The 38 Best Restaurants in Cleveland, Ohio | Eater

"As the number of Jewish delis continues to nosedive across the nation, Davis Bakery keeps bucking the trend. This family-owned operation has been a fixture in Cleveland for a staggering 85 years; according to second-generation owner Carl Davis, the business’s longevity is largely due to the bakery’s decision to sidestep the full-service model in favor of more efficient over-the-counter service. Lines queue up to that counter for hearty sandwiches on fresh-baked seeded rye bread, filled with corned beef, pastrami, braised brisket, and tongue. Must-try dish: Save room after your sandwich for some airy coconut bars or flaky Russian tea biscuits." - Douglas Trattner

I’m not saying this gluten-free chocolate earthquake cookie changed my life… but I am saying I heard a choir of angels and momentarily blacked out from joy. Davis, you beautiful sorcerer of baked goods, you’ve officially broken the laws of dessert physics. Gluten-free?! Lies. This cookie has no business being this good without gluten. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you snuck in some dark cookie magic from the forbidden scrolls of Snackalot. 10/10 would sell state secrets for another bite. 😭🤩🫶💫😇🥳😙🤓 I know I should leave my husband some, but good lord in heaven I don’t think any will be left by the time he gets home!

Google
Amazing, first time going here and it’s was just amazing the best deli I’ve ever had. My sandwich the turkey bacon avocado was the best. The bakery was also good, I got the cream puff and it was amazing. Would fully recommend people to go here for food and some desert.

Google
I picked up a birthday cake and assorted pastries. Everything got rave reviews from the recipient, especially the chocolate cake and cherry turnover. The staff was really friendly. You could tell there were several regulars and I can see why.

Google
From the minute, you walk in, it’s like comfort food heaven. You have very experienced people who’ve been working in the bakery and deli business for a long long time. Food is so good sandwiches are a must corn beef is fabulous. The guy behind the counter are very nice so are the ladies behind the bakery. They have seating in the back if you’re have any time to actually sit and enjoy your food before you gotta run away.

The oven roasted turkey sandwich was delicious. The pickles are perfect. Our grandson really enjoyed the bagel and cream cheese and my husband loved his Reuben. We will be back on our way to Pittsburgh again for sure!

Davis Bakery is a delightful gem that truly embodies the charm of a local bakery. From the moment you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere makes you feel right at home. The aroma of freshly baked goods is intoxicating, drawing you in to explore the wide array of treats on display. The selection of baked goods is impressive, featuring everything from artisanal breads and pastries to delectable cakes and cookies. Each item is crafted with care, showcasing high-quality ingredients and a commitment to traditional baking methods. The cinnamon rolls are a must-try—fluffy, sweet, and perfectly spiced. The cakes are not only visually stunning but also incredibly moist and flavorful. In addition to their baked goods, Davis Bakery also offers a fantastic deli menu that deserves recognition. The deli features a variety of sandwiches, salads, and hearty soups, all made with fresh ingredients. The sandwiches are particularly noteworthy, with generous portions and a range of options to suit different tastes. The classic deli meats are complemented by house-made spreads and toppings, making each sandwich a satisfying meal. Customer service at Davis Bakery is exceptional. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to offer recommendations based on your preferences. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’re treated with kindness and genuine enthusiasm. The bakery also offers a cozy seating area, making it a perfect spot to enjoy your treats with a cup of coffee or a delectable deli meal. It’s an ideal place for casual meetings or a relaxing afternoon with friends. Overall, Davis Bakery is a standout establishment that combines quality, flavor, and a welcoming environment. Whether you're in the mood for a quick snack, a delicious deli lunch, or planning a special occasion, you can’t go wrong here. Highly recommended!

Google
Good deli to visit, but regular versus king size Sandwich looked a little suspect. They seemed to be the same size other than price. I will try again and update the review. Update. Return visit was a good experience. Tried the Turkey Bacon Avacado regular sandwich, and it was great. Neither time was I able to watch said weight of meat used on sandwich, but I will say there was plenty of turkey. This will be a goto spot to try all of the other sandwiches on the menu.

