Where to Eat and Drink in Salida and Buena Vista | Eater Denver

"Though Deerhammer’s spirits can be found at many of the bars in this region, a trip to the distillery is worth it on B.V.’s Main Street. Drinkers can taste the award-winning single malt whiskey or Dutch style gin while grabbing a bite from the Buena Viking food truck." - Josie Sexton

Where to Stop on a Tour of Colorado Distilleries | Eater Denver

"A drive down Highway 285 is always worth the stop in Buena Vista. Deerhammer can be found on the town’s main drag with a cozy taproom pouring award-winning single malt whiskey and a dutch-style gin, among other spirits." - Josie Sexton

Just from what I know about this place I'm a fan. And I don't really know that much about single malt but I hear that's they are known for their American Single Malt. As a rule I'm not a fan of scotch but I truly enjoyed theirs, no peat which is perfect. I have seen their stuff and not been interested. But saw the "Colorado Whisky" on Tubi featured Deerhammer. The story is awesome and what the history and heritage behind every successful distiller, it's about doing something unique. And that's just about the whiskey. The facility is small with a nice place to hang out and do the tastings. Don't try the fish and chips but they looked amazing. I'm a fan

Google
Are you someone who hears the word "tour" and gets bored? Well, don't sleep on this place. They have a sipping room that you can enjoy whenever, but I would recommend adding on the tour to the pre-whatever you have planned on Main Street. Make a reservation and get your afternoon/evening started an hour earlier. So, first of all, HUGE shout out to Tammy, our tour leader. She was welcoming, informative, and...fun. It is a pretty cool back story too. LOVE their logo. You can tell Tammy was a teacher in a past life, as her explanations of everything you are learning is very much on point. And you DO learn a lot of stuff. She welcomes questions, and I had a lot of them. You also get to sample the product, and the product is GOOD. You might even think in your mind that you don't like whiskey, but don't let that stop you. They have so many KINDS of whiskey that Tammy or whoever will find one you like. They say this very well on their website. "Our distilling is steeped in whiskey tradition, but our methods are infused with curiosity and creativity." Perfectly said. Curiosity and creativity. I think they might pause the tours during the winter, but here is your first great idea for when they come back. To review, make plans on Main Street, reserve a tour, do the tour before your magical other plans, and then take on Buena Vista in a great mood. Tammy, thanks again! Definitely recommend, and see you there next year!

Google
This is a nice small distillery to sit and enjoy some of there bourbons. Nice atmosphere, quiet, and some outdoor seating. Recommend the 4 grain bourbon. Had a nice flavor profile. Stop in when visiting Buena Vista. The staff was real friendly and helpful.

Google
Was able to enjoy some beverages on the patio with the family. Drinks were really good, staff was very friendly, and the food from the food truck was tasty. The patio was very accommodating for our two small children and two dogs. Worth a stop in BV if you are into whiskey style drinks.

Google
I’ve been to this distillery five times and always had a great experience—until now. I came in with my trained service dog and was told “no dogs allowed inside” by a staff member, despite explaining he is a service animal and offering to show documentation. I was made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. On top of that, the drink I was served was unusually weak and disappointing, and believe the short pour was intentional. I hope management reviews ADA compliance with their team. Not all disabilities are visible, and service dogs don’t always wear vests. This experience was upsetting, especially after so many positive visits. I want to bring awareness about this to those who may have less visible disabilities and travel with support animals.

Google
Five stars doesn’t cut it. As a born-and-raised Kentucky boy, I’ve had my fair share of great whiskey — and Deerhammer absolutely blew me away. Tanner was a phenomenal bartender: knowledgeable, engaging, and just straight-up fun to talk whiskey with. And Lenny, the master distiller? The man’s a legend. Passionate, sharp, and seriously cool — you can tell he pours his soul into what he makes. They didn’t just serve me a flight; they made me feel like part of the crew. Can’t wait to come back. This place rocks!

Google
Epic wisky, good food. Fun, games & outdoor seating. Order your food and drink when the pager goes off your meal is ready. Had the burbon burger with fries and cheese curds. Moscow mules were very tasty and strong!!!

Google
Hands down the best spirits in Colorado. They also have a great tasting room, great patio, great tours and the owners are local and pretty much kick ass. Highly Recommended!

