Wizard’s Beer Festival Coming to Boston - Eater Boston

"A sandwich pop-up that had a brief tenure at Everett brewery BearMoose has shifted its plans: Deep Cuts Deli founder Ian McGregor previously planned to open a musician/artist-friendly sandwich shop but now reportedly aims to open a sandwich shop/brewery somewhere in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood. McGregor has teamed up with Jeff Wetzel, a cofounder of BearMoose Brewing who has since left the Everett brewery, and the team (including manager Daniel Hastings) is working to finalize a lease. Once secured, the space could accommodate a three-barrel brewing system, and the business will pursue a full liquor license to serve cocktails and wine, in addition to house beers. Winter Hill is also home to Winter Hill Brewing Company." - Dana Hatic

A Sandwich-Filled Music Venue Could Open in Boston | Eater Boston

"Ian McGregor, a music promoter with restaurant experience, is seeking crowdfunding to open Deep Cuts Deli, a hybrid deli and music venue intended to serve sandwiches by day and function as a sanctuary for artists by night, offering space for practicing and performing without some of the costs often associated with traditional venues and hosting art shows, movie screenings, workshops, and community events. The menu is in development and was taste-tested at a pop-up: sandwich options included Chick Chick Boom, a vegan curried chickpea sandwich on sourdough, and Big Trouble in Little Boston, a roast beef sandwich with kimchi slaw on a ciabatta roll; a side served there was Gallagher’s Lament, a watermelon salad with feta, pickled onions, and mint. McGregor launched an Indiegogo campaign to cover operating costs, the buildout, kitchen equipment, and furniture, and donors can receive rewards such as practice time, a taste-testing party, or — for a $5,000 donation — a sandwich named after themselves; follow Deep Cuts’ social accounts for updates as plans solidify." - Dana Hatic

Deep Cuts Review – A Radical Flashback to the ‘70s & ‘80s! The Queen and I rolled into Deep Cuts last night, and let me tell you—this place is a time warp straight to the glory days of tube TVs, killer pinball action, and cassette tapes! From the moment we walked in, it was like stepping onto the set of a vintage arcade flick, complete with mirrored ceilings, glowing neon, and the sweet, sweet sound of silver balls ricocheting through machines. The pinball arcade was an absolute blast from the past—rows of classic machines lined the walls, including one old-school beauty with an analog scoreboard (none of that digital nonsense here!). The whole vibe was electric, with the click-clack of flippers and the hum of CRT screens setting the mood. Just outside the arcade, we spotted a pristine vintage pinball-style machine that looked like it had been preserved in a 1978 time capsule. When we hit the bar area, the retro love kept coming. Bar-height tables, moody lighting, and a killer selection of drinks displayed on two giant TVs behind the counter. The bartenders were cool cats, serving up drinks with a smile and making us feel right at home. And dig this—they’ve got QR code menus, so you can order like it’s the future while vibing in the past. Genius. Whether you’re a pinball wizard, a vinyl junkie, or just looking for a far-out spot to unwind, Deep Cuts delivers the goods. The Queen and I are already planning our next date night here—because why settle for boring when you can party like it’s 1979? Final Verdict: If you dig good drinks, killer arcade action, and a heavy dose of nostalgia, Deep Cuts is your spot. 10/10 we would flip again!

Came for a show tonight. Really fun space, and great drinks if you're dry! The beet-ade was great :-) Posting this review to praise the bar staff though-- I left the band space and sat on the floor near the bathrooms during the show to tend to a knee condition, and in less than five minutes someone from behind the bar came to check on me. He asked if I felt well, if I needed any help, and then found me a seat when I explained I was okay. It was loud and crowded, so for someone to notice something that could be concerning and to act immediately really goes to show how proactive and aware the staff are, and how seriously they take safety. I didn't get the name of whoever checked on me, but thank you very much! I hope I can return for another show someday. P.S. The pinball area is wicked!

Google
This is the best establishment to open in the Boston area in years. You get a super intimate concert setting with a brewery, record store, and pinball arcade all in one. Best of all, they don't use Ticketmaster so you are getting very fair pricing on all of their shows. Even if you have mild or passing interest in a music artist playing here, I'd encourage everyone to just go. You will almost certainly have a great time!

