New Austin Cafe Dear Austin Opens on South Lamar by Purrfecto Cat Cafe | Eater Austin

"Opened in May in the Zilker neighborhood at 2310 South Lamar Boulevard, this family-friendly cafe—run by co-owners Joey and Lupita Adams—positions itself as a literal love letter to the city and a community hub that celebrates local businesses. Guests are encouraged to write letters to the city and leave them on a designated wall; programming includes weekly open-mic nights, vendor markets, sober dating nights and other community events. The menu features a wide range of drinks (coffee, matcha, frosés, boba teas, beer and wine) and food sourced from local vendors, including pastries from Mr. Natural and tacos from Vegan Nom. The space offers indoor and outdoor seating, a spacious outdoor courtyard with a sandbox for kids, takeout ordering online or in person, and hours from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 8 a.m.–9 p.m. Friday–Sunday. The cafe’s team previously sourced coffee from the longtime shop that formerly occupied the same address." - Darcie Duttweiler

Cute little coffee shop with outdoor seating! It was my first time visiting and I thought the shop was adorable! Seating is limited inside, but there is outdoor seating. Menu posted can also be difficult to read but there are menus by the register that are easier one the eyes. I tried their chocolate donut and it was okay, tasted like the hostess store bought ones. Would love to try something different next time though. There were two employees and they were quick! Friendly and fast customer service. Really loved their chai latte and americano!

Google
Such a gem. Great coffee. Great atmosphere. Such a relaxing backyard under natural shade, benches with individual power outlets. Come visit before it's gone

Google
Stoked to get a coffee and a tasty donut treat that is egg free. It’s always tough finding a nice egg free treat for my son who is allergic to eggs. Coffee was pretty good too, nice and hot! Oh and they had a Vietnamese coffee with boba for my wife. What a great mix of treats.

Google
This is a nice little coffee / tea shop that’s great for working. Theres indoor seating and a large backyard where they also host events. I’ve had their coffee, boba and last time this amazing match that the barista customized for me! Stop in and support local!🙌

Google
Coffee shop is apparently non-existent. Really excited for some morning Joe and just a bunch of empty commercial space next to the tattoo parlor and hair salon.

Google
Visited today after a recommendation from a friend and so glad we did! The Iced Latte was fantastic, the Boba Tea was just as ordered- thank you again- we asked for it not as sweet and they nailed it! They have sandwiches, pastries and tacos- some from Mr. Natural which was a nice surprise. We did not get food this time, we popped in for coffee/tea. There is an outdoor patio that is wonderfully spaced out and under the trees. Excellent service!

Google
First time here. They just forgot to make my order. “We saw a cup here but no one knew what was it “ . Don’t you see the guy sitting alone with nothing on the table just waiting ? And this is why o am never tipping again in advance. Also, take a look at the image. A latte? 3 fingers of foam? This is more of a capuchino. Don’t know how to make coffee or treat clients.

Google
We LOVE Dear Austin. It has great coffee, snacks for our 18month old and it has a great play area for her and she can just run around. It’s also open at 8am so we don’t have to wait hours to get out and play. It’s our regular spot and we love that it is female owned. Also

Yelp
Dear Austin--Was a let down. I ordered a simple chai latte and there was absolutely no flavor, it was basically water. Service wasn't friendly at all and the barista seemed cold. No greeting or anything. The location is easy to miss. It's on south Lamar but thankfully they have free parking next to a tattoo shop. The inside of the coffee shop is basic, modern and clean! The outside is unappealing and dingy. I wouldn't visit again. Service was lacking and the chai was poorly made.

Yelp
I want to update my original review after seeing the owner's response. First, I'll clarify: my review was never meant as a personal attack on the employees. I understand they are real people, and I respect the work that goes into running a small business. My intention was to describe my experience as a paying customer, and at that time, I did not feel welcomed or well-served. The coffee itself wasn't enjoyable for me, especially considering the price point. Of course, taste is subjective, but for $7.50 a cup, I expected something much better. The service also felt cold and disengaged during my visit. Whether that's due to training, atmosphere, or simply an off day, it had a big impact on how I perceived the space. On the positive side, the café was clean and nicely decorated, and I can see how some people would enjoy the Instagram-friendly aesthetic. But for me, good coffee and genuine hospitality are what matter most in a coffee shop, and unfortunately, I didn't experience that here. I hope this feedback is received as constructive. Small businesses thrive when they listen to customers and balance pride in their team with a willingness to grow. I wish this café the best, but based on my experience, it wasn't a place I'd return to.

