Where to Eat in the Connecticut Shoreline Towns of Guilford, Madison, and Clinton | Eater Boston

"A newer local outpost of a Niantic institution, this bagel shop is notable for chewy, well-textured bagels with a cornmeal dusting and creative, out-of-the-box flavors such as roasted garlic and a red pepper–and–feta variety; the Guilford location opened in 2022." - Georgia Kral

Google
We tried Zeke's Bagels on our Saturday morning ride. I heard they had great bagels. I ordered a BEC on onion bagel, cream cheese on everything and olive and rosemary with cream cheese and large coffees. Our order came quickly and they had plenty of bagel varieties! Some reviewers said the selection was poor, but that wasn't the case. Zeke's is also in Niantic, where they do most of the baking. So may explain why selection runs thin. The staff was pleasant, service was quick. This place has seats for four people only! I would come again The bagels were delicious!

I’ve been to Deke’s Bagels three times. Every time they’ve been phenomenal. The bagels are absolutely delicious; eggs cooked to perfection, bacon perfectly crisp. I always get the double double ( double egg, double bacon ) and they always get it right. I’ve eaten BECs in Vermont, NY, Mass, and CT. Therefore I have the experience to say this place is top tier. Great service as well.

Nestled in the heart of Guilford, Deke's Bagels is a hidden gem that deserves every bit of praise it gets. From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly baked bagels fills the air, complemented by the enticing scent of locally roasted Perkatory coffee. It's a sensory delight that sets the stage for what's to come. Let's talk about the bagels - they are simply to die for. Chewy yet soft, with a perfect crust, they are hands down better than any competition in the area. Choosing a breakfast sandwich was no easy feat because each option sounded mouthwateringly delicious. Eventually, I settled on the Taylor pork sandwich and the Marigotta, both of which were absolute stars. The Taylor pork sandwich was a symphony of flavors, with tender pork complemented by just the right amount of salty, smoky, and chersy. On the other hand, the Marigotta boasted a perfect balance of avocado and creamy elements that left me craving more. Overall, Deke's Bagels exceeded my expectations. The quality of their food, coupled with the welcoming atmosphere and friendly service, ensures that I'll be returning again and again. Whether you're a local or just passing through, do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. You won't regret it.

Google
Good Bagels. Good cream cheese, lots of options for both. Friendly staff, fair prices. Not the BEST I've ever had, but very good nonetheless. Would recommend if you're in the area.

Google
This place is horrible!! Bagels and cream cheese are great. The business itself sucks. They are out of coffee by 11:25 AM. Three times by 10:30 AM they are out of creamer and or certain bagels. They have a 10 foot breakfast bar with one, I repeat one stool. I walked in one time at 11:30 and they were behind the counter and closing already…. When it states online that they’re open later than that. don’t waste your time.

Google
First I gotta say, the staff at this location is top notch!! Very very nice, and definitely known their products, they are extremely polite and friendly. The flavors of bagels available are fantastic and there is a nice selection of complimenting spreads. The flavors are rich but not over powering. Great little spot to grab breakfast. They do have sandwiches too, but I'm hooked on the bagels!! Side note, the coffee is great too!! Proud to support another local business!!!

Google
Foods good but never open 3 sundays in a row trying to get bagels. 3 weeks ago walk in a little before 9 am and they’re pulling bagels off the shelf saying they’re closed. Last Sunday I went at 830 a sign was up saying they were having issues (I understand that) today I called at 730 phone doesn’t work online says they’re open go a little before 8 and they’re closed. Need to find a better way to communicate if you’re open or closed. With social media now a days it takes 2 seconds to put up a post or a story they you will be closed for the day. If I didn’t live close I wouldn’t bother going again. Either find better employees that want to be there or work on a way to inform customers. This is just an example of the last 3 weeks but this has been an issue for months hit or miss if they are open

Google
This regular is done. Don't bother going here as they will call you, tell you bagels are out, and lock their doors. You'll have to call for a refund that is not guarenteed. Placed an order today online, was called that they were out. Went to the store and the doors were locked. Had to call, spoke to Deke and he kept on interrupting me. Please don't be combative. I've worked in the customer service industry for years and you need to let your clients / customers speak. So I'm leaving what I wanted to say here as it fell on deaf ears. Your shoreline people love you. Your bagels are fantastic, legit the best. But your lack of honesty will keep customers away. Simple as that. I loved your staff, especially Alonni. I hope you can make things right. Until then, I'm done. Buyer beware.

