19 Bay Area Spots Where You Can Find Crispy, Cheesy Quesabirria Tacos

"Quesabirria is a relatively new offering for this taco catering business turned standalone restaurant, but it’s quickly become one of the go-to spots on the Peninsula for these Tijuana-style tacos — and it serves quesabirria-adjacent items too, like birria ramen and birria “pizza.” Call in to order; there’s also outdoor seating on the patio." - Luke Tsai

Google
Best burrito I’ve had in a while, super tasty . Their sauces are also really good and spicy. Totally recommend it!

Google
Wow!!! Look at the pictures! Ramen quesabirria on point 💯 Cozy Christmas vibes for the holiday season. Owner was really cool too. Spread the word about this new joint

Randall T.

Google
Solid average over priced meatless burrito. Lots of rice and cold 🌯 with lots of stale chips to chase it with. Salsa is bland. Big menu. Goat!! Mural is strange. Service fast. Not much parking on street. Probably not worth a return.

Jennifer C.

Google
Excellent quesabirria and quesadillas! Will definitely be coming back!

Google
Great food. Only one person on staff. She was nice. She was cook, cashier and server. Understand why tables were not cleaned. She was working like crazy. I will come again for quesobirria tacos!!!!! And ramen

elyne M.

Google
Food is really good, great customer service. The place is very welcoming.

Google
Omggggg... the birria soup is an experience. Ramen with birria!? And childhood dreams in a cup with mazapan latte... they are super nice and will explain the menu. I'm coming back!

Michael M.

Google
Was not thrilled with my meal. Coming from the eastcoast of Florida I was expecting betr flavor and quality. Quesoberria tocos seemed to be oil soaked. Very little cheese between the shells..Tortilla bar was different, but thought chips should be keep warm and fresh. Sorry but was not impressed

Yelp
We love all that Del Oro has to offer. Their servings are generous, the food always fresh and really great depth of flavour. Their Birria is particularly amazing - we love having it in all forms - ramen Birria, tacos, burritos etc. Glad to come here again and again!

Yelp
Del Oro Taqueria KNOWS flavor and they know how to cook up a tasty meal! They took over the location of a previous taqueria and while my heart hurt for a while at the loss... it has found new love in Del Oro. My fiancé and I came here one night about 50 mins to closing and was told it'd be about a 30+ min wait for food... we stayed and waited. We came this far, we weren't going to go home taco-less! I opted for their corn in a cup and a garlic shrimp burrito while my fiancé got 2 lengua tacos and 1 birria taco. The food did feel like a bit of a wait especially when you're hungry but we helped ourselves to the chip and salsa bar and bro, these chips (despite being out all day? Hours?) were still crispy and salted perfectly! The salsa they had with it was delicious. If I didn't order a burrito and corn.. I would've gladly ate my weight in chips and salsa. There's no words to be had. The meat in the tacos were tender. The service was friendly and personable. Del Oro, welcome and your presence is much appreciated.

Yelp
3 Regular Tacos Carnitas Asada Fish $15 and change Fish was a (1) frozen fish stick thrown on the griddle and cut up. When tasted away from the taco it had that previously frozen, cheap very fishy taste. PASS. Carnitas - plenty of protein on this taco, i just couldn't tell what that protein was. Had a tinge of vinegar. I decline to say it was carnitas (see photo). PASS. Asada - good portion of beef in the taco, but was underwhelmed with the flavoring. meh. The tacos were plated in a way that didn't allow for chips to go down on the plate and catch the drippings. It looked nice, and made grabbing the taco easy, but I found it in the way. The tortillas were slightly cooked under dry heat. Not sure how I feel about this. The chips and salsa bar was what saved them from 1 star. The spicy salsa had crema and it was only gringo spicy, VERY delicious. The mild sauce was very tomato but had the consistency of a marinara. The verde was also very good. The place is was empty when I walked in. Very clean. Nice murals. But the front door was open and it was freezing inside! I sat next the electric heater and felt almost no heat. I really felt bad for the guy behind the register, he was also the cook. (see sign in photos). He was a 1 man show. I was in the front of the line and 4 other behind me. It took me 30 minutes for 3 tacos. I really empathize for the guy, but owners need to do something here. It was too much to handle and they guy was circling the bowl.... Someone came in to help but it was after my wait.

