19 Excellent Sandwich Shops to Try in Portland

"This Southeast Division food cart has become a favorite among East Coast expats craving old-school Italian grinders, hoagie rolls stretched wide and stuffed with breaded chicken cutlets, pork-and-beef meatballs, or thinly sliced eggplant. The cart’s Italian cold cut sub, however, is a thing of beauty, layers of ham, pepperoni, salami, and coppa topped with a pile of house giardiniera, hot peppers, shredded lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and the customary oil and vinegar." - Alex Frane, Janey Wong

Seriously though, a Stealy on the back of the truck hooked me right in. Ruben is an old school east coaster. Sandwiches the way they should be. Come on over to the Lents Park area in SE Portland from 1-6 today, Saturday, June 8. There's live music, Brass Bands I believe, and great food. Phood Photos to Phollow...I-Talian Sammich is straight 🔥🔥🔥. Quality ingredients and tastes like home. Better git you some...🤙🏽

These sandwiches are off the hook! I really enjoyed the chicken parm. Loved the vibes of the dudes making the sandwiches too. I've been twice now, and it may just be my favorite spot to stop on a Saturday afternoon.

This was one of the most delicious sandwiches I’ve had in Portland. The fact that it is a food cart means NOTHING, because the ingredients are fresh & delicious. I love that they serve everyone with the same smile & provide a great experience. I would love to see new featured sandwiches in the future. I look forward to trying the whole menu.

Google
First off I have to rave about the person working here. Stopped here on a whim while out walking my dogs and they were so warm and kind and gave my dogs a little treat. I got the eggplant parmesan sandwich. The bread is the perfect combo of chewy, flaky and fluffy. Something in the filling was a bit on the salty side, but the generous topping of fresh basil on top helped balance it a bit. This is a cozy food truck spot with an eating area that doesn’t feel too closed in or crowded. Will be back!

Google
Was really excited to try the Italian sandwich, guy was in the cart didn't even look up from his phone to tell me "I'm prepping I'm never open on Mondays" I said well online it does so you might want to fix that for future customers. Didn't seem to care so I no longer care to eat your food. Treat all your customers with respect and you'll create a loyal one for life .

Google
You can order ahead by phone or Postmates, but I just ordered in person. Everyone was super friendly and practicing good social distancing/safety protocols. By the time I got there (5:20 on a Friday) a couple options were sold out - not a problem as what was left (Italian and Cubano) we're amazing! These sandwiches are almost too big, but we prevailed.

Google
When I came to the food truck at first I was disappointed when I saw the size of the hoagie (I thought to myself “I am getting that for $12?!”) Once I got the sandwich (I ordered the Italian) it didn’t disappoint, for $12 I got a pretty big sandwich with lots of meat, fresh veggies, a pretty good little cup of vinaigrette plus a small bag of chips. I’d highly recommend it.

Dude is super nice and can customize any sandwich. Love how they shred the lettuce, loaded! Mott’s were pretty good.

Yelp
This sandwich was intense. Good fried chicken, nicely melted cheese with a satisfying stretch. For a sandwich like this that has sauce I'd expect it to be messier but the ingredients are very well put together. HIGHLY underrated quality I greatly appreciate. I'd say for me personally there was a bit too much meat per bite on this one which bars it from being what I would call a perfect sandwich (i.e. Pastrami on Dutch at Baker's Mark) but maybe you don't want that. Maybe you want the flavor equivalent of a baseball bat swing to the face and for that this your go-to. This cart's got serious character and the guy working was cool. No chairs though so you're either taking it to-go or eating it hunched over their railing like me. Very cool spot and I'm coming back for their Italian and The Death Sandwich
google avatar

Naomi B.

Yelp
Their italian sandwich was so delicious! Definitely satisfies my craving for a classic NY italian sub. The ingredients were nice and fresh. I was full from half of it and saved the other half for dinner. Get there early before they sell out! The service was super friendly and quick too. A little expensive for a sandwich but I am definitely coming back to try the chicken parm.

Yelp
Luckily went today to the Division location. Just learned the last day at this location is Sunday 6/16/24 and then they are going more mobile and said to watch Instagram for schedules. I'm sad as they are just over a mile from my new location so I was planning on going more. It is so satisfying and I still haven't finished a whole sandwich at one sitting.

