Demetri's used to be a favorite of mine decades ago. I went to high school right around the corner and whether it was picking up breakfast in the morning or BBQ or a hamburger later on in the day, they always hit the spot. They've been there forever and I'm glad they're still around.
I stopped in for a BBQ sandwich on my way out of town a few days ago. I was greeted and seated immediately. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich topped with slaw, a sweet tea, and a peach hand pie for the road. The sweet tea was fresh brewed and perfectly sweet and Southern. My pulled pork came out and I was a bit disappointed that it was already sauced, which really was my fault for not asking. I prefer it when BBQ places let you sauce your sandwich yourself at the table. I'm sure they've always done it this way and I just forgot since it had been so long since I'd been there.
Anyhow, there was a lot of meat on the sandwich and it being sauced didn't ruin it. The sauce is typical of a classic Alabama red sauce that leans to the vinegary side and not too thick. The pulled pork was chopped and had a nice smoky flavor. I also spotted bark. The topped slaw I ordered was also the vinegary type and freshly made. I didn't dislike the sauce or the slaw, but next time I will order it with the sauce on the side and not opt again for a slaw topping. The meat is good enough to stand alone. (At home above the Mason Dixon line, I have to top with slaw, pickles, onion, and sauce to hide the fact that very few BBQ places around smoke their meat right.)
The fried hand pies are a must!!! They are reason alone to make a visit here. They were homemade, full of fruit, and freshly fried to a perfect golden brown. You can have them a la mode too! They also have plate lunch specials here, as well as breakfast, burgers, and other sandwiches. The service was friendly and efficient. The location is great and just a block off of 31 in Homewood. The prices were in line with their category. Next time I'm back for either a late breakfast or a burger and I will not leave without a pie. Great old school joint still kickin' and competing well with the trendy options all around. Eating here brought back so many memories. I'll be back.
