10 Best Jazz Clubs in New Orleans

"One of the most respected clubs in the Marigny, this nearly-two-decades-old offshoot of a New York bar has the feeling of an ancient institution—in part because the building itself dates back to the 1880s, but also thanks to the many acts that have graced its stage. The vibe and the cover charge vary from night to night, but one thing's for certain: d.b.a.'s hard-earned rep means the music's as consistent as its lengthy craft beer list." - Andrew Parks, Paul Oswell

Google
if you come early enough you don’t have to pay a cover charge! the music is superb. BRING EAR PLUGS as it’s very loud. live brass section is wonderful. also bring cash so you can tip the band!! drinks run about $15 per. entire place is great.

Raquel Baldassaro

Google
The place to listen to REAL Jazz in New Orleans! I am a local and been going for years. They have seats in the open windows so you can relax and sit while still hear the music. Very relaxing for someone with back issues.

Carrie Jeske

Google
Great artwork. Local vice. Cool front window seats. Drunk menu and alcohol selection just okay.

Brittany Ambrose

Google
We didn't catch her name, but the gal who helped us had a K on her necklace. She was amazing! She even walked us to the Spotted Cat for our next stop. Please tell her a HUGE thank you from the two girls with the vodka soda 🩷

Erin B

Google
We were looking for a place where we could just sit and relax and listen to some great Jazz music and d.b.a. did not disappoint!!! The band was amazing!!! The main singer had pipes on her that gave me goosebumps! The atmosphere was cool, dark, with soft lighting that made the ambiance on point for a great jazz bar. The bartender was also amazing and made sure we were taken care of with fabulously poured drinks and also made some recommendations for us to do the next day of which we did and she was dead on! We will definitely be back!

Sebastian Mochkovsky

Google
Amazing band playing that night. Just for drinks and you may be standing up all the time. Limited seating on the stage zone.

Alex Gnas

Google
The worst thing about this locals hidden gem is the surge in cover price, $20 dollars just to walk in means you get a show, but not really bc they're just local musicians which are everywhere in humanity. This art is monetized and anyone who does visit this place on a whimsical note is probably stumbling in already drunk. Used to be good, just go when nothing is going on in the city maybe on Tuesday or Wednesday. Great drinks on an off night.

Erika Benitez

Google
Good drinks, good live music. Jazz and all the cool New Orleans grooves! Ok Frenchmen st which is a nicer, but more relaxed vibe compared to bourbon st. Street parking was easy to find.

Yelp
I was told if you wanted to hear good jazz music, you needed to stop by Frenchman Street. We were not disappointed when we came here. There was no cover charge, a live jazz band playing, people dancing, two full bars, and a good atmosphere. There were many bars on the street to choose from. Many required a drink purchase every hour, had a cover charge, were small, crammed. and had standing room only. We decided on coming here because there was no cover, and a live jazz band could be heard tearing it up inside. We walked in, and found the bar divided into two rooms. One side had full bar, tables, and chairs, and was a little quieter. You could still hear the jazz band but were able to carry on a conversation. The other room had a full bar, tables, and chairs, an open floor area for dancing, and a stage with the band. There was plenty of room to enjoy the music on both sides and bar tenders to assist you. The service was exceptional, the prices were reasonable, and the pours were generous. Overall, great experience and a fun time.

Yelp
Strolling along Frenchman Street after lunch, I heard the blare of a brass band and followed it to dba. I was pleasantly surprised that the Treme Brass Band, a well known Mardi Gras parade band, plays at 3pm on Sundays. With a $10 cover charge, the bar has two rooms and easy to get drinks at either bar. It's a wood paneled room with a stage in the back, with comfy seats in front and along the wall. They had a good selection of beers on tap and finger food in the afternoon. I would go every Sunday if I lived in NOLA!

Yelp
One of the best venues in New Orleans history! It's my war room . Oh and they have great ac!
google avatar

Liza A.

