my sandwich & fries briefly so they didn't dry out so now my meal was tepid. From what I could judge had I gotten the food fresh & warm it seemed pretty good for a late night Saturday, early Sunday morning. I give it 3 stars cuz cuz I think the food was fairly decent. WAY TOO MUCH SALT ON THE FRIES! Don't. bother with takeout on Saturday, at least cuz you still wait in the drive thru but instead of a warm meal you get a stone cold meal as a reward for calling your order in ahead of time.
google avatar

Maryam A.

Yelp
Hot chicken without lard! It's actually halal :o Definitely recommend getting the slider and tender so you can try multiple heat levels. Hot tip: mix honey with the Dave sauce. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Saahir J.

Yelp
I've gone to multiple Dave's Hot Chicken and I've loved it every time. I like to go with their #2 which contains 2 sliders and fries. The chicken is always super tender and the bread is nice and soft. The slaw and pickles add a lot to the sandwich and gives it some extra crunch and sourness. The fries are covered in a really nice seasoning that make them taste amazing and the Dave's sauce is the real deal. I like to add extra to my sandwich it's just too good. The service was also really nice, they were extremely polite and served with a smile. When it comes to hot chicken Dave's is always a safe bet and I'll always enjoy it. Tips: - Definitely get the sliders, the bread and toppings add a lot to the sandwich. - Always ask for more dave's sauce, they don't cost extra and really go well with both the chicken and fries - It's hot chicken so don't be afraid to go spicy!
google avatar

Randi J.

Yelp
I feel bad giving 1 star because the service was great and the flavor was great but the chicken was extremely weird. I kept having to pull pieces out of my mouth that looked and felt like plastic. There were so many pieces in each bite that just wouldn't break apart. I stretched them out with my fingers and it just looked really sketchy like fake chicken or something.
google avatar

Katarina W.

Yelp
Tried this place or the first time with the family and it did not disappoint. The chicken had so much flavor. We got the mild and the spice level was perfect for me. Just a little bit of heat but mostly it just added so much flavor. The sauces were good too. Definitely would recommend this place.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Oh man, Dave's Portland, what happened to your sliders? I lived next to the original East Hollywood location and went there religiously. The difference between this and that location is simply the buns. In East Hollywood, the bun on the slider was decadent, fluffy, firm, warm, and every hyperbole you could think of an artisanal bun like you got it from a local baker. The one here? Felt like it was shipped from Safeway at the lowest bid. It was flat, soggy, and overall depressing. Just check out my screenshot of the bun (mind you it was like there the second we got it, so we ended up just eating the chicken). Don't get me wrong, chicken is still good, but skip the slider and just get the tender if the effort is only in the chicken alone.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Where has this been my whole life. Definitely reminds me of my east coast Nashville times. Let's start here: fast food vibes, quick service, relatively affordable meals. Chicken was perfect. Spicy as hell but perfect. Cooked to perfection. And for my saucy guys - so much sauce. You'll love it. Seriously if you like spicy chicken sandwiches- go here. Better than Chick-fil-A. (Fight me)
google avatar

Maro S.

Yelp
A mixed experience, but the chicken is very good. + flavorful, juicy chicken tenders + dry rub! Not drowning in sauce! + very friendly service + used my name when handing me the food, nice touch + you can mix heat levels within an order, so I got one med and one hot -- they have seven levels, I think?! - why couldn't I just use the drive thru? The strange extra step of waiting on a curve and ordering with a human standing at my door looking cold was odd since it was not super busy or anything. - they were supposed to sub slaw and didn't - the fries are just ok - MY GOD THE PACKAGING. I was not expecting a styrofoam container inside a heavy-duty plastic bag for two chicken tenders, but here we are. I'd never heard of this chain before they started setting up in my neighborhood, and I was excited for an upgrade from the Wendy's that preceded it in that spot. Definitely an improvement in quality and choice, but I'm not sure about all the packaging and extra steps for to-go chicken. They are just opening, though, and maybe some of this other stuff will iron out.
google avatar

Ray V.

Yelp
a lot of bang for your buck. They were doing a brisk drive thru business while we were there. Not a ton of in store people but enough. They only have tenders, even for the sliders but make no mistake these are large tenders, equal to 2 or 3 depending on where you go. We went with the hot level which had a nice flavor. For my wife and I it wasn't hot especially in the slider form. In the just the tenders it was a little hotter. Next time we'll be trying the extra hot, and there will be a next time. Going to take it in stages before signing the waiver form for REAPER, We both got the mac n cheese instead of fries and it was decent. I will agree with one of the other reviews, the sliders could use a bit more of the slaw on them. The chicken was moist and flavorful, so definitely worth your stopping by no matter what heat level your going for.
google avatar

Carlton C.

