Where to Find Barista Competition-Worthy Signature Coffee Drinks Around Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Tohm Ifergan recently welcomed coffee luminary Christopher “nicely” Abel Alameda as co-CEO, so the signature drinks will no doubt continue to flow. In the meantime, check out seasonal “creations” inspired by the Wes Anderson film “The French Dispatch” and Hiyao Miyazaki’s animated masterpieces. Dayglow also offers signature drinks that are regularly available in Silver Lake and West Hollywood. Hotel Chevalier stars flash brewed coffee that’s distilled to remove color and solubles, providing a blank canvas. In this case, it’s shaken with coconut cream, lime juice and ice, garnished with mint and fresh grated nutmeg. Ifergan named this drink for a 2007 Wes Anderson short film starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman as a former couple who reconnects, a feeling he describes as “familiar, but different,” just like this drink." - Joshua Lurie

Google
cute little shop with outdoor seating. the person taking orders was very cool and kind. yes - a bit over priced. you'll be paying for the carefully curated menu and the instagrammable aesthetic. although this location is nice, it's more suited for a quick stop in an addition to your west hollywood plans. the larchmont location is my rec if you want to hangout for awhile.

Google
Lovely spot for a quality specialty coffee — smooth, well-crafted, and served with care. The fact that it opens early is a big plus in this area. Cozy vibe and great way to start the day!

Google
The matcha was very mid. Although they use ceremonial grade and the color looked beautiful the taste was not it. Very watery flavor and no taste of matcha. Definitely loved the aura and the vibe but matcha wasn’t worth the hype

Google
This is a more upscale gourmet coffee shop that is coffee centric. They provide a variety of crafted coffee drinks ranging from 8-12 dollars, as well as select origin roasts for traditional pours. I ordered the Warhol hot which was delicious but I feel for the size which is tiny and the price at $10 is overpriced. It’s a small space with some limited indoor seating and 2 seats outside and tough to find parking but some 20 minute meters out front. If you are really into the origin of the bean and care a lot about the process then I would recommend this place to you. However even I drink a ton of coffee and prefer things a bit more casual and moderately priced. To sum it up if you love boutique specialty coffee it’s a great cute spot with good drinks. Just not my style of place :)

Morgan Mercer

Google
This is my new favorite coffee shop and I will never spend $10 on a coffee anywhere that’s not here again - the coffee choices taste like craft cocktails, except with coffee and espresso (and not in a “fluffy” way) it’s the balance of various coffee Beans and interesting flavor profiles, including unique kickers, like orange or Matcha or strawberry. So amazing Also, the coffee is just look gorgeous but beyond looking gorgeous they taste amazing and they’re so unique

Google
It was pricey, for an espresso with matcha coffee cost $9, and it was good, but nothing special to hype about it. You can try it out if you like. There are different options for coffee as well, but I know I got the most photographic and most popular one to try it, so I paid the price for it! The coffee shop is small, and outdoor seating blends in with the cute decoration. It's a hidden spot in Santa Monica Blvd & Huntley Dr. There is meter parking around the area.

Google
Dayglow has a minimalist vibe but takes coffee very seriously. I tried a yuzu latte that was tangy, creamy, and absolutely delicious. The baristas are knowledgeable and down to chat about beans and methods. A bit pricey, but it feels like a treat. I’d come back to try their seasonal drinks

Google
The signature coffees are delish. I love the experimental style it works so well and is so fun. It also does purist coffee for filter lovers. They stock some of the best beans from a variety of roasteries from around the world. Service is great, shout out to Griffin for chatting to me and letting me try some filter options. Didn't try the pastries

Yelp
I love this spot. Do you know how hard it is to find a coffee shop like this one that has GOOD house coffee? It's a miracle. great staff too, they're so friendly. Also it's a beautiful place.