Yelp
We picked up two burrito bowls for dinner. The quality and amount of food you get for the price is insane. Prices are better than any other Mexican place I've been to nearby and the portions are amazing. Service was extremely fast and they were very friendly. Parking is easy on the street as well and plenty of seating inside. This place will be a go to for me.
google avatar

J N.

Yelp
+Mexican ramen to my order, so clever! We were the last ones before closing and they did not rush us at all! Love the local ambiance.
google avatar

Aiza C.

Yelp
The tacos were pretty great, the price is ok, not a great sit down place! Very limited seating! great parking! The service is good, place is decently clean.
google avatar

Sabrina L.

Yelp
This is the best spot I've had in San Mateo! The food is so delicious! The staff is very friendly and welcoming! I definitely recommend this spot to anyone!!

Yelp
Alright, if you're ok with a super long wait time for your food, then this place is really really good. It was our second time ordering from here, and today I tried their super burrito with birria. So good! Husband got the birria quesadilla which was delicious too, and his spicy salsa was super spicy. Good thing I got the mild spicy. First time we came, the wait was maybe 30min, and we def saw people who had takeout orders but still wait after arriving. Today, we didn't pick up until 40min later, and even then, they told us another 10-15min. So, 55min from the time we placed an order?? That was a bit long esp since we had people over today too. Won't stop us from ordering in the future, but we def can't come back if we want our food faster!
google avatar

IM O.

Yelp
No one in front of me in line but after paying and waiting 15 minutes they said it would take another 10 minutes to make a burrito. Go away - let a competent business take over
google avatar

Pree K.

Yelp
Tasty food! Got fish tacos, which were good - it was fried fish, not grilled. The sauces were amazing. There were also self-serve house-made tortilla chips with a variety of salsas. The rice and refried beans that came with the taco plate were also delicious! I loved the decor honoring famous Latinos and Latinas!

Yelp
Service: kind staff, very slow service. They prep you in advance with a sign at the front saying they're understaffed, but they aren't kidding. Definitely not a quick grab and go spot. Ambiance: beautiful mural, but cleanliness can improve. Self service salsa bar is simple (chips, green sauce, spicy salsa, lime, jalepeno), but out of the 4 plates they had to grab from, 3 of them were dirty. Food: ultimately, this is what gave this the extra star. While waiting for the food, I thought this was a solid 3 - but the food was actually really good! We got a super burrito and a "taste of Mexico" taco platter and it was both filling and tasty. Total came to about $45, which was reasonable given that the burrito was very large/dense and the tacos were great as well. I'm all for supporting local businesses and 25th street in particular, and will be back in the future when I have a burrito craving!

Yelp
Del Oro Taqueria delivered some seriously tasty birria tacos. The flavors were on point, and the accompanying sauce was a game-changer, adding that extra punch. What stood out were their hot sauce options - a diverse selection that turned up the heat just right. The staff at Del Oro Taqueria deserves a shoutout for being awesome. Friendly, on top of things, and enhancing the overall experience. If you're on the lookout for a spot with killer birria tacos, a solid sauce game, and a cool vibe, this place is worth a visit. I'll definitely be swinging by for more.

Thuy L.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp. Decided to try it out. The food was a bit overpriced & it was just okay. There was only 1 cook & 1 server? I waited 40 mins for my food. When I was there, one of the cook's friends came in & ordered his food after me & got his food first. Kinda ridiculous. Probably won't be back.

Vijay ..

Yelp
Food and portion size is great. Wait time needs to improve a bit. If you're ready to wait for sometime then it's worth it.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
Wife and I were walking around the area and stumbled upon this spot. I got the shredded chicken tacos and she got the carne asada tacos. They were AMAZING. This is definitely the best taqueria in the area and we both highly recommend it!
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
I got the Birria quesadilla and it was delicious!! It had a good meat to cheese ratio and the sauce had a lot of flavor. I also got the horchata and thought it was just okay. The service was great, all of the waitstaff were very friendly. I also liked that they had a salsa and lime bar. I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Paula J.

