The Best Italian Delis in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Go to Dearborn Italian Bakery to experience one of the best meatball subs in the city, but also to try their specialty pizzas. The breakfast, chicken shawarma, and taco pizza aren’t traditionally Italian, but that’s also what makes this bakery so fun. A great place for groceries and hot food alike — Dearborn Italian Bakery has been in the community since the 1960’s." - Danny Palumbo

I’ve been going here for 30 years! The best thing about it is the Zesty Pizza Rolls taste the exact same! Consistency is a good thing and it’s lacking in most places today. All of their food is great, everyone is always so nice. Highly recommend!

Love this place! I have been shopping at DIB for over 30 years, and it never disappoints. Pizza, hot entrees, sandwiches, deserts and the friendliest staff. Delicious!

I used to come here when I was in middle school, and now I've been coming here again with a middle schooler of my own! I started coming back here in February of 2023, after a 20 year hiatus The first few times I was pretty put off by one specific employee's apparent attitude. Her attitude was just awful. I'm going to assume my review got passed along, or she just chilled out, idk, because she hasn't been rude to me ever since. The food though is SO good! Just like I remember! Its consistently made well. Also, I love that they have some staple foods to buy there when you want to make your own Italian foods. It's so nice being able to go there for whole milk mozzarella instead of having to go all the way to Kroger

I’m addicted to the Godfather subs every time I try to change it up. So hard to do and I personally like the individual lasagna. Usually, I would like more meat on it, but for some reason the way they prepare it is almost perfect.

I know This place is a staple and a landmark in the history of the city of Dearborn and I’ve been going there since I was a five-year-old kid 30 years ago. Since then a lot has changed, and I noticed the frown to smile in this place from customer to customer by the employees. I finally came to realize it’s not customer to customer. It’s white person to Arab. Since noticing the racism pouring out of this place, I’ve noticed nasty things in my food like foot-long hairs that feel like they were intentionally placed in there because I’m Arabic. I’ll spare the employees here having to be nasty and make the public service announcement for them By saying Arabs are not welcome here.

I've personally never been here, but my dad DID go here this week. He's been wanting to try this place for a long time. He bought a lasagna, 2 pepperoni rolls, and a garlic bread to go. The pepperoni rolls were trash. There was like 8 pieces in a giant roll. So 90% of the roll was just plain bread. The lasagna we had to cook ourselves. We did . And it tasted like.... Lasagna. No better or worse than what you'd try from Meijer or something. Onto the garlic bread. It was a half of a loaf. Cut long ways. Smothered in butter and herbs. But it didn't soak all the way through.... So half of your slice of garlic bread is just plain stale white bread. This place didn't amaze me. I wasn't super thrilled. I definitely won't be going back. I've looked at the pictures that people have posted. That is NOT what they served us. The pepperoni rolls were embarrassing. I've seriously had better at a gas station. (Baffos rolls)

Google
Small space and parking lot, but on the inside are delicious baked goods and smiles -- the place seems well-staffed. Stop in for bread, sandwiches, pastries, a slice of pizza, even a whole pizza -- leave smiling!

Google
I believe the girl that helped me Her name was Anita. Had the ham and cheese as you recommended. It was off the hook. Can’t wait to try the lasagna and garlic bread. Thanks love see you soon. when I tasted the ham and cheese, it was like the one I tasted when I was 12 years old I will definitely be coming back 01/30-went back today And got the meatball sub and man it was the best going back tomorrow for their daily special on pepperoni rolls. I can honestly tell you that this is one of the best Italian bakeries in Michigan. 3/18- thank you little mama, had the Crestwood🥰. Till next time little mama

Yelp
A classic for a reason, always have fresh good pizza for a cheap price, and other sandwich and pep roll options which are good too. Love the staff and a great place to swing by for a quick lunch.

Yelp
Wanted Maltese Pastizzi. They have them, but frozen only. Other Maltese delights as well. Also wonderful cannoli and Italian cookies. A bonus was the friendly and kind service. I will return. Highly recommend

Yelp
Bought some Dearborn bakery gourmet fig & pistachio scones today. Very disappointed. Absolutely no taste, dry and I gave up looking for the figs and pistachios. Ended up with a plate of plain bread crumbs after trying to cut and butter it.

Yelp
Breakfast pizza?? Ok day late from national pizza day and heard about this glorious breakfast pizza on the radio. Since my boyfriend loves pizza and we both had the day off we decided to make a trip here (he's east side!). We each got a slice in addition to cannoli and a cookie shaped like a pair of lips. We ate the pizza in the car- crust, egg, and either ham, bacon, and cheddar or spinach and feta. Glorious! Definitely worth the detour.

