Melbourne’s Best Cafes for Breakfast and Outstanding Coffee | Eater

"Tucked into one of the city’s busiest laneways, this spot serves excellent coffee and straightforward, comforting dishes in a Montmartre-esque atmosphere; signature options include a pan of Spanish baked eggs and classic poached eggs on toast, all enjoyed amid the bustle of suits and city life." - Tristan Lutze

I personally loved the vibe, it is in a small alleyway with so many cafes around. They offer seating inside and outside. We chose to sit outside under the heaters. It coffee and food were amazing. The croissant was delicious, it was perfectly soft and flaky 👌🏼 The staff are lovely and the service was excellent. Definitely recommend!

Seated inside for a quick arvo tea, indoor seating is perfect for the low-lit close and casual vibe. Wait staff recommended Chipotle Spiced Brownie when I was looking for a dessert with my Almond Hot Chocolate and it did not disappoint! Best choice made that day! Highly endorse this lovely decadent brownie with a hint of spice balanced perfectly with the fresh tart raspberries, blueberries and cream. What a treat to have stumbled upon in transit. Most cafes close by 3-4pm but this gem continues service into the night so you won't miss out! Thank you to the staff and owner for the prompt, superb service, didn't even have to ask for table water, it was readily served - these little details make all the difference!!

Good food but mediocre mont blanc. 12$ for very inconsistent Montblanc in a very popular area ain't it. Was very disappointed about the quality, my Mont blanc was on the right with barely any cream at all, it felt more like an Iced long black with how it was made. For a place that advertised their vast coffee options it was bad, royal stacks serves a better Mont Blanc for 8$.

They offer a wonderful experience on AirBNB where they bring you behind the coffee bar and provide a hands-on barista training. This was such a unique experience, and I couldn't have asked for a better host. Set in one of Melbourne's iconic laneway cafes, you are literally behind the coffee bar of a bustling full service cafe — watching how the coffee is made and partaking in it yourself. Learned how to grind, measure, steam, and watched/ helped prepare nearly a dozen different drinks. You will get more than your fair share of caffeine, and you will leave with a deep appreciation for the art of coffee as well as a base level skillset to make you dangerous in your own at-home coffee bar. No question was off limits and none left unanswered by Tony or the friendly barista behind the bag alongside us. Tony is a class act and is full of passion. Over thirty years in the business, he started his first cafe at age 23 with his lovely wife Kathy who also runs the business. They own the cafe next door too and are veterans in hospitality and coffee alike. Super hands on experience. I couldn't recommend it enough!

The atmosphere is beautiful the food is standard, but the service was HORRIBLE. I waited over half an hour only to receive some chips that tasted burnt, the atmosphere was chaotic, my other order was forgotten and not received , the waiters did not approach my table and I had to get up after waiting for long periods of time just to communicate with them. I will not be dining here again unfortunately, I had high hopes due to the lightly atmosphere surrounding this place

We stumbled upon this charming espresso spot by accident on our anniversary a couple of years ago, and it instantly became a favourite. From the outside it looks simple, but inside it has a story and an atmosphere that makes it special. The coffee is absolutely delicious. Truly like a real Italian espresso and the food is consistently lovely. Even though we live far away, we always make a point to visit whenever we can. Highly recommend!

I have been coming here for near on 30 years! Introduced by a dear friend all that time ago. I began to cherish that Degraves always knew how to serve their food, tasty and piping hot, and their coffee always on point no matter how you ordered it. Today I ordered two poached eggs, with a side of bacon, chorizo, smoked salmon and hollandaise. Strong warm latte x 2 and I am in heaven. I always bring family here for the overall experience, and I am pleasantly impressed every time with their service, work ethic and willingness to serve their customers the old fashioned way. Thank you Degraves Espresso for that stable happy experience 30 years in the making, and IFYKYK, Cheers

Well I found my new favourite place in Melbourne for a cup of tea and cake! Brought my Japanese friend here for a coffee for him (which he said was excellent), I drink tea so I'm used to getting pretty average tea but the tea here did not disappoint in any way, it was a fantastic Earl Grey, thank you! And I asked our server for her recommendation for a cake, she suggested the Basque cheesecake, and I am so glad she did! It was amazing!!!! Soft and gooey on the inside, smokey and caramelised on the outside, it was everything I could have wished for. I'd travel back to Melbourne just for this cheesecake!