Yelp
Wanted to like this spot but the experience was just eh. My cousin enjoyed his coffee order, even though it was a bit pricey (but what's new haha) and didn't appreciate the "rude barista". As for the establishment itself, it is pretty open, yet snuggled inside of its own corner near the main road. I do agree with some of the other reviews about the service. There was this one barista who seemed immediately annoyed when we asked if Awan (the ice cream spot next door) was open. To be fair, it wasn't really as obvious (to us) if we were in the right spot or not. I remember he gave us a snarky response to our question and made it seem like my cousin and I were wasting his time by talking to him. At the time, I just told myself to brush it off bc it was such a nice day. I also get it bc I work in the service industry too, so I agree, some days won't always be so nice to us. However, there was nothing done wrong when my cousin and I needed a question answered and we got the attitude that we got back lol. The other barista working next to him did appear more approachable and friendly though. Come here for good coffee and if you're curious for something new for your LA adventures, but don't expect both.

Yelp
I tried the Warhol coffee and it was quite flavorful. Dayglow had plenty of seating available making it easy to relax and enjoy the coffee. The service was great. The staff were friendly and helpful, taking the time to recommend a coffee based on my preferences. I'll definitely be returning. The only downside is the parking, but it's worth it for the great experience.
google avatar

Yelp
I've had their coffees a handful of times and they are delicious! This location has al seating area to the side where you can cool down and enjoy your drink.

Yelp
Nothing like a Midday Glow up on a sunny day! If you want GOOD coffee, spot by here. Yes, it's pricey ($7-$10 for a latter or $3.50 for a vegan donut) but I promise you, you won't find better quality and service. What we ordered: Iced Warhol has 2 shots of espresso with a cream top and orange peel. Think of it as a old fashion latte. It's my favorite. (small size 2 shots or large size with 4 shots) Iced Cha Cha : two shots of espresso, condensed oat, milk, cinnamon. Super refreshing and strong. Parking is a challenge but there's plenty of street/meter parking. They also have a wonderful lounge to sit inside with plenty of tables/seating.

Yelp
Dayglow | West Hollywood 1. Totoro -- black sesame, activated charcoal, distilled coffee, orange blossom, raw honey, coconut, oatmilk DayGlow in West Hollywood is a small café known for its healthy drinks. I tried their Totoro drink, which was made with activated charcoal and black sesame! I was initially iffy about the charcoal, but you could hardly taste it as it was hidden behind all the other ingredients. It was everything I could imagine in a 'healthy' coffee!

Yelp
Dayglow is probably my top choice for coffee spots in this area. The drinks are crazy delicious and each brewed to order. Every barista I have been served by has been a charm and they also are very prideful of their craft. Service is always great because their menu is well thought out and I take barista suggestions which they're usually happy to provide. Ambiance is very chill. Great place to get away from the busy loud competitor spots that are near by. Love the bold blue walls and the contrast chosen by the design team.

Yelp
After coming to Dayglow once a week for the past 3 months, I feel like it's time for a fair review. Coffee - Exceptional. If you are looking for a fantastic pour over, and if a Rare Glow is on the menu, don't hesitate. If you're not into some funky fruity flavors, then ask the barista for a more medium roast and they'll be able to point you to the perfect cup. I've tried many and have not gone wrong a single time! Creations - My partner's favorite creation is the Warhol 2.0 with its unique citrus and spice flavors. My favorite is the Totoro because I love anything with black sesame. I've also tried the Military Latte, Hotel Chevalier, Elvis, and Alyssa Lynch, and while some of these could be a little too special for my taste, I never regret trying them (because they're truly unique), and can't help but wonder how they make flavors work together! On days when I'm not feeling as bold, I just go back to the Warhol 2.0 or the Totoro. :) Beans - They sell a variety of well known roasters and will have different rotations so you'll never get board. Some of these can be very pricy, so make sure to check out the price tag or ask the barista before assuming anything! The baristas are very knowledgeable and great at what they do. However, during the times that we come, I've only seen 1 barista at a time behind the counter so the service can be a little slow at times if there's a line. If you have time, come by and check it out!!