Yelp
Great bagels- big improvement from when they first opened in both bagels and presentation of food. This has become our weekend go to place for lox sandwhiches or bagels. Great crust and chew and reliable fast service. Order early for best selection.

Yelp
Dekes Bagel's "far from ordinary". So they claim. But that was so two years ago. Now they are your average bagel shop coupled with below average service. I went in for their delicious dirt bomb pastry. All sold out...again. It is only 10:00am. I was able to purchase one time. That must have been my lucky day, because I only see it advertised on their menu and never available. Then I could not find their orange cranberry bagel with a slice of orange baked into it on top. I inquired about that too, wondering if they are still making them. The woman said, "No!" . Then mumbled something in her native Indian language to the other woman behind the counter from India. I settled on an everything bagel with butter to go. It was handed to me in parchment paper. Then she was put out that I requested a small bag to place my bagel in, since I was taking it on the road. First she handed me the bag. Then she thought about that fir a second and started to assist me with packaging. So sad for Deke's and our beloved neighborhood. They USED to be exceptional.

Yelp
If you like your bagel, big and chewy with a cornmeal crunch on the bottom, this may be your bagel. Like pizza, bagels are personal: Chewy, dense, crunchy, loaded with seeds or toppings, boiled, or baked, Schmear or no Schmear. These are bigger than average or traditional bagels. If you go anytime after 11:30 the choices become less than the broad options. I had the asiago toasted twice for some crunch, not knowing that there was the cornmeal bottom which made it even crunchier, and scallion cream cheese. I didn't find the cream cheese to be very onion. It was actually very light tasting not my favorite. Overall these are solid bagels.

Yelp
Their bagels are terrific. they should open when they say they're going to be open. who has time to waste at 7:30 in the morning?

Yelp
The staff at Dekes are the best Chris & Tiffany are my favorites. They never miss a chance to chat remember our faces and all around just great. They always take the time to greet everyone individually. Their variety of bagels is the best and never have I been disappointed!! It's cute cozy and very home like. Love it

Yelp
Sunday 930. No coffee, no napkins, no bags to hold my meal in, old salmon on the wrong bagel. Is this place going out of business? What's going on.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
This was my fifth attempt at a try. The first four tries I was confronted with. Closed restaurant despite preemptively checking the hours on Google. This time I ordered a sandwich from the menu without any variation or substitutions. I got a different sandwich than ordered. The corned beef on the sandwich I did get was DEEPLY sour - inedible. It went to the trash. The second sandwich was unremarkable but fine. Both sandwiched (egg and meat on a bagel) were handed to me packaged different let and without a bag or napkins. I will not be back. The staff was patient and kind enough but ultimately ineffectual.
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
I had a delicious bacon, egg and cheese bagel with scallion cream cheese. The bagel had full slices of bacon and cheese baked onto the top. There was plenty of cream cheese. Dekes has a nice variety of bagel flavors and they are displayed attractively. The sandwiches all sounded very appealing, but seemed rather pricey to me. Maybe next time. They offer coffee and a few kinds of beverages, but there didn't seem to be much variety available. There are a few stools at the window bar, but otherwise this is strictly a to-go or eat in your car kind of situation.

Yelp
Their bagels and sandwiches are terrific. Ingredients are fresh. Service is friendly and prompt.