Yelp
Great spot on Frenchmen Street to check out live music. It's an intimate space with stage in back. A large bar is in the center area with most seating ringing the bar or along the walls.. If you're here for a show come on earlier side, if you want to grab a seat on stage side. The sound is great throughout the bar. Really not a bad seat in bar for the sound. Just your view is obstructed by a wall, if you're not in the seating room in stage area.

Yelp
Did not try food and do not think there is any. Good jazz but too loud by far and gave me a headache. Drinks very expensive and there is a cover charge.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the most spectacular time at this bar in New Orleans! The jazz band playing was phenomenal, they had me grooving and dancing all over the place. They really had us having a good time. Their vibes were fantastic, the music was so good, and the band members were funny and, their vibes really did transmit over into the crowd. Loved my experience at this bar!
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Amazing stage and music. Band was upbeat and engaging. Sadly the only white wine offered tonight was a prosecco or Pinot Grigio..

Keith O.

Yelp
Great music acts, but that's a given since it's on Frenchmen. They are under new management so time will tell how things turn out. What was once the best curated beer list this side of the Avenue Pub has become absolutely standard. It's probably what more people want, but I went there for the friendly staff and the great beer and both of those have changed a lot recently. But I'm Willing to give it another shot!

Bethany H.

Yelp
What a fun, relaxing, spot to enjoy music on Frenchman st! The drinks were delicious, the music was phenomenal, and we enjoyed that we could hear the music and hold a conversation with each other. The bartenders were friendly and answered any questions we had. Definitely stop by!
google avatar

Yelp
Walked into this club, the band was good fun. The drinks were good but way overpriced $23 . The service was the most inhospitable. We came here because it was highly recommended online. We like the neighborhood and make sure to come this side when in town. I would not recommend to anyone, just bad vibes..... Move along to somewhere friendlier!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for live music in Frenchman Street. The Soul Rebels were on the calendar during my visit and was a great night. Great music, great service, great music club. Grab a drink with your friends or paramour in the seats with a fishbowl look out onto Frenchman, there might be a cover for evening music, but it's well worth it. In 2022, the craft beer selection was extensive! Urban South and other locals come to mind. I didn't find out until later about the semi-private unisex bathroom on the mainfloor, which was nice and clean, and always seemed to have a line. The Soul Rebels did a great job bringing NOLA Brass Band party to d.b.a. and did some nice cover versions as well.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite music venues. The ambiance is cute, classy, and even romantic. They have an amazing selection of whiskeys and beers and great local music. If you don't want to dance and have your eardrums blasted out right in front of the stage, there's seating in the back and in the other room where it's a little quieter. And, of course, Frenchmen is a fun area full of bars, restaurants, the art market, street performers, murals, and people-watching.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Had a great time seeing live music here. Drinks were fairly priced and bartender was nice to us. The entry was confusing as 1 door charged a $10 cover and the other door didn't while they both lead to the same bar... but overall fun place with live music.
google avatar

Timothy T.

Yelp
Great music, great staff, great selection. My wife and I found this to be our favourite stop while exploring Frenchman on our recent trip. We'll certainly be back on the next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Fabulous live music and dance floor. Cozy and intimate. In this case that's a good thing!

Yelp
We used to love this bar, no more. $5for a Diet Coke? Almost $10 for a rum and coke. I always brought friends and family when they visited. We really enjoyed sitting in the window booths people watching. You could hear the music, but still have a conversation with your booth mates. Unfortunately, the walls have been removed and now your just part of the rest of the bar. It was my favorite bar on Frenchmen, no more. And I won't recommend it to visitors now.