Nima A.

Yelp
Christie is amazing but the other baristas all have major problems. They all act like they are high on shrooms and don't know where they are or what's going on. I asked one of them to add cinnamon to my coffee and he looks at me like I'm growing horns. The coffee is good but they need to find new workers.

Yelp
Whenever I am in West Hollywood, I make a special effort to stop by the dayglow here. The drink menu is extensive and their creations are quite innovative. The menu changes often too which I think is cool ! Some of the coolest coffee drinks I've ever heard of and tasted are from here. Highly recommend ! Staff are always super kind (and patient as I study the menu) too. The building is a dynamic blue and they have additional indoor seating.
google avatar

Danna K.

Yelp
So expensive. My dad was not impressed by the normal cappuccino. I liked mine but not to the degree of the price. Service is counter only. Ambiance was nice. They opened a much larger area than before.
google avatar

Hanna K.

Yelp
A lovely experience all around! Everyone I interacted with here was very friendly, from the customers who were waiting to the two kind baristas. The totoro was really yummy - probably one of the yummiest mixed coffee drinks I've ever had. The cardamom bun wasn't anything super special but it was good as most cardamom buns are. There was a limited selection of other pastries as well. The seating area was pretty empty on a Saturday morning, as most people seem to get their drinks to go. Love the indoor-outdoor vibes, especially on a nice day. Street parking available. Would totally come back to try more of their drinks!

Yelp
Visited for my first time today, 5/31, around 2pm. I ordered the Warhol 2.0. I asked the cashier if I could use the restroom and he said I could use the porta potty across the street. I asked if I could use their restroom since I'm a customer but he insisted that the restroom was locked and the porta potty was my only option. After I received my coffee I had a seat and noticed they had a bathroom with the door wide open. Not sure why this cashier was so against me using their restroom. Wish I could take that tip back. Coffee was ok but service was poor. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Went here for coffee in the morning. It is a small space and only has outdoor seating. There were 2 baristas and we were the only ones in line. I think the baristas could do a better job managing their time. They both were working on the same drinks. We were not acknowledged by either of them for 10 minutes and they were very standoffish. The drinks themselves are nice looking, but we're not what we expected. I believe they put too much in their coffees and could really simplify them. We got the totoro and we enjoyed the coconut foam on top, but it didn't taste like it had any coffee in it. It had so many flavor in the description, but we didn't take anything other than the coconut and black sesame. The military latte was very watery.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
I don't know what I just drank (the Totoro) but I know it tastes like a French New Wave kiss close up and makes my eyes happy to look at and is part of a Ghibli name inspired menu (cheap shot) so... even as a non-coffee drinker - I will be back to try the rest of these "creations". Service is kind and the vibe is cool but unpretentious. Seems like another spot that could coast by on location but it follows through with amazing drinks.
google avatar

Gloria W.

Yelp
Just really high-quality coffee! Smaller location, but super cute, and the line moved relatively fast. Barista did a great job, and the menu is super unique. I typically order a plain cortado, but I couldn't resist the fun drinks! Not really any seating, but it's good for to-go.

Yelp

Yelp
While the iced lattes were good and unique, I wouldn't come back here for them. The next time I come to Dayglow I will exclusively be looking for their specialty selections of pourover and espressos. Somehow, I didn't even notice them when I was there, but I have since seen their website and am so curious about the coffees that they offer.
google avatar

Jenny E.

Yelp
Honestly, really overpriced for a very mid matcha. They didn't even mix the matcha powder per order (they have a container with pre-mixed matcha and water that they pour into a cup of milk), so I don't see why it should cost $8.50. Hardly any seating as well. No parking in the surrounding neighborhood, and can be hard to find a meter depending when you go. If you're looking for matcha, skip this place.