Yelp
I live super close and really wanted to love this spot! There's parking to the left and the outdoor seating area is awesome (it was already there from the previous coffee shop so they lucked out!) I visited 6ish months ago and was a little underwhelmed so I decided to wait awhile before trying it again. This morning I ordered the frozen sweet and creamy cold brew (a featured drink) and added whipped cream (assuming it was homemade since they charge extra for it, but it's actually straight out of a can so def skip that). The drink itself just wasn't it. Bad aftertaste. I ended up going back and the barista kindly made me a new drink. I asked for something popular to be safe and she recommended the cookie latte. Not bad but not great. Food wise - they only had 2 out of 5 breakfast tacos available (both I couldn't eat) and no bagels at all. It was only 9am.. Overall, glad I gave it another shot but it won't be my go-to spot. Maybe it's more of a tourist stop? Not sure. I do miss walking here weekly when it was Irie Bean :(

Yelp
When I tell you I never knew I needed a banana coffee in my life. Gurrrrrrrrrrrrl that coffee was PHENOMENAL. They liquidated a banana and threw her in my drink. I was here for it. We got our coffee pretty fast, and when one of my friends' first choice was out the barista made a similar suggestion. The shop is so cute and the backyard has a lot of seating with lots of shady spots for this Texas heat. It might not be on everyone's radar, but if you like a low key cutesy place with GOOD coffee, you should definitely try Dear Austin Coffee Bar. *Note: Parking is next to Chipotle right before the strip mall entrance!

Yelp
I'll be honest, this is not my favorite coffee shop in Austin. It will work in a pinch, but it is far away from being the best. Parking was ample, the interior was clean and has lots of natural light, and the drinks came out quickly. The shop was almost empty when we visited around 9:30am on a Saturday. I ordered an iced latte and the coffee flavor was a tad muted, but overall the drink was fine. I could tell I was drinking coffee, but I could not pick up on any flavors or notes from the coffee besides bitterness. When I think of Austin, one of the main things I think of are the abundance of high quality specialty coffee shops. Many of those specialty coffee shops will have house made syrups, multiple single origin coffees offered in pour over form, and a strong cup of espresso ready to enjoy as is or mixed with dairy or dairy alternative. Sadly, this shop falls a bit short in those regards. They also offer a few breakfast pastries that we did not try, but they looked pretty standard. They have a board where you can write a letter or small note and pin it up, so be sure to leave a note about how great the Texas Longhorns are. It's a convenient coffee shop that will suffice, but definitely not one I can confidently recommend.
google avatar

Christy L.

Yelp
Pretty mid coffee shop in south austin. In a city brimming with insane coffee and house made syrups, dear austin just can't quite compete. However, this coffee shop is located further away from most of the heavy hitters in the city, so it may be a good place for convenient coffee if you are in the area. I ordered an iced oat milk latte (which i diverged from my normal because the syrups here were commercial syrups). The espresso was over extracted and almost too bitter- sad!! The inside was very cute tho! There's a wall where you can write "letters to austin" and stick it on the way. Service was also quick and nice!

Yelp
Dear Austin is a fav and comes up pretty often in my rotation of cafe-play places that I frequent. Pros: They've got a dedicated parking lot on the left side of the plaza. A small but effective play spot for kids (chalk board, sand box, magnet wall). Shaded outdoor seating. Most of all I actually like their coffee drinks especially their specials. They're tasty, creative and there's usually a whimsical extra as well. For Valentine's special latte you get a mini fortune card.

Yelp
Great place to work out of. Not suitable for large groups as it doesn't have large group of seatings together but plenty of seatings. Coffee is delicious and there are also pastry items. Very clean and quirky modern style of decor in here. There is an outdoor patio in the back for better weather days. Not too crowded on Saturday afternoon when I visited.