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips, much better than GB's in Denver, which I also love and respect. Also got a Whiskey sour and enjoyed it to the last drop. Would eat here again immediately.

Yelp
I had the fish and chips. Food was tasty! The signature whisky sour was good. Service was friendly. Great atmosphere!

Yelp
It's been quite awhile since we have been here (pre-Covid) - but excited we stopped in today. There's a large open area (and opening in what used to be the wall to get there). There's a food truck with an assortment of burgers, wings, cheese curds, fries and other specials (today's specials were cheese fries and potstickers). We ordered the shroom burger, cheese curds and the bourbon bacon bbq burger. I also ordered an old fashioned (always a favorite and they have different versions/flavors). The food came out pretty quickly once we ordered and was delicious - the mushrooms on my burger were plentiful and nicely cooked/seasoned. The cheese curds were delightful friend cheesy goodness and came with sriracha and ranch for dipping. Looking forward to coming back again when driving through Buena vista!

Malorie S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in BV! The staff is always friendly and super welcoming! The drinks are delicious and I always enjoy when they come up with a new seasonal beverage! They have their own food truck and the food is pretty great, especially the fish and chips!
google avatar

Yelp
Always delicious and a great place to relax with friends and a cold drink in hand. I tried a peach slushie mule and was a bit apprehensive about my choice, since I typically don't branch out. I'm happy to report that it was delicious, refreshing, and not too sweet. Perfect post-ride drink.

Yelp
We stopped in Buena Vista on the way out to Creede. Deerhammer peaked our interest - I mean whiskey and a killer food truck? Say no more. The food was a surprising highlight for us, both burger and cauliflower wings exceeded expectations. We were MOST impressed by the creese curds, presented lightly breaded and fried in cubes. The whiskey left us wanting more, and while we were offered a coupon to go home with a bottle, we passed. Next time we'll try the cocktails on tap.
google avatar

Gus L.

Yelp
Deerhammer is a great little place in the center of BV's downtown area. The whiskey was ok, the cocktails were good, the cheese fries hit the spot after a few drinks, and the vibes were awesome. The servers were friendly and helpful. Catch them on a day with live music and you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

john H.

Yelp
Outstanding burgers and fries. Fast service, nice ambiance. We will be back to try the other items on the menu
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
Take the tour! Super knowledgeable about their alcohols and practices and their whiskeys are yummy! Space is warm and enjoyable. The food is served by food truck and is pretty good
google avatar

Gerardo V.

Yelp
Cool little spot! Enjoyed some flights as well as a couple of old fashioneds. Cheese curds were also great!

Yelp
Oh man, I wish we lived closed to Deerhammer! We'd be regulars. A fantastic selection of spirits and cocktails to choose from, super friendly staff, and a top notch area to sit and enjoy while you sip. We just ran out of the bottle we purchased so will probably need to make a return trip soon...

Tammy B.

Yelp
I have been in BV for only two weeks and love Deerhammer Distillary. First off, I have never had American single malt whiskey but am now a huge fan. Their fries are amazing, and my husband and I love the fish and chips! Finally, I had an amazing tour and tasting with Steve and bought a specialty single barrel malt whiskey distilled especially for the local liquor store! Great experience!
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
So glad we found Deerhammer instead of the other place we were looking for initially! The drinks were made well. The food came out of a trailer as their kitchen. I know, but...DO NOT let that throw you. The burgers were outstanding. The ingredients were great and the Buffalo fries were the BEST! This was more than eating good food. The flavors were bold and exciting. It was an experience all to itself.

Yelp
Would rate this place negative if I could. Used to love taking my friends here when we would go out of town, then I brought my dog. My dog barked a handful of times and the owner kicked us out telling me we were "ruining the vibe". Don't be a "dog friendly" establishment if you're going to be rude for dogs being dogs. They also love over serving parents and letting toddlers run around and scream unsupervised, god forbid a dog barks a few times. The owner is some rude, blonde, middle aged lady who just appears to be unhappy with life. Would never spend a cent here, just trash. If you don't believe me, just read the negative reviews and the comments she's left. This lady owns and runs a business but talks to patrons like they're absolute trash! -100000/10

Scout G.

Yelp
says dog friendly but kick you out if your dog barks a couple times. Blonde bar tender is very rude and unprofessional. check google reviews to see that this a common issue while she nastily replies to those giving their honest opinion.