Google
This was a great find. It’s hard to find a good deli sandwich, especially in some of fancier areas where this is located. Great service, great selection and most important, great food. Will definitely return next time I’m in the area.

Yelp
A neighborhood staple, the staff at Davis Bakery are more like family, they know what you want and need as soon as you hit the case. Sunday mornings are perfect for Davis Bakery, a combination of savory and sweet. We ordered bagel sandwiches, made to order, the lox bagel was incredible. Best part, warm chocolate chip cookies to end a meal.

Yelp
Throughout my life, I've followed Davis Bakery from its Cedar Center location to its current spot on Chagrin Boulevard. I am going on the record to state: There is no rye bread that can match the crunchy crust and the perfectly baked bread with seeds. When you ask for extra lean corned beef, you get perfect slices that stay intact--no crumbling. The potato salad is delectable with a taste that I've never found anywhere else. The bakery counter is a must. My faves are the Russian tea biscuits and coconut bars, but the delectable choices are endless. Make this deli your prime stop!

Yelp
The service was really good and fast, the line was long and I started to leave but I decided to stay. I ordered the Rueben Sandwich on Rye. AMAZING!! Best deli/bakery in the Cleveland area. This place will not disappoint you. The atmosphere was like a busy but efficient deli.

Yelp
Davis Bakery is at the top of my list to visit anytime I'm in the Cleveland area. Luckily they ship nationally, so I've been able to order some of my favorite things to California. But, there's nothing like getting it fresh from the deli/bakery. On our last visit my brother and I ordered corned beef sandwiches and bought a variety of pastries. The black and white cookies and coconut bars are our absolute favorites. The sandwich was amazing and I'm making this my reminder to get one every visit from now on. The team there is always friendly and helped us grab everything quickly. They also have indoor and outdoor dining but we've always taken our orders to go.

Yelp
Analysts a better option than Corky's was. Excellent bakery and a very solid deli. Good size sandwiches and nice people to boot. My only issue is the potato salad is too sweet for me but many love it. Try it it's very good

Yelp
I've been coming here for a while. Everyone is friendly and everything is great! My only complaint is how much of my money they get, because I can never just buy ONE thing!
google avatar

Yelp
We moved to Cleveland in 2019 and this has become our favorite bakery! The choices are diverse, the prices are good, and it just feels like home. The workers are so nice and welcoming and start to become your friends! I cut back on sugary treats about a year ago so I haven't been as much as I used to, but I still go back every now and then for a wonderful cheat treat. I highly recommend this place to everyone, especially to those on the east side.

Linda S. M.

Yelp
I've been going to Davis Bakery/Deli for a few years now while in town and the food and service is great as usual. I always buy deli sandwiches and bakery. It's a bustling, relaxed place and the employees are very professional & friendly. Fantastic kosher foods and other delicious items.
google avatar

Yelp
It was okay. I had breakfast here with a co-worker who is a big fan of the bakery. The sandwich was oka, but not for $5. Could have used more ham and some mayo! The rest of the bakery items in the case looked really good. I've had the coconut bars from here and they're delicious. I'll be back, maybe for some baked goods next time.

Thomas S.

Yelp
we go in for the bread and bakery. I bought tea biscuits in poppyseed, and apricot. 6 raisins in the poppyseed but 73 raisins in the 3 inch square tea biscuit. it should have been called raisin tea biscuit.

Nandor K.

Yelp
There are days were things taste fresh and well balanced. Then days where it's overly sweet and just bland. I'd try to find another stop if possible but it's okay.
google avatar

Linda F.

Yelp
Worth a several hour trip for their pastries. Try their coconut bars or their gigantic deli sandwiches. SO good!

Tim J.

