30 Essential Restaurants to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"Demitri’s is one of Homewood’s oldest restaurants — it opened under another name and across the street from its current location in 1961 and remains one of Birmingham’s top spots for barbecue and breakfast. Although barbecue is at Demitri’s core, the classic spot offers a few Greek staples and even a Greek catering service (founder and owner Demitri Nakos immigrated from Greece to Birmingham in 1955). The breakfast here is the stuff of legends, some come early and don’t let the crowding at the front deter you — and don’t pass up the queso grits." - Sarra Sedghi

I’ve only gone for Brunch on Sundays. The grits and biscuits are superb. I’ve had the omelette and tacos. They were both good.

Google
Why I rated the overall atmosphere so poorly is simply because it was overcrowded and chaotic. Granted I did go on a Sunday for brunch which is not the best of times to go to relax, BUT obviously a good sign that this restaurant has fantastic food. I'm here to tell you, they definitely do. Today I had the stuffed poblano with shrimp. It comes with a delicious smokey red sauce, creamy and thick cheese sauce, and a little corn griddle cake. Also, yes, that is an entire half of an avocado! In addition to my entree, I had to try their famous "love" biscuit. You can order as is or grilled, and I had mine grilled. Wow. Not only is it a giant, it is so moist. This is quite possibly the best biscuit I have ever had. I look forward to coming back for one of their biscuit sandwiches.

Google
For a long time I’ve been very excited to try Dimitri’s for breakfast. There’s always a line out the door and today was no exception. So of course, my son and I were very excited and starving so we knew this was gonna be a good experience! ….How wrong we were. My son got pancakes with chocolate chips and they lacked any flavor at all and merely tasted like soggy bread. The bacon was a bit burnt, but luckily that’s how I like it! I got a side of cheese grits that were nothing less than water and sand. The sawmill gravy was slop and clearly made from a store bought packet, and the biscuits were super dry. $40 later I was left with a growling stomach and a hungry child. The only positive I can give this place is at the service was a tentative and kind. Don’t waste your time or your money. Go somewhere else.

Google
Delicious food still served here...amazing service, fun old pics and menus to look at on the walls. I loved the baked beans and had to take some home!

Molly Killingsworth

Google
Nice spot for breakfast- large portions. The food was delicious and the service was great!

Larry Cochran

Google
As always really good food. Mildly disappointed on this visit. Chicken tenders for 8.75 only came with 4 pieces and no sides. Added fried okra which is always great.

Google
Had the Monday lunch special today - one of the best hamburger steaks I've ever had! A generous portion, piled w/ onions, 'shrooms, & gravy (which could be its own food group, it's so good). Sides of mashed potatoes, turnip greens, & a piece of cornbread. Delicious! Cleaned my plate! Demetri's will fill you up & treat you right. A Homewood landmark!

Timothy Chad Murphy

Google
Great little place to eat for lunch. The BBQ is very good. The cornbread is a must-have!!! And apple turnover is FINE

Yelp
First time stopping in here. Greeted quickly and fast service. Food was great and reasonably priced. For a hustling morning crowd I was impressed.

Yelp
Had breakfast at Demitris today. After everyone else's food arrived, after a long wait, I was informed that they were oat of the breakfast I ordered. I reluctantly ordered something else and proceeded to wait and wait for my food. Every one was done eating when my two pancakes arrived. Would've atleast appreciated not being charged for my meal. That being said the other's like there meals.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get the grilled biscuit. You won't regret it! Grilled biscuit + Gouda + egg and a side of hash browns for an immaculate meal! Cozy mom and pop style. Can get busy but moves quick!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Just had the WORST MEAL there! Plain bun...not toasted. Greek chicken...bland & tasteless (FYI...Johnny's is sooo much better) Had to eat with a spoon. Terribly over priced for what you got. Sad.
google avatar

Yelp
We were in town visiting our son and picked this place blindly on our way out of town because the parking lot was full. We sat at the bar, service was good and quick. There were a lot of locals there which says a lot. Fun, busy vibe. My husband ordered the Fiesta Omelet - said it was very good! I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which was meh...I ordered avocado on the side because it didn't come with it. Overkill on the red sauce and not enough black beans and cheese.
google avatar

Nia A.