Yelp
Reserved a tour online this past week which we attended today. What a blast! It's a small distillery with a great product ... all of them. Tour includes tastings and explanations of how each were prepared, the types of grains utilized, etc. Finished up by bringing home several bottles (one will be an awesome gift, the rest for us!) and enjoying lunch at the establishment on their patio. Both the wings and burger we ordered were prepared as requested. We seriously had a great time!
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
The line is worth it. Excellent drinks.we ordered food from the burger wagon and sipped drinks while waiting for our burgers to arrive. Seems like most people know each other or are out of towners on holiday. Enjoy!

Yelp
With the extra time I now have due to covid, I thought I'd spend it reviewing some of the great places I've been. I visited Deerhammer last summer during a "14er" project where we featured 14ers, and of course, distilleries! This one always stood out as one of the best. The tasting room has a great atmosphere for sure, the patio is where it's at! There is nothing like sitting on a big patio in the warm Colorado sun with a glass of whiskey. The food truck ain't too bad either. Also, Deerhammer is in the Colorado Spirits Trail book so I recommend picking one of those up. Here's a link to my visit: https://youtu.be/pW5BcAvbFpE When the world opens up again after the pandemic - make sure this is one of the first places you visit.

Yelp
Great service- we had old fashioned (pretty typical), a gin cocktail with pineapple juice (my favorite) and the rum green grind (unexpected flavor combo and very yummy) the food is outstanding from that great food truck! I need to get the name but great fir fries, wings, burgers, etc. year round! Atmosphere is very casual and relaxing- -
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Enjoyed a whiskey flight- really enjoyed the different flavor profiles. My husband had their Manhattan I had the Wisconsin old fashioned. If you know Wisconsin style old fashioned this was one of the better- they do not use soda pop on it it's a standard old fashioned recipe with brandy rather than whiskey/bourbon. Good food- if you have kiddos it is a good place for lunch. Welcoming and cozy- very nice staff.
google avatar

Bryan B.

Yelp
Delicious burgers and mixed drinks - open good hours - friendly staff. Chill atmosphere - we had our teenaged with us and they loved the place. You can order food and the food truck is right outside - order drinks from the distillery - we loved the silver gin fizz! The fries were amazing and crispy. We didn't try the wings but I was a bit jealous when I saw someone pick them up.
google avatar

Kevin N.

Yelp
Disco Sour was out of this world! This place is perfect. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The alcohol is amazing. They even have a great burger and tater tot food truck outside. If you're in town definitely give this place a try!
google avatar

Ali L.

Yelp
Small town charm, big city talent. These guys really know how to make a spirit! We sampled quite a few of the liquors on the menu and the bourbon was outstanding. The weather was warm so we enjoyed our drinks on the large dog-friendly patio. 100% will return the next time we're in town!
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
We popped in for a quick hot dog lunch and This spot did not disappoint. Inside of the distillery you can order from there quick and easy hotdog menu as well as their extensive list of homemade distilled specials. We weren't quite ready to hit the liquor so we stuck to their seltzer waters but it was quick and it was tasty. If you're looking for a fast and affordable bite this is your spot.
google avatar

Themod M.

Yelp
Visisted here from Arizona. I had their smashed burger, it was delicious. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Adam P.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in BV to visit! Not only do they craft some of the world's finest spirits they also make some of the best cocktails around. Couple that with an amazing outdoor seating area and a neighboring food truck and you've got a 5 star experience. I always enjoy a simple single malt old fashioned and leave with a bottle of Whiskey and Gin, at the very least. ~Enjoy!

Laurie D.

Yelp
Phenomenal restaurant and distillery! If you're in Buena Vista, you must try this place. We love it! And the cheese curds are to die for!
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
I would give this place a 5 on drinks and a 2 on food. The drinks and bartenders are phenomenal! If they had legit food, or even plated what they have better, it would be so much better. The drinks were beyond amazing, so if you just want to drink, this is the place. We would have stayed longer if we weren't so hungry
google avatar

Ally K.

Yelp
Visit here!! For their drinks. Its definitely worth doing a tasting and it's enough for 2 to share. The cocktails are yummy, but my suggestion is to skip the snacks they offer and grab food from the food truck that shares a patio with the distillery. The line was a bit long but the burgers and sweet potatoe fries looked amazing!
google avatar

Hillary K.