Yelp
My search for an east coast style hoagie continues! And damn....Demarco's is one of the closest I have found! Quality cuts, simple fresh ingredients, and fluffy soft bread.
google avatar

Yelp
Demarcos's sandwiches are insanely delicious. Ordering is always easy, and when I arrive my order is always ready, the delicious smell of a perfect sandwich floating through the bag. I've only seen one person in there and he is always super nice. My only issue is that I often forget my need for a Demarco's sandwich until it is too late and they are closed and/or sold out!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid sandwich and service! My eggplant parmagiana sando was just what the doctor ordered.
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
I was so hungry that I didn't take a photo (oops!). My friend recommended their eggplant parmigiana sandwiches. We ordered for pickup. They were hot, crispy, open and tasty! Service was friendly. They are a cart under a covered area. I'd come back to try the chicken Parmesan.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
At first, the guy (maybe the owner) gave off a vibe that he could care less, but then he asked "how's your day?" and ended with some nice parting statement. The Chicken Parm sandwich was good, better than average. But the $15 price tag is just silly. They have this huge open space in between another cart, but no chairs or tables. They want you to take it to go, why, so they don't have to empty and pay for trash? The menu is sparse, not only on sandwiches, but sides and drinks. Looks like a one and done for me.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
It pains me to write this review and give Demarco's only 3 stars. The guys working in the cart were very friendly and helpful, and the pastrami special was tasty. But $20 with tip for a takeout sandwich like this is really exorbitant. It is by far the most expensive takeout sandwich I've had in this town.

Yelp
Was in Portland for thanksgiving weekend and this was as one of the very few places open for lunch, which I really appreciated. Service was good and the sandwich I got, the chicken parm, was above expectations. Most parm sandwiches I've ate got really soggy from the ingredients but the one here held up on the ride back and the chicken was perfectly crispy. Well worth the visit if you're craving a sando spot and in the area. Will be back again for sure whenever I'm in town.

Yelp
A good sub sandwich can be hard to find in this town. Other than Taste Tickler and Jersey Mike's, there hasn't been much to offer for a good east coast sando. There are also sandwich offerings over at Red Sauce Pizza and Dimo's Apizza but I have yet to try them, they both offer amazing food so I have to figure that the sandwiches would be good. Call them subs, hoagies or grinders, we love them even though we know they're not great for us. DeMarco's is one of those places that has an amazing sandwich but it's hard to find when they're open. I've passed by many, many times and on this occasion, I just got lucky. First off, maybe they are grinders here, only because the guy who served me was wearing a Boston Bruins hat and that term is definitely straight from New England. I went with the very first sandwich I saw. The Italian. Straight from their website "Ham, pepperoni, salami, Copa, house-made giardiniera, hot peppers, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, red wine vinaigrette." The sandwich was incredible, although a little heavy-handed on the red onions. I removed the majority of them. Everything else on there, the ham, the Copa, the giardiniera, all tasty and very east coast. The price was in line with what I got and I will make attempts to try more of their fare. It is definitely a sandwich worth traveling for. Make your way down to Division. Enjoy and support local.

Yelp
Now that's an Italian Sandwich. I'm so happy that they decided to go with a different bread. Not that the last bread wasn't good. The new bread however is definitely the better choice. The giardiniera is so flavorful and herbal, and the meats are fresh and hearty. Biting into this delicious sandwich felt like I was tapping into my southern Italian roots. Best Italian sandwich in town.

Yelp
Food 3/5 got the Italian. bread was hard to chew. Way too much oil/vinaigrette. Decent spot if you're hungry and need something quick and easy. Overall just an average sandwich

Yelp
Love their eggplant parmesan sandwich. The marinara sauce is delicious. Great texture on the fried eggplant. Holds up well. Perfect amount of cheese too. Tasty!

Yelp
I am usually a sucker when it comes to sandwiches. They are usually pretty easy to eat and every bite is filled with goodness. These sandwiches are pretty good size and full of meat. We had the Italian Sandwich and Meatball Parmesan Sandwich. The meatball was perfect for the cold weather as it was nice and hot. The meatballs were of generous size and all the flavors were there. The Italian Sandwich was a good compliment as it was cold and had a different taste profile. Both sandwiches were delicious and satisfying.

Yelp
Wow. My husband and I visited the other food cart there a billion years ago. The Korean one. K just isn't my favorite. But we saw this Italian place was opening soon, we opened we would try it sometime. Now, too many years later, we tried this Italian place--Demarcos--which had been listed as new way back when. I don't eat out a ton. But holy heck, their food is truly amazing. As a rare reviewer, I feel like and hope you understand! We had a chicken parm sammich. I told my husband I'd only eat a bit bc I'm not often hungry since having Covid. So I had a quarter of this sammich. And DAMN. It is honestly very truly good. The chicken, the breading, the sauce, and the cheese. Wow. Our new plan is to try to figure out how and if we can get these yummies for a dinner. Because they understandably often sell out!

no o.