Yelp
Rudest group of people I have come across in a long time. I can stay home and get ignored with an attitude. Unbelievable really, obviously won't go back. they surely dont need me but F them any how

Yelp
long standing business in Woodmere Village. Excellent Corn beef and popular among the locals

Paul R.

Yelp
Great sandwich. Great pastry. Local institution. Highly recommended. Get there early for the apple fritters!
google avatar

Patrick G.

Yelp
A mandatory stop on our way to and from Cincy. Staff is so friendly. Love everything on the menu behind both counters.

Yelp
This review is for the bakery, not deli. Everything I had here was prepared impeccably even. Kichel were crispy and flavorful, not too sweet despite the sugar coating. Rye had a really deep and immediate flavor, and managed to hold up ok for a few days. Coconut cake, while not really my usual thing, was delightfully moist. And the famous Russian Tea Biscuits, while not as poppy-filled as I'd expected, were full of flavor with just the right amount of flake to the pastry.

Roger H.

Yelp
Excellent deli sandwiches and pastries. Really nice people working here. Simple as that but yelp wants more characters in a review so here they are...
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
1949'er was a nice breakfast burrito w two eggs, avocado, cheese, maybe some bacon, and a spicy crema wrapped in a tortilla. Coulda used some mayo or sour cream but wasn't bad at all.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
All I wanted was some nice Jewish style deli, which just doesn't exist in Cincinnati. My wife and I took a corned beef road trip and Davis really met the need. My new yorker sandwich was exactly what I was looking for. The sandwich was great. My wife's chicken matzoh ball soup was yummy and we took some treats on the road. I forsee more roadtrips to come!

Louise H.

Yelp
I'm a recent transplant from the Southwest side of Cleve. Had good lunch w a friend here a few weeks ago. My brother drove in from NY for a visit today n wanted a great corned beef sandwich. What he got was horrible. 1/3 of the meat was fat! He didn't want to return it but I couldn't let it pass. I took the plate of fat back up to the deli counter. The guys apologized n offered a half sandwich to go which we couldn't use. I sat back down to catch up w my brother but there were construction workers using saws 5' from where we sat n we couldn't hear ea other. We left pretty disgusted. Must do better!

Yelp
I grew up on Russian tea biscuits, AKA kolachi, and (corn) rye bread from Davis Bakery when I lived in Mayfield Heights OH in the 50's and 60's. I'm thrilled to be able to order both online!
google avatar

Yelp
Thank God for people & places like those of Davis Bakery! Personable, funny, & caring staff, fresh sandwiches, dietary-restrictive (vegan) options, and a classic selection of baked goods makes me wish I could give David Bakery 6 stars! Must haves: the rye bread & onion bagels! Awesome they have this jalapeño mustard-it is a 10/10.
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
This is one of those places that you can ask for recommendations from the people around you because they are probably the local that has been coming for a while. I think that if I lived in the area, I would too. The staff is really kind. Each sandwich gets a pickle and a cookie (and a smile), and because I was splitting it with my wife, the gentleman cut our sandwich in half and gave us each our own cookie and pickle. That is the kind of hospitality you can expect here! The food itself was neatly and carefully made. A bit bland for my taste; but a by-product of all the ingredients actually being food instead of some processed mess.

George S.

Yelp
Very good pastrami, good service, nice place, clean good selection ........ .........free cookie was nice

Mike B.

Yelp
Always fresh with great deli and baked goods with no preservatives! People always friendly.
google avatar

Gracie W.

Yelp
Such a great deli and bakery, they never disappoint. Everyone is always very nice and the food is made fresh and fast. Joe's Italiano is my favorite with the salty salami and bavarian ham balanced with the fresh lettuce and tomato, nicely toasted sourdough and the completed with the Italian dressing, and can't forget their great pickles.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Raw challah dough available on Fridays (call ahead to reserve) you take home and bake. Make your own simple egg wash, sprinkle with sesame &/or poppy seeds and let it rise a couple hours first. Bake and let that fresh baked challah aroma fill your home. Gud Shabbos!
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Beautiful custom cakes for any occasion! They are extremely moist and cater to any needs you may have.

