The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"West Seventh’s cozy, quaint Day by Day Cafe dishes up classic American breakfast dishes: eggs Benny, corned beef hash, homemade granola, buttermilk short stacks. Highlights are the homemade buckwheat pancakes, the French toast, the koi pond on the patio, and the early bird specials (Day by Day opens at 7 a.m. daily)." - Stacy Brooks

The Best Affordable Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Head to Day by Day Cafe on West Seventh Street for a classic eggs-and-bacon breakfast around the $10 mark. Other dishes — like the country-fried steak and biscuits and gravy — are just a few dollars more, though the best deal on this menu is the early bird special, a diner-style breakfast platter of eggs, potatoes, sausage, or bacon, and pancakes for $10.99 on weekdays and $12.59 on weekends. The same special is $6.99 on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m." - Alex Lodner

Day By Day Review - Rittenhouse - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"No matter the weekend or the weather, Day by Day always seems to have a line. They’re only open from 9:30am to 2:30pm, so the window for brunch is a little tighter than some other spots in the city. They also don’t take reservations, but they do have very friendly service, a rotating assortment of stuffed French toasts, and potato pancakes with smoked salmon. Stick with the more classic American brunch dishes and skip the huevos rancheros for once." - Jordan Price

Google
This place was AWESOME. We have a large family of 8, so I called ahead to make sure the patio was an option. The person on the phone was extremely pleasant and let me know he would save something for me. We got there and he set us up on the patio just as I requested. Our waitress was phenomenal! The entire staff was great, the food was great, and the patio was tranquil and perfect for a nice morning breakfast. Absolutely will return!!

Google
This cafe is so cute! They have a ton of gluten free options. The food was 4/5, just slightly underseasoned. Other than that our experience was amazing. Our server was John and he was an angel! The coffee is very good and they have soy and oat milk options. The atmosphere is 10/10, extremely cozy and they have an adorable patio.

Google
I could have spent an hour just exploring the cute and unique and kitschy decor. The staff and service were great and the food was delicious. Highly recommend.

Google
Very cozy place. Little books and cranes to go in spread out across different rooms allows a big place that feels cozy. Garden is beautiful great atmosphere and not super loud. Amazing people here super relaxed and feels so comfy. Food is delicious and filling good menu options and flexible ordering. Waitress was super accommodating and helpful. We were a table of 6 and they were able to accommodate. Lots of very friendly regulars.

Google
This place is so cute! Tried it for the first time yesterday and it was great! The smoked salmon scramble with hollandaise was delicious. My bf got a 5 or more ingredient omelette and it was so yummy! Very quick service and great atmosphere. It’s filled with cute trinkets!

This eclectic Cafe is in our rotation. The cafe has spacious yet private indoor seating, and a lovely patio/backyard area with a fountain during the warmer months. The entire cafe is decorated with art, antiques, odds and ends. The bathrooms are large and clean. Oh --and the food is very good!!!! I have never had a bad thing here. My normal go-to is the egg croissant sandwich, but I have branched out and tried other things as well. My partner usually gets a burger or a patty melt. This place is perfect to go for breakfast or lunch or if you are like us and one of you prefers breakfast and the other likes non-breakfast foods. If you are an early riser they have additional deals for people who order around 7am. Some areas of the restaurant would be tricky to put a wheelchair --but the space is so large and there is such a diverse amount of seating options that there is something for everyone, including those who use mobility aids The staff is very friendly and accommodating. One time, I came by the cafe 30 minutes before close and they still made me my egg sandwich, they just put it in a to-go box. This cafe is a local gem to be enjoyed all year round, but especially in the summer. dogs are welcome here! I have seen many a dog enjoying the patio with their owners in the summer. You must park on the street. No parking lot. But we have never run into any problems finding a spot on the side streets.

Google
I love the atmosphere, quaint decor and exceptional service at Day by Day cafe. We had an excellent experience and would definitely go back to try some of the bakery and other food items. The coffee was good. We had the avocado toast along with French toast with eggs and bacon. I really enjoyed the bread they used for the avocado toast but found the "avocado" part of the toast to be simply guacamole. I should have read the menu more thoroughly and expected this. The French toast was excellent. Overall, excellent restaurant experience.

