An All-Day Cocktail Lounge Emerges on Platte Street - Eater Denver

"Inside this all-day cocktail and food lounge, the new building’s walls are covered in old city architectural renderings, Platte Street graffiti pieces, a dead technological device installation, one quote from the poet Nikita Gill, and portraits of Coco Chanel and Charles Bukowski. Ruskaup calls the Dead Battery Club, as well as her other spaces, 'a tech and lit mashup.'" - Josie Sexton

Went here on opening day for a drink to try and get this summer started and the vibe was perfect. An all glass wall made this all day cocktail lounge spot feel bright and airy. The decor had rich velvety textures with fun colors and clean soft wood lines. My buddy and I got several cocktails and they were all well made with clean flavors and hit the spot on this pseudo summer day. The cocktail menu looked very creative and I’ll definitely head back to try some of the coffee drinks another day. My friend’s Pal V gin drink smelled and tasted amazing and my Charo bourbon drink was perfect with the lemon and ginger notes on a sunny afternoon. I followed it up with the We (don’t) Work which was a nice mix of tartness from the lemon and smoke from the Scotch. We also tried the trio of stuffed buns (jamon & manchego, spinach/artichoke/chèvre, and smoked brisket) for $12 and the special King Crab filled bun. The jamon bun was cooked perfectly with the flavors coming thru vibrantly, the spinach one could have used a little more intensity from the chèvre, and the smoked brisket was very delicious. The king crab was definitely the standout. A little pricey at $12, but king crab isn’t cheap and it tasted like I was eating a lobster roll from Maine. All in all a great meal and a fun addition to this part of town. I’ll definitely be back.

Walked in to grab a bite and beer, but they were packed. I didn't realize the 40 or so people up front were one party, just leaving so we were walking out when the waitress ran out after us and politely offered to seat us right away. It was nice she didn't let us leave with a misconception of it being too busy to accommodate us. They were super friendly, and hospitable. We ordered the fruit plate, but it was unavailable so we tried the cheese board. Wow, what a massive board. For your typical $15 for a cheese board, you get an absurd amount of awesome cheeses and crackers. We couldn't even finish it. Small dining area, but wonderful staff and excellent portions. We will return!

We dropped in one afternoon for drinks and to try the buns (we kept hearing so much about!) and were not disappointed. I had the mixed drink with hibiscus and it was amazing. We tried one of each of the buns and loved them all. Definitely a spot to check out in Denver, either as a Denverite or just passing through the city.

The food was good. The location is in a bad spot for any GPS. If it wasn't for the sandwich sign out front, we would not have found it. Even though we repeated our order 3 times, the blond who took our drink order, could not get it right. We ordered four happy hour drinks, and we were getting six to eight drinks. We would love to give this place another try if these issues can get fixed.

Google
In search of a late lunch and air conditioning I landed here. Between a great drink and the sliders this was simply heavenly. The amount of food was perfect and the service was attentive. I was only in town for one night, but I hope to return again just for another taste of those sliders. 😁

Great cozy little cocktail spot right on Platte street. The entrance is around the side of the WeWork building right by Denver Beer Company. They have seemingly lowered their cocktail/beer/wine prices since my first visit, and I thought everything was very reasonable priced now! The two takes on an Old Fashioned are both great, and they have what I would call a borderline speakeasy vibe and mixologist talent! The space is very small, but comfortable; think NYC feel. There is also a relatively small food/dinner menu, which I have not had yet, but smells great! Since the space is so small, the food aroma can be very overpowering, but not offensive. They also make a great espresso at the bar with a very fancy espresso/barista machine! Check them out - definitely worth dropping in!

Google
Excellent! The interior is hip but comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Most importantly, the food was so good. We had a plate of their signature buns, all of which were excellent and great for sharing and snacking over a cocktail. The tuna layer "dip" was also really tasty, tangy, and rich. Cocktails are also well made amd fairly priced. The negroni was great, and the manhattan with well liquor was OK (my fault for not specifying the spirit). For drink, food, or both, Dead Battery is great.