Google
Such a cool business. We tried several sandwiches (sooo delicious), played some pinball, and watched a few shows. They had a variety of brews and we enjoyed several. Will definitely return!

Google
I always enjoy visiting and supporting local businesses. Seeing "vinyl" in the name of an establishment gave me high hopes for a large record selection. Upon visiting, I found VINYL.INDEX to be a multi-faceted place: a small pinball arcade, a limited record selection, an eatery. It took me about 45 minutes to dig through all the vinyl. I did find a few gems, particularly in the $5 and $1 bins. However, since there was no record player available to test purchases, I had to trust that the records would play well and that the business would stand behind their quality. Unfortunately, when I got home and discovered an issue with a record, I was told over the phone that all sales are final because the items are used. While I appreciate finding some great used records, the lack of a test station is a significant drawback. I strongly suggest vinyl index add a record player for customers to test vinyl before purchasing. It would give buyers confidence and likely reduce post-purchase issues.

Google
Love this bar, but the last 4 times we have tried to go there we couldn't get in because it was closed for a private party. We also didn't go in in the past because it was a high cover to get in, because of the bands, even though we only wanted to go into the bar. Bottom line do not go here and expect to get in. Always have a back up Bar to go to, if you plan to go here, because most of the time you can't go in.

Deep Cuts is an institution in Medford and a shining hub of local and touring musicians. Their friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere have hosted many great nights for the few years they have been in town. The food is hearty and satisfying. The beer is creative and quirky. The games keep everyone occupied, as well as Pop's pinball hall. Legendary bands have made their way across the country to play here, and local bands can flourish in a supportive environment, with great sound! Many festivals and art pop ups have been hosted at Deep Cuts, and are always a joy. A thriving venue in the community!! Highly recommend stopping in!

Google
Love the staff. Love the food. Love the atmosphere. Deep Cuts is my fav spot in town. I've gone for shows, I've gone when shows were happening, I've gone for events (my Bonsai is still thriving) and I've gone just to go. Food: Never been disappointed in what I have ordered. I love the smash burgers. The roast beef was delectable. The wings are exactly what I want a buffalo chicken wing to be. Service: Love the bartenders. Super personable and fun to chat with. During busy events they are amicable and do their best to tend to everyone. Atmosphere: Its a cool punk bar with pinball and records. There is always good music going. Highly recommend stopping in. On your way out make sure to get a shot of chilled fernet.

Yelp
Ordered the kids turkey sandwich to go and it was SO GOOD!!! Thick, full of turkey, delicious delicious delicious. The size was great, definitely big enough for mom or dad to have a bite (or 6). Can't wait to try the grown up sandos too! The arcade next door has lots of fun vintage pinball machines.

Yelp
Grub, Music, More Grub So amazing with an alternating food menu. Always have different beers/drinks and a wide verity of games to play to maintain high entertainment. Love the vibes here AND keep your ears out for their latest show, we saw a comedy show here and would go back again!

David M.

Yelp
This place is a necessity for Medford Square! I love how there's always something going on here and the pinball parlor is awesome. There's also board games you can play at the bar. Knocking off a star because I wish they had more drink/cocktail options. As someone who can't drink beer, it'd be appreciated. Overall, it's a solid place. It has drinks, foods, and entertainment!

Yelp
Pinball up the wazzoo, cool shows from local bands like Everfiner, and really good homemade ice tea and lemonade. I love getting an Arnold Palmer when I'm out there ( I don't really drink alcohol casually and I don't want a sugary soda or a $7 mocktail). The staff are mature and work together well, I always feel comfortable there and I feel like there's always 2 people working the bar. Honestly this place makes for a good hang. Play games. Browse records. Gaze at cars passing by the square. Look at the ceiling in the pinball Hall ( officially Pop's 2) and see yourself from a different perspective. Get some food made fresh from the kitchen. Then put earplugs on and go into the rock show. Or rent the whole place out for an event. I've seen comedy here too, Grace Kuhlenschmidt came through which was crazy because she's actually going to be famous.