Kathryn B.

Yelp
Quality of sandwiches was terrible. Hardly any corned beef on the sandwiches and the ham sandwich we got looked like someone sat on it. Hope this isn't an indication of what's to come without Corky's.
google avatar

Jeff P.

Yelp
Was hungry for Breakfast this morning and the light bulb went off to go to Davis Bakery. Decided on a Nova Lox Bagel it was so good!!!
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
I have to update my review. This place opens at 7a.m., so I stopped in for. Corned beef on rye with spicy mustard and extra pickle. The lady behind the bakery counter FORCED ME to get a nut covered cinnamon roll and a bear claw!! I had to eat EVERYTHING when I got to work. Just saying, I feel really happy...
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
I think I found my favorite deli. It is old school where the deli meats are on point and they are tasty. The staff is old school but give you that hurry up and order vibe but they love their good food and service is on point. My hot pastrami sandwich is the best I have had since moving to the Midwest.

Chad H.

Yelp
We made our annual xmas trip to woodmere which always includes a visit to one of our favorite bakeries. The russian tea buscuits are always excellent as are other baked goods. My daughter loves the matza ball soup too. They have a nice deli counter as well.
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
The BEST bakery in town. The pastries are so fresh and buttery and impossible to put down. The chocolate chip pastries are amazing. It is hard to not buy more than one pack. Also the peanut butter brownies are great! And the staff is so friendly and sweet!
google avatar

Edmund Y.

Yelp
The pastries have a strange taste that is hard to explain. I used to go to Davis Bakery when I was a child so I was very excited to see that it was still in business. The nostalgia is gone after I actually tasted it. Sorry Davis Bakery. You are not the business!!!

Nash H.

Yelp
Average deli but we don't have many others to choose from in CLE so I figured why not ... 1st off the staff is beyond rude to the customers. I have no words for the terrible customer service. The older lady who tries to force feed customers samples is a lunatic and rude as well. She threw one of the bakery items at a customer. So sad how unwelcome they make people feel even if they are short staffed which is their problem. Get it together people! My recommendation is to clean house and hire new staff.

Robert S.

Yelp
Earlier today I called Davis Bakery to place a carry out order. After placing the order, I said, "Can I pay you for that now?" The woman who took my order replied, "I would prefer that you not." No explanation offered, just "I would prefer that you not." That is just incredibly rude! At that point I insisted that she take my credit card info, which she did. Before the call ended, she said, "Because this needs to be refrigerated, it will be in the back [of the store]." When I got there and told them my order was in back, they couldn't find it . . . . because it had been put up front! To make matters even worse, I then discovered that the woman who had taken the order hadn't even processed the transaction! Obviously, the whole point of providing my credit card info by phone was to be able to pick up the food without having to wait in line to have a credit card charged! I just cannot get over the rudeness and incompetence of the people who work here! Jack's Deli and Corky and Lenny's are both much better. I will never step foot in Davis Bakery ever again!

Yelp
Ambiance: The place is a hodgepodge of different setups including a deli counter, bakery counter, and restaurant seating nestled in the back. They seem to operate pretty independently of each other however. The service at the dessert counter was a little lacking as the lady felt like being at work was the last thing she wanted to do. Food: I got a sampling of pastries including an apple fritter, cherry turnover, apricot Russian tea biscuit, and triple berry bar. All-in-all everything was great! The turnover was flaky, airy, and generously filled with a standard sweet cherry filling. The apricot filling tasted fresh and the basic biscuit texture which was also used in the berry bar was crumbly and buttery. The star of the show was the apple fritter which was pillowy soft in the center but had a perfectly lightly crisped and caramelized exterior. The only thing that would have made the fritter any better would be if they were fresh out of the oven and still lightly warm instead of being lightly chilled in their display case. Overall I thought every item was well executed and tasted exactly how I hoped they would taste. You can definitely expect me coming back here for a pastry fix!

