We recently attended a wedding catered by Dawat and despite being underwhelmed we decided to give it a fair chance, traveling almost 2 hours in order to taste the food again after hearing from locals that it is indeed very good and after seeing multiple videos online of the “viral” £2.49 kebab roll.
I am partial to a kebab roll, so when the craving struck we went.
The restaurant was relatively busy for a Monday night and the entryway was quite a kerfuffle with multiple parties sitting waiting for takeaways. However, when we made it through, we were seated right away.
We ordered:
The £36.99 mixed grill
A kebab roll
A special chicken curry
Daal
Plain rice
Chips
Jug of lassi
Extra naan
All of this came to about £86 which overall I don’t think is too bad.
The mixed grill was ok, the meat was in general tender and tasted good. I enjoyed the fried fish on this option which was a nice touch.
My biggest issue was that the lamb chops were burnt and the quality appeared to be poor as the bones were shattered and the meat very thin.
I have also inserted a picture of a piece of the chop meat which was frankly inedible due to being cremated.
Ordinarily we would have sent this back, but given the circumstances (tired and hungry children, plus a long drive home), we decided to put up with it, eat what we can and leave.
The kebab roll was good and satisfied the craving. The combination of the sauces, salad and naan worked very well with the kebabs.
My qualm with this was that the kebab roll actually doesn’t appear on the restaurant menu at all, but when we asked if they serve it in house, they said yes, we surely ordered it.
When the bill arrived the kebab roll was £5.99. The board above the counter as you enter lists the kebab roll as £2.49 and this is the only place where we could see the price listed anywhere other than online where it is also only listed as £2.49 as far as I can see.
When my husband questioned this on paying, he was told that the board is the takeaway menu. Fair enough, in which case I expect the in house menu to correctly and honestly list the price at £5.99. The worker also went on to say that the £2.49 price is actually for students? Again, this seems inconsistent to me because many of the people I have seen online consuming this “London cheap eat” are certainly not students.
The issue is not the price being £5.99, this is the standard going rate for a kebab roll and I am happy to pay this. It is simply the inconsistency and lack of transparency that I found in the situation quite frustrating.
The curries were both fine, tasty enough, but they didn’t blow me away. I found the prices quite expensive for the portion sizes for sure.
The naan is also fine, but doesn’t have the traditional tandoor char that I’m after.
The chips and rice were good, can’t go too wrong there.
The lassi was actually quite enjoyable, sweet, but not too creamy or yogurty which is my preference.
I did appreciate that there wasn’t any music playing in the restaurant which is why I marked the atmosphere relatively high.