Yelp
Came to see Tuba Skinny and we were not disappointed by the band one bit, and just a little disappointed to learn that seating was so scarce but yeah it turns out I just didn't research enough before making plans. No fault of establishment. That being said, if you're easily fatigued from standing or wearing uncomfortable shoes, get yourself to the front of the queue before they open up the room where the bands perform so you can snag a seat! Okay, now with seating out of the way, drinks were good and the bartender who took care of us all night was delightful! Didn't catch her name but she had black hair and bangs that made me think "do I need to get bangs?" that's how cute they were. We were there from 5:40 until 9:00 and the crowd turned a little fratty around 8:30 but before that it was a lot of folks really interested in the music and an awesome crowd of swing dancers! That was fun to watch (and fun to try! Shout out to the kind gentleman named Seth who took me for a spin!). Will absolutely come back in the future...and will absolutely be wearing my Allbirds again with some orthotic inserts when I do.

Yelp
Stopped by here in August and paid a cover charge for $10 to walk into an almost empty space here. The jazz band performance was good but there were around 5-6 people in this huge club. We ordered a drink. The drinks were okay. I wonder why they charged us cover for an almost empty club. I recommend visiting other better jazz clubs instead of paying cover charges and sitting here.

Yelp
The Palace Punch was soooo good! Strong and tasty! It's something about the spiced fruit element throughout NOLA that just made it more delicious. Maybe the fact it was made with passion fruit as well

T R.

Yelp
Refused entry tonight because of my service dog! I was on the clock as a licensed new orleans tour guide, bringing in a small private cocktail tour group of 3, when I was denied entry by the doorman because of my trained, licensed & credentialed service dog. I asked for a manager and he forced me and my tour group to leave! Later i walked by on the sidewalk and that same doorman threatened me and my service dog, and it was terrifying i was genuinely scared for my life, mind you this man was 3x my size

Ricky G.

Yelp
worst bar in NO, do not go. Terrible staff, extremely rude and inappropriate. Do not waste your time or money on this place when there is so many better places to support. Avoid if possible unless you like being treated poorly.

Yelp
Wandered in off the street to catch Treme at d.b.a. on a Tuesday night. Ok, that's not entirely true. A friend who grew up here said that even though we are old fogies who are typically in bed by 10 we had to see this band. So we went to Cafe Du Monde and got coffee and drove over to experience this place. So absolutely glad we did! I'd never been over to this end of NOLA before. Much more artsy and hipster kind of place but also a much more enjoyable energy vibe from the bars and the bands on the other side of Esplanade. Treme started promptly at 10pm and very quickly the fairly empty bar filled up with friendly people from the street. The band is well known as one of the local marching brass bands, so seeing them sit and play is apparently different. They did not disappoint! Excellent way to end a fantastic day in NOLA.

Yelp
It's called getting "A Wild Hair", otherwise known as no I'm going to chill and stay in tonight when SUDDENLY and without warning, you're dressing for downtown and driving to the edge of the Quarter to rock out with your favorite local band. I haven't been here in yeeeeeeeaaaaars. Sure the crowd was a lot of tourists, it was loud, a little crowded-but if that's not for you, stay far away from Frenchman Street. The cover was a decent $10 and the drinks didn't take long to be served. The club is cozy, with tall ceilings and plenty of space to dance. The sound is great, and it truly is an intimate club for local acts that you'll be telling your friends about "That one time in New Orleans...."

Yelp
We went to D.B.A to see the Swingin' Gypsies on a Fri night. We were aware there was no cover, instead a requirement to buy one drink per person-per set. The band started at 6:30-we got there around 6:15, thinking it was set to start at 6:00-and decided to wait. While waiting, we took time to review the expansive liquor and beer menu. We attempted to order right when the band started, and were greeted by a very moody bartender. She rudely scolded us for 'sitting around too long without ordering'. I asked if I could get a water before I grabbed a drink-and basically the message was order a drink and just hold it with my water. It felt pushy and rude. We had a spot we're settled in for the band, we were planning on drinks, but apparently you need to drink at the bartender's speed. The moment the band finished the first set, we were ushered to buy another round. I'd have rather paid a 10$ cover up front then be harassed sip by sip. I enjoyed the band though; the stage is well placed with lots of dancing room, they put in a great show. We will just go see them somewhere else.