Yelp
I can't believe it took me this long to try out this place for the first time, despite passing by it countless times on Santa Monica Boulevard, right next to the delightful Lazy Bird açaí bowl shop and the nail salon! The inviting aesthetic might have seemed a bit intimidating, but I'm glad that I finally gave it a shot. The interior is just as nice as the exterior. As you descend the steps, you enter a cozy nook. The menu is quite diverse, and you can even opt for a regular iced latte. Just let the staff know your preference, and it cost $7 because I opted for oat milk. They also provide alternative milk choices like oat and almond. The barista on duty today was friendly and welcoming! Although there are numerous other coffee spots in the vicinity, such as Alfred's, Zinc Cafe, Urth cafe, and Starbucks, this one definitely falls on the more upscale and bougie side. Adjacent to it, there's a vegan ice cream shop that I have yet to try! Keep in mind that the seating area is somewhat limited, but it's absolutely worth a visit! I'll definitely be back again! :)
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
I absolutely love the coffee here! The Matcha is very good too. Love the vibe here, they are so friendly and welcoming. Drinks are made to order quickly and they have a much better variety than other coffee shops. Good quality coffee, highly recommended!

Mindy R.

Yelp
The only thing strong here is the disappointment. Stopped by this place for a decent cup of coffee and a quiet spot to work. Got neither. The coffee tasted like someone whispered the word "espresso" over a cup of lukewarm tap water. I've had more flavor from instant coffee in a motel lobby at 2 a.m. The barista looked like he was high on something. He looked like I personally insulted their entire bloodline by my order. I asked for oat milk, they gave me something completely different. When I pointed it out, I got a shrug and "we're out." Wouldn't recommend unless you're into overpriced sadness in a cup!

S P.

Yelp
This location is always understaffed - they don't have enough folks to take orders and make drinks. I routinely have to wait 5 minutes just to buy a bag of coffee. The coffee bag selection is much worse than the silver lake location. Too much stock is taken up by Dayglow products, and, sadly, they are a pretty bad roaster. Add more shelf space, or dedicate more space to third party roasters who are superior. The quality of the baristas here is pretty bad - particularly the handbrews / pourovers. I would stick to beans under $8/cup, otherwise you risk paying $12 for a bad cup. Shame - I'm sure the beans are good.

Brice Y.

Yelp
When it comes to finding the best in third-wave coffee, we will go anywhere. Downtown LA, Portland, Seattle, SF, San Diego, Hamburg, Camden, NY, Costa Rica... we've been to more coffee houses than restaurants, and we rate the harder as well. Dayglow is, in my humble opinion, at the pinnacle of the movement. They have the best coffee, from the best roasters, from around the world. Looking for something light? They've got it. A blended drink, yep that's here too. What about a co-ferment with eucalyptus? Ahh, duh... and it's amazing. This place is not about ambience or seating, it's about getting the best coffee you can. The staff is great, even if there's only a single person working. But don't think you're gonna rush in and rush out, there's pour-overs and iced coffee is being made, hand, pulled espresso and more. Not only can you taste some of the best coffee on the planet, but you can also take some home with you from some of the best roasters in the game. If you like coffee, go to Dayglow.
google avatar

Billy M.

Yelp
I got the Warhol and OMG ....HEAVENLY! The bourbon vanilla Dj orange cold foam on top of the iced cold brew espresso was out of this world!!!! 10/10

Jamie N.

Yelp
Agree completely about the rude barista. I have been here a few times nonetheless due to the lack of good options around this area.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
This is a pretty small Dayglow location compared to the one in Silverlake. Because of this, I also felt like the drink menu was way smaller. And I didn't love that the tables were all sooo close to each other inside. I had the limited Alyssa Lynch matcha & it was definitely yummy & pretty creamy like all Dayglow drinks. They do have a bathroom but you need a key, I believe. I still think I prefer the Silverlake location even though the parking is arguably better at this WeHo location.
google avatar

Kaylin C.