Yelp
This distillery is a must visit if you're in Buena Vista. I just recently visited for the second time, and it is amazing how much they've grown their beverage selection in the last year. They are in a small building right next to the Buena Viking Food Truck with just a few small tables inside. However, their cocktails pack a big punch. Whether you're looking for a classic old fashioned (they have 4 different kinds) or a funky spin on a mule or sidecar, this place has it all! You should definitely check it out!

Cindy L.

Yelp
The burgers were delicious and lots of seating outside including heated patio for you and pups! The whiskey is great and good vibes all around.
google avatar

Heather V.

Yelp
It's pretty neat to see how different food & beverage companies are coping during these 'new' but still 'weird' times and Deerhammer is no different. We took a day trip to Buena Vista and it was almost impossible not to notice this distillery walking throughout town. Their outdoor seating is spacious and definitely practicing social distancing. Since I've never visited Deerhammer pre COVID, I can only speak on my experience this particular day. They have a menu written on a board outside a window which is where you place your order. It's a whiskey and bourbon distillery so if you're looking for the clear stuff, this isn't for you. Start with a flight or dive right into their many old fashions. Plan ahead as they don't sell food. I also didn't see the food truck the other yelpers mentioned but it could be I didn't look good enough, so don't take my word for it. Also no indoor restrooms but they do have three portable porta potty's towards the alley, a hand washing station, and water station. Each picnic table also has its own hand sanitizer. While I know this isn't the ideal atmosphere, kudos to the Team at Deerhammer for creating a safe space to feel 'normal'.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
My wife and I did the tour which was decent, think it would have been better if a distiller had conducted it, instead of a person without first hand knowledge. We did get to sample all the various Whiskey products, get to keep the sample glass, and got $10.00 of a bottle. In the end it was worth more than he cost of the tour, but if you are a novice to Bourbon, you may want more details on the process.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place to stop after a hike. Chicago dog yummy, veggie dog just okay. Fabulous drinks - margarita and mule madness. Chili was THE best.

Yelp
Making spirits bright, am I right?! Was in BV for a show and had some time to check out Deerhammer (and use my Mountain Passport for buy one/get one drinks!). This distillery is exactly what you want--super cozy and full of good people and great cocktails. Bellied up to the bar with a couple friends and we were immediately greeted by a friendly and helpful bartender. This is a tiny-but-mighty operation, so everyone you see working there is really knowledgeable about the whiskey. The Passport deal was a BOGO barrel aged cocktail--these are kept in mini oak barrels behind the bar and there are three options. I had the barrel-aged smoked corn whiskey old fashioned and oh my my! This thing was strong, delicious, and perfect for a chilly night. The distilling happens right behind the bar which was cool to see. All of their products are for sale in the distillery, including an American single malt, port cask finish single malt, bourbon, rye, and gin. Come on in and get cozy!

Yelp
Stumbled into Buena Vista (that's "Byoona Vista, tenderfoot) one evening for dinner and libations. If ya never been, "BV" is a cute little mountain town with a nice mix of counterculture and Colorado cowboy, and has a very friendly and walkable downtown. And it was while we were strolling that we happened upon Deerhammer Distillery. It's a small place inside, with four barstools and a couple of tables inside, and a big patio outside that they share with the Buena Viking food truck. Now it's a distillery, so the make their own hooch-bourbon, corn whiskey, single malt, vodka and gin. They have an extensive set of mixed creations using their booze, with several drinks I've rarely seen on menus (like a delicious gin based cocktail called a Sawyer), and three barreled choices. Friendly staff will greet you and guide you through the menu to assist you with picking the right drink for your taste or mood. Talented barkeeps mix beautifully curated concoctions! My only regret is that it was late and I couldn't drink more than one--why don't you do me a favor and hit up Deerhammer and have that second one for me!?!? I will definitely retu

Yelp
Amy was awesome!! We were just passing by after working in salida, and Enroute back to Cali. She did more than take care of us! I have always been a fan of their bourbon and whiskey, because I live in Breck in the winter. However, it is nearly impossible to find in Cali! So thank you for stocking me up! I appreciate your hospitality!
google avatar

Jeni A.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite whiskey. The bartenders were incredible - friendly, knowledgeable, passionate and just incredible service all around. Would definitely recommend a tour or stopping in for a tasting or cocktail.

Jared A.