Yelp
TERRIBLE! We went in, we were the only ones there at the time. Ordered two sandwiches. They proceeded to take and deliver other orders while we were waiting. Took a call from someone who found a pit in their olive rosemary bagel. Listen to guy in the kitchen say "probably" when asked if they have avocado...isn't this a yes or no question? Open the sandwiches as soon as we get in the car, because of course they have no seating. Sandwiches are ice cold somehow, probably because they started making them and then went ADD making others' orders before finishing ours. Turkey on the jagel bagel is dry like the desert and the cold egg is also somehow over cooked. Would be helpful to cut in half. One cut in half and wrapped in paper. The other not cut and put in a plastic box. Why?? With tip we paid $35 (!!!!) for two bagel sandwiches, one coffee and one pastry. Deke's, you can do better. I know I can do better and get a full and properly cooked breakfast for less than this. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Foood was amazing! I got a jalapeño cheddar bagel with chipotle cream, my partner got a bacon egg and cheese extra bacon! The staff was wonderful and super sweet. Highly recommend this bagel shop! Best bagel I've had in while!!!!!
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Although I love the bagels here, they need to work on their sanitation and food handling. I walked in today to pick up my sandwich that I ordered online and the employees were eating in the same area that food was being prepared. I was handed my sandwich while the employee was still chewing. This is definitely against the health rules. Please have your employees brush up on the health codes. This is definitely not sanitary.

Yelp
Really love that Guilford has its own bagel place now. I used to live in that town and always wanted them to open one. Took a visit to Deke's and loved the selection of bagels, spreads, pastries, and smoothies. I got The Niantic sandwich and it did not disappoint. Enjoyed the bagels and all! Take a visit here! Yelp
I'm a jersey girl and this place has TAYLOR HAM. These are true bagel people that know what they are doing. I love the spot, and it's very casual bar like awaiting area with all the different kinds of bagels on display.

Yelp
Really want to give a stronger review because the staff was so nice! But arriving on a Friday around 10:30, they had no plain cream cheese. With all the neat flavors of bagels, plain cream cheese would really be the top choice. Also, no plain bagels to have the fun cream cheeses. Bacon, egg, and cheese bagel was good, fun- had horseradish and bacon cream cheese. Totally different. Husband- he was disappointed with the no plain cream chz. When I suggested he should have used butter, he agreed. Daughter- egg with veggie cc. She's from NYC, so a critique of bagels: "it was fine, not memorable." Mixed opinions on texture of the bagels. We hope to go back one more time to try out our coulda shoulda wouldas

Yelp
They have artisan bagels there! Artichoke spinach and feta! With pieces of artichoke. Interesting flavors. Beautiful bagels!

Marie B.

Yelp
Well, I'm 0 for 2 on this place. I attempted to get a bagel here a couple years back. I barely got a foot in the door when the cashier aggressively informed me that they were not serving that day. I attempted to ask if she knew where there was another place I could get a bagel and she simply said I told you we are not serving today. Well several years later, I thought I'd give them another shot. I'm sitting outside an empty bagel shop at 10:16 on a Tuesday morning in the middle of summer on the Connecticut Shoreline. There's a note on the door that says it's due to a lack of staff. While my heart goes out to them, I'm done being disappointed with this place. If they had better management, they wouldn't have miserable employees several years ago and no employees today. I think this is a reflection on the owners and the management of the establishment and I will not attempt to support this place again

Yelp
Great bagels and cream cheese! Would recommend as a morning stop if you're in the area.

Yelp
Stopped in here yesterday to grab a bagel and a coffee on my way to work. I had a gift card, so I figured why not try this place out. The display of their bagel flavors and options was beautiful. I opted for a french toast bagel with brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese. I inquired if it would have been a sugar overload of a combination, but the cashier assured me that it would be just right and not overly sweet. She was right, the flavors together were great. I thought perhaps they would have had some fun coffees to try as well, but alas, it's more of a here's your cup of coffee and over there is the counter of creamer and sugar packets to help yourself.