Yelp
super cute food cart in a nice area with covered outdoor seating. I got the meatball sub, it was loaded and a good price. It was also prepared fast. The guy working was polite as well. Its a little hidden but the guy working was happy to let me know im in the right place

Yelp
Another day working at home, another Portland sandwich to try for take-out. Ordered ahead for an Italian Sandwich combo. Italian sandwich, canned soda and chips. Italian sandwich has: ham, salami, cola, provolone, pepperoni, lettuce, tomato, red onions, peppers, giardineria & vinaigrette on a crispy (but not too crispy) roll. This was big. I scarfed it down and needed a nap. Solid Italian sandwich.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic eggplant parm sandwiches. Similar to the ones served on the east coast. I order mine with extra sauce, it's perfect. Wish they were open on Mondays and Tuesdays.
google avatar

Zachary L.

Yelp
These sandwiches are pretty fire, not gonna lie. The execution and style really hit the mark and I enjoy the flavors. The only thing I'm personally not too fond of is the hardness of the bread, if there was an option to have hard or soft bread, that would really put this sandwich over the top, but I can't dock any stars since it's a personally preference. Overall, solid sandwich and friendly staff. Thanks!

Kim A.

Yelp
You've got the craving for an authentic Italian hoagie or you wouldn't be here. Demarco's delivers, big time. Got mine to go and it became the centerpiece for three meals. Badaboom!
google avatar

Yelp
DeMarcos, I'm gonna eat here I'm gonna let you go Italy  Like every day I said I would And DeMarcos, I'm gonna listen To that hungry voice inside my head  Telling me that you're so good Tonight I'm gonna give in one more time Rock Grinders In these hands of mine Read all the reviews that are bound to follow We like Legumes and Provo-lean I'm not good at cooking  You're so good for me Play Chris Young for each & every Sando So tonight, I'm gonna chow down  Like there's no  Tomorrow

Yelp
Cons: they're closed Monday and Tuesday Pros: everything else If I were going for a job interview, and got asked what my weaknesses are, I'd have to admit that I tend to get distracted by meatball subs, to the exclusion of other wonderful things on the menu. If you try the meatball option at Demarco's, you won't be disappointed, but the same can be said for everything else I've sampled here. Carts can take a small menu, concentrate on one thing, and do it spectacularly well. I can't think of a better example of this than Demarco's. They're among the 3 best sandwich options that I've found in this exceptional food environment.

Yelp
Been on the hunt for a real deli sandwich since moving to portland years ago. This is it. Finally. The Italian is perfect, from the bread to the giardinera, thinly sliced onions, and vinaigrette. Also super friendly and chill. Will def be back to try the other sandwiches.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
My partner and I stumbled upon Demarco's on a sunny afternoon and it blew our minds. The guy running the food truck was super friendly and delivered great service. The food was delicious, had huge portion sizes, and was difficult, but extremely fun to eat. Definitely worth the trip for this delicious meal!
google avatar

Louie M.

Yelp
I'm so happy to live near a cart like Demarco's, because it's so solid. Every sandwich is terrific. I think the Italian sandwich is my go-to but the specials have also been consistently great. I look forward to coming here at least once a week.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
I wish I would have taken a picture of my beautiful meatball parmesano sandwich. And thankfully, it was good as it looked. 4 large meatballs that were enouph for two lunches. All their sandwiches look good. Come check them out.

Keenan D.

Yelp
Great sandwiches but loves to cancel orders because they're lazy. Stop doing door dash bud.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good Italian-style sandwiches, ideal for take out, with a nice variety on the menu. We tried both the Italian sub and the eggplant parm. The Italian is packed with ham, pepperoni, salami, copacollo, giardiniera, hot peppers, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, and served with vinaigrette on a soft bun. The giardinara is house-made and, along with the peppers, spicy. Tasty and filling, though I would have preferred a crisper, crustier bun. My partner preferred the eggplant parm (thinly sliced breaded eggplant, house-made marinara, parmesan cheese, and melted mozzarella), which was also delicious. She shared my opinion on the soft bun. DeMarco's also offers meatball subs and chicken parms, and their board lists an Italian-style reuben. They share a deck space with Kim Jong Grillin'. Friendly customer service. Tasty sandwiches.

Christian F.

