Deering Estate

This is a special place that I almost don't want to write about because it won't be a secret. If you have a chance, sign up for their sunrise events, which take place about 6 times a year. If you are lucky, you will see an amazing sunrise in an incredible setting. There will be plenty of wildlife there for people who like birds. Yes, sunrise means getting up early and paying in advance. Join their club to get notifications for when this event happens. I took several sunrise picture before, during and after that I shared below. This is definitely one of the better parks in Miami-Dade County.

Deering Estate is an amazing piece of property started by Charles. It is quiet and peaceful and if you go now you may get to see Manatees, the people who work there are super nice and we happened to get luck and meet their amazing collection of reptiles thanks to Elias/Elijah/Isias not sure how to spell his name. Unfortunately the stone house is under renovation but don’t let that stop you from visiting. There is all sorts of wildlife and just tons to do. I believe a Ruth was at the ticket booth and she gave us great recommendations. Please go to this beautiful estate. Learn about the amazing Charles Deering, those that have maintained his dream, and about some history.

Been craving an experience like this. The staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions to better enjoy the visit and engage the visitors in the history of the State. The stone house was under repair and closed for visits, but still the rest of the state was beautiful and well maintained. This could be a good day long picnic family activity choice for those Saturdays that you aren’t sure what to do. Hope to visit again for their famous ghost tours during September- October, 7:30 pm - 9:30pm. Came in with a Museum Pass from Miami Dade Public Library, check it out for budget friendly visit.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Each room had a different theme. We were a little disappointed that the man house is being repaired and is off limits. But it's very nice!

Went for the Antique Car show. It's a lovely place to relax and enjoy nature. There are areas being renovated which will only make it better. Nice way to spend an afternoon.

A Worthwhile Escape from the Noise of the City! As a self-proclaimed museum lover, I made the trip all the way from Miami just to spend the day at Deering Estate — and it was absolutely worth it. The property is stunning. Walking through the grand dance hall genuinely felt like stepping into a scene from Anastasia. And if you’re up for a little adventure (and not too squeamish about spiders), the nature trails are a must — peaceful, lush, and full of hidden beauty. Pro tip: Don’t make the same mistake I did — bring your own refreshments! There’s no food or water available for purchase on the estate, and after two hours in the Florida heat, you’ll definitely be wishing you had some.

I finally paid a visit to the Deering State. It’s a perfect activity to get disconnected from the busy city. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults but thanks to the Miami Dade Library Museum Pass, I was able to visit it for free. I enjoyed walking through the gardens, the Atlantic Ocean views and the architecture of the main building. All in all, a great activity for the whole family.

I chose to go see the Deering Estate on the weekend right before it closed. It was a spontaneous trip as I always wanted to go and found myself in the area and said why not? Therefore, there weren’t a lot of people and I was able to roam about and check out the external and internal sights and cottage museum. The wooden boardwalk in the mangrove forest is a great walk to take and it’s a little hidden. Do note the actual estate is being renovated, so there’s no access inside.

A beautiful historic site belonging to the Deering pioneer family with a beautiful old Florida mansion in Lucious Landscaping. There are manatees in a little harbor and that beautiful house that overlooks the grounds with ancient flair. There is always some cultural event taking place that makes it all the more impressive to walk the ancient trees forest and enjoy the best. The house is so well preserved even a basement with a pay phone that obviously came in later. Must come by and spend a lazy afternoon

If you've never visited Deering Estate, GO NOW!! 30+ years in Miami and today was my first visit. I just loved it. I was the first person in at 10am which made it more special. I had the whole place to myself! I really wanted to see the Christmas decorations and they did not disappoint. So unique, an Alice in Wonderland theme. I love that there are picnic tables, you can bring your food (nothing sold on premises, there is a Starbucks a block away) Sitting by the water was so relaxing and it was full of manatees. They offer nature tours daily but the weather interfered with today's tour. A perfect reason to visit again. The best $15 you will spend. There's also a great trail outside of the park that takes you to the Chinese Bridge.

