Day and Night Café – Houston, TX
Black-owned gem on Almeda with soul, flavor, and Southern hospitality.
Let me start by saying the food was legit and our waitress was the real MVP. Even with a rough situation, she stayed calm, courteous, and compassionate—she gets a full 5 stars without hesitation. That said, we did hit a bump in the road. Due to a technical malfunction, we ended up waiting an hour and a half for our food. We watched folks who came in after us eat, laugh, and roll out while we sat tight. We kept the faith, but it wore thin after a while.
The managers were cool about it—they came through, knocked our bill down to $42, and honored the 15% gratuity, which we appreciated. We didn’t get everything we ordered, but the service from our waitress and the manager’s understanding helped soften the blow.
Now to the food breakdown:
Smashburger – Juicy and flavorful. The patty was on point, but the mayo-based sauce didn’t hit for me. Still a solid 4/5.
Red Velvet Waffles – Light, fluffy, and sweet. They’re on the smaller side but you get four. I had my eye on the apple pie waffles, but that wait time kept me from pulling the trigger. 4.5/5
Fried Okra – Crispy with good texture, but needed more seasoning. You can taste the potential though. 3/5
Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls – They were decent, not bad, just didn’t wow me. 3/5
Onion Rings – Sadly never made it to the table, so no rating on that one.
Final Take:
Day and Night Café has a vibe and I still prefer it over spots like Denny’s or Waffle House. It’s a great pick for date night or dining in when you’ve got time. For everything else, I’d recommend ordering ahead and picking up to skip any surprises.
I'll be back—but I’m definitely hoping for a smoother ride next round.
