I've had this restaurant on a Must-Try list for a long time, and I finally made the long drive to check it out for a super-late lunch...
This is a sister restaurant to Deejai Noodle Bar in NODA...and now I know that it's smaller and more casual, with a rather dark, murky-looking interior. With Covid raging in NC, I eagerly opted to dine outside on their patio...and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was, with striking black-white flooring and red chairs/tables. Also, loved the fact that there was only 1 other table of diners...so quiet and peaceful!
I could be wrong, but there was just 1 waitress working the whole restaurant when I arrived. Think I spoke with her on the phone (to confirm their lunch hours), where I thought she was quite short with me (but it could just be a language barrier?). In any case, she wasn't at all friendly at first (didn't even bother to greet me when I entered the door, so I actually initiated the greeting lol), but gradually became nicer as the meal progressed. I can't say it was the best service I've had, but it was fine.
Food-wise, I went for their Red Curry with Salmon, which was quite hefty ($20)...with a side order of Spring Rolls, and Thai Iced Tea. The meal included complimentary sides, Rice Soup and Wontons. Not my thing, so I left it untouched, but it was a nice offering.
I've tried this amazing Salmon Noodles dish at their sister restaurant, Deejai Noodle Bar about a year ago, and remembering loving it. Unfortunately, I only moderately liked the Red Curry w/ Salmon here at Deejai Thai. It tasted good, but just nothing more than that. The sauce was rather thin and somewhat mild (surprisingly, the waitress didn't even ask if I wanted it mild or spicy?). Also, I really didn't like any of the veggies (very bulky and largely cut). I didn't even like their Spring Rolls...tasted really odd (??). Same with the Thai Tea. It was barely sweet, and a very small portion, mostly ice at that. So sadly, the meal was quite disappointing. I truly wanted to like this restaurant, but frankly, I just didn't like any of the foods or the drink that I ordered. :( Surprising, because I LOVED the foods at the other sister restaurant in NODA.
Despite my disappointment with the foods I ordered, I will say again how much I loved their patio...Not only attractive, but very comfy as well. On a beautiful day like today, it was a near-perfect patio dining experience. Truly, their patio made up for what would have been a much lower rating.
Thanks to their delightful patio experience, I am definitely open to returning here to try something else on their menu.