Yelp
i have fallen victim yet again to another mediocre austin matcha shop. my friend got the strawberry matcha which is listed under the boba section; the boba was nice, warm, chewy, and sweet - everything that boba should be! however the "matcha" looked and tasted like a faint whisper. when they served it, there was about one or two streaks of green, and when mixed, the matcha disappeared altogether. the drink tasted like an expensive strawberry milk with boba. for my drink, the pink matcha, which is supposed to come with a dragonfruit foam, looked beautiful, and i was excited. upon drinking it, there was no such fruit or any kind of note really. the foam somehow tasted like nothing, and the matcha was milky yet somehow watery, and grassy. for $8, i was sincerely disappointed. overall a very cute place with love letters and adorable pop ups which are fun, however, i dislike when places are not able to deliver the flavors they promised. the workers are nice and the vibes are great, i hope they are able to improve their drinks soon ):

Yelp
Legitimately great Vietnamese coffee! Was here for their Mother's day pop-up market and snagged a few great items from local vendors. Such a great way to support locals!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute and quiet space to work while drinking coffee. Stopped in around 10:30am on Friday. Standard selection of coffee, tea and pastries plus some seasonal (like pumpkin cream latte). I would give 5 stars but don't love their policy for a half-caf Americano (they will only do if you pay double but they give you half the shots ‍).

Yelp
I live in northwest Austin but was in the sunset valley area for an event. Needed to get some school work done and found this cute little coffee shop. We went in on a Saturday evening. Parking was slightly difficult to figure out at first but we eventually got it. The place was completely empty when we went in. The girl behind the counter was super nice, just a little soft spoken, had to ask her to repeat herself a few times. I got an earl grey tea and my husband got one of their seasonal pumpkin drinks. I appreciate that they had regular cane sugar as well as honey for the tea. It's rare to find a place that serves honey. The girl also offered me a little platter for my tea bag which was so nice of her. We stayed there until 8:30 to get some schoolwork done on my laptop, almost closing time. We only saw one other group of 2 enter to get drinks. So it was primarily just us that entire evening! Bathrooms are trans friendly, which I love. The whole place just has a very relaxed friendly cute austin vibe to it.

Yelp
I originally came here for a vendor market, which ended up being rained out, but stayed for the coffee. There was quite a line so I figured it must be popular. Well, happy to report it was worth the wait. I got their signature cookie latte and it was delicious. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and it even came with a wafer cookie. It's a bit of a drive for me, but will happily come back.
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Cute decor and space...the coffee is meh. More of a space to take pictures for your Instagram than a quality coffee shop. If you're wanting a solid cup of coffee, there's sooo many other spaces in Austin where you can find one.
google avatar

Natalia R.

Yelp
Service - professional, friendly, helpful Parking - shared lot Dog and kid friendly Wifi available Great coffee drinks and options! Non dairy available. I loved that they had vegetarian and vegan options. I wish there were a few more options for nibbles and wraps but I was happy with my "chikn " one with sauce.

Yelp
I love the concept! So cool to read all the great things that have happened to people in the city. Has a cozy feel and outdoor seating area. I only ordered a cookie latte with oat milk and it was good. Service was also fast & friendly! Parking was easy.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute new coffee shop on South Lamar with a nice outdoor area. Parking - lot right night to the chipotle. I came on a Saturday morning at 9:30am and found parking just fine, but could see how it could fill up quick. Food & drink - I got 2 migas tacos and an iced green tea. It was $15 which surprised me but seems like that would be the price everywhere. My tacos were yummy, I hope they expand their food menu or have more baked goods as they were pretty all out already! They did initially forget to make my green tea but once i went up and asked they were quick to make. Seems like they had forgotten a couple of other orders as well. Ambiance - There's a nice outdoor section but I sat inside and used their wifi to work. Cute decor and overall a nice vibe for catching up on work or chatting with a friend. looking forward to seeing how this spot improves!