I am really shocked that I am the first to write about this slice of peace and heaven. I used to live very close to this place, in Palmetto Bay years ago. The locals all know of this place, but not anyone unless you are local (hence being the first to review). It is located right next door to the Deering estate. The Deering estate is a national treasure but there is a small fee to enter. It is worthy of a visit as well, as they host several yearly events. One of the events is the Deering seafood festival, as well as other art events and xmas events which are definitely worthy of a visit for the History buffs. Anyway, back to this place. This was part of the original Deering empire but now it is a free dock for all and sundry to visit. To access it, put the address for the estate into you car sat nav. There is a car park which is free. Then there is a walkway to the right hand side from the main entrance to the estate. You will see a sign saying Peoples dock. It then leads round to a walkable decline to a straight road, with sea access. When you reach the bottom you will have the same views as the Deering family/estate would have had. It is a really nice quiet spot. I have seen so many people over the years here, couples arguing, dogs being walked., people fishing, sunbathing, chilling with a Starbucks (which is located v v nearby on the Old cutler road) Today I personally went down memory lane (as I now live in Miami Lakes) and remembered all the times I walked my dogs there (Jersey, rip) and my current dog Pickle who was 5 months old and learnt to frolic here (she is now 10) Please lmk what you think to this special place...

A beautiful estate and location, perfect for spending a few hours and admiring the art/house/nature. We even saw some manatees!

Beautiful property on the bay in my neighborhood. They host tours, have several events during the year and summer camp along with tons of other things. Has a wonderful history and the views are incredible. Great place for a photo shoot too! We hosted a leadership retreat with my company and it was a HUGE success!!

It was my last stop before I left Miami . Found this hidden gem by mistake on google and I gotta say I m soo glad I took a chance with it. If you are in Miami please do visit this beautyBtw, the ticket is only 15$ & so worth it..! The stuff were so nice & helpful. This is probably my favorite spot so far in Miami I was there for couple of hours & still didn't wanna leave lol! But had to catch my flight coming back home ..! What a tremendous way to finish a solo vacation !

The guided trail tour today -led by Jarret - was wonderful. He knows about everything from plants to the history of the Estate to the Indian Burial Mound and critters that live in the protected areas. It was an interesting tour which i highly recommend! The Stone House and Richmond Cottage were also exceptional! Authentic decor and videos, plaques, audio tour added to the great experience! The beautiful grounds and view of Biscayne Bay are a must to experience!

There are many beautiful old homes and historic buildings in Miami from Florida's land boom years in the 1920's and the 444 acre Deering Estate overlooking Biscayne Bay is one such example. The grounds of the estate are an environmental, archaeological and historic preserve containing one of the largest unspoiled coastal tropical hammocks in the United States. Through ten thousand years of human history Paleo Indians, Tequestas, Seminoles, Afro-Bahamians, and Anglo-Americans have all lived on the property that is now called the Deering Estate. Located in the Cutler neighborhood of Palmetto Bay, this was the retirement home of Charles Deering (1852-1927) who was a Chicago industrialist, preservationist, environmentalist, art collector, and philanthropist. He was the first chairman of the International Harvester Company. The property has a three-story wooden house built in 1900, called the Richmond Cottage which was named after S.H. Richmond and his wife Edith who, opened the house as an Inn which hosted such prominent guests Henry Morrison Flagler and James Ingrahm. In 1901 it was listed as the southern most hotel in the United States. In1916 the Richmond was purchased by Charles Deering who added it to other buildings he put on his on his estate which included a carriage house, pump house and power house. He also built a limestone and concrete wall surrounding the estate and built the boat turning basin in Biscayne Bay. While exploring the Richmond Cottage I discovered the alcove on the second floor that displays the results of all the paranormal investigations that have taken place around the estate. "Proof" included transcripts of conversations with spirits, accounts of first hand experiences, and photos. I enjoyed spending a few minutes looking through their albums and watching the short video. The estate has the reputation of being the most haunted in south Florida and in October through November the Deering estate offers ghost tours. In 1922 Deering completed his three-story Mediterranean Stone House designed by Phineas Pais who designed many of the beautiful buildings in Coral Gables. The home has poured concrete walls and oolitic limestone. The Chicago Fire of 1871 left such an impression on Deering that he built the home without a stove. All of the cooking was done at Richmond Cottage. Another unusual feature of the home for the time was that it had an elevator. Deering lived here until his death after which he passed to his wife and children. The last Deering relative living in the house passed away in 1982 and the property was listed for sale. The estate was acquired by the State of Florida in 1985, and is part of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, which manages the property. In 1986 the Deering Estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After Hurricane Andrew struck the estate in 1992, a wine cellar was discovered hidden behind cabinets. In addition to the buildings, the property contains two important archeological sites, the Cutler Burial Mound and the Cutler Fossil Site. One of the few surviving prehistoric mounds in Miami-Dade County, the Cutler Burial Mound contains the remains of 12 to 18 Native American from the Glades I and II periods (50,000 to 100,000 years ago). The Cutler Fossil Site is a sink hole discovered in 1979. It contains the bones of Pleistocene animals including extinct peccaries, mammoths, sloths, dire wolves, and saber-toothed cats along with artifacts from early humans. These sites are only accessible through a one hour walking tour led by a Deering Estate Naturalist. It is offered from October until May and included with the price of admission. In addition to touring the buildings and archeological sites the Deering estate offers canoe tours, paranormal investigations, bird walks, moonlit kayaking, Biscayne Bay boat tours, hiking on the nature trails, and eco-tours. The Deering Estate is open every day from 10 AM to 5 PM except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Adult admission is $15 but they offer different discount days. I was able to tour for $5 as part of a Fourth of July promotion. Follow them on Facebook to keep posted on all of the different events held at the estate throughout the year. I loved my visit here but be warned, it is hot in the summer. I hiked out to the Chinese Bridge but it was brutal in the sun. I definitely recommend coming in the fall and winter when it is more comfortable to walk around and do the eco and archaeology tours.