Google
Loved the music Random was playing this Sunday during lunch. Really suits the vibe and decor! Enjoyed my king crab carbon bun and my friend's tuna salad was delicious - and she's a hard lady to please! Will definitely be coming back to enjoy cocktails/happy hour and maybe bring my old nano to stick on the wall ;)

Yelp
Broken cage is one GREAT bar in Denver. The plants are unique and cover the bar like a greenhouse. The food is so tasty, and there are many choices. The drinks are tastefully designed, both for cocktails and mocktails. I've never felt here feeling unsatisfied! Such a unique curiosity sparking experience, highly recommend to start or end a night out!

Yelp
Update: the server barely talked to us the entire time. We talked to the server as we asked for the check and were subsequently trying to leave about how upset we were and he laughed. Again will never come back here. We have never left an establishment with full drinks but we were so disgusted with our service we had to leave. All it takes for a good review is ok service and an apology which we received neither (just a laugh). Great atmosphere but came here for my birthday and got sat immediately for our reservation. We then sat for 10min before being talked to at all and then an additional 35-40 min for our drinks after that. Terribly slow service. We wanted to love it but they just are not equipped for the 15 total guests. People at the bar who came in after us were served before us (without a reservation). Incredibly rude staff as well.. At this point will never come back here....especially on a special event.

Yelp
Went there this weekend with some friends with a reservation and every table was full. We waited over 25 minutes for our table and then another 15 to order drinks. I ordered a Kombucha as I don't drink alcohol and I was given an IPA which was on our receipt. I was oblivious and thought that the kombucha was meant to taste like beer as an alcoholic alternative. Also was very hot in there it was unpleasant.

Yelp
This was a perfect cocktail bar for catching up with a friend. Our bartender Sera made delicious cosmos that had the perfect amount of tart and sweet. It's also a plant shop with many beautiful plants for sale. If I wasn't traveling, I would likely have left with a Maranta leuconeura, (or so Google image search says!!)

Yelp
~OUT OF TOWNERS~ Sierra was a great host, server!! Right from when we walked in the ambiance was cool and inviting. Having a hostess with the mostess made it top tier customer service experience. Her vibe and energy was amazing. I had the espresso Martini, Divine aviation, dragon heart, Moscow mule. All drinks from the mixologist were amazing! endless others i forgot to name lol i will be back for sure. Thank you Sierra!!!

Yelp
My friend was in the mood for a Happy Hour and I saw this place on TikTok so I thought it would be nice to try. I am so glad we did. A person in my party called in for a reservation and good thing we did, because if not we would not have been able to get a table for happy hour. Our server Drew, there are no amount of kind adjectives in the dictionary or that I could come up with to describe how amazing her service was and how kind she was. She was single-handedly running the show herself and even though it seemed like she should've been swamped with spurts of people coming in all at once she handled it flawlessly. Any request we had she did it with a smile. It really is servers like her that make a difference in the service industry and show there are genuinely kind and great people in this world. We ordered a handful of drinks and finger foods. Some that I can remember were espresso martinis, the fries, the pretzel rolls, churros, a watermelon margarita, ice wine martini, etc. From what I could tell my friends enjoyed their drinks. The pretzel rolls were okay I wish the cheese was bigger and bolder and it spoke to me more, but I think this place was not 100% food focused. But I must say those garlic fries and that sauce were so fire so idk. I do love my espresso martinis with baileys because I think I search for that milk like taste. While the martini was delicious on its own I did ask for milk on the side and it really did tie the drink together. Don't judge until you try it lol. The lighting, fresh plants, and decor were spot on for the bar. We want to personally thank Drew for such an amazing night! Our girls night would not have been the same, thank you!

Yelp
The espresso martini is sooooo good! Great atmosphere and the bartenders were very kind. Highly recommend stopping in for happy hour!

Yelp
I came into The Broken Cage on a very snowy late afternoon hoping to have a nice cocktail with some friends . I absolutely love the atmosphere in here. The bar feels very organic and is covered in beautiful plants that hang from the ceilings and decorate the seating areas. The service was amazing, we were met with very friendly conversation and jokes. We had two amazing espresso martinis that were topped with a whip that I will tell my future grandkids about. (It was that good) we also had one green tea shot that was honestly one of the best I've ever had. This is a cute spot especially if you're feeling "wintered-out". Seeing all the greenery and having a nice cocktail or mocktail will bring you right back to summer vibes!
google avatar

Zahra S.