Yelp
Clean restaurant with friendly service. This is my second visit to a Dave's, the first time was in California. The food is consistently good. The spice levels are true to their names, and the fries are good, the pickles are a perfect accompaniment. Keep up the good work Dave's!
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Dave's hot chicken was NOT hot...metaphorically speaking. The spicy chicken slider was indeed hot, but very underwhelming. It was in the same category of fast food spicy chicken. Juicy chicken and crispy on the edges. However, it was not very impressive. Comparing this spot to the other fastfood spicy hot chicken sandwiches it is on par. Thus, this deserves a solid 3, nothing more, nothing less. Good amount of parking and has a drive through. I'd say that you should check it out if you are nearby, but I wouldn't encourage you to get out of your way to this establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
I've seen a lot of reviews confused about why white bread comes with the chicken strips and I just gotta say "If you're out of touch, just SAY THAT!". I'm originally from Tennessee (Nashville is the birthplace of hot chicken) and all across the deep south, hot chicken dominated before eventually being popularized nationwide leading to the creation of this SoCal (East Hollywood-based) chain. In the south, it's very common to be served a piece of plain white bread with anything from hot chicken, to regular fried, to catfish, bass, and hot links. The fact that Dave's includes white bread with their strips is homage to hot chicken's roots in southern Black cooking. With all that said, let's get into the service, ambiance, and food at this location. Typical of any Dave's franchise location, you'll find urban decor inside and out. In terms of service, the workers were friendly and efficient. I've reviewed Dave's before and, again, this location is no different than what you'd expect with quality of meat, flavor, and presentation. From a Tennesseean familiar with hot chicken from corner stores, gas stations, and mom and pop shops, this restaurant chain is decent for what you'd expect from fast food. It's not the best chicken ever but it's damn-good for fast food. What other major chain is doing hot chicken like Dave's? Be realllll.
google avatar

Darlene D.

Yelp
First time coming here and the service was spectacular. Awesome environment, ate every last bite. Wettest mac and cheese, hottest, and crispiest chicken. 10/10 will be back. Thanks to Lucas for being patient with use being first timers, super stoked to have DHC here in Portland!
google avatar

Yelp
Dave's Hot Chicken is popping up all over Portland! You can't miss their vibrant buildings, especially this NE Sandy location with all the graffiti outside and in, most portraying aportland Icons giving this national chain a local vibe. But your reading this to find out about the food so let's get to it. First, some context. I'm not a fast food person, rarely go to the famous burger or taco or chicken chains. I'd rather go To a food truck for fresh, fast food. But I tried Dave's a few weeks ago in Beaverton and I was impressed. So when I saw this new location on my daily drive back from the gym, I stopped in. The menu is small - sliders (which are basically full size fried chicken sandwiches) and tenders (large pieces of chicken breasts) and sides. They do fried chicken and don't deviate, which is a good thing. This time I went with spicy, and even though I love heat and spice, it was just too much for me. Next time I'll go back to mild so that the heat compliments rather than distracts from the chicken, which is both crisp and juicy. The tenders come with white bread, a southern thing, but I don't eat it, and krinkle fries. Sliders come with kale slaw and fries. I go with the combo which is one slider and one tender with fries and kale slaw. Mac & Cheese is also available as a side but I haven't tried it. Located in what was a Wendy's, this location has a drive through which is a huge plus. If I get the food to take home, I always open the packaging so the heat doesn't create steam which kills the crispy outside!
google avatar

Jodi W.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood. I was excited to see a new resturant. I have come for dine in, take out and drive through. Every experience I've had here has been varied. Only the last couple times (2/24) has it been consistent when coming through the drive through. I always get the single tender in hot. The hot is a bit spicy. But the slice of white bread is nice if it gets a little too hot. The pickles also are great! I love the combo with the spicy chicken. The last two times I have come through the chicken was cooked great. Had a little crisp to it and was moist on the interior. I wish the soda pop wasn't so expensive. They should sell the wet nap for Togo orders because they can be messy with the spice on them. They do always give plenty of napkins which is nice.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Food was really good. Light mild is still a little spicy for my taste so most likely trying the no spice version. Dave's sauce is really good also, too bad they don't have ranch dressing for a side.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
We had our math reunuion and chicken. The chicken was good. I liked how the DoorDash orders did not need to wait around.
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
I don't eat a lot of hot chicken but I do like a crunch in the breading. Maybe it was an execution thing but my 2 chicken fingers had almost no crunch at all. Other than that, it was ok. The crinkle fries were awesome. I don't get the white bread under the chicken. Finger sandwich? Maybe a SOCAL thing? LOL I'll give it another try and get the sliders.
google avatar

Vi E.