Yelp
So excited we finally stopped at Deke's Bagels newly opened shop in Guilford. As a lover of bagels and bagel sandwiches (who isn't) I had very high expectations about this place after hearing good things. Let me tell you, it lived up to the hype. Such a cute shop with tons to choose from and so many unique flavor combos. We each got a breakfast sandwich and split them. One was The Niantic which was two eggs, ham, bacon, hash brown, cheddar and american on an everything bagel. The bagel was perfectly crispy and chewy, probably one of the most perfect everything bagels that I've had around CT! This sandwich was LOADED and the hash brown took it to another level. The other sandwich was the Chile Relleno with egg, ham, cheddar and scallion cream cheese on a cheddar jalapeno bagel. So. Good. As someone who frequently orders a cheddar jalapeno bagel, this one was perfection. Tons of jalepeno so not for the faint of heart! There's also something special about a bagel sandwich with cream cheese. It adds a whole new level to the sandwich. We also ordered a cinnamon roll which was HUGE but we both agreed was a little too sweet. Definitely will be back next time we're in Guilford. Have to try a classic bagel next time. I'm eyeing that bacon horseradish cream cheese!

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, I really did, but I just wasn't thrilled by anything I've had there. The staff is nice and it's a cute place with a decent selection, but these bagels are nothing special. I haven't found anything there to get excited about....

Yelp
I'd come from California for Deke's Bagels! Oh wait, I have, and I'll do it again! Great bagels, friendly staff, good service. I will definitely come back!

Robin M.

Yelp
Never again. I'm disgusted with this place. This deranged woman who is the manager is instantly combative and brushed her hair all over the bagels. If your hair touches the counter you. really need to be wearing a hairnet, I watched two instances with this deranged seemingly mentally unwell woman yelling and allowing her hair to touch the counters and the bagels in the display case, absolutely disgusting. Almost as bad was the horrible service with half the employees standing around doing nothing? 9 dollars for a half full container of egg salad? Another 9 dollars for tuna salad with no mayo? This place is a joke, anyone with bagel making experience please put this place out of business. Zero leadership and not a care to be given. Four employees doing the work of one, don't waste your time or money. We called for a refund on the egg salad and Tuna salad and they said they would give us a refund in person. I asked to come back the next day because it's 15 minutes away and I'll be in the area tomorrow. I came back to return the tuna and egg salad the manager had a mental breakdown saying I ordered it two days ago and that I'm not getting a refund and that I have to call the owner. I call owner, the owner tells me he is too busy and has to go hanging up on me, all this to avoid refunding me 18 dollars. I told the manager I was going to leave a review and she said "F you, you think we give a F about the reviews, we get money" l The manager is combative and deranged. Avoid at all costs.

Yelp
I dreamt about bagels and by the time I woke up, it was already 1PM on a Saturday. There was only one place I knew of in the area whose bagels had a reputation. I booked it to Deke's Bagels and walked in around 1:20 PM. I placed an order for The Niantic (Bacon, Ham, Two Eggs, Hash Brown, Cheddar and American Cheese, hold the cheese) on a Feta Spinach Artichoke bagel. Yes, that's a Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel. I paid and admired the remaining trays of bagels and pastries. There weren't many left. Deke's obviously very popular and you might not be left with many options if you walk in a half hour before closing on a Saturday. Suddenly, I was snapped out of my reverie-- good thing masks are still a thing and the staff couldn't see me salivating over the Dirt Bombs or the Cinnamon buns--and was told that they were Out. Of. Hash. Browns. Noooooooo. I had walked in for a bagel because I wanted a bagel sandwich because weekend mornings were made for bagel sandwiches, but the truth is that what I *really* wanted were hash browns IN my bagel sandwich. But unfortunately, I'd made the mistake of waltzing in a half hour before closing. The inner kid in me threw a temper tantrum, but the outer adult part of me settled for an extra egg in lieu of the hash browns. Nevertheless, by the time the piping hot paper bag was thrust into my hands, I was too hungry to care. There's no seating inside Deke's so I opted for car-eating. The next 2 minutes were pure bliss. The Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel is out of this world. In the end, I didn't even mind not having hash browns because the perfectly fried eggs, bacon, ham, and the Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel hit the spot and then some. Also, have I mentioned that this is the only place where I've ever seen a Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel? They actually put artichoke in the bagel! Amazing! If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. I will definitely be back next weekend, but I'll be sure to set an alarm for a half hour before their opening.

