Dean Court Hotel | Best places to stay in York | Bucket List Travels

"Location, location, location – the only way you could be closer to York Minster would be to camp out on the altar. As it is, this trio of elegantly-converted 19th century townhouses are just a few yards away, and slap bang in the centre of town. If you want to wake up with a direct view of northern Europe’s finest cathedral, go for a deluxe category room as most point that way, (as does the Langley Suite). There is a restaurant, but with so many cafes and restaurants outside the door, it’s unlike you’ll use it for anything other than breakfast.   It’s a great choice for history lovers – Guy Fawkes was born a few doors down and the Roman streets of  High Petergate and Stonegate are just outside the door. It was a nice stay. Room was a good size. Bathroom slightly small but adequate. It is an old building almost next door to York Minster and center of York. Full English breakfast was hearty, cooked well and served hot. We enjoyed. Not sure we would return considering the price. Staff often missed opportunities to interact with guests making our stay feel a little impersonable.

Although I didn't stay at the hotel, I wanted to extend my gratitude to the General Manager Steve and his staff, who bent over backwards to assist my son who became sick during our trip to the city. I can only commend Steve and his staff for their kindness. If you ever find yourself in York and you want great customer service, which is warm, attentive and thoughtful then this is the place to stay.||Thanks again Steve and team.

Stayed here over the weekend and cannot praise the staff enough. They made me feel at ease right away and were kind enough to look after my suitcase before I could check in and also after I checked out. Also where explaining where my room was, this was done discreetly as it should be. The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. I'd had booked to go out for an evening meal elsewhere, but the Dean Court does offer a restaurant. The breakfast is freshly cooked and I opted for Eggs Royale, but would pretty much recommend anything as it all smelt nice. ||I would definitely recommend staying here, situated in a prime location across the road from York Minster. I know when I visit York again, either with family, friends, or a solo trip, whichever it may be, I will look to stay here again.

Though the hotel is well situated we were promised and paid for a room with a view of York Minster but it was totally not visible. The shower was excellent but the sink smelt of sewage when used. Would expect bottles of water to be provided especially in summertime. The part self serve breakfast was disappointing but the table service menu breakfast was excellent.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here with our friends, the Driscolls. The staff were very accommodating. A special shout out to Frank who dealt with all our bags when we arrived, in the rain, before our rooms were ready. The bar area was relaxing whether for an afternoon cuppa or a late night drink. We had breakfast both mornings of our stay and it was served fresh, hot and the prices were extremely reasonable for the hotels city centre location. Our room was comfortable (loved the feature wallpaper) and had a huge window and great view over York Minster. Thank you for making our stay memorable.

This hotel is ideally situated in York as it is only a stones throw from the Minster and all the places in town that you will want to see. It has a valet for parking if you drive and the staff are very hospitable and helpful. Our room was clean, comfortable and did not have any noise issues. The breakfast was also enjoyable each morning with a wide variety of foods and beverages. We would definitely stay again as there was nothing we could find that we didnt like.

Google
Definitely one of the best hotels in York, the location is right opposite York Minster on a quiet road, with all the shops and nice walks close by. I highly recommend the valet parking, just turn up anytime, even before check-in, they will park your car. Hotel staff very friendly, rooms are great, good breakfast.

Great Location and easy to walk everywhere. We didn’t expect that are room it will be a disabled room on the grand floor with the disabled toilet and every time when we have shower we need to be careful that the water doesn’t leak on the carpet from the shower room. It will be very nice if they will advise us and let us know that is what they can offer.

Yelp
Location, location, location! You honestly can't beat the location of the Dean Court Hotel which is situated across from the York Minister. Prime location for walking the city walls, the Shambles, and more. Our room was tiny but there was room to prop suitcases on the desk and luggage rack. The bathroom was nice and modern and a good size in comparison to the room. Breakfast was included and I enjoyed coffee, yogurt and fruit. Some of the items on the breakfast line weren't available such as the breakfast lemon cake. Our only problem was that there was no hot water for showering in the morning!! Apparently there was a power outage in the middle of the night and hot water was not restored yet. When we checked out in the morning they were very nonchalant about it and didn't even really apologize for the inconvenience. They just stated the fact that it was out. It was definitely disappointing to not be able to start our day with a hot shower.

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay at the Dean Court Hotel in York! Talk about perfect location, friendly staff, and clean accommodations! This hotel is literally at the base of the Minster - so COOL, especially at night! And right in the heart of Old Town York, minutes away from everything that you would want to do (Shambles market, loads of restaurants, shopping, City Wall walk, beautiful park on the river, etc.) It is also walking distance from the train station which is great. The rooms themselves were pretty good size for a European room and the bathroom was HUGE + had a bathtub! Yes, please! Mama got to soak her sore feet! The rooms were a bit outdated but so clean and the bed was very comfortable. They also had a pack 'n' play crib for our 9 month old baby. The only downside is that they don't have an elevator big enough to bring a stroller up and down and honestly, barely even fits luggage but the hotel team is there wanting to help whenever they can! We had so much stuff (traveling with a baby is no joke) so I felt guilty but they were more than happy to help each time. All in all, we'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends/family! :)

Yelp
Great location next to the York Munster. Rooms are comfortable and the hotel has had an uplift since some of the reviews from years back. Breakfast is solid and the staff have been excellent. The WiFi experience is among the most frustrating I've dealt with. Every time my phone goes to sleep, I get disconnected from the WiFi and it's 45 seconds to 2 minutes to get reconnected. Their captive portal is portal.wifimarketing.co.uk -- the point is clearly to make you see their stupid web page. It's annoying enough that if I come back to York, I'm at least investigating other hotels.