We had my son's birthday. The night hike was guided by Elias and Isaac. they were incredibly helpful. in addition, Elias was so knowledgeable. They were great with the kids as well. i highly recommend having you Child's birthday party here if they are true nature lovers.

The Deering Estate is great! Our daughter had her wedding reception there. It is beautiful and the location is perfect.

Property: gorgeous water view Interior Homes: 2 to view, nicely preserved with some new art added After visiting many historical properties in South Florida, I was not too impressed with this one. However, it was worth the special holiday $4 admission fee. Volunteer tour guides were very welcoming and helpful in providing detailed information on its history. Probably best to visit during cooler months without rain.

What a nice piece of heaven here in South Miami- so much history and such amazing vistas of Biscayne Bay. Definitely worth carving out a few hours to visit.

I absolutely loved my tour of the Deering Estate! My family and I ended up doing one of the nature tours, which was phenomenal. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen and bring a water bottle with you. We loved walking out near the water too. Simple beautiful area for a picnic lunch too. I look forward to visiting again!

Beautiful estate to enjoy with family. Must paid fee to enter but enter get to enjoy the beautiful estate unbothered. The Main house has the beautiful view of the bay and artifacts inside the house, such dresses, lamps, window painting, bedroom etc. The other house has the rocking chair which you can sit and enjoy the bay view, house also has artifacts and bedroom to see. One of my favorite part is the outside which can enjoy the amazing relaxing view of the bay, if you lucky can find manatee in the water.

I can't say enough great things about this beautiful place. Deering Estate at Cutler has got to be one of the highlights of my Miami adventure. Visit Deering Private Estate for a mere $12 per person. This past weekend, and days off from work, I took a drive down to Palmetto Bay for the day. I wanted to see this "best kept secret". l learned, only until a few decades ago, the Deering Estate was held privately by the Deering family. The property was held in trust and not to be sold until the last immediate heir to the original Deering no longer was living. Our guide told us that when the daughter passed on. bids were taken and the highest bidder was a foreign company who wanted to make it a sales room. The family decided against that and instead sold part if it to a private entity and part to the city of Miami. As result, you will find wonderful art collections housed in the mansion as well as brilliantly manicured grounds and walking trails. On a cooperating weather day one can even rent a kayak or pontoon to take out on the water. At the very least do plan to stay for lunch and picnic basket it. No foods sold on the premise but you are welcome to bring some in. Deering Estate by the way happens to be the sister property of Viscaya as that is where the other Deering brother built and owned. If you plan to visit that smaller estate also be sure to pick up your discount coupon at Deering.