Yelp
if you're into unique coffee combinations i would highly recommend trying this place! the cafe coquito was very yum, kinda reminiscent of vietnamese coffee but less strong and slightly coconuty. the drink are definitely on the pricier side but overall such a cool vibe
google avatar

Omar B.

Yelp
Was in the area and craving a latte so decided to stop by here since yelp had good reviews. The gentleman working the register was so kind and welcoming and walked me through the menu and offered suggestions and his faves. He mentioned the Totoro was his fave so I decided to give it a try. It was amazing! In my top two favorite Lattes now. The gentleman working there is awesome and the epitome of great service you hope for when walking into any store, restaurant, coffee shop, etc
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
I've been a few times now to try a few different drinks but I always feel that there's somewhere else I can get a better drink for cheaper. It's a struggle to spend $10 on a drink and not even enjoy it. I want to like it I just can't get into it.
google avatar

Evana G.

Yelp
Drink tastes like pure milk. Service sucked. Extremely disappointing. No customer service skills. Stood there, no one greeted me. After I order, finally my drink is just sitting there and I have to ask "is this mine"? For the ridiculous price for a small cup, I had a better expectation.
google avatar

Jamie O.

Yelp
Needed a quick grab and go coffee, and this was the perfect spot to drop by! Very dog friendly. They are currently renovating their main space, so they're using their smaller seating space to take orders and make drinks. So as of right now, there is pretty limited seating. However, the barista was so nice (didn't catch their name but they were wearing a Justin Bieber shirt) and was pretty quick despite working alone. Enjoyed my Chai Latte and there was free doggy snacks for our dog, who was very happy to receive a treat.
google avatar

Ariel C.

Yelp
TOTORO COFFEE! Cute small little coffee spot in weho. Parking is limited, but there are a few in front of the coffee spot and a few down the street. The totoro coffee. Tastes magnificent! And I'm so glad. They have great pourover selections, roasted beans sold in bags, and good tea selections. They also have sourced pastries, vegan donuts and more! Love this place!

Johnny B.

Yelp
The matcha tasted like water with a splash of matcha...The Warhol is fantastic though. definitely overpriced for what it is.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Nice latte. Very nice latte. This place is off in the cut though. I only saw it because I had parked on the side street. Absolutely invisible from Santa Monica Blvd. The two guys there were sweet and very artsy. A little pricey, but every place is a little pricey. I think it's similar to blue bottle or something. So typical pricing maybe. Hahaha. But there is really nowhere to sit and relax. Maybe it's a place that's so neighbourhood-y that people grab and go, which is what I ended up doing. Maybe there's a hidden larger amount of tables than the two or three that I saw, but def hard to find seating.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop hidden off of Santa Monica. I really liked the orange coffee I got -- I can't remember the name of it unfortunately. Service is pretty quick, every drink is handmade so it takes a bit of time but it's worth it for a perfect cup of coffee. Just took off one star because it's pretty pricey (around $7-$10 for a latte). If you're in the neighborhood, though, it's worth a stop.
google avatar

Darylynn D.

Yelp
Matcha latte - This drink is served hot or cold. I had it cold and I enjoyed it very much. It is also unsweetened, but of course it depends on your preference Cha Cha Latte - This is only served hot, but it's so good. The place is very small and more of a grab and go type of place.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Watered down espresso drinks for people who just want sugary drinks. Also no access to restrooms even for paying customers.

Hans H.

Yelp
Unique selection. Nice roasts. Nice location. Many of the premixes are very sweet with a lot of sugar, be aware if you are going for those. Also definitely go for larger sizes because small is very mini. They can't do decaf on a lot of drinks. The baristas working there are not attentive, unfriendly/mopey, they often forget or ignore orders. Sometimes there are two to three of them there just focused on chatting with each other, they don't acknowledge you or call out orders. It is unfortunate. It is clear they do not want to be there, and don't like their lives. There used to be a knowledgeable friendly passionate gentleman there who is no longer there. If this is not a deliberate choice by the owner then I feel for him or her. It is not easy to hire in LA as a small food business after covid and inflation. Big labor shortage and high operating cost so you get stuck with hipster vampires like this. If it is a deliberate choice well then... Community Goods has much friendlier staff.
google avatar

Mickey T.