Yelp
Always a stop when coming to Dearborn Heights, a must have!!!Best pizza around!Has not changed one bit in 50 years.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
I was hoping for more home made items and hot food. If you are looking for some sweets it is worth a stop. A selection of cookies and cannolis.
google avatar

Yelp
In a dearborn where all the new restaurants popping up charge $20 for a sandwich, it's nice to see a restaurant that has been local for generations to price their food fairly. Their pizza is consistent along with everything else they offer. The tradition continues.

Yelp
I was running errands in the area and told my husband I'd bring home a pizza for dinner. Unfortunately shortly after I promised this I realized I left my debit card at home and was cashed out. So I gave him a ring and asked if he could call our order in and see if they'd take payment over the phone. Spoiler alert: THEY DO. So we ordered a make and take pizza, some bread, cannoli, and lunch meat. He paid over the phone and I ran in to pick it up. Our order was already ready, bagged and waiting for me on top of the deli counter. Easy peasy and particularly convenient during the pandemic. It was my first time in since COVID and I was happy to see everyone was fully masked and plexiglass was installed around the counters to protect staff and customers alike. It's such a small space it made me nervous to pop in but I was reassured by all their precautions.

Yelp
I REALLY like this bakery and have been going there for years. The pizza and desserts are always top notch. I don't understand why they are so stingy with their salad dressing. You order the large antipasto salad and they only give you 2 packets of dressing. Their large clearly feeds 6-8 people and yet only 2 packets of dressing?? And if you ask for more you get charged. They really need to consider buying in bulk and having small containers of dressing rather than handing out packets.

Joe H.

Yelp
the cookies are hard enough to chip a tooth and they had no S cookies After I called and asked. Although they said they had them over the phone
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Baked items were fresh. Pepperoni cheese roll good. Bread good, slice of pizza average. Was excited to go here, but it was simply ok. The prices were definitely high. Better can be had cheaper elsewhere.

Yelp
Great selection and delicious looking pizzas and pastries. My new favorite Italian market in the Detroit area

Yelp
I found out about this place from my best friend who grew up eating it. I am beyond obsessed. I usually get an unbaked 2-3 times a month. I love their unbaked pizza. I usually get it with just cheese. It comes with instructions on how to cook it(even I can't mess it up). The sauce is great. I have learned people either love it or hate it. And I am beyond sold. I have gotten their huge lunch slices and have tried different toppings that they have that day, and cheese is still my favorite. The breakfast pizza is beyond out of this world. Update: found out their subs are beyond awesome! Yummy bread, fresh veggies and cheese! Love this place

Yelp
I've always enjoyed coming here over the years, but now that they offer halal pepperoni I am very pleased. They obviously didn't have to do that but I think it's going to help increase business for them in the area and I hope it works. They have a decent variety of baked goods that includes pizzas, pepperoni rolls, subs and desserts. I just ate one of their halal pepperoni rolls and I am quite satisfied. There are plenty of places to get Italian pastries, but we have to support the mom and pop shops.

Hass H.

Yelp
really disappointed ., I don't know how they have 4 stars., As a rule, At least not in a commercial environment. The issue is cross contamination, meat and cheese should never be sliced on the same slicer. The manager, really rude, when I asked the employee not to give me the very first slice of cheese., after finding out they use the same slicer.. if I can give 1/2 star maybe

Karen L.

Yelp
Ladies behind the deli counter are super rude! One was very snippy and rude and the other was coughing her brains out without any masks. She touched my food with her bare hands, coughing the entire time and no gloves. Not sanitary at all. Very disgusting. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Older blonde lady at the cash register was super sweet though. And the man behind the counter was nice. Just the ladies behind the deli...awful service!
google avatar

Bernadette B.

Yelp
I was leaning towards giving this place 3.5 stars, but if I had to pick, I'm willing to give them the full 4. I've been familiar with this place with years, and their fresh pizza and pizza rolls are solid choices. I'm a big fan of their sandwiches for lunch, and they're very quick on the order. The tasty desserts are solid but nothing life altering. Sometimes they have hot food you can take. I've seen the standard Italian lasagna which was okay, to Asian chicken fried rice? Yeah. I didn't try it. In all, a solid local business to go to.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this bakery. The pepperoni bread and lasagna were both perfect! Their prices are fair and worth the drive if you don't live close!

