D'Elia's Grinders

We have a great and delicious 😋 cheese steak sub. and a hot pastrami, and you won't regret it, they are huge subs, 1 can feed up to 2 or 3 people. but if they are good eaters maybe, a whole sub can feed up to 2 people. even dough i feel that my cheese steak need it a little bit of seasoning or salt. . but good subs. 😆

Ordered a turkey bacon 🥓 avocado 🥑 sandwich 🥪 and a side of macaroni salad waited about 15 minutes for the sandwich ( it was ok ) looked really big but it was just the bread 🥖 not much bacon 🥓 or avocado 🥑 on the sandwich. Macaroni salad was good ( had a pickle and garlic taste ) not my favorite but it was good also got a soda total $28.67 way too much for a sandwich meal

The guy who took my order was very dry Like he didn’t even wanna be there. You could tell by the way he was stacking the soda case. I ordered the fuego cheesesteak which was THEE MOST FLAVORLESS “CHEESESTEAK” I’ve ever had in my life. For $20 a sandwich you’d think the portion size would be decent. They’re very skimpy!! The bread is apparently their “crunchy Italian” AKA STALE ITALIAN BREAD. It’s barely soft, it falls apart and flakes all over the place. If you don’t eat the sandwich while it’s hot you’ll be coming back to crouton bread later. The steak was so chewy and the sandwich was so bland despite the “chipotle mayo” it held no flavor whatsoever I had them make my sandwich over becuhs i didn’t like how HARD the bread was. Just to have them give me another sandwich just as hard. honestly I left extremely disappointed and I’ll never return. Don’t believe the hype in these reviews. Overpriced mediocre sandwiches with bare minimum customer service

Google
First off I notices the place was a little dirty. Bussing not done, trash on floor, and trash can full. Second, I ordered what the worker suggested as their best selling grinder. I was not asked if I wanted to add anything to the grinder. I was unaware that I had to ask for onions, pickles, chilies...ect.. The grinder was good, but it needs flavor. Salt and pepper, and the oil, soybean oil which is specified on the menu, was not seasoned either. It could of been a great grinder if a proper seasoned olive oil and vinegar was offered. I probably will continue to make my own grinders at home and not return here. Disappointed since so many rave about this place and lack taste buds. Perhaps changes have occurred over time.

My dad brought me here to eat for the first time. They have a nice menu for sandwiches, which are huge. The bread is hard and a challenge to eat but delicious. The fries are good and I enjoyed the meal. I liked that they had a person to make sure the dining area was clean for people to eat in.

Google
I am a value-based buyer. Meaning when I pay $25 for a sandwich, I am hoping it is unbelievable. This was entirely believable. I’m glad to see that they make good jobs for young people and pleased to see it is crowded, popular. Dollars are getting tighter, times are getting harder. Maybe I just don’t get it and it’s me. It’s probably me.

Google
So many people I know, love this place and don't get me wrong-the food is fresh and tastes great. My only gripe is that I'm not a fan of the bread, it's too flaky for my taste. I noticed that I wasn't the only one dropping crumbs everwhere. People I went with explained that D'Elia's is known for their bread... it just wasn't favorite. If you love deli style sandwiches though, definitely check this place out!

Alex R.

Google
The vibe of this restaurant feels dead. I walked in and was greeted very coldly. In addition, there was 5 females all under the age of 21 in the back making my sandwich. Why would they have 5 young people who look like they are barely old enough to graduate high school for one sandwich that had more lettuce and tomato than meat. No lie the turkey sandwich i bought had less than 1/16th of an inch of meat and the bread taste different? Accordingly, I reviewed other reviews and the bread is in fact different.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a little kid riding in the car with mom or dad, on the way to "Dee-ya's" (it's De-LEE-ah, by the way). My favorites are the cold roast beef grinder and the meatball grinder, but almost everything is good. They also make the best fries in town. The only thing I haven't enjoyed in the past few years was the BBQ beef. It used to be my favorite back in the day when I remember it as sort of a shredded pot roast simmered in BBQ sauce. However, the last time I ordered it, it was just finely chopped deli beef tossed in a loose BBQ sauce. I wouldn't order that again. Service is usually friendly and the restaurant is clean. These days, driving to either location means going way on the other side of town, but it's always worth the drive when I get a craving for that crispy, messy bread full of goodness.

Cheyenne M.

Yelp
The bread is so old and hard that it fell apart when I took my first bite. It was also 70% lettuce. The cashier was very nice and accommodating. The service is great.