Google
Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. Can't believe I have never been here, seeing that it is having its 50th anniversary this year. It was busy but we didn't wait long for a table. Loved the bookcases and quirky decor. My husband absolutely loved the Eggs Benedict.

Yelp
Best New England Clam Chowder I've ever had. Excellent service as well. Nice ambiance.

Yelp
Come to this place for the ambiance. The back patio is an oasis and a perfect spot for a brunch with friends or a date. The inside back room feels like sitting in a library. The space is really cozy. This is a great place for a slow meal and if you don't want to be bothered by servers. The paying situation was a bit confusing because we didn't have a consistent server and the people up front were busy in a conversation together when we went to try and settle up. The food was diner food. The hash browns were nice and crispy. Most of the dishes need a bit of salt added, but it was a very Midwestern Mom type meal. It's very unassuming from the outside. Parking is street parking.

Yelp
i love it here, such a funky place with amazing food. shoutout to my grandpa for making this place.

Yelp
Chef note to kitchen staff: clean your knife and cutting board before you cut fresh fruit. The cantaloupe tasted like onions.

Connor K.

Yelp
Very poor quality food, bland, burnt coffee, and high prices. We were looking forward to come here because we heard it was "the place" to go for breakfast. But we were only disappointed.
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Excellent place for breakfast. Probably one of the best omelets I've ever had. Many quality ingredients from which to choose. I will definitely be a repeat customer.

Chris E.

Yelp
I'm a long time fan of Day by Day Cafe. I tend to eat out at breakfast, so the breakfast food is primarily what I get. My husband and son are usually very happy with the more substantial hash & egg options, but I always get the pig's eye porridge - steel cut oatmeal and wild rice go really well, and you can choose to have hazelnuts and raisins and brown sugar with milk to go over it. The place is pretty and eclectic with lots of wood and sunlight & funky knick knacks. The service has never disappointed us.
google avatar

Carl G.

Yelp
Super solid diner. Exactly what you think you're getting. Very cool "library" room, with great windows and an airy feel. Food was quick and very good. Again, you k ow exactly what to expect from this diner. Servers were timely and efficient.

Yelp
Such a wide variety of options available in the menu for breakfast and lunch, the perfect place for picky eaters because they seriously have everything. The outdoor patio area is one of the cutest patios in the twin cities with a quirky, homey vibe (: Servers were amazing, friendly and attentive. Definitely one of my favorite brunch spots
google avatar

Mariam R.

Yelp
Really delicious underrated brunch spot! I was surprised to find the place relatively empty on a weekend morning. The restaurant is very home-y and is filled with traditional booths. The server greeted us like family! The menu is huge so it was hard to decide what to get. I ended up getting the scrambled eggs with cream cheese and added hash browns. My husband ordered buttermilk pancakes and a friend ordered french toast. Everything was so good! The coffee for the table was delicious too. It felt like I was eating a home-cooked meal. Can't wait to come back some time and try more of the menu! There really is something for everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a breakfast place and we are so happy we did! Genie did such a great job serving and was extremely friendly. For breakfast, I had an omelet with the wild rice toast and it was awesome. I had never had wild rice bread and I am happy that I was able to try it out!

Yelp
My fave restaurant in St. Paul 100%! I have been coming here since I was a kid and it doesn't change much over the years. The food is always reliable, and the vibe is always cozy. The patio is dog friendly. Good strong coffee!

Yelp
This place is nice! Homey. Brick. Vintage. Lots of wood. Happy customers. Great, friendly service. Good food. Good prices. Funky looking courtyard. I have to come back in the summer.
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
Some may call it divvy but I prefer homey. My daughter & granddaughters and I always find time to gather here for breakfast a few times a year. I've been hooked on their scrambled eggs with onions and cream cheese forever. But as of today I'm ordering it with smoked salmon. Oh no I ate it and forgot a picture...delicious!
google avatar

karen k.

Yelp
We had the nicest time today outside in the patio. Great service and my cubano sandwich was great! Highly recommend both the food and the setting. Inside seating would be great in the winter and looks warm and cozy with all the blonde wood booths. Looking forward to returning. Note grand daughter LOVES their children's menus!
google avatar

Kari L.