Yelp
Food was great. Came out hot and promptly. Came in at 5 on a Saturday and got very busy right after arriving. I got the Arizona chicken. Right amount of heat and fresh roll. Hubby got bacon smashed burger - also great. Fries were crispy and warm. Had MVP on tap. Wonderful hoppy with grapefruit overtones. Staff was friendly and very responsive. Nice dinner for an out of town couple. Caution seats can be an issue once it gets busy.

Yelp
Love the overall concept, ambiance, and service. Turkey avocado sandwich and beer were just ok (beer outrageously overpriced).

Yelp
This was the yummiest vegan "meatball" and cheese sub I have ever had! I ordered take out with a side of fries (delicious) and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Stopped in last night for the first time with my son and his fiancée. We had the Big Dipper appetizer, Members only, steak and cheese & smash patty sandwiches. Everything was absolutely delicious! Great beer selection and equally great service. I wish I had thought to catch our bartender\server name, he was wonderful. Whoever was working the bar 8/16/23 thanks for a wonderful experience. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere - bar with a bunch of beers brewed in house, sandwiches (I had the wings which were really fantastic, and I say that as someone who lived in Buffalo for a while). Friends enjoyed their sandwiches - vegan and meat options alike. There's a small record shop in the corner and an arcade with pinball machines. Turns into a venue at night, have seen a handful of indie/punk shows - great venue!

Tobias K.

Yelp
Confusing online ordering system that expects us to pay a tip before receiving the food.

Yelp
Great food and music venue combined. Real community feel. Medford desperately needed a place like deep cuts.

Yelp
Went to Deep Cuts for a concert in the late spring of 2023. It was their proper opening. A decent variety of beer and 'za and Sammies. Only complaint the show was ridiculously loud. I might a set of hearing aids in my 30s

JJ G.

Yelp
I love seeing music here. The size and shape of the room is perfect. Basic. Nothing blocking the view. I love small venues and this one is seriously excellent! Check out what's coming up and go see a show, just be sure to go early and eat cuz the foods good, too!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place, record store, sandwich shop, brewery, music venue. We stopped by for lunch, parking can be tough but if you ride around a bit maybe you can find a metered spot. I had a turkey reuben, my wife had an insane chicken pesto sandwich. Both were excellent. Beer was okay. Service was good. Go here for the sandwiches, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Deep Cuts is a solid deli that I have every intention of ordering from as part of my rotation of "I don't want to cook" takeout. The Cuban sandwich on ciabatta is a good, sturdy version with solid bread, good proportion of ingredients and a lot of flavors. I also had a bite of the chicken pesto that could've maybe used a bit more salt and pepper but was otherwise tasty and fresh. The potato salad and pickles were great, and we had ordered the pasta salad as well, but got coleslaw by mistake. The slaw was very vinegar'y, and I wasn't in the mood for it. Overall, good place and I look forward to working through the menu.

David K.

Yelp
Absolutely a great experience! Friendly bartenders, great food, and great in-house brewed beer!! Got to meet the owner Jeff! Super down to earth and great to talk! Just canned up their first Deep Cuts Beer cans! Selling in-house if you don't have time to sit down and hang definitely take a 4-pack of tall bois to go!

Bill M.

Yelp
Great service, nice selection of drinks (and vinyl). Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Yelp
Went to Deep Cuts on Friday Nov 15th to see Hallelujah the Hills. The band was great. Outstanding performance. The service on the other hand was horrible and I will never return. I got there around 7 o'clock. The place wasn't overly packed but there was only one seat at the bar which was all the way to the left next to where you ororder food. Placed in front of me was a napkin and straw holder. As I was sitting enjoying my drink 2 people within a matter of 5 minutes reached over my head, elbowed me in the head TWICE while reaching for napkins. Annoyed as anyone would be, I moved the napkin holder 6 inches as so I would not be in striking distance of any more elbows. After I had moved the napkin dispenser 6 inches. One of the bartenders, (male, beard, hat, hippy braceletss, white shirt, the taller of the 2 make bartenders) stares me down looking angr6 like he wants to fight me. I say "I was just hit in the head, people are reaching over me". His response "Oh...well thats where it goes". While staring me down and moves it directly back in front of me so the next person reaching for a napkin could elbow me. Whoever that bartender is, is immature and and clearly doesn't care or protect the customers of the establishment. Instead of an apology, guy tries to get tough. That's now how you treat customers. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Also the burger, very mediocre. Not worth the price. Only 1 beer canned for takeout. Will never go to this place again and will bash it every opportunity I get.
google avatar