Yelp
Pretty damn good. This chicken is SEASONED. Definitely get some honey with it to even out the saltiness. I got mild and it had a little kick. The "sliders" aren't sliders, they are a whole ass sandwich. I could only eat one and was stuffed. 2 people can definitely share the 2 slider combo with maybe an extra side. 1 person would be fine with 1 slider meal. The staff was super friendly. Drive thru is kinda weird, they ask for your name ( I think so they can refer to you?) and the window is a door they come in and out of. Will definitely be back, want to try the different sides! Prices are not bad, you get a lot of food.
google avatar

Sterling P.

Yelp
Was there again last week. Same smiling faces serving great chicken. Hot on the outside hot on the inside, great fries! Everything is still first class for a fast food restaurant.
google avatar

Nicolette S.

Yelp
on god, , no cap. 12/10 would eat here again! bring your mom, dad, brother, sister, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, baby momma, baby daddy, need i say more????
google avatar

Brandi P.

Yelp
Took my nephew there last weekend and he said it's the best chicken he's ever had!!! He said it was juicy and very flavorful. He got mild and said it still had a kick but wasn't unbearable. He's depressed we don't have one back home. I'm a baby so I didn't try it but he was super impressed.
google avatar

Toi I.

Yelp
Clackamas location is always spot on. This new location not so much. Every time Ive ordered from this location it seems like the chicken is bland. One of the reasons I liked them was for their light mild seasoning but last two orders have lacked the seasoning and tbh the chicken itself without seasoning isnt good. I would encourage people to go inside and order from this location do not order through a delivery app bcus chances are its going to be soggy and bland

Michelle G.

Yelp
Every time I order delivery from this location, the order is WRONG. Most frequently they do not add the cheese. My order last night has 3 items. 2 of them had cheese and the 3rd did not. I love the food but despise the inaccuracy with delivery
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
Wonderful food and staff. Highly recommend. Mild seasoning is just spicy enough and the fries are INCREDIBLE.

myiesha e.

Yelp
At night they lock the doors, so if you prepay and order ahead you are stuck in the same extremely long slow drive through line. Except you already paid and cant just leave and go to a different location. So if you want some late night dave's, save yourself the trouble and just go to a different location.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Cool artwork. Cooler music. Finally trying it before it opens in Salem. Hope to try the whole menu. Thanks for the levels of heat.
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
Legit heat and high quality chicken! Tried all spice levels from lite mild to extra hot and we weren't disappointed. Extra hot had heat, but maintained flavor and gave the good forehead sweats. The staff is super friendly and helpful with explaining the menu. You can order multiple spice levels on each combo which makes for great taste testing. We will definitely be back! Love the music and the graphics in and outside the building.
google avatar

Harneet K.

Yelp
I personally LOVE dave's hot chicken however the service at this location isn't good. I've come to this location 3 times but every time the service isn't up to par with other locations. Once I came for an online pickup order but the employee at the front couldn't understand what to do. The second time I came, a different employee had a lot of attitude. Only reason its a 2 star is because they have a drive thru which the Clackamas location does not have.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Yep - Dave's is incredible - probably the best chicken sandwich i've ever had! Their produce and quality of meat are top notch and their staff is very very friendly - they treat their employees well!! Their prices are average but for the quality it's definitely worth $10 for a chicken sandwich meal!!

Yelp
Very tasty. Wasn't as hot as I was led to believe, but food is great. Also, the have cauliflower wings. I am very happy when you offer veggie items that taste great.

Yelp
My son loves going to Daves Hot Chicken...and since I dont eat chicken there was nothing there for me. Until now. Go and eat the cauliflower slider while the rest of your chicken eating friends do their thing. It was crispy and spicy with all the same goodness. The price is comparable to the chicken sandwich, which doesnt feel right but....its pretty good.

Yelp
Wish there was more veggie options here, but the kale slaw and the fries are on point. The space is open and bright and inviting and they seem to be a well oiled machine in the drive thru lane. Would love a vegan option in 2023!