Yelp
Amazing expresso martini and service. The pretzel was good too! I would highly recommend them for a happy hour
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely incredible drinks! I wasn't in the mood for alcohol, but that didn't matter--this place has fantastic non-alcoholic options! The zero-proof mezcal Negroni was chef's kiss--smooth, complex, and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was just as impressive--lush greenery everywhere made the space feel so inviting and cozy. It's the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a well-crafted drink. 10/10, can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Came in on a sat night, it wasn't busy looked like only one other group was there, it was very bright inside and quiet which I found really odd. We noticed our server was visibly drunk. There was what I assumed were the owners in the corner next to us talking loudly in Spanish (I kept hearing puta coming out of one of the guys mouths) and one lady standing at the bar staring at patrons which made us feel like we were intruding on their space. We felt uncomfortable the whole time. We ordered a round of drinks that were mediocre. We closed out and left as soon as we could. I did like the plant ambiance but that was it.

Yelp
This bar has great cocktails and service. I liked The vibes and decor. Siera was awesome! She was attentive and her recommendations were spot on. Definitely will return when I'm in Denver.

Krista G.

Yelp
Made a reservation for 9:30pm and was told there wasn't room because they just didn't know they were going to be busy and couldn't handle it. Won't be returning, why do you have an option for reservations if you don't follow them? Quoted directly from the male server, " we are too busy to look at the reservation list, sorry." Yikes.
google avatar

Noah K.

Yelp
Went here for some after-work drinks to kickstart the weekend. Got a reservation and I'm glad we did, the spot definitely got busier and busier as we enjoyed our drinks. For food we went with the flatbread and pretzel sticks. The flatbread was good and filling, but wasn't too special. The pretzels were amazing though. Buttery and soft with two dipping sauces. The drinks are fun and delicious. Very unique options with something for everyone. Great presentation with all of them. The last drink I ordered was served in a lantern with smoke! The service was professional, efficient, and friendly. The bar itself is charming. Relaxing atmosphere but it did get loud.

Yelp
Stopped by here for a drink and app before dinner and it was exceptional. Can't wait to come back and try more.

Yelp
Love this place!! The ambiance is 10/10!! There are so many plants and the greenery is amazing. Great vibes all around. I came here with a friend to grab a quick drink and a small appetizer. They have great happy hour 4-6 M-F with great deals. We both got an ice wine martini and it was delicious. We also got a tomato jam jar for a little appetizer and it was decent, but could've had a little more flavor for my liking, still good and refreshing though. I ended up getting an espresso martini before we left (for me it's a must) and it was one of the better ones that i have found in Denver so far the staff was friendly and helpful and they also had great music playing! Also fun: you can buy some of their plants there!! As a plant person, this is a go to!! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I am kind of obsessed with this place and don't come here enough. If you are serious about well made cocktails, this is your place. It is very small and cozy. I suggest schooching your way up to the bar and enjoying a seat there. You will be able to watch the amazing staff make all of the fun cocktails and talk to them about the concept and story behind each. They are kind and friendly and always happy to recommend something that will please your palate. They also have plants all throughout that are beautiful and alive, something I am unable to say about most of my plants at home. BUT they inspire me to have more of a green thumb AND they sell these green creatures, so you can purchase them and take them home. If you need happy hour, a night cap or just want to shoot the shit with a friend for a bit over some yummy sips, this is it!
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
One of the most aesthetically pleasing cocktail bars ever!! Plants galore with fairy lights (?)! We actually came here on a whim to wait for a friend, but it was definitely a wonderful choice. Our server was so friendly and sweet too! Their drinks were super unique! My friends drink was an alcoholic dalgona coffee. The perfect drink for any coffee lover!! Meanwhile, I don't remember what mine was called, but it had popping boba in it!! It was like drinking a juice. Dangerously delicious I really enjoyed it. Definitely want to try other drinks and try their food! We will need to make a reservation next time.
google avatar

Abbey L.