Yelp
Seven years (and dozens of visits) since I've last reviewed DBA? How is that even possible? And because I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip these days, it seems an update is due. My favorite time to hit up DBA is within the first hour or so of opening. The place is all sparkling and empty and smelling of that new bar smell. My guy and I belly up and over to our choice of coveted window seats. This is the ONLY place to sit, trust me on that, daylight or nighttime, you're going to get an epic show of people parading down Frenchman Street in various states of sobriety and questionable attire. While we're on the subject, whatever happened to travelers looking sharp, y'know, wearing those special vacation clothes? NOT. ON FRENCHMAN. EVER. I mean, maybe there's an awful lot of people vacationing out of their cars these days, but there's some seriously interesting looks going by those windows. I digress. I will leave it at this: One of my favorite things to do in New Orleans is to sip a glass of sparkling and gaze outside at the local flavor here at DBA. That said, this will always be a favorite music venue. It's a MUST for anyone visiting New Orleans and the cover is worth it. The selection of wine, beer and spirits is impressive (especially beer and brown liquors, but any bar (that's not a wine bar) that carries both Prosecco *and* Cava has my undying loyalty. DBA will always be on my regular rotation when I'm back in New Orleans.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink to kill time before our tour and ten minutes in this place I was regretting that we had a tour to attend. I did not want to leave. The band was amazing and the bartender was quick and friendly. There were couples dancing to the jazz music which was awesome. Tuba Skinny i believe was the bands name, such great music. Great draft beer selection and clean restrooms! Would visit again!
google avatar

Maurice P.

Yelp
Always amazing musicians playing. A beer list you couldn't imagine if you tried. Affordable drinks, friendly wait staff and incredible vibes. For true lovers of New Orleans culture, it's a mainstay on Frenchman St. Not a place for beads and obnoxious behavior, but more of a bar for people who appreciate great live music and letting the good times roll.
google avatar

Yelp
We initially attempted to hit the Spotted Cat, but it was jam-packed, so we ambled across the street to d.b.a. It was a fine choice. When we arrived, there was a $10 cover to see Little Freddie King. We didn't know what we were getting into, so we took it on faith. The bar is oddly split into halves, so one half can see the stage and one half can't. There are TVs on both halves so you can see a live feed of the stage, but it's not a super-clear image with all the stage lights. Better to see the band in person. Bartenders were friendly and fast, keeping the drinks zipping along in rhythm to the band. Little Freddie King was great, straight-ahead 12-bar blues. I think we expected some traditional New Orleans jazz, but blues is a very acceptable cousin. We enjoyed the show. If the other 50% of the bar had an unobstructed view to the stage, this would be a 5-star experience. I guess you'll just have to jam yourself into the mob of people in the other half and abandon all concept of personal space. It's worth it for quality live music. You can see who's playing when and how much cover is here: http://dbaneworleans.com/shows/
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
Great place for live music. Great place for good drinks. Then again, is it possible to be mislead from a good time on Frenchmen St? Go here. I promise you'll like it. If not, just walk out of the door and go to literally any bar on the same street.
google avatar

Doreen L.

Yelp
DBA New Orleans is a great small venue to have a drink and listen to music. The night we were there, there was a bluegrass band and they were very soothing. The crowd was very relaxed, mostly older patrons that night. No cover and 1 drink minimum that night. We all enjoyed a couple hard ciders, a stout, and couple of beers. The bluegrass band was soothing. Some of the patrons swayed to the music, one girl danced in the back. If you get tired, or have elderly people with you, there is a bench in the back with a flat screen tv. You can watch the band on the flat screen tv. The bar takes up most of the space in DBA and they have a great selection. K enjoyed his beer. The restroom was spacious and clean.

Laney S.