Yelp
These guys are the best. Been going here for a year plus now, and I never finish my meal disappointed or not absolutely stuffed. Swear there's a few chicken breasts in each sammy. Meatballs are colossal. And they're made with so much love. My go to is the chicken parm, my partner adores the chicken cutlet. Basil ranch is next level stuff, even goes great with the parm. This place is the TRUTH. Demarcos gang, frickin love you guys. Don't listen to the naysayers, bask in the epic-ness and girth of the chicken parm below. Peace. PS - Follow them on instagram. That's where they post the SPECIALS!!!

Yelp
I don't do food carts. I live in Portland, and I refuse to do food carts. I hate getting all tasted up and go to a food cart only for them to be closed. Oh and I don't like lines. scratch that. reverse that, back up the van Jack. I do Demarco's, and even though they may damn well create probably the best freakin grinder in all of this land, I NOW do A food cart. I may actually do some, okay probably 2 food carts. Stated facts - Demarcos is closed MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS, and if they sell out. I can handle those rules. BUT let's get back to this work of art, GRINDER. It is a beautiful sight to behold. I had seen previous photos, I didn't think it would live up to its hype. It had to have been airbrushed, they must have used filters like the lady on 90 days that got the hot foreign boyfriend. There is no way it will look that gooooood in person. It did and does. From the perfectly crusty chewy bread that I doused in oil and vinegar, to the razored lettuce, ripe red and juicy 'maters and thinly sliced meat all nestled neatly .... OH, and those diced up peppers. Yes. I waited until I was back in my office, behind a locked door and closed blinds before I unpacked my Grinder. Boy howdy, I was thankful that the office was mostly a ghost town, as there was a lot of moaning and groaning that I wasn't in a place to explain away.... and to be honest I wouldn't lie. I couldn't. The afterglow was obvious, and besides I would never betray my new found love like that. I am a stand up woman, I got my Grinders back. So call in your order, and set the mood... cuz you are about to get it on ... grinder style.
google avatar

Yelp
A very solid sandwich option, in close-in southeast. Got an Italian and a chicken parm And both were tasty. Would definitely go back again. Free chips was a nice touch. (Pro tip: get the Ital then turn the meat 90 degrees for eating. Presented great tho) Also got the chowder and was about what you'd expect from a scoop and serve option.
google avatar

Noah W.

Yelp
This place blows. We're here three times took two bags and threw the sandwich away. I asked if they had a normal turkey sandwich he said yes when i got it it had hash brown cranberry sauce and sliced turkey On a soggy ass roll. I thought it was a side of soup but it was gravy. Gross. The other sandwich is sucked in the server it was totally rude.
google avatar

Evan C.

Yelp
Let's be honest it's hard to find a decent Italian sub on the left coast. I'm super thankful to find Demarco's as it's something that's been missing in my life. I went with the Italian Sandwich: Ham, pepperoni, salami, Copa, house-made giardiniera, hot peppers, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, red wine vinaigrette. The meats were exceptional as well as the vinaigrette (served on the side) The only thing I might change is the bread, as it was a little hard and made for a messy endeavor. Needless to say this was the most enjoyable lunch I've had in awhile. Prices, service, everything is on point here. Mangia!
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
This is a new cart with a small starting menu sharing the seating are of Kim Jong Grillin'. Their specialty is East Coat hot subs. I had the meatball and the chicken parmesan. They weren't over salted, the buns were serviceable, not the crunchy Pearl Bakery-style, the marinara had a lot of tomato pieces and the melted provolone was garnished with shredded fresh basil. I would suggest getting the sandwiches to eat there. To-go they are wrapped tight in white butcher paper with some waxed paper over the juicy business end of the sandwich. The waxed paper merges with the cheese and it is almost impossible to separate the two. We wish this cart well and you won't leave hungry!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
It was awesome!! Gotten the chicken parm and the meatball parm they were fantastic! The owner(I think) was very friendly asked about my day, it was my birthday and I was doing an east coast themed dining experience (got cakes, cookies and bagels from NY and NJ) and I wanted to compliment with an east coast and it didn't disappoint!
google avatar

Yvonna M.

Yelp
My go to sandwich cart In SE Portland with dank daily specials, huge sammies and very reasonably priced! This place is a gem and every time I go the sandwiches get better and better! Covid procedures are followed and they have a covered area to wait for your food! If your in the area stop by!
google avatar

Gabby K.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are no joke. We got an italian and chicken parm and both were great. The chicken parm was cheesy, saucy, perfectly cooked chicken and the roll was nice and toasty. The italian had a solid line up of meats, lettuce, tomato, onion and some herb-y oil/vinegar combo on the side to top it off with. They were so overstuffed, it was hard to eat, but worth it!