If you're looking to spend a few hours outside in Miami and love history and nature, this is a great place to visit! I wasn't quite sure what to expect in visiting Deering Estate for the first time as their website focuses on events being hosted rather than a general visit. My husband and I knew they did tours, but couldn't easily find the information online, so we called. For reference: there are tours of the two residences at 10:30am and 3:00pm daily (about an hour) and a nature tour at 12:30pm (Oct-May, 2-2.5 hours). Both tours were led by knowledgeable people. We started with the nature tour and ended up with a private tour (awesome!). Be prepared for this- it's pretty long, so wear good shoes and make sure you wear sunscreen! It seemed that the nature tour could vary depending on weather; for instance, there was a section that we didn't go to because there was a lot of water (but it could be done with proper footwear). We learned a lot about the history of the land and the ongoing research that is still happening- really fascinating stuff! The house tour was also pretty cool- this tour focuses on the main floor of each of the two residences, but you are free to explore the second floor on your own (we didn't because we had already been there for a long time with the nature tour- and gives us a reason to go back). You are free to bring any food and beverages that you want as there are picnic areas on the grounds. This is definitely a great place to visit and keep going back to. They offer different events during the year, all of which look enticing!

After nearly a 9 mile run from South Miami, we came here for their 12:30pm nature trail hike with Jesse. Our second time to the Deering Estate but our first time on the main premises. Earlier in the week we went a screening of Changing Seas, and spoke with one of the researchers of the project, who painted a bleak pictures of our oceans acidification due to rising CO2 levels and its effects on Coral Reefs which are a main source of removing CO2 from our atmosphere. Very educational indeed. The nature hike occurs on parts of the property that are not open to the public without a guide mainly due to the sensitive ecosystems and ancient burial sites of the Tequesta Indians. I was especially impressed with with variety of vegetation and the beauty of the hike. Jesse also brought artifacts which were excavated on the property. As the seasons change I look forward to doing it again. We came here one day before the main event of the year which is the 13th Annual Seafood Festival, and we plan on attending it. While on the grounds we could see various vendors setting up for the big day. We also saw a manatee. Right before we left we signed up to become members for a year and also toured the stone house which had art from the different parts of the world including Spain and Holland. It also had a cool prohibition era wine cellar which had been locked for 40 years as the doors jammed shut from a hurricane. Most of the doors and door frames were lined in sheets of copper---beautiful! We checked out Serenddip a Tea and sampled some fresh tea. Then it was a 9 mile run back home. I great way to spend a day.

I had SO much fun fun here yesterday. The scenic views are absolutely gorgeous. I got here a bit late, around 2 pm, but it was sufficient time to see everything AND have a tour of the home(s). Originally I was worried that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the place as much since it seems like a huuuuuge space. Loved that the elevator in the property still works and you can use it and you can step into all the rooms! The staff here are SO friendly. I was asked ample times if I needed help & if I had questions about the property ask. Side Note: They also have other events here - Kayaking, speakeasy at night, Ghost tour, food festivals & eco classes.

This is an absolute beautiful place to have a wedding. My son and daughter in law got married there two years ago. The weather was perfect. The grounds were perfect. The only down fall is that there isn't a place to really get dressed. They have a room for you but it's not like a place you want to hang out and relax. But don't let they keep you from having your wedding there. It's romantic and private. Not tons of other people to deal with. Just your guests.

Oh I love it here! My husband and I were visiting and wanted to do something a little different than just roam South Beach. I came upon Deering Estate, wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised! My sister who has lived in Miami over 10 years hadn't ever been and wants to go back for another visit! You can take a tour or just show yourself around. The house is very well maintained, clean and kept in it's originality. I love the history behind this place since it gives you a peek into how life was back then. The grounds are well kept and the ocean breeze when you walk outside is heavenly. I'd love to go back, bring a sandwich, and chill out on a lovely afternoon.

Have enjoy visiting here on many different occasions as this property lends itself to host as a venue. It is pricey to rent out but even trickier to get the date you want. An with time. The grounds are neatly manicured and kept looking great. Wonder photo opportunities I was invited to participate in a guided canoeing trip that began in the backyard of the magnificent estate and took us into the waters of Biscayne Bay, continued through the mangroves of Deering Estate and back out to the waters is Biscayne Bay and nothe shores of Deering Estate. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and patient with all of us. There was about 40 in our group! We did well until reaching the mangroves. In the mangroves there were many holes we paddled through but the water was not as high to paddle through all the way and we had to get out and carry the Canoe over some of the roots of the mangroves and try to avoid the deep unforeseen holes in the murky waters. NOT GOING TO LIE. . . IT WAS SCARY & STINKY YET AMUSING. I was wearing silver jewelry and the deposits in the water allowed for a chemical reaction. That was interesting. As we noticed the bay water is different to the water in mangroves. We were able to see many different birds as well as small crabs and fish. It was a great workout and enjoyable time. If you get a chance to do the canoeing, I would suggest it! It was fun, exciting and a great experience. I am planning on my next canoeing trip!!!