Yelp
Fantastic, top shelf, craft as fuck! Staff was knowledgeable with glowing faces. A must when visiting BV.
google avatar

Bricelyn J.

Yelp
Today was pretty cold but they have an outdoor patio with fire pits which are much warmer than heaters. We really enjoyed our hot toddy's next to the fire!

David T.

Yelp
Amazing whiskey, great experience, and awesome staff. I've been going here for years and they only get better every year. Recommended place to stop by and try their whiskey!
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
This is our second time stopping here. Last year around this time we were on our way to Mt Princeton Hot Springs (highly recommend also). We just saw a sign for a distillery and popped in right in time for a tour. The tour was nice and the cocktails were great! Now this is our second time visiting-specifically for the distillery and Eddyline Brewery!

Taylor A.

Yelp
Need to update their hours on Thursdays on their door and on here. Went out of our way to come here and they closed early.

Yelp
Strolled into town while staying the weekend in BV, and was damn happy I did! When we walked in we were immediately greeted by a super friendly bartender. He gave us the low down and hooked us up with menus -- which are vast, full of specialty whiskey and gin cocktails. I opted for the whiskey sour and later a Manhattan, both which really hit the spot. Also had the benefit of trying sips of the classic old fashion, hickory smoked old fashioned, hot toddy, BV's knees, and don't have a single poor thing to say of any one of them. For a gin drinker, I very much recommend the BV's knees. The fresh botanicals infused in the gin really pop and create a special merriment with the rhubarb bitters. The hot toddy was delicious and festive for the chilly evening! Being as stoked as I was about the cocktails, I really wanted a tour of the process, which the bartender gladly offered. He walked us through every step and was incredibly passionate about his work. I learned more about whiskey... and gin... than I ever thought possible and even got to see a mule deer getting hammered off scraps of mash in the back of the building. After the tour, we had the pleasure of enjoying gypsy folk duo, Rama Ransom. The music was great and tied together the atmosphere, making for a truly wonderful evening. And to put the cherry on top of the Manhattan, we got a few bottles to take back to the city with us... and was given a complimentary Deerhammer hat just for buying straight from the source.

Yelp
Deerhammer Distilling Company is such a gem in Buena Vista! Even though the bar area is cozy, the staff is super attentive, quick, and oh so helpful if you have questions on the choosing the right cocktail. The bartender (not sure his name but he has been there the last 3 times we have visited....) is so very cordial and talks to all who enter and choose to sit front and center. On a prior visit we were talking about the gin and while my girl doesn't usually like gin because of its juniper flavors, she thoroughly enjoyed Deerhammer's as it has a smooth, crisp flavor. Their whiskeys....superb. When in town, do yourself a favor and drop in. Be sure to try one of their many cocktails listed on their chalkboard, or just sample some of their fine whiskeys. Either way you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Frederic R.

Yelp
Great drinks and the patio is open during this crazy time (COVID). Also good music playing and not too loud or too soft. Make us forget we need a mask :). Give it a try.
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
We stopped in for cocktails, and were not disappointed. They were well worth the price tag. Bartender was an expert at carefully crafting our drinks and was quite friendly. Would definitely come back. I would recommend the green grind, or the mojito, both were top notch!

Mackenzie J.

Yelp
This distillery is a MUST! Not only is the whiskey + cocktails phenomenal, the staff is so friendly and welcoming. The ambiance is so sweet. Stop by the the old fashion!!

Yelp
Up front , we love Deerhammer , I would recommend their whisky to anyone ( adults only ) and I already have . Where do I start ? the location is nicely nestled in a rustic spot in Buena Vista half way down the main street . The first time we visited , we had occasion to chat with the owner / owners wife and we got the run-down and a great story . Its a small cosy tasting room with a beautiful bar arrangement that open out into the distillery so from your lofty perch at the bar you can see where the golden grain is made ... perfect. The original whisky is nice and tasty , for those who don't usually try whisky . The Bourbon is a nice deep bitey bourbon and the American single malt is a delight by itself and great with Cocktails. They can make you a great whisky sour or other signature cocktail and are very knowledgable about the tasting notes . If you are going to visit B.V. you have to visit Deerhammer . "Loadsa"Character and great drinks .

Yelp
Good whiskey, really enjoyed the flight. Highly recommend grabbing some whiskey then grab a burger right outside.