Yelp
Tribe Sandwich is one of the best sandwiches in Cleveland! Staff is very nice, everybody seemed to be in a good mood. Made my day!
google avatar

Sabra Chicki D.

Yelp
Davis Bakery is the home of the famous (at least to me) coconut bars. Long cubes of either yellow or chocolate cake dipped in a lite chocolate syrup and coated in tiny slivers of coconut. They are to die for! They come from Cleveland, Ohio fresh as they send them Fedex. I've ordered from them for at least 30 years for events all over the Midwest and my mother and grandmother bought them there too. They are simply the best!

Laurel M.

Yelp
Always good service. Great selection of pastries and terrific sandwichs and soups, especially split pea. The bread pudding and "chocolate radio bars" are a chocolate lovers dream. Love the rye bread and fresh challah.

Brent L.

Yelp
Best ryes I have had Large and small rye loafs Raisin pumpernickel and corn rye breads are great Deserts are plentiful a

Maureen Y.

Yelp
Greatest deli in Ohio. We stop by every time we pass through the state. The deli man is great for suggestions and while waiting for them to hand carve your deli sandwich the bakery ladies will tempt you with delicious free fresh hot samples. Tried the artisan bread and fell in love. She than informed me fresh giant Challah loaves were coming out of the oven, who could resist? The Russian rugalach is a house specialty I always get as well as the Chinese marbled almond chocolate buttercream cookie. Yum but they might rename to Ukraine and Asian? Nonetheless the deli is an original local old school business with delicious fresh treats, helpful if overly tempting samples, and wonderful smells. Saw the staff making catering trays for some lucky event probably it makes for a great holiday/sweet table addition. Save your local delis they are the best.

Scott L.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and good customer service. I had the Philly and it was good and a cupcake.
google avatar

Nikki T.

Yelp
Stopped in and got a breakfast everything bagel witch salmon, scrambled egg and cream cheese and a poppyseed Danish. I should of just got a standard chocolate chip cookie or brownie but there are many options it is easy to get excited about everything. The Danish was not for me, I like poppyseed but this was different and almost tasted more sweet and fruity then poppyseed if that makes sense. So that's where I went wrong. The breakfast sandwich was just okay alot of cream cheese and I'm all for the spreads and the dips but just wasnt feeling this sandwich. There is a variety of deli sandwiches and daily sandwich specials. Alot to offer here. I think I just ordered wrong.

Yelp
We recently had a huge delivery sent to us for a family member in recovery. To my knowledge, the sender paid a hefty delivery fee. We expected the delivery "after lunch" -- and it didn't arrive until almost 6:30 pm. This might not sound like a huge deal, but when you're relying on a delivery during a time of need, it makes a big difference for the food to come when they say it's coming. Overall, the food that was delivered to us was delicious. Fantastic cold cuts that are gourmet-quality, memorable pastries, excellent bread and delicious soup help Davis Bakery live up to its name. The roast beef and corned beef were lean, tender, and made wonderful sandwiches. It's hard to fight the quality of food here, just be wary of the delivery service if you need it time-sensitive. Otherwise, go for the delivery if you can spare the time or the people you're sending to won't care when it arrives.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Delicious deli, very reasonably priced, quick and easy service. Haven't had a chance to try the bakery goods yet but I definitely will soon!

Carly P.

Yelp
I've placed many large orders here in the past and today I called to ask about placing an order for a tray of cinnamon rolls. However, the woman on the phone was incredibly rude and condescending. Their full menu is not online so I did not know they had multiple kinds in cinnamon rolls. And this woman made absolutely zero attempt to explain it to me. She even went as far to say "so again I ask what you want or do you just not come here?" I was simply just trying to understand and pay them for their services. Well you can guarantee I won't be coming here anymore. I understand staffing in restaurants is difficult at this time, but it takes zero effort to be nice. The food is good but it's not worth feeling belittled for it.
