The Cocktail Heatmap: Where to Drink Right Now in Portland

"Part cocktail bar and part cafe, Dear Sandy lived-in atmosphere is reminiscent of someone’s aunt’s stuck-in-the-’70s living room. Friends cozy up on vintage upholstered sofas under stained glass chandeliers while sipping on Espresso Depressos (rum, espresso, Cynar, Borghetti) and non-alcoholic apple cider vinegar toddies. Specialty coffee and tea drinks are plentiful here, but day drinkers will also find “breakfast cocktails,” like the orange liqueur-flavored Cigarettes & Coffee. Vegan drinkers will appreciate that aquafaba can be substituted for the egg white that tops a couple of the menu’s cocktails." - Janey Wong, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First time at this hidden gem, and I was pleasantly surprised. Dear Sandy delivers something special—mixing cozy café comfort with the energy of a low-key bar. The space was decked out for Halloween, adding just the right amount of spooky charm without overdoing it. Not to forget, the staff is patient with you as you will be with them. Warm and inviting to guests and will really take their time 1 on 1 before moving onto another customer. This level of hospitality and respect goes a long way! Inside, vintage furniture and funky light installations created a perfect balance of warmth and quirk. On this particular night, people were working, trading books, and sipping themed drinks. It felt like a space that encourages creativity and community—definitely worth a return visit. I’ll have to check it out during the day!

Um!! Impeccable! Was recommended from the owner of another great bar (Too Soon) and so glad I went in because the ambiance was SO cozy, fun, and unique. The drinks were perfect. But the real star of the show was bartender Michelle and her coworker. (I didn’t catch his name!) So warm and personable. I immensely enjoyed my time here!!! Thanks yall ☺️

This is a fun spot. Cafe vibes with coffee drink options but also full stock bar. I went specifically for cocktails at 2pm on a Friday. A lot of bars don't open until like 4pm or after so my friend and I started our food/drink hop here. I recommend using the bathroom closest to the bar. You'll get a kick out of it :)

I needed to make some updates to an article I was writing on Medium, but no coffee shops were open. I looked on Yelp and found this place, open till Midnight; it was around 10:30pm so it was perfect. The barista/bartender (oh yeah, this is a coffee shop/bar) made me a custom drink. He made me a latte with pear syrup sweetener and orange peel shavings on top. It was unexpectedly good. Like I said, it has a bar, but it still maintains the coffee cafe vibe.

Such a cool spot! The vibes are fun and friendly. The sweetest staff with great recommendations. We drove from newberg for one drink and obviously stayed for more and ended up closing the place down. We will definitely be back. Thank you ladies for a great little night out.

I went for a drink with a friend. The place was cute inside. I ordered a Citrus County with gin, but when I got the drink, it wasn’t tasty. I couldn’t even taste the gin. It was watery. So I talked to the bartender, and his response was: 'I can add one more shot of gin, but I’ll have to charge you $5.' I was surprised that he wanted to charge me extra for fixing a drink that I had already paid for and didn’t taste right. I ended up paying for the extra shot, even that I don’t think that’s the right way to treat a costumer. Anyway I will probably not gonna come back to be treated like that again.

This is my favorite bar in Portland! The owners and staff are so friendly and warm. The decor is an incredible collection of genuine vintage items that is lovingly curated. The drinks are clever and well balanced and the food is really good, classic fare. I especially recommend the Smoke and Spice cocktail and the hummus platter. I became an instant regular with the Crafternoon gatherings hosted there every Mondays and love that their alcohol-free drinks are just as good as their full-proof cocktails.

Yelp
dear sandy is such a cute coffee/cocktail bar! i love the concept, and decor is very well done. highly recommend checking it out!! we came for some mid morning drinks on a monday. service was relatively quick once we ordered, tho we did have to wait a bit to order since there was one bartender. people were sitting working, chatting, eating, etc. it is a very welcoming space where can enjoy yourself. the menu looks really great and has a good variety of drinks. we were happy with the simple iced tea and yummy late that we got.

Yelp
Dear Sandy - Thank you for the sweetness that you gave me in the form of kind conversation from the staff and your thoughtfully made drinks and food for me to eat. I adore your cuteness and left feeling seen and cared for. Love, C

Yelp
Hmmm...Headed over to Dear Sandy to hang and knit for awhile while others were still shopping in the neighborhood. The 1970s were definitely in the house, the couches, tables and lighting fixtures all reminded me of the Partridge Family years. We got a couple of flat whites, an iced matcha and lime drink and an oat and chocolate bar. Drinks were solid. Staff working behind the bar were all great.

Yelp
Five stars. What a vibe this place is. They do a mean espresso tonic here and the cocktails are excellent, too. The baristas/bartenders are delightful folks who are good at what they do and are so lovely. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Such a cool new bar on Sandy Blvd! They have some great cocktails, and zero proof options, as well as some light bite options. Definitely a cool place to meet up with friends and hang out. The best part though honestly it's the bathrooms. Each bathroom is decorated differently and they are a true secret gem. Definitely check them out.

Yelp
I'll preface this review by saying the concept here is great! I love that I could finish my work day with a latte then switch to an adult bevy all in the same place- how appealing! We stopped by to check the place out this afternoon. It wasn't very busy, yet we weren't greeted or even acknowledged. That's fine, people are busy! We found a wet menu at the end of the bar and decided on a few drinks that were legible from the menu. We waited in line and when it was our turn to order, service was painfully slow. It appeared that the bartender was new or going through training, which I absolutely give grace to, but 15 minutes to make two drinks that are featured on your menu is a pretty significant amount of time. The real kicker here is that the bartender still did not say a word through this entire interaction. A friendly smile or slight acknowledgment goes a long way, especially when you're paying $15 for a drink with old garnishes. It's a cute place, and maybe they still have some kinks to work out. I'd stop by in the future as again, the concept is great- but they fell short in quite a few areas

Yelp
The cutest place! The vibes are strong here, great customer service, really tasty cocktails, simple but DELICIOUS food menu, super cute thrifted decor! Feels so warm and welcoming as soon as you walk in! There's a strong coffee program here also and honestly there's not a ton of places you can get a great latte at 11pm in Portland so I think that's so great! Definitely go check it out!

Yelp
Great bar right off Sandy and 28th. Vibes are good, drinks are unique and the space is great to kick back and enjoy coffee or a cocktail.

Yelp
This place is excellent. I'd gone when they had just opened and they were still figuring out some of their drinks and you could tell they took that process really seriously, aiming for feedback. They've since refined their menu and it's excellent, great all around spot for coffee and lunch, or drinks and snacks at night.
