I dreamt about bagels and by the time I woke up, it was already 1PM on a Saturday. There was only one place I knew of in the area whose bagels had a reputation. I booked it to Deke's Bagels and walked in around 1:20 PM. I placed an order for The Niantic (Bacon, Ham, Two Eggs, Hash Brown, Cheddar and American Cheese, hold the cheese) on a Feta Spinach Artichoke bagel. Yes, that's a Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel. I paid and admired the remaining trays of bagels and pastries. There weren't many left. Deke's obviously very popular and you might not be left with many options if you walk in a half hour before closing on a Saturday.
Suddenly, I was snapped out of my reverie-- good thing masks are still a thing and the staff couldn't see me salivating over the Dirt Bombs or the Cinnamon buns--and was told that they were Out. Of. Hash. Browns.
Noooooooo. I had walked in for a bagel because I wanted a bagel sandwich because weekend mornings were made for bagel sandwiches, but the truth is that what I *really* wanted were hash browns IN my bagel sandwich. But unfortunately, I'd made the mistake of waltzing in a half hour before closing. The inner kid in me threw a temper tantrum, but the outer adult part of me settled for an extra egg in lieu of the hash browns.
Nevertheless, by the time the piping hot paper bag was thrust into my hands, I was too hungry to care. There's no seating inside Deke's so I opted for car-eating.
The next 2 minutes were pure bliss.
The Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel is out of this world. In the end, I didn't even mind not having hash browns because the perfectly fried eggs, bacon, ham, and the Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel hit the spot and then some. Also, have I mentioned that this is the only place where I've ever seen a Feta + Spinach + Artichoke bagel? They actually put artichoke in the bagel! Amazing!
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. I will definitely be back next weekend, but I'll be sure to set an alarm for a half hour before their opening.
