Where to Eat Seal Meat in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"One of a few shops around town selling seal, this poissonnerie in the Jean-Talon market is a great source for all sorts of seafoods, particularly those sourced from Quebec’s Gaspésie region. While it’s not a restaurant (although it does sell some ready-to-eat options), connoisseurs can find seal meat here for preparation at home, although it’s best to ask for some advice on how to prepare it if you’re unfamiliar." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Lots of smoked fish you can sample. We got a bit of everything to try. They also have breaded cod and breaded shrimp in a stand more towards the center that we didn’t try.

When I’m in JTM and have an urge for fresh fish, this fishmonger never disappoints. Yesterday bought some super fresh halibut upon asking which to buy - salmon or halibut. He said just received the fresh halibut and, simply prepared it was succulent and delicious. The kind lady behind the cash always has a warm greeting (yesterday was … haven’t seen you in a while, how are you?) and a smile!

The shrimp roll was delicious and the flavours very dynamic. When you look closely at the ingredients within the sauce you can see the intricacies of the recipe. Very vibrant taste which exceeded our expectations!

Again for my non-French speaking folks, the name Delices De La Mer Poissonnerie Gaspesienne” means “Delights from the sea Gaspesian fish shop”. We didn’t experience any rudeness from the staff, infact they were nice trying to explain things in English even when they are native French speakers. A very nice welcoming and inclusive gesture. Had the smoked cod with tartare sauce and was it good, fresh tasty and also inexpensive at $6. Light snack perfect !

The weekends mean warm, crispy, juicy shrimp at this little counter 🤩 truly the best shrimp bite you can have, impossible to snap a pic before digging in!

Yelp
Lobster roll at the Jean-Talon Market in Montreal. I was trying to get it from another store at the dead corner of the market. Unfortunately, they don't have it until late April. So I found this one. Okay portion at this price, not much surprises. Would have been better if it came with more mayo/ sauce with the lobster. It was a bit dry. Okay amount of shredded lobster. Roll was toasted to good crispiness. Come back again in the future? Meh...

Yelp
Had to try some lobster while at the Jean Talon Market. Their lobster roll has grainy mustard in it. Interesting take. The French Canadians love their mustard! Overall it was a solid lobster roll and at a reasonable price.

Yelp
This small shop in the T of Jean Talon Market has smoked fish so good it's made it's way into all of my family traditions and holidays - and not just on the Danish side where smoked fish is required by law. There's smoked salmon and then there's salmon caught in the Gaspesie and smoked "a l'ancienne" - outdoors over a fire by 17thC coureurs de bois no doubt, the manliest of men. Don't miss the small pile of bite-sized glazed-looking salmon lovelies in the back of the glass display: these are smoked with Maple and they are not sweet exactly, they are just... perfection. The upbeat, bilingual staff will gladly vacuum seal your fish for you if you're traveling too!