Karen C.

Yelp
Been coming here for years .. they have great pizza..but the new people working there are Rude.

Yelp
Pizza is sooo good. Rivals jets for me. Great fresh/bakery pizza. Subs and stuffed cabbage are delicious too. Haven't tried desserts yet. People are very friendly, my family loves this place! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
I love this little local bakery. Unbaked pizzas are delicious. Sometimes the pastries are hit or miss...for example, the paczki with cannoli filling is usually delicious, the chocolate brownies are very dense but bland. The hot food selections are usually delicious. I take 1 star away just because you never know what kind of customer service you'll get here. Sometimes it's great and sometimes not. I've been there when employees are either arguing, getting a stern talking to, or ignoring customers near closing time because they're too busy cleaning and yapping away with each other, they all assume someone else is going to work the counter.
google avatar

Kristin K.

Yelp
My friend had their take and bake pizza for a dinner party and it was sooooo good!!!! I definitely recommend this for any get togethers or parties! You would not expect this to be a take and bake pizza. I rate it 10/10! Go try it for yourself!

Yelp
Growing up in Dearborn & Warrendale (area of Detroit near Fairlane) the Dearborn Italian Bakery is a staple and a little piece of home. I love their pizza! Simple and delicious. It doesn't matter what kind you get because they are all amazing. I enjoy the spinach & feta (OMG try the breakfast version!) when I'm not sure what to get. I love that it doesn't have a red sauce on it. I am not a huge fan of a lot sauce in pizza. With that being said I do love their sauce! It is why they are my favorite pizza. I remember getting their giant pizzas in the 90s for every birthday party I had. DIB also supplied our school with cheese/pepperoni rolls and pizza at lunch in the late 90s. I learned from a friend that dipping my hot cheese roll in ketchup wasn't too shabby. A practice I still keep at times. The Dibby sandwich is a fun sandwich that is a cheese & pepperoni roll with sauce, extra cheese, ham, etc stuffed in it! If you like all of those items in a perfectly baked roll you are in for a treat! The only downside to DIB can be their prices. Look for coupons in the local papers for deli coupons and pepperoni roll coupons. I find their Parmesan, pasta, deli, and pizza prices reasonable and worth it. On the plus side the staff are always helpful and polite. The deli counter, bakery items, and hot foods are well maintained and staffed. They also carry a great selection of harder to find (as well as every day) pasta noodles. Lastly, they carry Young's pastizzi! As a Maltese woman who can make her own pastizzi of needed, I appreciate an authentic frozen option that I can bake quickly. Pastizzi dough can be a lot to make. (Not sure what pastizzi are? Pastizzi.com or Google will help) If you're nearby check out DIB for a snack or a slice of pizza. It's worth the trip. PS- They now have halal pepperoni rolls!

Yelp
OMG I been going there since 1972 when it was across the street next to the cleaners , Pizza was 65cent a slice My buddy Jay Hansen and i played strike out at Haigh elementary School all morning and take a time out for lunch and ride our bikes to DIB, WOW I can taste that grease from the pepperoni now and I am 3000 miles away We since move out of old Dearborn but when we come back that's automatic DIB all the way!!!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Best homemade spaghetti sauce and marinara sauce I've ever had. Fresh baked bread is always worth my visit.

Eric L.

Yelp
My wife has been talking about DIB since I met her - she is from Dearborn. We're visiting for the Detroit Marathon so we had to stop in. WOW! The place is outstanding. The ladies behind the counter were so helpful and even interacted with our 3 year old daughter while we looked around. The BEST cinnamon bread I've ever had. The pepperoni roll...I always questioned this...I was so wrong. Amazing! Ate the bread. Bought the shirt.

Yelp
I grew up in this area, and now that I live in Milford, I miss all the good Italian Bakeries in Wayne County. Today I was heading to Detroit for my Covid vaccine, and was planning on stopping at Villa Bakery in Garden City for Pizza Breads (for me) and cannolis for my husband. A quick google search told me they were closed on Mondays, so I went to DIB. Their take and bake pizza was a staple in the 90's with my best friend, and they also have great cannoli. I had never tried their pepperoni bread, but decided to grab a few to bring home. Also at 10:30am had an amazing mammoth slice of pizza. I damn near unhinged my jaw like a snake to eat it. I am now trying to plan a time to drive down and get more goodness.

Yelp
Best Italian bakery eva! So many fresh delicious treats to choose from. I purchased a cookie assortment. Very nice variety. And there pot roast was so tasty. I wish I lived there, I would go on the regular, I happen to be visiting and glad we stumbled on this place. I highly recommend!!