Yelp
Visited years ago and wanted to stop in again. This classic grinder shop has indoor or patio seating areas. Parking right in front. The toasty bread held a nice amount of veggies great when you're looking for a classic. Service was great and wait time minimal. Order at the counter and pick up. Right off university down the way from UCR.

Yelp
Decided to redeem my bday cash with a D' Sicilian, grinder was basically half priced. It was Sunday at 11:30 am. Smooth transaction and while I waited (less than 10 minutes) I noticed great staffing, getting ready for the upcoming rush. Although the place was quiet, customer facing employees should at least appear busy. They were pleasant and helpful, I even bought a 70th t-shirt. The discounts and specials keep me coming back, not to mention the bread! It's the bread!
google avatar

Adriane

Yelp
The bread is really good tasting, but it gets everywhere when you eat. Even after shaking my clothes off I still ended up getting bread crumbs in my car. Many of the servers can be very nice, but some of them are a little rude. You'll either get your food very fast, or you'll be stuck waiting for way too long. Make sure to always double check your order since they sometimes forget items when bagging up your order, especially hot items. Then there is the prices vs the portions you get being disproportionate. There's not a lot of meat in the regular sandwiches, but if you put in every free veggie they offer it does kind of even out. Just make sure to get extra oil if you do add the sprouts. Ultimately, this is a place to go to for a little bite of nostalgia. Just be very careful of the area its in, especially at night.

Yelp
If you like meatball sandwiches, you would love this one. It's one of the best in town. I've been coming here for the past 15 years.

Yelp
I have been going to D'Elias for 55 of my 60 years and it's the same as it was back in the day...the best Grinders around always fresh always good and you won't get bread like this anywhere...Service is always AAA+++ and the place is always clean...The Double Down whole ham grinder is my go to grinder but all the sandwiches are excellent especially the beef dip and meatballs sandwich...and the burgers are your old school flavorful burgers...Thank You D'Elias for so many years of excellent grinders...I grew up near D'Elias but now live in San Francisco for 30 years and come down once a month to see family and we always take a trip or two to get grinders. Just had a grinder today and will be back soon

Yelp
Fries! Does everyone know that they have the best shoestring fries? Long, golden, crispy. None better. Been enjoying the grinders since the 1960's.

Joyce G.

Yelp
The sandwich was great. The food was great the new menu was better than is was when I was working nearby for years.
google avatar

Lynette G.

Yelp
We drove 35 miles just to have there Grinders. Tasted absolutely delicious. We stayed and ate on property to be able to enjoy the full sandwich .

Yelp
Just wanted some sort of sub and remembered about this place and they have another location as well. Been to the other one and never to this one tho. Kinda felt bad cuz I got a call as we were ordering. But girl was informative of the menu. Seemed more like just order and pay vibe but hey I am here to just order and pay lolz. The inside was pretty specious compared to other the location. Kinda weird they had some booths and no tables but serves good space to wait. Ahahahahaha The real review here it is: Pastrami 8/10 not really for me tbh but I do love pickles soooo heyyyyy maybe not for me but it's for you. But my brother in law and sister ate a big fam. Philly D'fuego 9/10 it was good but needed more spice for me. Girl said it was spicy and ppl complained it was spicy. But not spicy amount for me ahahahahh. It ain't spicy if it doesn't make me cry but def has potential?!! Would order again with some extra sauce Fries 1000/10 everyone's loves them!!! Best fries in Riverside Overall all good was good. Maybe a bit in the pricier side but then also big sizes imo.

Yelp
We have always had good service! Today did not fail. Thank you one of our fave's is Turkey with Avacado, light oil, & mayo

google avatar

Garen A.

Yelp
Decided to try this place while I was in town. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Sandwiches are decent... they give you a ton of options to select from when you order online.

Nicole C.

Yelp
Overpriced sandwich, meat to bread ratio sucks hardly had any meat in it. Service was friendly when ordering but my order slow coming out.
google avatar

Tiesh T.

Yelp
The service workers were very friendly and the sandwich is good, the only thing is the price... $27 for a full sandwich with steak and cheese is a bit much but the sandwich was good
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Bread was to heard not soft at all. Dry sandwich Org Italian. Pastrami sandwich too fatty and taste like your eating straight grease. Gave this place a second shot and again was very disappointed. $47 for two ft longs & 2 drinks.
google avatar

Manuel B.

Yelp
The food is always excellent, one of their Specialties are there many sandwiches they offer. The staff are kind and accommodating

Jack S.