Yelp
Great outdoor atmosphere! I wanted lunch but was abruptly told we were 20minutes too early...so I had avocado toast, it was tasty; they left off the tomatoes and some other things so the plate was sadly bare...but I pointed it out and they brought 3 small cherry tomatoes on a plate. Lol. Ok. Staff was friendly & attentive.

Yelp
Amazing food, fantastic customer service, love the music and outdoor patio with koi pond with fish and for anybody like me with food allergies it's a great place to eat at as well. It's nice and relaxing to and they sometimes have art for sale from local artists it's quite nice
google avatar

Joelle K.

Yelp
Good lunch spot. Our server was really friendly and attentive. I had the Cubano sandwich, my husband had the patty melt and the kids had a burger and grilled cheeses. All were great.

Yelp
I ordered a breakfast for my wife at a local hospit. The food at the hospital isn't the greatest and she was thrilled to get good food delivered!

Jamie B.

Yelp
I wanted something to go and I'm glad I made the decision to stop in !! The special egg bake with the hollandaise sauce was so delicious!! They really know how to season food ! It was really nice to get my to go order in such a short time , and the staff was so friendly! I forgot to grab some jelly for my toast and I looked in my bag and they had all-ready gave me some !

Yelp
We're kind of suckers for anything described as quirky or funky, so we thought we tried this little gem for lunch. It was wonderful! I had the chicken/strawberry salad and my wife had the tuna avocado salad both were excellent. The restaurant really does have a casual quirky vibe - lots of unique items make out the decor. The prices are very reasonable - both of our salads were around $14; it was more than enough food for a lunch. We went around 1:00pm; I think this would be an outstanding place to eat a leisurely breakfast/brunch. There is a beautiful little outdoor seating area (we didn't go out side - it was 95 degrees out). The staff are also friendly and engaging. Strongly recommend!

Yelp
Stopping here was my treat after a visit to the dentist (no Novocain). I had cheesy hash browns with egg and Bobby had the buckwheat pancakes, full stack. My English muffin came nicely crisp, just as I had ordered (I think Day by Day is the only breakfast place that manages to do a crisp one) and the egg, perfect as well. A side of half bacon, half sausage offered tasty full-flavored meats we quite enjoyed. The buckwheat pancakes with blueberries were massive and delicious. Service here is extraordinary. We ate on the patio which has a delightful ambience with a goldfish pond, plantings, and sculpture. This is a quirky, fun, and delicious breakfast and lunch stop. Do try it.

Yelp
So this is a favorite place to go when in the St Paul area. The food is great, service is too. The ambiance, well...quirky. I love sitting outside there but couldn't on this trip, too many bees. The outdoor area is just fun, lots of layers to it. The inside could use a little updating, but it kind of adds to its quirky esthetic. If you love quirky art, check out the murals in the bathrooms!!!

Teri S.

Yelp
The food is Wonderful. I had steak, eggs, loads of hashbrowns, toast and a huge Mocha. loved it and ate it ALL. exceptional service, very kind people!!! must go and enjoy huge menu Small quaint cafe

Yelp
I lived this place. What a hidden gem. We saw it on W 7th and decided to pop in for lunch. Was pleasantly surprised by the hidden garden area in the back. The service was excellent and the food was generously portioned and delicious. We'll be back when we're in the area.

Bonnie B.

Yelp
We had a large group for lunch, and they opened a closed section, farthest from the kitchen, to serve us. Friendly service and great food with reasonable prices. Recommend!
google avatar

Elle B.

Yelp
For my last meal of my Twin Cities trip, my friend brought us to Day by Day for breakfast. The cafe has strong "quirky neighborhood diner" feels from decor to service to their community values. (They are dedicated to providing work for folks at risk of underemployment!) We sat in a back dining room, which was like a library and sunroom in one and overlooks their adorable (dog friendly) patio complete with koi ponds and container gardens. The food was typical diner food, nothing super special to report but certainly not bad. I had picked my own ingredients for an omelette and was a little bummed that the breakfast potatoes were actually just hash browns. My friend was much happier with the Coby Special and more than willing to take my leftovers home. All in all, we had a tasty and filling meal with friendly service in a cozy cafe - the perfect ending note for my long weekend trip. I would definitely come back here if I lived in the area!

Yelp
Comfy food. Comfortable setting home cooking at its basic deliciousness stopped in and didn't want to leave. All they need is a house cat.

