I don't even know how to begin writing about DEETJEN'S, an awesome establishment along Big Sur's PCH which happens to be a historic site as well.
We are camped in a nearby campsite and we strategically did not pack cooking gear just so we could finally try out as many eating places along the Big Sur Coast as we can in the 3 1/2 days we are here. DEETJEN's was definitely on my must-try list.
We left our campsite early one morning and made the drive here. DEETJEN's was very nicely nestled along the "fold" of the coast making it easy to miss as it is almost hidden by trees, other foliage, and the cliff's shadow.
Once you make the oh-my-gosh-turn-into-that-driveway-NOW turn, you will have to make your way through Scandinavian-type (not modern, of course) cabins and a bridge crossing a multi-level small-flow-waterfall-along-a-creek to get to the parking lot in the back of the property.
Oh my gosh, I am so glad I came to this place. Just walking through the property was relaxing.
Walking from the parking lot in the back to the restaurant at the front, we had to walk by several cabins, a shed that served as a library with two very cozy reading chairs, another cute shed crawling with jasmine that served as a linen closet and a little sitting area surrounded by flowering bushes.
Oh goodness, look at the length of this review and I haven't even started on the food!
EGGS BENEDICT was very good. The Hollandaise sauce was legit and the portion was big enough for two adults.
The PANCAKE was fluffy and came with butter, syrup and berries. Definitely too big for a five-year-old to finish by herself.
The FRENCH TOAST was so good. It also came with butter, syrup and berries. This too was too big for a ten-year-old to finish by herself,
The CHORIZO BURRITO was giant and since we have to finish the girls' breakfasts too, we took it with us for lunch later on.
The TEA is a whole legit set up that includes a pot, the cup, honey, lemon, LOOSE LEAF TEA (!), the strainer, and sugar cubes.
The HOT CHOCOLATE was large, rich and so good.
The restroom is located in the back and at first look, my brain went "outhouse". But it wasn't, really. Firstly, the bathroom wasn't a freestanding structure; it is attached to the restaurant building. Second of all, the inside is all sorts of cottage charm.
We visited in April and the whole property is dressed for spring. Flowers were blooming everywhere and crawling over everything. There are nooks and crannies at almost every turn that makes you want to just sit and kill your time here.
Would I go back? What do you think?!?!