Yelp
D'Elia's is an icon in Riverside. Not to knock the Van Buren location, but University is where it's at. It's the location of my childhood. I've been coming here since I was kid, I'm near 50 now. (I'd ditch school to come eat here in high school) The grinders are always on point and never have I had a bad experience here. As long as they stay in business, they will always get my money!
google avatar

Yelp
Best grinders in riverside !!! Great customer service restaurant has upgraded the inside their are nice booths that you can sit and feel comfortable plenty of space very clean !! Food was out quick and the and best thing of all the crunchy bread that is what makes this the best sandwich /grinder for me !! I'm Italian so I know a good grinder and it all starts with the bread ! This has and always will be my on stop shop before heading back home to San Francisco! Live this place don't ever change the menu!
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
I ordered the Cuban sandwich for the first time and it was AMAZING. I I loved all the flavors. It was packed as well so the ambiance was good and the girl that helped me, Delilah, was very kind asking me if I needed any side condiments or anything. Will be back again
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
I have been coming here since the 80's and it's still just as good. I remember when D'Elias was just a walk-up window and the lines would be long!! I don't get to Riverside as much anymore, but when we are near we have to stop and get these unique grinders. The bread is something you can't get anywhere else. Flaky ,crispy on the outside, soft where you need it and all the flavor of an italian sub inside . Yes Please!!
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
I grew up in the IE, and we always went to a place in Ontario called Grinder Haven. Growing up with them, no other grinder, hoagie, or submarine sandwich has ever compared. Sadly, they went out of business many years ago. I had heard rumor that D'Elis's was owned by one of the same families, so set out on a quest to try them... I was NOT disappointed! The fresh baked bread was just as I remembered & my taste buds were singing. Can't wait till I'm passing through again. I know where I'll be!
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
As usual, grinders are always excellent. The good news, no homeless and the booths are back for sitting
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
We live in Montana so just passing through on vacation. The capicola grinder was delicious just like I remember having gone there since the 60's. Service was great. Prices have changed, obviously. Whenever we pass by Riverside we stop at D'Elia's. I highly recommend this eatery.

Yelp
Stopped in for the monthly Jeep night and met with a fine gathering of like minded folks in the parking lot, along with the owner. Once inside, you could see that this establishment has quite the following. Ordering went smoothly and there were plenty of selections to choose from, I picked the Sicilian sandwich with fries and a drink. The sandwich was very tasty and the bread roll (freshly made) was the crowning glory...Im definitely trying the pastrami next time, I hear it's amazing.

Nick S.

Yelp
Turkey sandwich has ONE PIECE of meat on one side only. It's all bread at a ridiculous price.
google avatar

Yvette D.

Yelp
Heard great things about this place and put it on my list to try when I passed through the area.... Well, that day finally came! I'm a sucker for an Italian Sub so I got the Italian Grinder! I'm always on the hunt for a great sandwich joint and I heard the bread was really great here so I was excited to try it. It was definitely tasty! They are not stingy with the meat and cheese... I love that! The bread was good, not oh my goodness great, but I'm not complaining at all. Because of reading reviews I don't know what I was expecting! Lol I absolutely recommend this place! The young guy that helped me was super friendly and very helpful as I told him it was my first time in. The decor is nothing fancy. Perfect lunch spot if you're in the mood for a sandwich!
google avatar

Yelp
I grew up in Rubidoux as my Dad was first a teacher at Jurupa Jr. High way back in the 60's and then a Counselor at Mission Jr. High for the next 40 something year's of his work life until his retirement. We all started going to D'Elia's original grinder shop in Rubidoux known with the family name, "Perrone's". We love their grinders which ever name they use. Always the Best!

Mort Goldberg T.

Yelp
Gotta agree with the other 1* reviews on here. As I unwrapped my turkey club this review starting rolling through my head. You have got to be kidding me. There was like one slice of turkey a single slice of bacon and 4 inches of bread. This was my first and you guessed it, last visit. No bro. I'm writing this 10 hours after I opened the sandwich in my car, to start eating. It was during my lunch break so I just now came here to read the reviews. I was wondering if I was going to see anyone complaining about the lack of meat. Yep.
google avatar

Yelp
We've been getting grinders from this place forever... the food is always delicious!!!
google avatar

Hector M.

Yelp
I haven't posted in a while. On Thursday went to get dinner and I noticed that the dining area has been upgreated with new seats and tables. Although my dinner was to go. For a weekend visit when I crave another Grinder with fries and a drink. I'll dine in and sit on the new tables. Thank you.

Melissa H.

Yelp
My husband grew up in Riverside , CA and his father was the principal at the school across the street. Everytime we visit the community we try to fit in a lunch at this special spot. Same wonderful sandwiches, great service and beautiful place for fun casual dining.
google avatar

Mariano S.