Yelp
Pepperoni Pizza slices are good, but I am a fan of the filled pepperoni bread . Lasagna was ok, I heard it was good but I think it's ok ! The cannolis are the bomb ! I have not tried any other sweets but these are my fav ! Will come back for cannolis
google avatar

Yelp
You call this pizza? Heavy, wet and old pepperoni. You will gain five pounds a slice. The worst pizza in Michigan. I have tried this place about 10 times and it's always bad food. The bakery is always clean and it definitely has an Italian feel. My biggest complaint is that the pizza sits under hot lights for long periods. Is it fresh?
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Went in here today expecting a huge bakery with lots of shelves of bread and desserts. Boy did I have the wrong expectation. Here's what I saw, A small place where you can barely move with only a few people in the place. Rarely anything looked fresh. Brownies looking hard. Cupcakes siting for awhile. Pieces of pizza that were bagged and sitting on the counter. Such a poor selection. A coffee station in the corner. A deli. Some shelves with products that made it look more like a convenience store instead of a bakery. I bought some Italian bread for $2.25, which was terrible. It was the airiest, lightest, bread with a huge hole down one side--see attached picture. Don't they even know how to bake bread here?! The cashier was friendly, that's about the only positive thing I can say. Not worth the trip at all.
google avatar

Shelly A.

Yelp
Go here today, order pizza, splurge on a homemade cannoli or French horn. Get some pasta to go, fresh bread for sandwiches tomorrow. I love this place, occasionally find coupons on a postal insert. Same staff as always, spinach feta pizza doesn't disappoint. Can get pricey, easily spend $30 on a visit.
google avatar

Mo A.

Yelp
My go to place, a bit over priced but the only old school bakery left in the city. They do have daily specials and the subs are veryyyyy gooddd
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Got some cookies and a couple slices of pizza. Service was quick and friendly. Pizza was very good. Thicker crust but very good. Sauce on the pizza is very good. The cookies were very good. The pink, green, and yellow ones with chocolate are very good.

Sarah M.

Yelp
I love the food here but the manager is a complete b**ch. Was talking to one of the girls about the food and she came up and yelled that "social time is over" and practically kicked me out of the bakery. Can't believe how sh**ty the management is, I'm surprised they still have workers. I hope they realize how terrible they make the restaurant look with the way they treat their employees and customers.

Sandy M.

Yelp
The BEST!! I grew up not too far from this place. I don't live in Dearborn anymore but when I come in to Dearborn I make sure I stop and get me at least some pizza. Here's to many more years for Dearborn Italian bakery!!
google avatar

Perparim I.

Yelp
I'd say this is the best Italian shop around they have great pizza also have other prepared food that are amazing if you never been to this place I highly recommend it, I've been going here for years and they are as usual great

Yelp
I may end up giving this place a different rating once I try more but based on what we got yesterday I feel it is appropriate. We were using this place as a turn around on Ford road and my husband saw a sign about cannoli so he insisted on going in. We walked in and found it to be rather small but full of fun stuff. They had a big shelf full of prepackaged goodies right when you walk in but when you walked around it you found various hot and cold entrees, a guy making made to order sandwiches with fresh cut meats on house made bread and a small but well filled pastry case. Ding ding we found cannoli and decided to each get a regular and a chocolate covered to try. My husband was drooling about the eclairs so he added one and I decided to try the baklava too. The service was quick and friendly. They were chatty with us and nice. We wandered a bit after. I was happy to see they carry three different kinds of Italian sausage, pizza and pepperoni rolls and lots of salads I found intriging. Lots of things in the refrigerator cases and shelves that I liked. If I were not budgeting for Christmas and already stocked at home I probably would have bought more but I am trying to be good. An update will be coming I promise you. We get home and of course dive into our pastries. The cannoli is just perfect, all creamy and sweet with chocolate chips to enliven, nuts on the end and the shell is perfectly crisp. My husband of course prefers the chocolate covered shell which is the same as the original cannoli and while covered in nice dense chocolate it retains a goodly amount of the crispness of the shell. His eclair is wonderful too. Sweet custard, flaky dough and topped with the delicious chocolate sauce they have here. He is very happy indeed despite his scowl about my bite. I don't think he would have shared but I told him it was for reviewing purposes and he gave in. The baklava is a huge disappointment, though it is a really big piece. Soggy, heavy and no real taste. It makes me kinda sad but trust me it does not stop me from going back. In hindsight it is a bad idea to get baklava at an Italian bakery really.
google avatar

Lauren N.