Yelp
Another great place to listen to music and get drinks on Frenchmen street! Big place with mostly standing room. No hot food available, just drinks. They offered a pretty wide selection of drinks. We paid a $20 cover for two people but we were luckily able to leave and come back in. Definitely would recommend!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Stopped in to see Little Freddie King and have some drinks. He is the real deal, Good acoustics, cold drinks, friendly not wasted patrons (Frenchmens St vs Bourbon). Good vibe Very highly recommended Slainte

Kevin A.

Yelp
My go-to place on every visit to New Orleans. It's bare-bones, so be prepared to stand, but the music is always good and often great. "Name" performers sometimes, and then it's super-crowded, which is fun too. Love the variety, usually (it seems to me) getting louder bands as the night goes on.
google avatar

Cassondra K.

Yelp
D.B.A. Always has great bands and I really enjoy the space. Drinks are reasonably priced considering its Frenchman Street, bathrooms are clean and the staff is always great. They charge a cover on most nights.

N M.

Yelp
Saw John Boutte tonight. Wonderful show for $20, which also covered the next act that we could not stay for. This guy 100% the real deal! Would pay a lot more to see him in the same venue! Small, intimate and conversational. Only about 70 people inside and one of them was Hall of Fame Member Todd Rungren who had sent John a song that he sang tonight! I will be back here for sure next time I'm in NOLA!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite venues in New Orleans. The venue is very chill and relaxed, with an area to watch the band and a separate area to sit at a bar to hang and sit at a bar. The cover was only $5 for the whole night and the music was amazing both nights. We were lucky to run into great music with Walter Wolfman Washington plating on Friday night and Soul Brass Band the following night. They have a huge selection of drinks and beers and have a cozy atmosphere. This will definitely be my main stop on Frenchman Steet next time we are in New Orleans.
google avatar

Meg T.

Yelp
During our night on the town on Frenchman we dropped into D.B.A. With a $5 cover, we expected some wonderful NOLA music, and mostly got what we were looking for. The music was wonderful, and the crowd was lively. The singer however, was awful. Each time the bandmate would do a solo, or they would go on without the singer we'd enjoy ourselves, then the singer would get back on and we'd consider leaving. We finally took off after about 20 minutes when it looked like the singer wasn't going anywhere. All in all D.B.A had easy to get to restrooms, free water, and okay seating. We probably wouldn't make it a priority to return as there are other venues on the street, but it was a nice add in to our NOLA trip.

Yelp
Even though 4 stars doesn't exactly reflect my experience I feel like it's the most accurate and honest rating for this establishment. I loved the layout where there was a brighter side of the bar with no live music and then a darker side of the bar sectioned off for the live jazz music. It was very cool. It was a full 5-piece jazz band and there was bench seating along the wall and a small dance floor up front and there were a few couples who were killing it out there. That was so fun to see! We were there at 7 PM so I also enjoyed that it wasn't packed and we had a good view of the band and could clearly hear the music. My particular experience was not 100% enjoyable though. Part of my experience isn't at all a fault of the establishment. I had a bad headache and the music was loud so that made it a little less enjoyable. BUT the part that is on them was the pricing and taste of the cocktails. I understand most people here probably order beer and they had lots of beer on top and in cans. But I don't usually drink beer so I got a rum punch cocktail. First of all it was $14 which is like NYC pricing almost. Second, they mixed a light and a dark rum in this punch cocktail and it just didn't taste very good. A punch like that should only be light rum. Overall it's definitely a great place to go if you're trying to give someone an up-close, intimate genuine New Orleans jazz experience.
google avatar

JM F.

Yelp
$20 cover and not much to offer in beers. I'm not a hard alcohol person. Young and older folks enjoyed the outside venue and a good performance by the Big Chief
google avatar

Ann G.

Yelp
Forget the other streets, Frenchmen is the place to go in NOLA. d.b.a. gave us a great night of drinks, music, and fun. The drinks were flowing, music was great, and the atmosphere was relaxed. No muss, no fuss, just good times. Les bons temps rouler!