Yelp
We're so happy to see someone revive this neighborhood coffeeshop. We came by during their opening weekend and got to meet the new owner. Appreciate the fact that she has lived in '04 for 22 years now and frequented the previous coffeeshop. When they had to shut down, thankfully she took over rather than some chain establishment. She already runs the Cat Lounge behind Dear Austin. I love that you still feel the chill neighborhood vibe - it's not "preppy" or "chic" as most places opening these days are. It's cool, casual, inviting and relaxing. The outdoor area in the back has been put to such good use - especially love the kids sandpit and activities. Also like that she's thought about creating shade. Can't wait for their live music events on that cute stage and the puppy rescue drives! Also so excited that she brought back Mr Natural into our neighborhood - I really missed them. Dear Austin is serving wraps, sandwiches, salads and empanadas prepared by Mr Natural. I hear they will also carry Vegan Nom breakfast tacos - can hardly wait.

Saniya S.

Yelp
I came here for an F1 trivia event and loved the coffee they had! I got a cookie latte that they made Max Verstappen themed, and it had the perfect amount of cookie syrup! The interior of the cafe was also really cute and cozy. They have an outdoor section too but I wasn't able to go there due to the rain. I saw their merch too, and I'm going to make another trip back just so I can buy some. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
What a wonderful spot to grab a coffee and knock out a few work tasks. Dear Austin Coffee Bar popped up on my radar when I was in need of moving from Proud Mary to another spot since they were closing at 4pm. Finding DACB open and a short drive, I figured why not and go check it out. There are a few spots to utilize for parking and I knew I was in for something special as I was walking in through their enclosed courtyard. The interior is like a flashback to a 50s diner and they have a meny beyond coffee including alcoholic and zero proof cocktails. You'll even find boba tea on the menu! My favorite part were the love letters to Austin which was a nice touch.

Yelp
Went here on grand opening day so want to give some flexibility here as I have faith this place will likely be better in the future. Forgot to get pics of the drinks but ordered the cookie latte and also got to try matcha boba. I am going to keep things short and sweet because that saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. Back patio area is really big and very cool, live music is supposed to occur weekly and could be an awesome spot to hangout. Inside is whatever, very copy and paste, trendy clean coffee shop. Doesn't have a lot of authentic soul to me but overall fine. My cookie latte was a 7 out of 10 so pretty good! Decent sweetness and unique cookie type flavor. The boba I got to try was easily the worst I have ever had and was extremely watery without much sweetness or flavor. Workers there were nice and the theme of the restaurant with writing letters to Austin is probably cool to some people.

Yelp
really cute place, sufficient seating indoor and at the backyard. Coffee tastes really nice as well. The location looks a little un-appealing, but you go inside and have the coffee and the slight disappointment just vanishes. Cannot wait to come back for more :) Parking is sufficient, staff is friendly.

Yelp
Cute. Progressive. DEFINITELY Trans friendly. Great merchandise. Great merchandise at an eyebrow raising price. Tasteless insipid espresso. Wonderful sweet drinks. If you come here, think sugar bomb and you will be okay. I had a custom seasonal pumpkin latte. It is the only pumpkin coffee I have ever had that actually tastes authentically and really like pumpkin. i.e. It tastes like a real squash and not like artificial holiday flavor. They say they make their own pumpkin cream. Their own pumpkin cream is pretty damm fine. The house smells mildly of mildew when you enter it. But the ventilation is good. You barely notice things forty seconds into your stay. Some old buildings are just old buildings. They have rectified the situation as best they can. They have a wall with love letters to Austin - written on special memo notes dedicated to Austin. You can buy blank memo notes from their merchandise section. You have to want to write a love letter to Austin really badly in order to pay the prices they want for that notepad. The back has the garden they share with East Side King and a few other establishments. The garden is keep Austin weird. It is full of art. There is a playground for the kids. Some of the seats have shade. The garden is a cool place to hang out. You would not want to work in the garden. And given the cutesy decoration (and the traces of mildew) I would not want to make Dear Austin a work destination. But the place has its charms. Think of Dear Austin as an adorable bubble tea place that also does a lot of coffee drinks ... And think of Dear Austin as a place to go with a girl friend. (This is not a place for macho types or tech bros.) If you need a pink drink ... This is a good place to get one.