Yelp
Quesabirria Tacos were fireeee! We also ordered a birria burrito and that was really good too! Everything tastes fresh and made with love. 5-stars most def! Thank you!
google avatar

Melissa J.

Yelp
My sister invited me to a late lunch here. We ordered the beef quesabirrias with consume. One strawberry horchata and a strawberry lemonade and a Flan. Ok so you know it's good when you can just drink the beef consume on its own. If you know , the. You know that just says it all. The quesabirrias are well served with a good amount of beef and cheese. The tortilla is crispy and doesn't break apart and become soggy. Even dipped in the consume the tortilla continues to have a slight crunch to it. Personally I like my quesabirrias like this. The meat is soft and exceptionally flavored. You can taste the quality of the food served here. The strawberry horchata was awesome, you could taste the freshness of the drink. Didn't look bright pink as some places I've tried before. The flan here was the best , did not have that egg smell to it, was nice an dense. Del Oro Taqueria is a nice small quaint restaurant. The service is top notch because the owner of the restaurant is attending his guests. If you are in San Mateo and would like to try some quesabirrias , you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Best Mexican spot I've had in the Bay, food was cooked after we ordered and it was fresh! Got the California burrito bowl, garlic chicken, and birria tacos, all great flavors, meat was tender, I can't wait to come back and try something new. Owner and his wife were super friendly, place was clean, good atmosphere and music.

Yelp
Somewhat newer spot in this shopping area - I REALLY hope this spot survives for a long time because I love their food!!!! As someone who eats tacos and different types of Mexican food all the time everywhere (lots of LA, MIA, TX, Bay Area, CDMX tacos, tortas, my friend's parents cooking, etc), this place is very very solid. The meats / fish are all flavorful and cooked perfectly, and this was not my first trip here. I did pickup the first time, and their DoorDash menu is a bit confusing because it shows photos of two tacos, but you only get one. They are not the quickest if you order 5 different meats, but again, I don't care. I will wait I can usually tell when a spot is run by business people vs people who are the cooks. My hunch is this spot is run by the people who cook (re not perfect operationally with confusing DoorDash / slightly confused cashier), but it doesn't matter to me because it is delicious. Also we had a lot of fun staring at the mural while eating. I loved all of the things we ordered - will be returning.
google avatar

Jon A.

Yelp
$80 for 4 burritos is outrageous. The amount of salt killed us, all of us needed major water, even downed liquid IV packets. Nobody finished half of their burrito. Very long wait, 37 MINUTES! The chips were hard and salty. Sad.
google avatar

Eva S.

Yelp
Food is really good and plentiful! Burritos are giant and very tasty. We have tried the veggie burritos only, they have a chile relleno twist on the veggie burrito that I loved. I don't eat meat but their meat options would likely be good too. Chips are also great, crispy and they taste fresh. The place is small but it's nice to sit here, if you like the casual vibe. People are very warm and nice. As other people said service is slow but still giving 5 stars because of the other positive points. I hope they can work on the service speed but in the mean time order ahead or don't go there if you are in a rush.

Yelp
Stopped by to find a new taco spot since we're newer to the area. Would absolutely recommend Del Oro! The service was so friendly and gave helpful suggestions. The birria tacos were on point but my unexpected favorite was the fish taco which was recommended by who we later found out was the owner. It's a great local spot with a really vast menu, chips and salsa bar, and quality tacos. We will definitely be back to try out other menu items. We ordered 3 tacos each and was so full by the end of the 2nd taco.

Yelp
We came here as a last minute lunch on a Saturday. Complains: They were extremely short staffed so they said it would take them 45 mins to make our food. That's fine. Tables were extremely dirty when we came to them, but were cleaned once requested. Chips are packed in paper bags and salsas are in plastic containers. The lady that took our order looked like she was in a rush to take our order. Bathrooms are clean. 2.5 out of 5 stars Food: The quesabirra tacos are good and the tapotio noodles are really good. The chile relleno isn't good without some salsa. The salsa and chips are good too. 4 out of 5 stars Drinks: The horchata is not as good as expected especially since we asked for it without ice. :') The mango drink is pretty good. 3 out of 5 stars Overall, 3.5 out of 5 stars. I don't think we are coming back. Eating there at least. Pickup To- go might be fine though.