Beautiful property. The wood work through out the mansion is amazing. The outside property is one of a kind, with up front ocean views. In the Deering cove there was 30+ manatees, what a sight to see.

We decided to go here to experience The 2017 Great American Solar Eclipse. It was my first time here, although I've been meaning to come for quite some time. I love this place because of it's Miami history. That fact that it's a bit hidden away is also nice because it allows you to fully enjoy the scenery. While we were there, we learned they have all sorts of events including a haunted house tour, moonlight kayaking and full moon yoga. It's even a nice place to settled down for a romantic picnic. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

Did you know that if you drive south on 67 Avenue you end up at the Deering Estate? The end of the avenue leads to the area purchased by the county and added to the original Deering Estate, making this property acres and acres of protected land. Following this route, however, is not the best way to reach the main entrance, although a right and two lefts will get you there. Whichever way you choose, once you arrive, the main entrance will pose one of many question: where to park? It seems that the designated parking lot is always full, so it's OK to park on any green area you find available. The entrance to the Deering Estate is a treat in and of itself. The greenery, the trees, the long road leading to the bay, a visit waiting to unravel. The concrete walkway will prevent you from wetting your shoes in the mud, as apparently it rains here every day. As you walk down the road, the mansion sits to your right preceded by a small plaza and a walkway to the artists studios. The whole area is like a complex with many buildings serving different purposes. Nothing is off limits but your priority should be the main house because it is amazing. The mansion is full of architectural features and I like being able to explore the mansion to its fullest. The bay as a backdrop makes the house a great place to photograph and in fact photography classes, as well as prints, are offered. Outside, the bay itself is calm and relaxing. The wave breakers invite you to sit on a bench. If you omit the big yellow sign warning of alligators, you could forget about the world for a moment. The sea is beautiful and mangroves encircle the area. I absolutely do not recommend exploring the mangroves though. You will have to jump on the roots and step into virgin territory, in other words, go around gigantic crabs that sit guarding the pristine vegetation. At your own risk for real. The backside of the property is surrounded by tall trees. There are several trails, and these seem to have been created for human travel. Depending on your luck, you may find groomed trails or lots of bugs hanging around and a mosquito army waiting to bite your exposed skin. For the explorers I recommend an extra pair of shoes, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a stick for self defense, a camera, a bottle of water, some zen and a lot of brass. For the rest of us, stick to the mansion and enjoy.

Not just Viscaya's little brother. This isn't just a historic building. Deering Estate is part of a way of life to us South Dade long time residents. Exhibit A is the special upfront parking section for golf carts and bicycles. First and Foremost, the Seafood festival. This event gets sold out every year. That is thousands of people. great seafood, live music, kids carnival stuff, vendors... just a lovely day! Then there is a truly immersive summer camp. Events all through the year. Including Christmas time: Carolers, Christmas lights, hot chocolate and cookies... Sign up to receive emails of upcoming events. That is free. Then become a member. If you are a family of 4 or more your membership is basically paid for just by going to the seafood festival.

Very nice experience. So nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami, come and explore here and relax. Stunning setting on Biscayne Bay. Great place for a wedding...one was actually being set up during my visit. Entrance fee of $15 is steep. It included a tour of the old homes which was just ok. A lot of artwork and period pieces throughout the homes. Definitely recommended for a nice day trip from Miami.

There are so many options to explore at Deering Estate, and it surprised me that there weren't more people partaking this past Saturday morning. From nosing around the houses themselves, to taking in the grounds on a well paved walking path, kayaking around the hammocks, napping on the grass, appreciating the diverse art installations, and picnic-ing in the shade of a dozen palms, I was not wanting for entertainment at all. We happened the stop by after the first tour at 10:30am ended, and didn't stay long enough to join the 3pm tour. However, there are plenty of informative signs for you self-guided explorers. Take the time to learn about the Deering lineage, rock in the chairs of Miami's history, and add a stanza to the living poem in one of the houses. Declare which bedroom is yours when you've accidentally traveled back in time. Pretend you've drunken from ever bottle in the wine cellar. Or find a cosy, shaded spot overlooking the clear waters and natural coastal hammocks. It all makes for a good date. The grounds are so well maintained, I can't wait to return for one of the events held at the Estate - I can't even begin to imagine what the place looks like after the sun goes down. Tip for the budget-conscious: check out a Museum Pass at the library. It's free with a library card, and good for up to a family of 4!