Yelp
I decided to come by after seeing a TikTok about an event they are having soon. The first thing I noticed is how bright and clean the entire place looked. I got the lavender matcha which was a little bit on the pricey side but it was very good! Overall felt very relaxed to get my work done here and I can't wait to come back for their future events!

Alexus G.

Yelp
Barista was nice and recommended the cookie latte me and my sibling love the lattes here the espresso is smooth and flavorful. i highly recommend

Yelp
Looking for a feel-good, family-friendly coffee spot? This place has indoor seating and an outdoor patio with a sand box for kids to play. Spend some time here reading the cute letters that customers leave (wifi-included). The manager and service here were so friendly! This coffee bar offers craft coffee, boba tea, and a curated selection of wine and local beers. They also serve to-go breakfast tacos & pastries.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
It's a cute small coffee shop. They have all the lattes, matcha, teas you could need. The lattes were too small to be charging $8. 8I for the cookie latte which was over $9 despite not getting the extra cookie and whipped cream. Love an ALL iced latee.....gross and cheap.
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a sweet charming spot for a little pick me up coffee/ frosè. From the sweet baristas to the relaxing music. This is such a cute place for a date or drinks with the girls. Highly recommended coming here

Yelp
Love this coffee shop! Staff is super nice and efficient. The back patio/yard is such a vibe and I will be back for the $5 mimosas!

Yelp
A beautifully curated inclusive NEW coffee spot is about to open up on South Lamar They are a WELCOME addition to the beautiful community as everyone is treated equally Whether you're a true Austinite or a transplant, you feel comfortable! They have QUALITY coffee, boba and snacks with a cute backyard at affordable prices Check it out and let me know what you think! - gillynova

Yelp
I hope that they stay around. Open for less than two months, but has already found its way into my routine. it's in the same area as Eastside Kings. So much seating outside and quite a bit of seating inside. No plugs outside so if you need to work, make sure that you find a place inside. But once you're outside, there's lots of cover so you're not gonna burn up. Not a ton of variety in the way of food, but they do have you covered for some snacks and breakfast tacos. They have a decent baked good selection too. What really stood out is the service. Even with them being so new they were really nice and just seemed excited. I'll keep coming back here. The coffee was really good and I was able to get a lot of work done. Still not a lot of people coming here since it's so new.

Yelp
My 5-year-old and I have been wanting to check out Dear Austin coffee shop for a while now because I've been seeing all their cute posts on Instagram. We finally made it in, and it is so charming - we loved it! Here's what I loved: Ambiance: The ambiance is perfect - the inside has a retro Austin vibe and is cute and cozy. There's a outdoor area that's fantastic for kids. My little one had a blast in the sandbox - it kept her entertained while we were there. The staff were great - incredibly nice and friendly, which is sometimes hard to find these days. Coffee: The coffee here is amazing! My favorite is the Macchiato - it's absolutely delicious. And if you have a sweet tooth, you have to try their Cookie Latte. My husband got it and loved it. Extra perks: Their patio. Probably one of the largest patios for a coffee shop that I have seen in Austin. Great to work out there or visit during one of the special events or happy hours. Overall, Dear Austin is a great coffee shop for all. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Alicia A.

Yelp
This coffee shop was so cute and quaint, I loved the love letter wall and wide open outdoor seating. I got the cookie latte, which was perfectly smooth with just the right amount of sweet! 10/10 definitely recommend!

Yelp
Came back and brought my husband who absolutely LOVED his coffee -- said it packed quite a punch, which thrilled me because he was "desperate for good strong coffee" after a long day of adventures around town. Since I'm an Austinite from birth and my husband is a transplant, it only seemed fitting to bring him here, where there are bathrooms specifically labeled for locals and transplants -- so adorable.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoy frequenting our local Austin coffee shops and when Dear Austin opened it was no different. The concept is a fun concept of writing a note to someone and placing it on the wall and the coffee is great alongside the offerings from Mr. Natural. If there was one thing I would find fault with, it would be the attitude of the baristas. Every time we visit, irrespective of the barista, they never have a smile on their face and never engage their customers..... and this is every single one, not just one of them. So for a place called Dear Austin it's kind of a strange feeling because the lack of engagement makes you feel unwelcome. It's a feeling I never have encountered at any other coffee shop in Austin. Anyone can have a bad day but when that's a baseline I feel it takes away from the experience and what the coffee shop is intended to be. With that being said coffee shops are about coffee and they do serve coffee that I will go back for so for that I give 4 stars but if we judged baristas as well, likely would have been 3.

