"Have a drink and watch the world go by No trip to Oaxaca is complete without spending at least a few hours sitting in one of the outdoor cafes around the Oaxaca city main square (the "Zocalo"). It's the perfect spot to watch the street scene: couples and families walking by, vendors selling their wares, shoeshine boys offering to polish your footwear to a gleam. Strolling musicians wander by and perform a few songs in exchange for a handful of pesos. Balloon sellers with their colorful merchandise suspended above and around them entice passing children. In the morning enjoy a frothy hot chocolate with pan de yema, a local bread made with egg yolk. In the afternoon, sip a cold beer and snack on some spicy peanuts or chapulines, spicy fried grasshoppers. Any time of day, this is a wonderful spot to enjoy the bustling but unhurried pace of life in Oaxaca."

Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins on What It Means to Open a Matriarchal Restaurant | Bon Appétit

"A newly opened San Diego restaurant led by chef Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins centers on matriarchal cooking that honors mothers and grandmothers and aims to preserve regional Mexican recipes. The menu is deeply personal — a reinterpretation of her aunt’s pozole recalls childhood nights cutting vegetables in a Guadalajara restaurant — and showcases hard-to-find Oaxacan ingredients sourced directly from women producers, including papilla mixe used in a tamal con mole poblano, pixtli to flavor the ice cream in the No Mamey’s dessert (served with almond brown butter cake and heirloom corn pinole crumb), rosita for a brunch chocoatole, and other native items like chicatanas, chile costeño and piñon rosita; the chef also purchased large quantities of a mole paste made by a mole-maker’s mother. The space features woven textiles from women in Oaxaca and Chiapas in the lounge, operates with the intensity of a new restaurant while remaining warm and familial (the chef’s daughter is often there), and foregrounds the preservation of culinary lineage even as some critics push back on the “matriarchal” label." - ByZan Romanoff

Google
Good food! I ordered omelette Oaxaca (the one with the grasshopper!) it’s actually very yummy! Great WiFi so I can google cryptic Spanish menu otherwise the data connection sucked there lol. I also loved the vibe here and huge list of choice!

Google
Classic restaurant serving a wide variety of food and drink options. We were there in December and the atmosphere was very festive due to it's being on the Zocalo.

Only stopped for a G&T, and to enjoy the vibe of the music. The waiters were plentiful, so I didn’t have to wait to be served, and the G&T was tasty. They also brought peanuts and pickles as tapas. The music was fantastic, and the people dancing in the street made my day.

We had breakfast here multiple times. We all loved our food and drinks. We always get Chilaquiles, as it’s our favourite breakfast food and Our kids dried the yoghurt and fruit one day and the portion were great and they loved it. The hot chocolate and lattes were delicious

A shame for such a beautiful city to have such a shitty restaurant! The food wasn’t amazing but the real bad point was the service.. The waitress was super rude, wouldn’t recommend, there’s way better places in Oaxaca!

Google
The food was surprisingly good, as good as the food at many more expensive restaurants north of the Zocalo. We had a tamal with chicken and mole (very good), sopa de azteca (pretty good, maybe not the best), and a chile relleno with picadillo (beef, also very good). To all of the people who complain about the service….just flag down any waiter or assistant and they’ll help you. A good place to watch people, etc. There are a few kids and people selling things, just say no thanks and they’ll move on - people have to make a living! Prices were pretty reasonable, less than other Zocalo restaurants- our lunch with beer was MN$250 each.

Google
This is a nice place to get a casual meal and drink. The club sandwich was okay… nothing outstanding but nothing wrong at all. The service was prompt and attentive. The atmosphere would have been better if not for the tents and protesters in the plaza and the numerous vendors soliciting table side. Still, a nice experience.

Yelp
Stopped here mostly for Banjo and we got dessert and something to drink. Kinda loud due to the Day of the Dead festivities. Service decent. Lots of people watching.

Yelp
We are seniors from the USA who do not speak Spanish. One of the very few restaurants that had an English menu in Oaxaca. We had Fajitas the first time. They were delicious. We had hamburgers the second time--just okay. We were tired the second time and wanted something quick.

Yelp
The cafe's tagline states "The best coffee in the southeast of Mexico." On that front, they at least get a passing grade: not the best sampled in the past few days, but acceptable. Continuing with the positives, the complimentary peanuts were the best item on the table. And the service, while a bit indifferent, was fine. On the "needs work" side, the beer was served cool but not cold. And as for the chicken wings... we sampled the mummified remains of eight unfortunate little chicken wings in a sweet mango-habanero sauce. On the plus side, they were absolutely, positively cooked through. Bottom line: if you must plop down at a table in a touristy restaurant surrounding the Zocalo, I'd pick a different one.

Yelp

Yelp
I ate here three days ago and became horribly ill. I ordered a tlayuda which came with lettuce. Because the restaurant seemed upscale and was in the center of the city I ate the lettuce. The next day I woke up feeling terrible and spent 16 hours in bed. I went to the restaurant yesterday to inform the manager, and I was told to come back tomorrow.

Yelp
Solid food for a touristy place. It's fun to sit and eat on the zócalo and people watch. You can say no thanks to the street vendors or also buy from them. Getting a pitcher of the aguas is a good choice is you are in a group.