Yelp
PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA! Come here for the Wood-fired Pizza!! If you don't know, they have pizza and wood fired sandwiches as well! Turkey breast, Brie and berry jelly... come on!! Chicken, mozz and pesto... do it!! We came in at 6:30, and we got the pleasure of talking to the pizza chef and getting the low down our ingredients. Wow! He made the dough earlier in the day (no frozen stuff here), he grilled the chicken in the pizza oven, and grated fresh cheese. This is the real reall! I walked out to the pizza oven, as he stoked the fire and got ready for pizza #2. Why 2 pizzas? Cuz it's that good! The rise in the crust was perfect, it wasn't floppy, and the ingredients were FRESH! Looking forward to farmer's market weekends... cuz you know that pizza is gonna be seriously delicious! Only open til 8.. so order early... and if you're down at Bad Weather Brewery... then order early! This is NOT just a breakfast corner any more!!
google avatar

Yelp
Easily one of my favorite spots to grab breakfast in Saint Paul. It is offers a cozy atmosphere and the staff does an awesome job checking in throughout your time. It is great spot to grab a bite with company or even alone. I often times come here to grade papers and work. Highly recommend the biscuits and gravy with a side of fruit.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
I was looking for a coffee shop with outdoor seating for this end of worlds pandemic, HOWEVER, I found something even better. Day by Day is the premium local cafe that I have found in Saint Paul so far. The patio in the back is ridiculously perfect. To start there is a full fountain with chairs and tables with chairs around. There is a deck area with larger tables that can seat up to 8 comfortably. The inside is smaller with a nice looking booths though. The aspect where true 5 star restaurants are made is their massive amounts of COVID precautions. They have inside socially distanced seating. They had air-fresheners equipped with chemicals that kill the virus. The menu's are QR codes. The servers stand 6 feet away when taking orders. Day by Day v COVID is justly compared to the USA v Japan in WWII. ( Too far? nah you haven't been here yet!) The patio has a nice chill vibe, no music, but plenty of background noise to make conversations comfortable. They just apparently moved their pizza oven in front of the store so that its more accessible. My server was (still is) definitely the nicest server in the entire universe not even exaggerating. Perfect Cafe for brunch or lunch or anytime in between. haha stay frosty my friends

Jeanette F.

Yelp
Stumbled across this gem on accident but I'm super glad we stopped in. We got seated fairly quickly and our waitress was very friendly and took our order in a timely matter. I ordered a #12 huevos rancheros, a side of bacon, and a cappuccino. The food was amazing and if I wasn't from out of town this would definitely be one of my go to breakfast spots.

Brendan L.

Yelp
Lovely back patio for an oversized brunch! Food is simple and delicious. Backyard patio was a quiet respite from the street noise. Would definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
Yes! Oh Yes! I am a breakfast all day every day kind of gal and this place hits the mark every time. French toast? Yes please! Pancakes? BUCKWHEAT pancakes? Drool. The eggs Benny is better than expected and arrived hot at my table. The brewed coffee is meh, but you can order a barista-made specialty coffee which has improved over time (experienced baristas). The patio out back is very pooch positive, though a little crowded for dogs of 40+ pounds. Parking is on-street only, BUT you'll need to get your steps in after truly enjoying your breakfast here!
google avatar

Luke T.

Yelp
I've been going there for years and will continue to! The service isn't the best but isn't bad; solid average. I usually only go for breakfast and have never been disappointed. It has a fun atmosphere to it; library setting in the back and a great patio! I'll need to go try some lunch there, but the breakfast is worth it!
google avatar

Adriana C.

Yelp
Costumer service was ok, food was ok. I was excited to try this place out, they have a really big menu which is great. Small little tiny disappointment was a cappuccino I ordered, but at the end it was taken off the check.
google avatar

Roxanne S.

Yelp
We have been loyal to Day by Day for many years. No matter how busy, they always keep your coffee full! We frequent for breakfast, it's a pretty standard breakfast menu. I always end up with pancakes or french toast and am always pleased. I can't believe we have never had their pizza, but it's finally on my radar!

Sean M.