Yelp
This was our staple the week we were in Austin! Even bought some swag! Love this hidden gem

Yelp
Super cute place with lots of personality! I got the pink matcha and it was honestly the best matcha I've had at a study cafe in Austin :) There is also a good amount of parking spots and free wifi.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute deco, liked reading the Dear Austin letters on the wall :) . Had a colorful latte that unfortunately had no flavor. A/c wasn't at a comfortable temperature. Lots of work space, nice patio.
google avatar

Yelp
They have a very kind staff with indoor and outdoor seating. You can easily miss it on SoLa but worth the stop by! They're pretty limited in parking but fairly priced and a great small shop to work in
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
I saw this shop posted by @austinthings2do on Instagram and had to try it! I'm so glad I did, it has a great atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating options, and is very aesthetic! Parking is available in the front of the building or to the side. I had their specialty Iced Cookie Latte and it was so good! Will definitely be back :)
google avatar

Layla P.

Yelp
Cute Austin coffee shop, coffee is good. The barista/cashiers always seem like they are annoyed with you being there though. And the pastry/food situation is awful. They just have old vegan whole wheat pastries wrapped in plastic wrap that no one wants. If they had actual good breakfast pastries, and smiled a little, they would be so much more successful.
google avatar

Yelp
Great experience, great coffee and just a fun place to go spend some time. The weight staff is very friendly especially Kaiya, she is amazing!

Ashley K.

Yelp
This new coffee shop on S. Lamar is the cutest!! I had a yummy coffee, and not 1, but TWO delish (I think homemade!) lemon muffins. It has something for everyone - great indoor/outdoor (with shade) work space for remote workers, drinks and an adorable outdoor bar for the HH crowd, and a PERFECT spot for parents to hang out (frose and mimosas!) while kids are entertained with the outdoor play space! Plus they're doing events like open mic nights and a vendor market - how cool. And I especially love the dedicated love to Austin. Last but not least, it's a single-mama, woman-owned business - and I always try to support the hard working mamas out there! I'll definitely be back many times.

Yelp
I love finding a new place to hang out for coffee! Super friendly baristas, great vibes, and I'm a sucker for their branding and their blue whipped cream. Excited to go back!

Yelp
One of our favorite coffee spots!!! The service is awesome and the coffee is delicious! Plus the vibe encapsulates the spirit of SoLa!!

Yelp
My first experience at Dear Austin was on the opening weekend, and although they were swamped, the service was excellent, as were the drinks and food. It has a very chill vibe, and I think the letter idea is very in line with the Dear Austin theme--super cool. I even wrote a letter, although I doubt anyone can read my writing!  I dropped by again a last weekend to see how they were doing and was pleased to see they were still on point. This time we got a few breakfast tacos, coffee, and a little bit of Dear Austin swag to take home. I was especially happy to see the "later wall" filling up. Cheers to whoever had that idea. It's a great way for people to positively engage with the brand. I'm looking forward to making "Dear Austin" one of my regular stops along South Lamar for years to come. Thanks to the whole staff for creating an excellent experience for your fellow Austinites!!!

Yelp
Overprice 8 dollars for a coffee that didn't taste so gross. I felt like I just threw away 8 dollars :/ but it's looks pretty clean bathrooms and the staff was really nice and the place was clean too soo maybe I didn't order the right thing but still very expensive for a small amount of coffee

Mike S.

Yelp
Nice music nice staff. But it smelled strongly of cleaning agents like bleach or something. And they should get a new toaster! It took a long time and the toasted bagel was still not very toasty.

Lc C.

Yelp
Great Place! Staff, coffee and Treats are all on point! Perfect location for working/chillin' and the location is great. Highly recommended- come enjoy!