Yelp
Small bagel spot with a solid variety of bagels & a wide array of bagel sandwiches. All of the bagels are made fresh, and they are some of the best bagels I've had in CT. The bagels are fairly bread-y, in fact they're kind of taste like focaccia, but they still have a solid crunch Also have a solid variety of drinks & cream cheese options No seating 9

Cassidy O.

Yelp
BEST BAGELS EVER! Deke is the cutest sweetest man ever and makes our day every morning before school! I recommend everyone to go here! So many different bagel selections and toppings!

Claudia B.

Yelp
The bagels here are delicious, there's no doubt about that. There are many bagel options to choose from so there is something for everyone. However, I won't be coming back because of the service. The cashier was not friendly and asked us to repeat our order 3 times. She did the same to the other customers after us as well. It's too bad because the bagels here are very good.
google avatar

Susan V.

Yelp
Amazing bagels. Just tried for first time... coffee was not very hot but the bagel was perfect!

Daniel G.

Yelp
I live in NYC and these bagels would definitely rank among the better bagels I've tried in NYC. Bagels are light and tasty, cream cheese is likewise tasty and added in jus

Yelp
Oh wooow ok so my boyfriend loves bagels and when I saw that Deke's had opened, I knew we had to try. I swiftly instituted bagel Friday's at my household and off we went to investigate. My boyfriend and dad loved the bacon, egg and cheese bagel - and everything, obvi a classic. Got high reviews for the sun-dried tomato cream cheese, as well as the chipotle. But so my thing is that I like bagels ok, but I love pastries. And let me tell you, not a lot of places do both well. Deke's had quite the assortment. I tried the coffee cake and it was legit next level (lemon poppy cake was ok too). TL;DR great assortment of innovative flavors of both bagels and cream cheese. Impeccable pastries (must get coffee cake) and excellent service. #bagelfridays4lyfe

Yelp
Being a native LI, NYer ... It's extremely hard to find decent bagels up here. So glad I found this place over the summer and it opened up not far from me. You have to get there early esp. on the weekends or during the summer to get what you want. My favorite beagle is the jalapeno cheddar. They also make breakfast, sandwiches, wraps etc. They also carry a few "bakery" items none of which I have tried. Also, if you catch them at their right day or time they will sell a six pack of Dale bagels which I've never had them hard or not good. I also like their sesame. They have lots of interesting flavors as well. They carry flavored cream cheese too! Olive cream cheese is one they carry. They make all of them in house. When I went the other day they didn't have any left but the guy made it fresh for me. I was so excited. There's nowhere to sit in or outside. You basically go order & it's all take out. Do you like bagels? Definitely try it. There's also a location in Niantic. I can't stand bagels from a grocery store deli department & I don't like : Cohen's bagels either. If you're ordering a dozen or more, especially of a specific flavor, you can order online the day before. My only issue was I tried calling several times to order bagels and never got an answer. All staff is friendly and nice!

Grace C.

Yelp
there was a piece of plastic in my sandwich and they gave me a hard roll after saying I had a gluten allergy. then when I went to tell her about the error she said they don't have anything gluten free. gave my boyfriend the wrong sandwich. took 20 minutes to get two wrong orders. one of which wasn't edible. seriously disappointing and a waste of $30 for two sandwiches.
google avatar

Cole D.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised. Just grabbed a couple of bagels (everything, onion) and they were great. I was impressed with the variety of flavors. I can't wait to go back to try more.
google avatar

Dave P.

Yelp
It's a cute simple place with takeout only no indoor dining or nearby places for seating. The entrance has a nice ambiance. Bagels sandwiches are between 12-14$ per sandwich they don't list prices which is a little annoying. The bagel itself was not bad but a little tasteless I got the cheese bagel on shoreline sandwich which was okay.
google avatar

Corinne S.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way back from new haven and it quite literally took ~35 minutes for 2 of my friends and i to get breakfast and we were the one of the only people in the store. My friend specifically got a bagel and cream cheese which took about 20 minutes for them to make and the bagel was cold. They had to ask what our names were multiple times and kept getting confused on who they already gave food to. The cashier gives them the order name and they write it on a sticky note and make them as they go... pretty simple system but they kept making duplicates and messing up orders before they got to ours. I'm only giving 2 stars because the sandwich was good
google avatar

Doug F.