Yelp
Went for happy hour and it was a great deal! $8 for many of their specialty cocktails! Fun ambiance with all the plants being available for purchase! Tasty drinks, will def be back to try others! Small cute place and would recommend a reso if coming later on a weekend night!
google avatar

Remi W.

Yelp
This place was great. We had an 8 person work event here / happy hour. The staff was super helpful with setting things up in advance. When we got there everything was laid out and we had a table tucked away to the one side which was perfect. The place itself was decorated amazingly. It is a great atmosphere and we were all able to talk and hear each other perfectly which is a problem I often run into at some cocktail bars. Our server was super friendly and helpful. Our apps were brought out quickly and everything tasted great! We had the pretzels, hummus, fries, and flatbread. The hummus was my favorite. They have a good variety of cocktails. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails and can personally vouch for the watermelon margarita! Would come back!
google avatar

Joy Q.

Yelp
Great spot for cocktail and snacks Has a happy hour too. Great vibe after work for conversations and hanging out. I'm impressed by how this spot keeps their plants well. All the green leaves were so pleasant to the eyes
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
This is such a cool spot for drinks! They have tons of greenery and plants that are for sale too!! We ordered the seasonal cocktail which was a dirty chai pumpkin espresso martini with toasted marshmallows on top. Sooo good :)
google avatar

Aundya A.

Yelp
Last night I checked out @thebrokencagedenver , a super cute bar filled with my favorites, POTHOS!!! I loved their cocktail menu and overall ambiance. Divine Aviation (Spring 44 Gin, Luxardo, Lemon, lavender, butterfly pea flower tea) Dirty Dalgano (8 year aged rum / espresso / milk / coffee liqueur / espresso whip / cocoa nibs)

Lauren B.

Yelp
Great happy hour! Delicious drinks & food. Loved the atmosphere & all the plants everywhere
google avatar

Alexa N.

Yelp
Cutest little cocktail bar on platte street! We came for happy hour and everything was SOOO good. The happy hour is from 4-6:30 Monday-Thursday. Most of their cocktails were $8 and they have $8 snacks. I would say one of the better happy hours in Denver. We got pretzel sticks, French fries, and their tomato jam with naan. They were all so delicious and they were all good portions of food. My favorite were the fries. The bar area was filled with cute plants. The inside seating was super cute and there was a lot of cute wall decor. I will be coming back!
google avatar

Stefanie C.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come to Broken Cage since it opened, and I finally made it out here late-ish one night for a date. It's so cute!!! Anywhere that's colorful and has a bunch of plants is 100% my jam. I walked in and sat at the bar while waiting for my date. I started with a strawberry margarita, which was delicious and part of their happy hour special that day. We eventually moved to the bench, where I ordered another cocktail and their mushroom bisque. They were closing earlier than advertised, which we were bummed about, but I knew I had to get some sort of food in my stomach. Broken Cage did a great job with their smoky lantern cocktail that went viral on social media. Would love to come back and try that.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
This place is SO FUN!! I love the amount of foliage. Seriously so many plants- I don't know how they water them all! It really creates a cool environment. The drinks are super creative too. They each have a fun flavor profile and theme to them! There's a smoky one that comes in a lantern, and lots more cool themes to be found! Give a few of them a try!!
google avatar

Anna W.

Yelp
What a great place to stumble upon! Went to happy hour here. We got all 3 happy hour apps and wow. So good! The tomato jam jar was not what I was expecting in the best way. 10/10 recommend. The fries were great but get a side of the honey mustard that comes with the pretzel because they make it in house and it's delicious. The cocktails were also great and great happy hour prices for them. Also our server was so lovely and she took great care of us. This place is filled with plants and so cute! Great for girls night or a cute date night spot.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
My experience at The Broken Cage was, overall, pretty good. The staff was friendly but it took a while to get a table even though the place was nearly empty. My waitress also forgot to put in an appetizer order but eventually comp'd it because it came out as we were needing to leave. She was very apologetic which I appreciated. The drinks were unique and delicious! They have some good happy hour deals so get there early to take advantage. The ambience is great with so many plants everywhere !!
google avatar

Claire M.