Yelp
I love this bakery. Everything is reasonably priced and delicious. The pepperoni rolls are amazing as is the pizza and lasagna. The deli salads are also good. I have zero complaints. The ladies ghat work there are also always kind and friendly.
google avatar

Bryan B.

Yelp
My gf wanted to get some cannolis, I figure this would be a good excuse to head over to Dearborn and see what this Italian bakery was like. Went in at about 4pm, so it was pretty busy. Despite that, the line went fast. The desserts, pizza, and deli was kinda one assembly line with like 5-6 workers back there to help you out. It's a good system and works great with gettin the line down. We got one of those bake at home pizzas (which was not all that great). I'm thinkin maybe it's better to get the ones baked in house. Maybe next time. Got some stuff from the deli and of course, the cannolis. I'm not much of a cannoli guy, but if you are, they do 'em right here. They weren't sitting around pre-made and soggy, which is huge. I think it's worth another visit, so I'll be back.

Yelp
Tuesday is Sub Day. Wow. How has it taken me a year to find the DIB? I've worked in Dearborn since last December and seem to fall back into the same patterns and chasing down places with the best coupons. At the DIB there is no need for coupons. Tuesday is sub day. $3.49 for a 6in and $6.99 for a 12in sub, which includes a 16oz fountain pop. I just smashed the #3 meatball sub and as Jim Ross would say for all your wrestling fans, "MY GAWD, MY GAWD. HE HIT HIM WITH A STEEL CHAIR!!!" Well all of that applies accept for the steel chair portion. When the guy (presumably an owner, owners son, whatever) behind the counter handed me my subs, he said "enjoy, they are the best subs goin'," man he wasn't kidding. The meatballs and sauce were homemade, I believe the sub buns are homemade and combined with the melted mozzarella this was bar none the best meatball sub I've ever had...BOOOO YAAAA my day is complete. Since I'm an aspiring fat guy, I also went with a 6in Italian sub. A dessert if you will. Man it did not disappoint either. Not the GOAT, absolutely worth eating again. The homemade italian dressing was off the chain though. With each sub you can choose your bread, toppings and sauce/dressing if you want something other than how it's listed. There are other aspects to the DIB like the bakery, deli counter, imported foods etc., but I didn't sample any of those. Strictly subs on this visit. I did howerver spy some delicious meat lasgasna for $2.79 a serving that was freshly made and set out as I was in line. I will be more than tempted to roll a 6in sub and fat piece of lasgasna on my next visit. If you can't tell I'm really happy right now. I feel like I just met my soulmate...if soulmates could be meatballs.

Ahmad A.

Yelp
Cookies are good Pizza decent Lasagna disgusting Olive garden has better options.... yeah I went there...

Yelp
I have passed by this bakery numerous times and it wasn't until yesterday prompted by a friend I stopped in for a slice. Welcomed by a sweet woman at the counter I asked if they had slices available and she replied yes. My eyes followed the direction of her pointing and there they were 3 large pies. One I can't remember, pepperoni - of course (which looked tasty), andddddd of course spinach and feta. I gave a kool aid smile and pointed. She smiled and said, "good choice one spinach and feta " For $2.50 I was satisfied. Grateful for my friend. And will be back. This time for a slice and to browse.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
I stop in here occasionally. Mainly for their cannoli and a slice of pizza. The slices are big, but they're always a little undercooked in my opinion. Cute small bakery.
google avatar

Stephen S.

Yelp
I think about this place obsessively. The pizza is great, the pastry is great and the bread is spectacular. I'm trying the subs next.

Bob H.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to try the Breakfast pizza at work one day. WOW. FANTASTIC. No Joke. You have to get it. Since then i stop at least once a wk. Every thing is delicious. I tell everyone i meet.My wife Lisa just loves it also Keep up the Great work.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Most of the stuff they sell is not home made. Most of what they sell comes from outside Vendors Some of the bread is ok. Not enough parking for the lunch time crowd.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
I love this place! Would definitely recommend the pizza rolls to anyone looking for a quick bite and the pizza isn't too shabby either. The line can be a bit long sometimes but it never takes long. It's a must if you're in the area!
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Love the unbaked pizza here. Great price and if you follow the instructions always come out good. While there, be sure to buy some cannoli for dessert! They also offer pizza by the slice and a small selection of hot foods like Lasagna.
