I have been a semi-regular gym-goer for my adult life and knew about Crossfit for years but didn't join because it has a bit of a reputation for causing injuries. After hearing Crossfit praises from a friend, I decided to see what all the fuss was about, and here's my review of Crossfit Defined one year later.
WORKOUTS AND COACHING
Noal develops the WODs (workout of the day) and they are deliberate and interesting. The warm-ups usually relate to the skill that we'll be working on and the exercises in the WOD are all usually equally challenging, but scaleable. The workouts have regular 1 rep max testing so you can see how you're progressing strength-wise. It's really hard to teach a class well and it is fascinating how engaging, fun, and detail-oriented these coaches are. A special shout-out to Coach Kevin and his dedication...he could be running a large class and see you in the corner squatting by yourself, give you one pointer, return to leading the class, see you perform your next squat, then come back with feedback without skipping a beat. He'll see me pick up a 20 lb weight and tell me to go back and get a 25 because he knows I can do it. I regularly get feedback on technique here in a non-judgy way, and all the coaches can answer my "why are we doing this?" questions. These classes are almost like having a personal trainer, but with less cost and more fun. Because of the coaching and my improved consistency, I've made more progress in one year than I have in all the on-and-off exercising that I've done in the past decade. Hint: take a photo of yourself before you start at this gym and one year later! The on-ramp before taking regular classes was a great intro, though as a physical therapist, I would've liked more safety info for newbies (how often to train, how to not hit someone with a barbell, how to scale, how to improve posture), though this stuff is consistently reinforced in regular classes and the coaches care about preventing injuries.
ADMINISTRATION AND FACILITIES
Noal and David, the owners, have very different and complementary personalities that I'm sure help the gym run smoothly. One thing that would be nice is if there were a regular full-time cleaning person. We end up on the floor almost every workout and it's gross wiping off all the debris from earlier classes off your shirt. The bathrooms are really large, handicapped accessible, and and have private showers. The gym has a mini-store of t-shirts and protein powders, though it would be nice if they had some vegan offerings. Crossfit and Paleo are annoyingly married here, as I assume they are at most Crossfit gyms. The gym is handicapped accessible and coaches will help if you have an injury or disability. The owners are incredibly responsive to its members and will change class times or types of classes as demand warrants. The classes can get a little crowded, but with more people, the intensity increases and I honestly don't mind it most of the time. Also, you're paying month to month with no other random fees, so if you need to cancel or stop for a month, from what I hear, it's easy.
CULTURE
After a year of working out here as a not super outgoing person, the regular coaches know my name and a bit about me. The gym goers are of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities, and mostly reflect the population in Lakeview, they just look stronger. One thing that struck me when I first started here was how muscular and strong the women were in particular... and now I'm becoming one of them. :) People occasionally come to drop-in, and it's pretty cute how the coach welcomes and introduces them to the group. Everyone is incredibly kind and positive, and the coaches encourage you to introduce yourself to other members and promote an accepting atmosphere. Because of this, it's easy for this gym to turn into a low-key place to socialize and look forward to. It's easy to tell that the owners see this place as more than a gym and it definitely feels that way.
I could go on... If you're on the fence about spending a significant chunk of change every month, think of it as one of the best investments in yourself you can make -- physically, mentally, and socially. It doesn't matter if you've had trouble going to the gym regularly in the past or you've been a competitive athlete, this place is for you. Seriously. Do it.
