Dayong Street No Name Congee

"Tainanese don’t need a sign to find good food in every nook and cranny of their city. This shop is one of such joints – a nondescript space clad in corrugated metal sheets, but that doesn’t stop regulars from queuing at the door. Its Tainan-style congee is more like soupy rice than the creamy type. Milkfish fillet, oysters, Chinese celery and rice are drenched in a clear stock to make the brunch favourite of many." - Michelin Inspector

We ate here twice because it’s THAT good! We even skipped our hotel breakfast so that we could eat it a second time. Tried the fish skin porridge, which still came with a fair bit of meat, and also the fish belly and oyster porridge. Both were really really yummy. The fish was completely deboned and not at all fishy. Oysters were also very fresh. It might look simple but I think this qualifies as one of the best meals I had in Tainan.

Foreigner ordering guide: Grab a table and a menu + marker on the side table at the entrance. Look at the number on your table and write it down on the top right. Check what you want to order and then drop the paper off on the table next to the woman dishing out porridge. She’ll drop off your food and then pay after you eat. Had the “comprehensive fish maw” bowl (Google translate) and it was great. Huge amount of fish and oysters with a light broth. This place was popping off when I went there, but well worth fumbling through the crowd to get a great breakfast.

Milkfish porridge is best served in this small breakfast restaurant. It continues to serve until porridge out of stock. A lot of morning transient traffic plus irregular business hours which are based on lunar calendar to be minded if you decide to give a try. Otherwise, a very tasty, typical Tainan breakfast eating style you don’t want to miss. I had ordered Milkfish Porridge and Braised Pork Belly over Rice. Recommended combination. Milkfish Porridge has milkfish meat, oyster, diced celery, fried garlic, and rice.

The fish porridge was amazing! We ordered the fish stomach porridge and the fish was deboned! Furthermore, the braised meat rice was incredible as well.

The eating habits of southern people are different from northern people in Taiwan. In Tainan, people like to have porridge, rice dumpling, rice or noodles for breakfast. Since I am in Tainan, I have to try what southern people eat for breakfast. The little shop doesn't have a name but popular. The porridges it sells are with milkfish or oyster. It looked good and very flesh, I knew it won't disappoint me. *I saw people put fritters in it. It looked tasty. I would like to try next time if return to Tainan.

Porridge with oysters and fish slices, the soup tastes fresh and sweet. The fish skin with a little meat is tender, I would recommend it.