The staff was incredible and felt like one big, happy family. Their love for the estate and the nature which surrounds it is infectious thus made my time there amazing. The property is incredibly beautiful and there are so many engaging, interesting, and adventurous activities available! This is the perfect place to stop by during a vacation in Miami and I can guarantee the city is nothing compared to how beautiful the estate is. My time there was something I will cherish forever and I will never forget the wonderful staff!

For whatever reasons, Deering's own website showed Historic Holidays exhibit open till Jan 6, yet when we got there around noon on the 5th, we were told it was being taking down at the time and website info was incorrect! It was a total waste of two hours of our time and the worse part is the Deering staff there weren't interested in making any effort to remedy the situation. Highly disappointed!

Beautiful estate for walking or events. Breath taking.views. A board walk natural mango grove trail that does have an end. Great for pictures. Be ware of spiders. I recommend this and will be back

"This place is really Haunted!" A couple of weeks ago I received a call from a friend informing me she experienced the presence of a few poltergeist's at the Deering estate and a demonic presence at the ancient Tequesta Indian burial mounds on the property. Both I and that particular friend can communicate, sense and perceive specters and other energy presences. This news excited me as I was eager to investigate this potential real life horror movie experience. I visited Deering estate the following Saturday, fortunately I had missed the 3:00 pm tour(there's also another daily tour at 10:30 am). The reason why I say fortunately, is because I'm certain if I were in a group I wouldn't have experienced the paranormal experiences I did. I decided to enter the main stone house first and proceeded to the basement wine collection. While there I felt a powerful presence in the north east corner of the room, but not an evil presence. http://bit.ly/1yEDKMb I approached the dark corner where the spirit was, to take some photos. The closer I came, the stronger the presence became, once I arrived every hair on my body stood on end. As I took the photos the spirit was standing by me side by side. But the presence was not evil, it was just a strong spirit presence. Walking around the 1st floor I could feel a presence that didn't want me there. On the second floor in one of the bedrooms I could sense an unclean spirit sitting on the bed. http://bit.ly/1yEHfCg I then proceeded to a room further down the hall with a creepy old wooden wheel chair. Here I felt a very strong angry unwelcoming presence, it was Mr Deering himself sitting on the chair. http://bit.ly/1tA5WPU After I took my photos, I proceeded to leave and go back down stairs, when I heard this unnerving demonic whisper, similar to something you would hear in the movie The Exorcist or The Omen. The whispering sounded similar to this http://youtu.be/CwANdTegbR4 I followed the whisper to the end of the hallway, the whisper was trying to lure me to the third floor. But the third floor was cordoned off. To tell you the truth there was no way in hell I was going up to the third floor anyway, not after hearing that crap. I left that house without haste. I then tried to find the burial mounds and I walked down to the end of the boardwalk through the dark mangroves, but I couldn't find the burial mounds. I later found out that the burial mounds were cordoned off by a locked gate and I could only see them by way of a once a day nature tour at 12:30. I came back the following Saturday to take the tour to see the burial mounds. Being that my friend experienced a demonic presence at the burial mounds, I decided to bring a couple of weapons with me, a bag of sea salt and a magical spray that feels like fire to any spirit or demon. The walk was about half a mile into the wilderness to reach the burial mounds. Oddly I sensed nothing, nothing at all. Once we reached the mounds, I put out my senses in all directions and again I sensed nothing. The only thing I felt were demonic mosquitoes biting the hell out of me, even though I sprayed myself with repellent. But I noticed an odd apparition in one of the pictures I took of the mound. http://bit.ly/1tA6xkx Notes: -The Deering estate has ghost tours and a overnight event where you can do your own paranormal investigations. - Personally I wouldn't advise coming to this estate at night with few people(come with many people), or spending the night here. Reason being, I sensed that Mr Deering was practicing the dark arts, such as evoking powerful dark entities somewhere within the surrounding wilderness. I believe those portals are still open and at night they periodically come out. - Every painting of Mr Deering in the estate seemed alive with his presence, as if he is watching all that goes on in his mansion. - Typically I never sense feel nor see spirits in the day time, they typically only come out at night. The fact that I did during the day at the Deering estate tells me these spirits are very powerful.