Yelp
Once again the capicola grinder was on point and the service was excellent as always. Thank you so much.

Love B.

Yelp
Been going to Delia's since I was a little girl and they were a literally sandwich stand. Today was greeted by the rudest worker, Destiny. She literally acted like she was too busy to be kind or respectful and like we should be privileged to have her help us! Very disappointed to see this once friendly atmosphere turned into a bunch or workers who act like they are doing you a favor! Hopefully they will renew the customer service they once had.
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
Same as I remember when I lived in Riverside many years ago. Maybe a bit light on meat and veggies but same delicious bread. On team oil and dried pepper flakes. YUM! Going back for another before heading home to Northern CA. Ambiance, appears clean, locked bathrooms with combo so also clean. Staff friendly. Food is the reason to be there-GREAT!
google avatar

Marci M.

Yelp
There is nothing like a D'Elias Grinder, they have been a staple in Riverside since 1953! I remember eating these as a little girl, we insisted on getting them every time we went out to my grandmother's house (and we currently still stop EVERY time we go out to the desert or to Vegas or really for no reason at all we just drive out on a random Sunday) We can't stay away! They still taste exactly as I remember 40ish years ago... and that is one of the best things about D'Elias, they literally have not changed the quality or the taste over the years. You know exactly what to expect and it always tastes the same... Oh and I CAN confidentially confirm... it really IS the bread! (p.s. Have patience when you go here, the in-restaurant service is usually always slow. Sometimes it's because they get a LOT of takeout orders (catering and food delivery services like door dash etc... and a lot of phone in orders) and unfortunately sometimes it's slow because they have a bunch of high school aged kids (that lack proper management) and stand around and chit chat... It is what it is and it's been like that for the last few years... we know it and we expect it. The good thing is, the food is still GREAT even if you have to wait longer than you should!)

James C.

Yelp
Thank you University location. They honored the Rain 50 coupon when it was cloudy only. Made my Sunday
google avatar

Barry F.

Yelp
I ordered thru door dash a roast beef dip au jus sandwich with light mayo and it came disassembled no mayo. Plenty of fries. Bread was too crusty and beef lacked flavor. Beef au jus sauce came open and was everywhere (not packed right or handled properly. Door dash driver was different from who was assigned.

Yelp
First time coming here I'm sorry, but the customer service was not good. I think they were upset cause we got there an hour before closing so they were not really greeting us so great. I heard they're known for the bread, but I'm sorry not for me. It was too hard. Crumbs fell all over the place. Couldn't really enjoy it. and then we order a cheeseburger too and the burgers were burnt not a very good pleasant experience atmosphere was pretty good. It is a big spot. I heard it gets really packed, but like I said, I was there an hour before closing and I heard a lot of good things about this place but I'm sorry it's just not for me

Francisca A.

Yelp
Grinders are still the best in town. Didn't take long for my order and the they are friendly
google avatar

Lili L.

Yelp
It has been a few years since I've been here. It is still just as good. I appreciate the longtime tradition this establishment continues to carry on. It brings back memories of my Dad taking us for a drive & ending up here. What a treat!
google avatar

Raquel M.

Yelp
I have loved D'Elias's Grinders for years. The ham grinder with extra oil and crushed peppers is my go to order. Recently I started adding cucumbers, sprouts, and bell pepper to my grinder, it tastes great with the ham and i highly recommend it. The macaroni salad is very tasty, refreshing and pairs wonderfully with a grinder. I like to order ahead of time and Pick up my order. It saves me a lot of time and is very convenient.

Helen H.

Yelp
My grandmother who is now 92 took me here 30 years ago and I had my first grinder. She would tell me about how when she first started going here she would buy a grinder for 35 cents. Growing up it was always a treat to go to D'Elia's. I no longer live in Southern California but every time I am remotely close, my family swings by and grabs a grinder. It is by far the best sandwich we have ever had. The thin shaven lettuce, fresh deli meat & cheese, which is the perfect ratio or meat to cheese, and the freshest most delicious bread. D'Elia's is not only delicious but also a forever cherished memory.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
The sandwiches are the best tasting grinders I have ever had. What makes them so good? The rolls that they use. Very crusty on the outside but soft inside. Very good.
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
The food was fresh, tasty, and the help at the counter was very friendly SMS efficient.
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
I love D'Elia's ham grinder's and fries so good. The grinders are a love or hate because of the bread it is crunchy which I love. It has remained the same over the last 20 years always good. I eat here at least 3xs a month and never get tired of it. I recommend you give it a try.