Yelp
Quite possibly one of the greatest breakfast sandwiches ever created by the hand of man, or, in this a case, woman. These folks know their way around a bagel making machine.

John P.

Yelp
Excellent bagels! But should offer much more sesame and poppy bagels, which are the most popular.
google avatar

Kasey B.

Yelp
I agree with and can corroborate some of the negative service aspects mentioned by Valerie R. and Luke P. I have been here a few times over the past two years and it has been the same across. The bagels are good and the staff are usually very nice, but they are a little slow and disorganized. They do not have a good system for tracking and updating their supplies for their in person and online orders. Two different times I had ordered online and arrived to have them let me know the orders were not done because they had run out of the bagels I had requested for my sandwiches. I picked different bagels, which was fine and I am fortunate enough to not be limited by allergies. I felt like it defeated the purpose of ordering ahead though because I then had to sit and wait for the sandwiches. This happened two different times and the last time I was there, a few months ago, I heard them calling a customer to let them know they needed to change their online order as they were out of the bagel requested in the order. Still seems to be an issue. I would be fine with all of this if their sandwiches were not so expensive. Their prices are higher than many of the other spots I have been too with the same or better quality bagels and promptness. I like the other Deke's location. I just hope they can pick up some of that efficiency.

Anom A.

Yelp
so I got a sesame seed bagel. the food was excellent except for the part where one bite of it or so had been soggy. In terms of service it was very fast and the people working were very nice. the ambiance of the place was additionally very cozy with linen lighting.

Yelp
Traveling through Connecticut and found this on the back route, sand which is big and delicious. Hot right off the press had to give it a few minutes to cool.

Yelp
Best bagels on the shoreline. They are absolutely delicious and the staff are always friendly. I'd highly recommend!!

Yelp
Great fresh bagels. Sausage and eggs were too overcooked. Excellent service. Clean shop. Just stick with the bagels.

Yelp
I was thrilled to learn about a new bagel shop in Guilford, so I just went recently and purchased four bagels. Honestly, mine was pretty good but unfortunately the rest weren't so good. I got a bagel with egg and tomato which was alright but my sister got a bagel with chive cream cheese and was pretty dry (didn't have much cc). Another one of our bagels was also skimpy. I spent about $35 for 4 bagels which I understand is more pricey because I got an egg sandwich but I still think it was a little expensive.

Virginia T.

Yelp
Very tasty! Bagels are fresh and seemed to be made from scratch. Seems like a popular spot to get a quick breakfast or brunch.

Bobby M.

Yelp
Best Bagels In Connecticut! Drove by this place a bunch of times on the Boston Post Road in Guilford. I finally decided to give it a try. The bagels are like nothing I've had before. They are amazing! Great flavors and so much lighter that you can eat two. Also, check out the toppings. These aren't just sprinkles of toppings. The everything bagel is more like EVERYTHING and the kitchen sink. If you haven't tried this place your missing out. Gonna try the Niantic store when I'm in the area.

Anthony A.

Yelp
Best bagel on the shoreline great service very friendly and very fast, great selection will never go elsewhere for a take out breakfast

Christine M.

Yelp
Fabulous, unique and other flavored bagels! This is my 2nd trip - because I wish I had bought more the 1st trip. Super nice and knowledgeable staff too!
google avatar

Casey G.

Yelp
Today was my first time at Deke's and it was exceptional! There were 3 of us and we ordered 3 sandwiches and 2 bagels to save for tomorrow. We received all we asked for and the owner, Deke, gave us a few extra bagels and a dirt bomb all at no charge - how thoughtful! The sandwiches were incredible and the flavors of bagels are so creative and awesome! This will definitely not be my last time at Deke's. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I'm a native New Yorker so I know bagels and I just had the best bagel I've ever had! Delicious ! Great coffee too. The best part was the service. So welcoming. Highly recommend!