It's a nice piece of property along the Atlantic coast and I had a hard time finding the Deering Estate at first. But after about 10 minutes, finally found the main parking lot and visitor's center. It's $12 admission to get into the grounds and property itself. Nice palm trees, large lawn, and some picnic areas, plus a long boardwalk. There are quite a few rules on personal photography, though I believe one of them for sure is that no photography is allowed inside the house, besides the fact that I didn't have time for a tour of the house anyway. As for the rest of the outside property and building exteriors, that wasn't much of an issue, From what I read once, you're supposed to pay this fee (don't know how much) to take personal photos, but that's lame in any case.

What a great way to spend a day !! Absolutely beautiful grounds. We tool guided tour. The gentleman that led our tour was great ! So much knowledge about the estate and the plants and animals found on property!! After the tour we just wandered around exploring on our own. Had a picnic lunch under the trees with amazing bay views. Will definitely return .

Miami may not have the history* of other big cities but when visiting a site like the Deering Estate at Cutler, it's hard to make that argument. With a home and view that would have fit in perfectly with The Great Gatsby, the mansion and grounds allow you to daydream of a time long since past. First off, take note of the various festivals and promotions that take place here. If you time it right, you can even visit free of charge. I know that's the magic phrase in the 305. So, research and make your wallet happy. From there, there are three distinct ways in which to enjoy the site: the mansion, the grounds, the water. The mansion. This is the way to live -- no unsightly white cubes. No neon lighting. There's 'just' beautiful Spanish tile, ceilings, balconies, windows, drawing rooms, porches, grand staircases, clawfoot tubs, and the like. Typically, my eye isn't drawn to this style of architecture (give me a Southern Colonial any day every day) but while walking through the house, I definitely day dreamed of where I would put my things and how I would rule the land with an iron fist... until I heard whispers that that joint is haunted. Um, I'm okay. Daytime visits only. The grounds. Strolling the green space at the Estate will truly make you feel like a person on means. The trees, the gorgeous grass, the mangrove trail, the fire pit, the majestic front lawn, and the various walking paths all demand your attention and coerce you to fall in love with nature. Not that you heard it from me, but the experience is rather romantic. Earn points, fellas. The water. As mentioned before, I am an Earth sign. I am much more likely to wander a field and enjoy the woods than I am to spend a day on the water. A day *looking* at the water, however, is a different things altogether. Leaving Miami, I tend to forget that the shoreline extends all the way down the rest of the state. This is waterfront property at its best and laying down under a tree, legs outstretched, feeling the sun on your skin and breeze on your face isn't a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I much prefer a tranquil water scene like this to the madness of South Beach. On a clear day you can see forever and there are many many clear days at Deering Estate. *Relative perspective.

PERFECT FOR PHOTOGRAPHY! So glad we discovered this place. Surprisingly, not too many people know about this gem. I went to take some photos and they just came out amazing. The tropical feel of this park is spectacular. The house has a beautiful terrace with old fashioned seats and furniture. Theres a nice fireplace room with checkered floor. The ocean view is right outside and theres a huge grass field as well. Many cute places to take photos at so if you want a good photo session with pops of colors and nature,and history, this is the place to go! Tours of the area are also available. They charge a general entrance fee per person but it is worth it!

If you loved Vizcaya, you probably will also love the Deering Estate at Cutler. They're both stately places with impressive mansions. But with a different style. Vizcaya evokes old Italian Renaissance or Mediterranean Revival style of architecture. Deering Estate is decidely more American - stone mansion, wood buildings, and yet still impressive grounds and decor. Probably you would like the grounds facing the bay at Deering Estate than you would at Vizcaya. Both the Deering Estate at Cutler and Vizcaya were made by members of the same family - the Deering family. James Deering built the Deering Estate while his older half-brother, Charles Deering built Vizcaya. Great venue for outdoor events! Went there for a live concert. The set up is pretty easy, bring your picnic food, chairs, blankets, and all and relax while the concert is on. Such a nice place for outdoors, eating some picnic food, just perfect. When there is a full moon, the view and reflection on the water is beautiful, no lights needed. Small lake all the way behind, a bit far from the stage but still a very nice place to relax, meditate or just chill. Try to go to the events at the Deering Estate, they are totally worth it!