Yelp
First time dining here and was pleasantly surprised. Patio out back was eclectic and spacious offering a great atmosphere for being downtown brunch. The staff was friendly and present. They allowed pets which was an additional star over the rating I've given. For me the real showstopper was the food. It was just plain good. I won't brag on everything only everything I tried which included the smoked salmon scramble, the country potatoes and a croissant. I also had the raspberry fritter which was essentially a doctored up French toast but it was exceptional. For me the food makes the experience and I will easily vouch for these dishes and quality ingredients served deliciously. I will return and I review the Saturday breakfast with great confidence.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Great service and atmosphere. Food was good and they had a great variety for everyone. The corn beef hash was not the best I've had. The omelette was huge and could have been split between two people. We would come back here if we are in town for another event.
google avatar

Heidi W.

Yelp
Make yourself at home with seat yourself, grab a menu, dine inside or on outdoor patio by the little pond. (Seasonal). Staff are down to earth, service is what thin a minute or two, and you are taken care of really well. Casual environment and laid back. We had delicious food too! Breakfast burrito with chorizo (avocado, potatoes, salsa and sour cream) and Cholula hot sauce. Yogurt and granola with fruit, delicious! We like to come regularly. It has a way to encourage you to appreciate life... day... by... day.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast at the recommendation of a friend. We ordered coffee, then changed our minds and wanted lattes. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get images on our lattes like in the yelp pics. Disappointment for something so minor aside, the hazelnut latte was AMAZING. I ordered a #8 breakfast dish and it was so yummy. Perfect portions. My friend ordered #14 with the upgrade and she said she loved the various textures. The atmosphere is super cute in here with all the books etc in the back room. Our server Sara was super sweet and patient (we took forever to order). Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Nikayla T.

Yelp
A great place to get some delicious breakfast and lunch! After a late night out, this was the perfect place to drag our tired butts to get some great food. Breakfast is served all day and they have tons of options for both lunch and breakfast. They also have some vegan options as well. All the wait staff works together making sure you get what you need fast. Not to mention they were all very nice. I went with eggs benedict, very good with a thick slab of ham. That included a fruit cup which was pretty basic but fresh so no complaints. My boyfriend had the tacos; he had a positive rating. They looked delectable. The food was fast, filling, fair priced, and the environment was welcoming. Oh! They also have outdoor seating behind the building next to a pond, pretty cute. Enjoy!
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
I found Day by Day Cafe through a Google search for breakfast burritos near my location, while staying at a hotel by the River Center. They don't work with any of the delivery services at the moment, but the hotel shuttle drove me down so I could pick up a beautiful breakfast burrito. Obviously fresh ingredients, and everything melded together perfectly to make me very happy. I will definitely return, and you should too.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Ran in early this morning for a quick breakfast. Love this place! Fun decor, friendly staff, quick service!! I had the short stack of pancakes and my son had biscuits and gravy. We both cleaned our plates!! Homemade taste and portions very satisfying and not overwhelmingly huge! Price was right too. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Ernest The Cat ..

Yelp
Solid place to get breakfast. In the summer you can sit outside on a patio. I am not a huge breakfast person but I love to get over easy eggs and bacon and I'm always satisfied.
google avatar

Chrissy D.

Yelp
Absolutely the best dining experience ever. They were able to seat 10 of us outside, including accommodating my 99 year old great grandmother. Our waiter was amazing, punctual, and very very kind. Food took 15 minutes! Left with tons of empty plates. Food was DELISH. LOVE THIS PLACE.
google avatar

Amy O.

Yelp
I love this place! They have a beautiful back patio, tons of dining space, a great menu (love the new wood fired pizza), and I love the principles of the business. Would definitely recommend for breakfast or lunch or just coffee.

Cole T.

Yelp
Stopped by the Day By day Café, very unique, cute outdoor seating area but that's about the extent of what this restaurant has going for it. The food is nothing to write home about, not bad but nothing special. The french fries, on the other hand, are seriously the worst I have ever had, soggy, undercooked and completely limp.

Kea S.

Yelp
A hidden gem. Great service, great food from scratch, nice patio, family friendly. We always feel comfortable there. The decor is what some might call "quirky" (bright colors, mismatched vintage stuff, old books in the dining room) so if you don't like quirk or tattooed servers, you probably won't like this place. But why are you in town anyway if you dislike those things? Buckwheat pancakes are great!