Yelp
This is kind of my new goto for Mexican as it's close and they have great food. Their birria tacos are great along with their quesadillas. And they have proper nachos that are stacked - ie. unlike some other places that give you a stack of empty chips at the bottom with only toppings on top, del Oros nachos are legit and cover almost all chips. Plus extra points for it being a local, family run place... however this does also make them slow sometimes! Still giving 5 stars.

Yelp
This restaurant is located a few blocks from the San Mateo mall. The ambiance is very casual and the walls are colorful and full of life to represent the culture. Here is what I ordered: 1 Sope de asada - deep fried masa with refried beans, steak and topped with lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream cheese and salsa. I love it! The masa was crunchy and it had a perfect amount of toppings for each bite. My rating: 10 out of 10 1 Birria Taco - a crunchy tortilla dipped in birria broth, stewed meat and cheese. Served with a yummy stewed broth! I loved this one! It was perfect. My rating: 10 out of 10 1 Corn in a cup: corn with mayonnaise & hot Cheeto dust. I really enjoyed this! The amount they serve is totally worth it as they don't skimp like other places. My rating: 10 out of 10 The service: it was a busy night and only two women working the kitchen and the cashier at the same time ! You can tell this place is family owned. They lacked a little warmth in my opinion and they should have someone just dedicated to cashiering to be more attentive but I can understand them! I was really confused about the tortilla chip/salsa bar as it's hidden so I really wish they would have explained how that worked while placing my order. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Bert K.

Yelp
It's hard to find a good Chile relleno. This place has a quality Chile relleno: light, fluffy, not oily, with a nice cheese inside. The rice was good tasting too and the beans were ok too. Decor: fine. It's a clean place with quality service.

Lucia L.

Yelp
Good ass quesabirrias!!! Love them, super yummy and with lots of meat. Their consome is amazing too! Amazing service, its always a pleasure to come and spend my lunch hour here.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
If you like Mexican food and are near this area, I highly recommend you give Taqueria del Oro a try. Their quesabirrias are outstanding--This Mexican lady definitely approves!
google avatar

Barbara C.

Yelp
Definitely the best place to get birria tacos and quesadillas. I enjoyed the homemade flan also. The consommé was a bit salty for my taste but others may enjoy it. The self-serve salsa bar and chips were also tasty. I'm definitely coming back!!
google avatar

Janelle D.

Yelp
The best birria in the San Mateo area. Ordered the quesabirria combo and birria quesadilla. It did not disappoint. Never had a go to mexican spot here in San Mateo till this place. I will definitely come back to try everything else. Amazing service and staff, feels like family. I don't have to go to san jose or the city to get my birria fix any longer! Also they do disclose the wait time might be long with the short staff but I think it is totally worth the wait. Maybe call ahead! Support this amazing place! Will definitely recommend to everyone i know if theyre in town!

Jeffrey O.

Yelp
The birria burrito is amazing. The tacos were also amazing. Highly recommend coming here if you want great Mexican food

Tom T.

Yelp
Just like other reviews I agree that the beef sucks. The meet tasted old and it was extremely greasy. The salsas were also not good. And extremely overpriced for what it is. Only giving it two stars because I understand they are extremely understaffed and working extra hard. But they need to really get better ingredients. Until then I'm not going back.

Teresa M.

Yelp
Fresh, good, take time because the owner told us they make each food in the moment that's why the rice is fluffy and fresh. No other places you can find like this rice!! Tacos are really delicious. Nice and attentive costumer service.
google avatar

Kristel T.

Yelp
Very poor beef quality. Ramen was very soggy, noodles were mush, and had a weird flavor. Chile relleno tasted like old burnt oil. Food took forever to come out and there was only one other party already eating at the place. Only 2 people were working at the time we dined. They weren't very helpful and were impatient when asked for assistance; i.e., turning on heat lamps and to go containers. The place was not very inviting. Space heaters were in the way, mural was creepy - look at the lady's hands!!! And kitchen was extremely disorganized. Not even sure if the salsas were in chilled containers. Sorry but I've had way better birria elsewhere and this place is a shame being in California.