Zooner D.

Yelp
Love the Italian and the meatball subs. As good as any sandwich from south Philadelphia. Go early because he runs out by 2 or earlier. Also love the Grateful Dead theme. Get a sticker.

Joshua B.

Yelp
Death sandwich made me believe in god, Zizmzzizzizmzizmzizmzizmzizizmzizmzimzizizmzim, had to reach the character minimum
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Best sandwiches I've had since moving back to the west coast, no exaggeration. The Italian and meatball subs are packed with all the goodies and seasonings that more than satisfy. Portions are huge too, so you won't be left hungry, and will likely have leftovers!

Yelp
Demarcos Sandwiches had been on our list of food trucks to check out for a while, but living in North Portland, we never really got the chance to drive down there and try some of these seemingly delicious sandwiches.. that changed yesterday! I ordered the chicken cutlet & mozzarella sticks. Both were absolutely amazing, the sandwich being the most memorable part though. Good ratio of meat/veggies/bread, and everything tasted very high quality and flavorful; and what was crazier is that the sandwiches were only a couple bucks more than a footlong at subway.. and 500 times better (why do people still eat at Subway?). Customer service was also top-notch, and the guy working was extremely thankful for our business (I'm thinking it was the owner?). When food & customer service is amazing, that makes me a lifetime customer! Thanks for the epic sandwich Demarco's. My fiancé and I are the type of people who usually go out to HH somewhere, have a couple drinks and end up getting food wherever we are at, but that trend has unfortunately led us away from trying so many of the awesome food trucks Portland is known for, enter COVID-19. While this pandemic has been heartbreaking and tiresome for so many, one tiny positive for us is that it has "forced" us to expand our food truck eating, and we may never go back to how we used to eat out. Sorry for the little rant at the end, I just want to tell everyone. EAT AT DEMARCOS & make it a point to support some of the wonderful food trucks that are all over PDX!
google avatar

Ariel B.

Yelp
I just got delivery, and I got exactly what I was expecting. The sandwich looks just like the pictures I saw online before I ordered. Tony Soprano would be proud. So would Henry Hill or any other badass from mafia based television. In conclusion: yum. Thank you for being available to deliver.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Best sandwich I've had in Portland (and I've lived here my whole life)! They've also been donating meals to healthcare workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. 10/10 RECOMMEND.

David N.

Yelp
Reposting since it seems that Yelp requires multiple reviews in order to deem a negative review accurate. On the bright side, it encouraged me to post positive reviews on the Portland restaurants I support! Very disappointing food, even worse owner. Rubin or whatever that guy's name is has a mouth on him. He cussed out another customer who while we were eating. Sure some customers might "deserve" it from time to time but there's a way to deal with that. All of the times I've eaten out in Portland and elsewhere, that's the first time I've ever experienced that. That's enough for me to give it a one star. The food would drop it below one star if it was possible. I split the Italian and Chicken Parm with my wife and haven't been as disappointed in a while. Not sure if his profanity-laden outburst left a sour taste in my mouth, but both sandwiches had no flavor. Probably because they were 2/3 bread and the other 1/3 on the Italian was red onions. Very little meat in both sandwiches. Even if you're in the neighborhood and have the patience to deal with the owner or are desperately hungry, I'd strongly suggest making the effort to go somewhere that won't lull your taste buds to sleep. Plenty of food trucks in Portland that have good food and an owner that I want to support.

Ryan H.

Yelp
Killer sandwich. Crushed it in the car like an animal. Gravy on the side? This guy thought of everything.
google avatar

Destiny B.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best sandwiches I've had. We had the OG Italian grinder and the meatball sub and we're blown away. Saucy, messy, and satisfying. Very messy tho - wouldn't recommend for a first date unless that's your thing.

Nicole C.

Yelp
I have been here multiple times. I have tried all of their standard sandwiches, the chicken cutlet is my favorite. The special sandwiches are the best. For a while I thought the eggplant parmesan was the best, then today I had the pork with broccoli rabe and the dippy au jus and that might have been the best sandwich I have ever eaten. I got the last one and only because I live my husband dearly I allowed him to eat the other half. Do yourself a favor and eat here you will be full and happy. The bread is soft but never soggy and the toppings are always fresh and tasty. I have never left here hungry, most of the time I only eat half as that is plenty for me.