Yelp
Location, location, location. That is the mantra that you have to keep in mind for the Dean Court Hotel. Located in the heart of Old York, immediately across from the Cathedral (LOVED the sound of the bells) and an easy walk to the old streets, Shambles Market (inspiration for Diagon Ally) and the walls of the medieval city, it is a great place to stay in order to explore the area! That having been said, the hotel suffers from being in an historic building, which limits the amount of renovation possible. The layout is odd and winding. The rooms are tiny and there is no air conditioning, which as we visited during a hot July was a decided issue. The staff did their best to make us comfortable. They were very knowledgeable with dining suggestions and directions. The hotel breakfast was very nice and the wifi was steady and fast. So, being fully aware of pluses and minuses, I would happily return to the Dean Court to further explore York...just maybe not in July or August.

Yelp
Stayed here one night on a flying visit to York shopping with my mum. The website pictures and exterior of the hotel were promising and I was expecting good things. I was to be disappointed, however, by the tired, drab interior! The location is second-to-none. I don't think it could be bettered. It's right next to the Minster and ideally located for the shops, sightseeing, restaurants, etc and only a 10 - 15 minute easy walk from the train station. The room I had leaves a lot to be desired. The decor is very Alan Partridge Travel Tavern - the standard chipboard faux mahogany furniture and patterned carpets type. The bathroom though was great, very modern, deep bath, powerful shower and heated towel rail (though I wish this hadn't been left on full-blast!). Towels big, fluffy, plentiful and nice toiletries. The bed was reasonably comfortable, pillows looked nice and plump but were actually pretty thin. My room had a delightful view of...the back of another building. This was probably a blessing in disguise, as my Mum's room across the hall (3rd floor) faced onto the Minster side and it was very noisy. The bedroom was stiflingly hot - and this only in early June. There was a desk fan provided which barely took the edge off. With the window open, the fan on full all night, it was still unbearable, so a decent night's sleep was not to be had. I read in the welcome pack that you can hire air con units but at £25 a night, I think few would bother. For the price of the room and decor, I'd expect that to be included in the price. On wifi - the hotel advertises free wifi in the rooms. I couldn't connect to this and only when I was leaving the room to checkout did I spot at last that the username and password are on a plaque on the back of the door. Very odd place to put it! Breakfast was good - plenty to chose from and attentive staff. The cooked option was quickly brought out to our specification but all items on it were very small, so you may want to ask for 2 of things! Pastries, toast, cereal, fruit juices all in abundance. One bonus of the hotel is that they are happy to hang on to your bags for you if you're checking out but staying in the city for a bit longer. We left our bags all day and collected before heading to the station - this was at no extra charge. All in all, the location is excellent, but the hotel itself somewhat disappointing.

Yelp
We booked a 2 night B&B stay at the hotel over a weekend. The hotel was excellent and in a great position for exploring the city sights and shops. The room was what they call Standard but was well furnished and of a good size. Staff were excellent as was the food. The hotel is situated across from the Minster and you can here the bells chiming in the morning. The breakfast at the hotel was fantastic and they even left a card on your table informing you of the weather forecast for the day which was a nice little touch.

Yelp
Wonderful experience! The staff are very friendly and extremely accommodating. The interior is shockingly modern given the location in central York (which is a huge selling point - York Minster is right next door), and our room was nice and spacious. The church bells were not a disturbance and were actually really pleasant.

Yelp
Dean Court Hotel facing York Minster is a great place to stay offering comfort, style and the highest standards of accommodation and hospitality as one of York's premier hotels. So dear readers, I do recommend this hotel and their dining room, the Conservatory, for superb cuisine. Overlooking York Minister, you can sit in sartorial splendour enjoying the varied dishes prepared by a knowledgeable chef. As the chef starter, a cappuccino cup filled with a fragrant broth of roasted garlic and lentils, followed by Goat cheese baked in a crisp tartlet decorated with frisee and drizzled with balsamic. The rump of Lamb was pinkly perfect alongside a bouquet of fresh vegetables and layered potatoes. One of my favourite desserts, apple crumble, was served with a pot of hot custard and raspberry coulis while after dinner sweets -luscious dark chocolates, lemon and raspberry Turkish delite and yoghurt covered nuts with freshly brewed coffee made a fitting end to a delicious repast. This is definitely one of the most important historic cities in Great Britain Famous for its towering Minster and ancient walls which surround the city, York was the home to the Romans - in 71 AD the first Roman outpost was created and beneath the stage of York Theatre Royal lies a well dating back to that era. One of the most important parts of the Roman defenses was the Multangular Tower built between 209 and 211 which can be visited on your tour of the walls. Monk Bar Gatehouse is the most elaborate and ornate of the surviving gates and contains a dedication to King Richard 111who is revered in this city. The Vikings came to York in the 10th century intending to make it the trading of their kingdom. Do visit Jorvik Viking Center, board the state-of-the-art flying capsules and travel back in time to experience the sounds, smells and images of the city of Jorvik in AD 975. York's winding streets with overhanging beams date back to medieval times and the Shambles is one of the best-preserved shopping streets in Europe lined with quirky boutiques, cafes and bookstores. Georgian York ushered in a period of new elegance still to be seen in many shop fronts in Stonegate. Ghosts, of course, abound in York and every night of the week there are guided walks around the city in search of the supernatural and the unexplained. The Black Swan in Peasholme Green is just one of many York pubs said to be haunted York Race Track is one of the oldest in Britain and is where the infamous highwayman, Dick Turpin, was hung on the gallows - so much for his popularized hanging on Tyburn Hill in London! Of course, walking around York Minster is a must. For nearly 1,000 years people have worshipped in this towering edifice developed from a great Roman fortress to the glorious Gothic cathedral of today - the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe.
