The 23 Best Restaurants in Amsterdam, the Netherlands | Eater

"Surinamese cuisine reflects the history of the country. South American ingredients blend with culinary elements transported by African slaves and Indonesian, Indian, and Chinese laborers brought over by the Dutch colonizers. At De Hapjeshoek, you can get a little bit of everything: Indian-inflected lamb roti rolls, Indonesian sambal made with Caribbean peppers, and moksi meti: a Chinese Surinamese dish of meat, in this case roasted chicken, served with rice or noodles. Know before you go: The subterranean restaurant is located in the Waterlooplein metro station." - Katharine Khamhaengwong

The 38 Essential Amsterdam Restaurants

"The Singh brothers have been serving amazing Surinamese food at De Hapjeshoek (the Snack Corner) inside metro station Waterlooplein for over 27 years. While you can enjoy flavorful dishes like pom, roti, and bara at the cafe, it’s nice to grab takeaway and head for a bench outside looking out towards the Amstel river. Try the moksi meti, a steal at just 7.50 euros for a full meal of fried rice, noodles, or white rice topped with roasted chicken in kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), long beans, and other veggies." - Monique van Loon

Went around 20:00, wasn’t busy but picked up straight after. I asked the Uncle serving if he could help me with some recommendations for chicken/vegetarian. He was very nice and explained how it worked. Portion was MASSIVE, delicious, and very affordable, I can see why this is a recommended spot online! Would come again! Highly recommend, staff was lovely and friendly :)

Really great food at such a great price in central Amsterdam. The staff were also really nice and the service was very fast. Would definitely recommend as the portions are so generous

The taste of the food was really good and the portions were fulfilling (even too much for one person, so I recommend coming with a companion).

Located in Waterlooplein metro. Easy to find and popular following the feature on the Netflix Somebody Feed Phil show. Superbly delicious 😋 Speedy service. Good portion. I would highly recommend 👌

As someone from a Trinidadian family, I have to say that the curry chicken roti roll was quite good. So good in fact, that I had to go twice. It could do without the pickles, but it was easy enough to ask for them removed. Portion size was decent as well, a little more filling would have been appreciated, but it's enough food to leave you satisfied. The service was friendly and we understood each other well enough despite my subpar Dutch and their limited English. The restaurant itself isn't too special, but the food is good and I definitely recommend it as a take out option for anyone staying in the area.

A little hidden gem inside the Metro Station. The portion is huge and the food is great, a nice surprise to see in Amsterdam where eneryhting is overpriced. If you're not sure what to order just ask the staff, they'll help you to narrow it down.

This was a pretty busy place. We ordered for take away and very evidently the only tourists at the time. It seemed like everyone who ordered after me was served before me. It felt like it took a really long time (20 min) after ordering the food for it to have it prepared for us to take away. With that said, we didn't order anything complicated, and the food was delicious!

We came to order some pick out. We got the lamb sandwich, fried rice with 3 meats. We asked them to give us 3 of their most popular meats. One of them was really spicy. Some of the meats were a little dry. But strangely addictive. If you are craving Asian food, this is a cheap option. The lamb sandwich was nice and hot. Everything was a little on the saltier side but overall not bad. The sauce goes really well with the rice. The portions are not bad also.

Yelp
This was our favorite lunch in all of Amsterdam!!! We had a little trouble finding it, as we didn't know it was in the subway station but once we did WOW. 10/10 everyone should make it a point to eat here. Amazing.