Teddy T.

Yelp
Burritos are super good. Obsessed with their rice. Everything we've gotten did not disappoint
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
The birria tacos were good, and we would go back for the tacos alone. The beans and rice were so bad. No seasoning, no flavor. They had a salsa bar that left a lot to be desired. Chips were way over salted, and we had to ask for more salsa. There were no signs indicating spice level. The place was empty, and our order took a long time. Workers were not friendly. There are a couple places with way better food, but this place is so close to home and the tacos were decent and fairly priced.
google avatar

Billy H.

Yelp
I've driven past this area frequently and have never tried this place. It has great reviews on delivery apps so I decided to stop in and give it a try. The inside was extremely clean and modern looking. They have these cute sombrero light fixtures and a beautifully painted mural with different famous Latin artists from different times, like a Mexican last supper. They have a big tv playing popular music in Spanish, which really adds to the vibe of the place. I was greeted by the woman working the front, who is one of the owners. She was extremely sweet and personable. Customer service and appearance alone, this place is a 10/10. I ordered a meat lovers burrito to go. The burrito was MASSIVE. As long as my forearm and stuffed full. Everything tasted fresh and the birria was extremely tender. I will absolutely be back or order delivery to try other things.
google avatar

Bella L.

Yelp
Generous customer service! The Interior and exterior of the restaurant are well designed with fun decorations. I always get their juicy chicken burritos and quesadillas that come in large portion sizes .
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
New favorite Taqueria on the entire Peninsula. The Ques Birria Tacos are absolutely delicious. Not to mention the quality authentic carnitas. Super clean and the bathroom is adorned better then my own. Lol. Extremely friendly staff. Cleanest Chip and salsa bar I've seen. And the mural on the wall is brilliant. I'll be back.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This place recently opened up and WOW its delicious! We got the burritos, chips and homemade salsa the first time then came back for the shrimp nachos. Everything is fresh, good size portions and the flavors are awesome. They are short on staff so you need to be patient if it take a little while for your food but so so worth it. I'm excited to have another mom and pop business in the neighborhood and hope they succeed. If you're close by, come show them some love.
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
Just opened. My burrito for $16 should have been exceptional. Lotsa competition on the Peninsula. At least I tried.
google avatar

Virgil A.

Yelp
Great mex restaurant at 25th Ave. I like their burrito and chips are free with 3 dips.

Ariane D.

Yelp
Been here 5 times now. Amazing food, 5 star service. Clean and nice interior. I love supporting family-owned/run small businesses like this one. Will be back again and again.

Rubi B.

Yelp
I came here for the reviews but it was a complete disappointment. My husband and I had regular tacos the meat was greasy, tortillas had a bad taste and who says that normally about tortillas and the salsa had no flavor. The tacos had plenty of meat which would be a good if the meat was good. I never write reviews and this one I had to on how disappointed I was.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing. My wife and I just were walking the block and this place caught our eye. Good thing we decided to give it a try. My wife had a super burrito bowl with grilled chicken. I had the garlic steak burrito and a pineapple agua Fresca. All of the ingredients were really fresh and the plates were presented well. The service was great and everyone was extremely friendly. Definitely worth a try if you haven't already. We will definitely be back. Oh yeah, the flan was really good too!

Jason H.

Yelp
It's best taqueria I've been to in the area. The food was really good and the service was really nice.

Robert M.

Yelp
I grubhub'd their Birria quesadilla.....ohhhhh wow. Suavacito and now this place. You must order it.
google avatar

Renee C.

Yelp
We arrived just as they were closing but they welcomed us in and graciously served us without feeling rushed. We got five different varieties of tacos, all good - generously filled, fresh tasting ingredients. The tortillas tasted homemade, and they were presented nicely in little taco stands. Very easy street parking with a great neighborhood feel. There were just two of of, but definitely had a family vibe and would be a great place to come with kids. Will go back next time a taco craving hits. A nice option for not having to deal with downtown parking.

Jesse M.

Yelp
I had to review this place. The good yelp rating is misleading. The wait time is long, the customer service is horrible, and the food is sucks. No flavor. I got the birria burrito and it was disappointing especially considering the price. I won't be back.