Yelp
I bought a chicken sandwich yesterday at Deep Cuts I never received. I stopped by on my return commute around noon today (they open 11am) and they were locked closed. I can't speak to the music or drinks, but as a deli on a bus hub, it's a miss - slow and unreliable.
google avatar

Mark O.

Yelp
Rules hard. Great beer list, friendly bartenders, and has a good amount of hustle and bustle to it. My steak and cheese was fantastic. A very welcome addition to Medford Square and an oasis for people coming up to see a show at the theatre. Great job!

Michael C.

Yelp
Ordered the Cuban for lunch, delicious! Flavorful with a nice little kick and perfect crunch to the toast. Great service ... Can't wait to see go back to catch a show!

Yelp
We are new to the area and felt like a deli sandwich we googled spots and this popped up Very good food highly recommend

Yelp
A hidden gem in west Medford! The menu is to the point - sandwiches, cold or hot plus a few extra surprises. My boyfriend and I got a couple of hot pressed sandwiches on a Friday night, he got the Catania Supreme (not pictured) and I got the Cuban (pictured). My boyfriend swears by this sandwich and says it's one of the best he's ever had and always raves about the service at the restaurant. I was blown away by my Cuban, perfect bread to insides ratio, something that I always judge a sandwich on. The Mac was tangy and salty from the crispy onions, a lovely touch. The pretzel was a pretzel, neither spectacular nor bad but the mustard was definitely the star of that show. I definitely want to try some of their other offerings!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
This is based on a delivery from Grubhub. Pretzel: Honestly this is the primary reason why it's short a star. The pretzel was more like bread, but it wasn't like pretzel bread. It was an Everything Pretzel that needed salt. That's why I like hot pretzels, the salt. 1 star. Steak & Cheese: Good Bread, pretty good steak. Enough cheese and grease to make the bread matter even more. I added pickles and was not a fan of their pickles, but my addition is my fault, not theirs. A little small for the price but overall a good sandwich. Mac&Cheese: Fried Onions on top with beer cheese. This was probably the best thing I ordered. It was very flavorful. There was a good tang of the cheese and I wound up letting it sit for a bit where the beer cheese that they make it with congealed very slightly like any good cream sauce, causing the last bite to have even more of a burst of flavor. I'd grind the fried onions a bit more, however they should consider an entrée version of this instead of a side (though keep it also as a side because for some people it hits just right for the price). I requested utensils and they didn't waste plastic by giving me a knife/fork/spoon combination. They gave me what I needed, 1 fork. I wouldn't hesitate to order again. I'd skip the pretzel. I'm personally not a fan of their pickling process for their pickles but I know people who would love it (it's a bit too sweet for me).

Kathy R.

Yelp
Food is good but they are adding an automatic 20% gratuity to every order, whether you eat there, do in person take-out, or an online online order.
google avatar

Gwendolyn B.

Yelp
Love that this local deli also has *multiple* vegan options! The Banzo is a delicious vegan take on a meatball sub & I love the "not your grandpa's Reuben" made with thin slices of beets! The actual space is small but super clean & very hip.

Adam B.

Yelp
Everyone is talking about the sandwiches. I would love to try, but I am hooked on the pizza. This place has by far the best pizza I have had in a very long time. It is outstanding. It tastes like they make their own sauce and dough. The sauce has a very prevalent taste of garlic, the cheese does not taste processed, and the dough is like fluffy but crispy at the same time. I tried the plain cheese, and a special BBQ slice and I am still thinking about it 4 days later. Trust me, the value is also insane. $3 for a cheese slice that will fill you up quickly and tastes amazing. 5 Stars all day everyday.