I have been several times for events such as sunrise service, full moon party and wedding to name a few. This past weekend we decided to go and tour the houses and enjoy the property. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of having very few people there. We also saw Manatees swimming in the lagoon which was really fun to watch. From here we went to Dapple bar & kitchen in Palmetto Bay on US1 & 145st for drinks & dinner, another hidden gem in the area. I would say we had a pretty spectacular day.

I went on a rainy day and couldn't enjoy it as much as I would of liked but I still got to see the inside of the house and the small cottage. The mosquitoes were attacking me so I suggest taking bug spray. Although I couldn't go outside to the backyard, it was still beautiful to see the palm trees near the ocean. There really isn't much to see but the history is still worth learning about.

What a gem this place is. It one of the most beautiful and unusual parks in our area. With beatufil ocean views and 450 acres of natural areas. It offers a glance at history during the early years of this community. You can follow tours in natural areas or take guided canoe trips to Chicken key. It is also home to Charles Deering's winter home.

this is such an amazing experience! the staff is so incredibly nice and enthusiastic. the energy there is infection, especially for school groups. they are so happy to not only just share their knowledge but also continue learning themselves. this is a place like no other, it is so special.

I absolutely looove The Deering Estate being a member I go to almost all the activities. The two Historic Houses are wonderful the Richmond Cottage dates from the Miami Pioneers era and the Stone House is from the early 1920's but the star of the show is the location right in front of the bay surrounded by palm trees is so magical and peaceful that while you are there you feel like to travel in time to a more peaceful times. Dont miss it is wonderful.

Great place to take the kids, great place to have a membership, which by the way pays for itself when it comes to their annual seafood Festival. Great staff, especially the kids camp staff.

The Deering estate is really a hidden treasure I bet a lot of folks in South Florida do not even know exists. To me, like the Barnacle in Coconut Grove, this gem deserves all the acclaim and visitation it can get due to its rich history and just vast array of beauty. I first visited Deering for the first time only three years ago, as I did again this year for the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony along with seeing the rooms of the houses dressed up. My fiancé is part of an organization who helps decorate, so I am a little bias as to the tradition and all it entails. But walking around just a bit of the property you will smile for hours and days forward as this is a magical spot for couples, families, dreamers and anyone who may enjoy nature and just the beauty alone. It would serve a great spot for a wedding or any type of similar function as well. I cannot wait to go back, hopefully sooner than next year for the tree lighting, though the hot chocolate they dish out is wonderful and worth it for that time of year too.

$12 to enter. It's so beautiful & peaceful here. There are many benches to sit and just look out at the bay. You may also tour the house or just wander around the estate. Great for pictures, birthday parties, weddings, etc.

This review is incredibly biased because the Deering Estate has been a large part of my life. My parents live across the street from the edge of the property, I have attended countless events, my father has been a volunteer there for decades and was even president of the Deering Estate Foundation, I was a summer camp counselor for a number of years, and while I don't know any of the existing staff, I still make trips down to the people's dock every time I'm back in Palmetto Bay. The Deering Estate is one of the most naturally beautiful spots in Miami, and one of the most historic. The history dates back to European explorers, as it is still home to a Tequesta burial mound and at least one midden. Eventually the area would be settled by white Americans, building the first Richmond cottage, before eventually being bought by Charles Deering, brother of Vizcaya owner James Deering. Charles built his stone house as he had survived the great Chicago fire and was paranoid about fire - thus he also established water pipes and the pump house throughout the estate. I remember trips here in my youth, but Hurricane Andrew changed a lot of Miami, and the Deering Estate is no different. Today as you walk down the Royal Palm path, you can see the water markings of where the water came up during the storm. Many trees were damaged, areas drudged up. But the most interesting fact, which had alluded staff for years, was that Charles Deering was a bootlegger and he had a secret cellar, hidden behind a bookcase and a vault. Sadly it wasn't hidden by Hurricane Andrew and his unknown, yet priceless wine collection was destroyed. Today you can pay for admittance to the estate, visiting the Richmond Cottage, the Stonehouse, the boat basin, the mangrove trail. If you get a tour from one of the naturalists, you can get into the hardwood hammock and pine rocklands. If you are lucky, you can check out the Bamboo grove or book a canoe trip out to Chicken Key. The summer day camp also offers a lot of this. During my time as a counselor I saw raccoons, armadillos, owls, & hawks; swam with manatees and sharks; canoed past rays. If you want to know about ghosts, just ask.