Yelp
Good but comically expensive. $8 for a 10oz matcha latte is absurd. Tiny donuts are good but $3.50 a pop and are supermarket quality. Seems like a rich kids hangout more than anything. Will say it's a nice, clean store and the patio is quiet.

Joyce Y.

Yelp
Ordered the matcha with pistachio milk and strawberry syrup for $10. Not worth the money. The strawberry tasted like jam and the matcha was watery
google avatar

joanne g.

Yelp
I have never had coffee drinks as unusual or addictive as those from Dayglow. I'd originally gone there in search of beans, but -- although they sell packaged beans from a variety of roasters -- they don't roast their own. Having read the reviews, I knew I had to try the Totoro, and it was even better than I expected -- and I'm the person who usually prefers a plain espresso. My husband got the Coquito, which was also good, though I preferred mine. I'll be back!
google avatar

Katt D.

Yelp
Starting out as a small coffee shop hidden in a corner, Dayglow has expanded into beautiful cafe, serving artisanal coffee beverages and perfectly sweet vegan donuts. There is also a fantastic selection of whole bean coffee for purchase. The service is personable. My favorite drink by far is the Moonlight Kingdom, which consists of an oat milk latte with maple bourbon vanilla syrup, a toasted marshmallow, and sprinkled with smoked applewood salt, the perfect balance of salty and sweet in a cup!
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
I came here over a year ago, and have been thinking about my drinks since. I had the pleasure of stumbling in again while I was in the area about two weeks ago, and they do not disappoint! I hate seeing people critique their prices and "vibe," because to me, their vibe is immaculate. If the baristas come across "uppity" it's because they take pride in their work! And their work is great. Truly amazing. I'm a fellow barista, and it's such a treat seeing these baristas put their whole souls in the drinks that they serve, and I can taste it! I love the selections of coffee they sell on the shelves, as well. Truly top tier. I can't wait until I'm in the area and can come by again! The price is WORTH IT!!!
google avatar

Rumsha H.

Yelp
fucking rude ass employees, made me cry because they actually are so disgustingly rude. got the wrong size, didn't add vanilla, no cream top all for $10...??? literally hate this place. I work at a coffee shop too, and i've never ever treated people like that before. don't work if you're gonna be pissed asf. like literally pls don't work a job.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
It's nice to see the cast of Silicon Valley have found work since the show ended! However the coffee is awful, and the staff seem to enjoy making fun of the customers! Especially the extremely stoned Gilfoyle!
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
This place always has fantastic brews and they also sell beans that come from all over the place (like Denmark!). If you're into coffee and trying out different beans from all over the world, this is your place to go. I enjoy coming here and seeing Cait. She always makes the best almond milk matcha lattes. I can never get the ones I make at home to taste like hers. She definitely has the magic touch

Tatiana G.

Yelp
I wish I could give this 0 stars. This place I feel like people go to for the aesthetic. First off, this place is WAY overpriced for a coffee. I ordered "the Elvis" & it was $12. I watched one of the baristas make it and saw he used his BARE hand put powder in my drink and immediately got grossed out. I was looking forward to my drink too because I saw it on the counter from someone else's order, but it didn't look like the barista gave much time into mine. It just looked messy, and tasted terrible. I would have asked for my money back tbh but didn't want to waste my energy. Do not come here, stick to Alfred's or Peet's / or Philz. They're much better in quality and price.
google avatar

Yelp
Getting my glow on with the most aesthetic matcha latte ever! Those layers!! Matcha (drink name: "defund the military") consists of matcha latte with vanilla, espresso and topped off with sprinkled cocoa powder. Each component of the drink was distinct, but came together perfectly! A great drink to beat the LA heat with! I'd definitely get my coffee to glow here.