John K.

Yelp
Drove up from RI for the Daikaiju/Eight Foot Manchild/Matt Heaton & the Electric Heaters show on a Wednesday night 4/24/24 and had a most excellent time. Surprisingly parking was not a problem as there is a decent amount of free public parking after 6:00 in the lot behind Citizens Bank across the street (this is Medford after all ). The performance room looked like it could hold a couple of hundred comfortably (standing only no seats) while there was an adjacent bar room with a good sized bar and several tables. Deep Cuts is also a micro-brewery which offers about a dozen selections; the Brown Ale and Cream Ale I purchased were solid. Unisex bathrooms were pristine. I could write a separate review on the bands - the openers were locals from Medford, and Daikaiju are a national touring band from ??? specializing in surf/metal with an emphasis on audience participation, to say the least. It was the most fun I've had on a Wednesday night in ages. As someone more famous than me once said, "I'll be back..."
google avatar

Kendall M.

Yelp
Now I'm usually a cold Turkey, cheddar, lettuce, no mayo sub type of girl but I got the Raising Arizona hot sub which has house Turkey, pickles, cheddar, chipotle aioli I think and when I tell you that sandwich slapped - girl it DID. The flavors, the mouthfeel, it was just a perfect sandwich! Seriously so good. I also got pulled in to getting the bagged ginger lemon iced tea (literally only because it was in a bag, like an adult capri sun) and it was delicious as well, not like sweet water with tea essence you know? Real FLAVOR. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
So happy this place exists! I stumbled upon in by accident and was so glad I did. It's rare for a deli to have vegetarian options, but Deep Cuts' are plentiful and tasty. I've had the vegan reuben and the banzo (veg meatball sub) so far, and both were excellent. The staff was also super friendly. I can't wait to go back to try more!
google avatar

S J.

Yelp
Love seeing a local business serving vegetarian and vegan options as well as dank meats. I like their hot sandwiches most.

Pat M.

Yelp
Unique sandwiches made with quality ingredients. Great online ordering system and super friendly staff. I deducted a star for two reasons: the sandwiches are on the smaller side and they're no longer open during dinner hours. I always feel like I need two of whatever I order. I wish they would add a larger size option, and I hope ownership takes me wanting more as a compliment. They were initially open for dinner but now they close everyday at 4pm. It's not uncommon for a new business to tweak and experiment with their hours but I just wish they asked me first. I promise you steady business if you can just hang tight for a few more hours each night. The turkey Rueben is damn good.
google avatar

Lesley J.

Yelp
I've been wanting an excuse to eat from here. Today did not disappoint. I ordered the turkey reuben (I love rachels) and the vegan pasta salad. Both were excellent and filling. What makes this place special in my mind is that they are vegan inclusive and all the flavors are there. For example, the pasta salad is made without mayo but with a lot of flavor so for those of you who aren't vegan but love mayo, you shouldn't miss it. Don't get me wrong, it's different without mayo but if you also love flavor, it's on point with that and the texture, loaded w/ veggies and some pepper for a little kick. Both items were very fresh as well. Looking forward to trying some other items. Photo's to come.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Whoever conceptualized the Greek and Destroy wrap is an actual genius. Thank you from a tired teacher-mom looking for something satisfying to power her through Friday afternoon.

RaeLeee M.

Yelp
Their steak and cheese is TO DIE FOR..... i went there for the first time and the owners friend was so nice. If you like steak and cheese this is the only steak and cheese in the area that gets 1000+ stars!

Mike R.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. Is a little expensive, def worth it for the quality of food. Had raising Arizona and I think it was rodeo steak and cheese. Was very happy with both but steak and cheese was incredible.

Mary H.

Yelp
SO FANTASTIC!!! I think I ordered one of everything on the menu and each thing was better than the one before it! absolutely don't skip this place, the peeps working were so lovely and kind, wish I lived closer but psyched to have a reason to go for a drive! (and get the iced tea which was bonkers good!!!)