Lauren D.

Yelp
This club is doing things right! We were able to enjoy a few outdoor jazz and blues concerts in a comfortable and safe manner. This place is clearly the place to visit on Frenchmen Street-none of the cover band type of crap, Just really great music. It's outside in the Palace Market next to Spotted Cat. There is a cover charge, but we've seen 3 shows in 2 days. Every one of them was worth it. After wandering down Frenchmen, we were disappointed to find several touristy types and/or clubs with no regard to covid safety. Sure, restrictions have relaxed, but it's still smart to be safe. You can bring in food, so we've had a wonderful outdoor picnic at a comfortable table with great music. Wonderful experience!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Came in and got some strong drinks, listened to some amazing live music, watched drunk people dance and over all had a good time. Cheap, good music, strong drinks! What's not to like?!
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Normally a great place. However, with their $5 door charge, rude bartenders, and $1 per swipe credit card fee. D.B.A. Can suck a big fat D!B!A! Pro Tip: when he bartender informs you of the $1 per swipe credit card fee. Simply take it off his tip.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
Nice air conditioned venue with the smell of hardwood and a chill ambiance. The bar selection of Germain and Belgian is amazing. The featured live bands are great, but I come here because it's nice and cool, not funky like other Frenchmen venues and the restrooms are clean. My spot!
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Woooooooooooooo!!! My neighbor John M was spot-on....so is MSG. Back in the day, when Warehouse district was his home, this was his chill/jazz/drinking hole. Just back from watching the regular Mon night late show of Glen David Andrews. Awesome! Especially loved him tackling the reality of living local life, even singing and belting out the Serenity Prayer.:) $5 cover. Full range of drinks at the dual bar, great ventilation, high wooden ceilings outfitted with even cooler ceiling fans, and comfy booths for canoodling to the beat. So fun. Cabs line up on Frenchmen St, so one just has to step outside to catch one. Funny thing: as we were stepping into the lift at the Roosevelt, I spotted some debonair dude who was also rocking to the beat at said bar. I said, "Hey! I just saw you on Frenchmen in Marigny!" That's how to spend a cool night. Michter's single1 rye whiskey, neat.
google avatar

Andre W.

Yelp
I had a hell of a time here as I got to see Glen David Andrews on Monday night! He is an awesome musician and is the regular performer on Monday nights. He did the damn thang while jumping on and off the stage and inviting relatives on stage to perform as well. We definitely got to dance our asses off here while the jazz was pumping. The place itself is mildly dark and has lots of open space for dancing and drinking. They had a decent beer selection which is always a plus. dba is located on the very popular Frenchmen street which seems like the place to be on a Monday night....just a 10 minute or less walk from the Quarter. One of the best Monday nights I've ever had!
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy live local music. The bar selection is deep but they don't have many cocktail specials like I like. Some of the bartenders are not the friendliest so know that going in. If your going for a show make sure you get there early if you want a seat, there is very limited seating. I was there to see John "Treme" Boutte in his first show following hernia surgery. He was very good with the slow stuff but because of the injury he couldn't perform anything up tempo. He tried to do "Treme" at the end but you could tell it was hurting him to do so. I will be back in a few months and hope he gets back to 100%.

Yelp
Very chill off the strip Atmosphere. Still fun and very reasonable drinks. Lots to choose from. And really hot guys come here (this guy). A good getaway if you don't want the Spring Break crowd.

Yelp
Fantastic beer selection, world-class local talent, and fun crowds make d.b.a. a must-stop on Frenchmen Street. On my first visit a few years back, I got to see John Boutte, who was very cool in person. More recently, we received a warm welcome that started right at the door (where else is it FUN to pay a cover?). Most nights, you'll hear really good music of varying genres. For $5 or free, it's always a steal. And, even if the music is not your bag, you'll always find an amazing brew on tap, or in a bottle.
