Upscale eating has come to the Kaka'ako Farmers Market!
As were browsing about the Farmers Market and moving towards one of our favorite food stands, Kamuela Tomatoes, we stumbled across the Dean & DeLuca pop-up in the area formerly occupied by the Ōmao Man. We were surprised to see this pop-up as we knew that both Waikīkī locations of D&D were temporarily closed due to the pandemic.
After quickly looking over their menu, we got in line to place our breakfast orders. I planned on trying the Ulu (Hawaiian breadfruit) Burrata Caprese but during our wait in line, a worker came out to mark off items from the menu as they were sold out. Shucks, I quickly had to change my mind and ordered the ahi tuna melt which was the same as my husband's request. All of the food items were priced at $5.18 each and the menu featured D&D's famous fresh-squeezed lemonade or Signature iced tea which was sold by a cup or in a 20 oz mason jar pitcher.
There were several customers ahead of us however, one of the customers appeared to be having a payment issue. Luckily another worker stepped up to take our order and even while my husband was paying for our order, another worker called out to me and handed me our sandwiches. WOW! Such quick service and friendly, too.
We took our sandwiches and beverages (from Ōmao Man) to eat elsewhere because the Farmers Market no longer has outdoor dining areas and quickly unwrapped our ahi tuna melt sandwiches. The seared ahi tuna was about 1/2" thick and layered between taro focaccia with smoked Gouda and liliko'i cabbage. I expected that this sandwich would be served hot or grilled because it was named "ahi tuna melt" but instead, it was chilled. But, given how quickly I was handed our sandwiches while my husband was still paying for them, I then figured on getting either room temperature or a chilled sandwich. We enjoyed both of our sandwiches as they were flavorful and fresh. The negative knock against that sandwich was the cold focaccia... like any bread product that's served cold, its texture was dry and somewhat hard.
It was a good value at $5.18 per sandwich, and we'd be happy to return to try their other menu offerings.