Yelp
Tucked behind Denver Beer Co, Broken Cage is a gem of a cocktail bar! Beautiful plants (that are all available for purchase!), modern paintings, classy vibes, and good music greet you upon entering. My husband and I stopped in on a Saturday night around 7:00 and it was packed - nearly every seat was taken, and we would have thought literally every seat if one of the bartenders hadn't come up to the front to greet us & lead us to the last 2 chairs at the bar! We were greeted by other bartenders & everyone was just super friendly. For drinks, I got the dalgano Coffee & my husband got the Berry Picker. Both drinks were super flavorful & beautifully presented. They didn't seem to be super strong in alcohol but the flavors were top-notch. We'll definitely be back - especially to check out their happy hour!
google avatar

Zita C.

Yelp
Not the best cocktails in town but it's a pretty good place. They have a cool, smokey cocktail that wins the presentation award for sure.
google avatar

Ciara S.

Yelp
I love the ambiance, decor and abundance of plants here. The drinks are always changing and they always use ingredients I don't see anywhere else. Even when I'm unsure if I'll like something the staff here are great and will let me sample and then it's always exactly how they explained it. It's so hard to find a bar in Denver that is classy and also gives a hipster vibe
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
My partner and I are traveling through Denver and decided to stop at the Broken Cage (had a pretty stellar looking HH menu). It did not disappoint! The bartenders and staff were very friendly, drinks were pretty good, and the pretzel rolls were the best I've ever had (the sauces they came with were divine). Would be a staple for me if I lived in the area for sure!
google avatar

Abbey K.

Yelp
First time trying this place which I found on Yelp. We went for happy hour where we tired their take on espresso martini. This espresso drink has rum in it which was different but tasted so good! We also got the pretzels which were hot and delicious however I did wish they had regular mustard instead of the beer cheese sauce and honey mustard it came with. My boyfriend got the lobster Mac and cheese. This portion was HUGE!! and it came with large chunks of lobster in it. The ambiance in here was so welcoming. I absolutely loved the green ivy growing throughout restaurant. The waitresses were both so inviting and friendly. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Amisha S.

Yelp
One of my new favorite drink spots in Downtown Denver while walking Platte. It is tucked away and has the coolest esthetic! Loved the vibe and the setting. We sat at the bar and Mason was our bartender. He knows his stuff! He was so wonderful, gave us awesome recommendations and was a joy to talk to! First he made us a round of shots inspired by their watermelon marg.... Soooo delish! I got the Boba Fett which was divine! A lychee and gin concoction that was one of the best drinks I've ever had! My bestie got the Black Smoke which comes in a smoking lantern! It was also delicious! We also had the Berry Picker which was good (I don't love egg white foam so I wouldn't order it). I would love to come back for HH (sadly by beloved Boba Fett isn't on it) but there are some garlic fries calling my name!
google avatar

Caroline Y.

Yelp
I stopped in here for a cocktail with my partner! The ambience is super cute and very green! They have ivy growing above the bar and tons of potted plants. I love the vibe. Many plants were for sale. I'm giving this place a 4 out of 5 only because they had two big TVs, which killed the ambiance for me. I understand having TVs in bars to watch sports, but this is not a sports bar. I found it very distracting. We came on a Sunday afternoon and the TVs were showing the local news. I don't like places that show news when you're trying to relax and forget about the world. I may have had a different opinion if the TVs were playing music videos or something more soothing that matched the ambience. The cocktails were great though and I loved the many options for seating! Next time I might try some thing from their food menu. I'd definitely be back!
google avatar

Aubrie H.

Yelp
Very cute and unique cocktails, only tried their fries but they were amazing. Small inside and fills up fast but is so cute and the bartenders are great! The host seemed a little bit grumpy but maybe just caught them on an off night. Would definitely come back again!
google avatar

Bea B.

Yelp
I have been wanting to check this place out for months but rarely get to the area. So I was super excited when a friend invited me out to dinner at a nearby restaurant because I knew immediately that we were going to be heading straight to the Broken Cage for post dinner drinks! And man, I'm so happy we did!! I was totally blown away! Everything here is so well thought out and executed, from the beautiful interior and plant life the engulfs you when you walk through the door, to the stunning craft cocktails and warm friendly service... this was definitely one of my top five experiences in Denver in 2021! I can't wait to go back and try their food menu next! Maybe I'll even buy a plant!! (Pro tip: all the plants in the restaurant are for sale) A huge thanks to owner Layla and our bartender Ty for the hospitality and incredible cocktails!! I'll definitely be back soon!!

Honest M.

Yelp
Friendly staff - nice vibe - interesting clientele - only problem they make lousy drinks - bartender used a jigger - but to make it worse gave a skimpy pour
google avatar

Jacob B.

Yelp
Very relaxed and upscale cocktail bar with a plants theme. Their cocktails are very unique and tasty! There are a wide range to choose from and all the ones we tried were top tier. Service was friendly and efficient.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Simply stated: best espresso martini I've ever had. Great service, looooved the moody plant-filled vibe!
google avatar

Nino R.

Yelp
They have Col Taylor and Blanton's. If you know then you know. If not, give it a whirl...just don't add ice. Let the nectar of the gods coat that throat. You can always add a cube with your second glass. Bartenders are chill. Wait times will be long on busier nights. Small patio and 8 tables inside. It's a layover, or if you're a fancy, a buyout spot. I've only been during buyouts. Oh you fancy huh...

Marissa R.

Yelp
Great food, delicious drinks (and mocktails), friendly service and a cool vibe for a friends night out or date night.
google avatar

Arvind P.

Yelp
Great place to have drinks and good food in a laid back environment! Really liked the ambiance and especially all the indoor plants which are for sale btw. Music was a bit loud but I won't let that affect my review. Ordered the flatbread, salad, garlic & herb fries & a few cocktails including the black smoke - which was an interesting experience. Food tasted decent. Wish they had more vegan options but no complaints whatsoever. Overall a good place to visit if you are in this part of town. I must add - Service was really good too. Very accommodating in terms of seating us and being attentive of taking our order, listening to my food restrictions, going the extra mile to check back with me regarding my order and making sure we got the check when we were ready without hurrying us. Definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
The ambiance in this bar is great but it can get loud when busy. There are plants all around and many of them are for sale if you're looking to take a plant home. The drinks are well constructed and tasty - the rich b!tch and divine aviation are good choices if you like gin. I would pass on the small bites and appetizers here. I've tried the pretzel bites and two flatbreads over a couple visits and have been disappointed. The happy hour menu is good compared to other cocktail bars in the area.
google avatar

Patricia G.

Yelp
We came for a birthday dinner and it was about 10-12 of us. The servers were extremely friendly and helpful; they suggested different things on the menu and gave us detailed explanations. Everything I tried was delicious, down to the sauces and spices. I only got pictures of the things I ordered. I definitely recommend checking this spot out. The drinks were unique in flavor and they use herbs to spice them up. My favorite was the watermelon basil margarita. The presentation for some of the arrival of the drinks was also cool, order the Black Smoke and you'll see ;) haha great spot for dinner with friends or coworkers, a date night, first date, or just to get drinks and bites!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
The Broken Cage is a plant lover's dream. The interior is really cool and nicely decorated, with plants growing all throughout. A previous reviewer pointed out a bit of a disconnect by having a few TVs hanging above the bar, and I 100% echo this -- the TVs seemed out of place and turned what otherwise seems like an upscale cocktail bar into more of a sports bar environment. Drink service was great on a Friday night and the host was able to get us a table despite not having a reservation. The cocktail menu spans a wide variety of tastes, from sweet to smoky. I ordered the Cloud 9, a gin-based drink, and also tried the Moxa. The presentation on the cocktails was beautiful and I enjoyed both drinks. I did not try any of the food, but plenty of people at tables around us did, and everything looked (and smelled) amazing!

Carina E.

Yelp
went here for drinks before dinner and all i can say is WOW. the best espresso martini i probably have ever had and the matcha pichu was so original and had an amazing taste. the restaurant itself is beautiful and the servers were super nice. would definitely recommend and come back.

Yelp
This place was great! The drinks were delicious and hospitality was great. Kendra made this old fashioned with banana liquor that wasn't on the menu but it was amazing! Please put it on the menu :)