Yelp
For the price of my meal ($23 for pancakes, bacon, potatoes and a mimosa) it wasn't worth it. My pancakes tasted like flour and the bacon was burnt. The best part of my meal was definitely the potatoes. Service is nonexistent after you order and get your food. I probably won't be back.

Yelp
This was my second time eating here and it felt like home. I ordered the wings and ribs plate with side salad and mash tato. The wings came with a sauce that I can only describe as ranch and thousand island mixed together very tangy and good. The ribs were disappointingly very very dry to the point of inedible. The side salad was refreshing and delicious. Their ranch is now on my list of good ranches in Birmingham A++. One of my daughters got the pigsickle (rib) and my other daughter got a pretty good size tasty cheeseburger off the kids menu. My husband ordered the pulled chicken salad. The only thing he found odd was it didn't come with cheese of all things. All in all, we will be back for the wings as they were comparable to Troups and Slice...fall off the bone tender and awesome smoky flavor and the customer service is as 10/10. We can't wait to go back and try breakfast which is highly recommended I've heard. See ya soon Demetri's !

Morgan A.

Yelp
We have been coming to Demetris every Sunday for years. Their Sunday brunch menu and ordering process is different than other days. If it's your first time, you have to get The Original so you can get a little bit of everything ESPECIALLY THE GRILLED LOVE BISCUIT. No matter what you have to make sure you get a biscuit. I've also gotten the potato bowl, French toast, nachos, stuffed poblano pepper (yum!), and recently I've been getting the fried steak and eggs (picture attached). It can be a little busy on Sundays when church gets out but it's worth it!!

W H.

Yelp
Loved the smell of BBQ when we entered the restaurant. The brisket and pork BBQ sandwiches and fries were delicious! We had a friendly and attentive server. Will definitely be back! Really want to try their breakfast soon!

Brent P.

Yelp
Walked in for first time at 10:27. Was ask if here for breakfast and said OK and she sat me at table. Then about 4 minutes later guy comes over and says to late for breakfast and lunch does not start for 30 mins. Weird. No sorry anything . Would suggest I am sorry you are to late by time I got to your table as they served the folks next to me but just turned and walked away. First and last time I will visit.

Yelp
Stepped into Demetri's BBQ and embarked on a flavor-packed adventure! Opted for the brisket plate featuring a symphony of mouthwatering sides--cornbread, turnip greens, and mac & cheese. The onion rings, drizzled with a specialty spicy & sweet sauce, delivered a satisfying crunch. The wood fire grilled salmon, crowned with a relish, took taste buds to new heights. Complemented by turnip greens, baked beans, and more of that delicious cornbread. Soft and not a hint of dryness. And let's talk about that specialty hot sauce on the table--a spicy companion that enhanced every bite. While Demetri's is famed for breakfast, our lunch experience is not to be underestimated. A haven for barbecue enthusiasts and a testament to the culinary prowess that extends beyond the morning menu.

Yelp
FAVORITE BBQ SPOT PERIOD. I have never been a huge bbq gal but at Demetri's that goes out the window! Their bbq sauce is more tangy & just absolutely perfect. I always get a pork plate so I can make my own sandwich (gotta get a side of slaw to add to the sandwich). With my plate I get the fried okra which is probably the best I have had, dip it in the sauce that comes with the onion rings & Their mac n cheese should be called mac & 700 pounds of cheese. I mean this in a very good way... I'll end with a fun fact - this is the longest standing business in Homewood AL.. for obvious reasons.

LaShunda C.

Yelp
Service is horrible! The owner literally walked around and spoke to everyone in the room except me and my husband as we sat in the middle of the room as the only black customers. This was the second time he did this. We will never go back. Last but not least, McDonalds, Waffle House, or anywhere you will find better food.
google avatar

Jen J.

Yelp
Came for an early breakfast. They were nice and patient with me as it was my first time there. Would recommend for breakfast. It gets busy later so haven't tried another time of day yet. Also have grab and go meals.
google avatar

Jocelyn Q.

Yelp
Just awesome. I am so glad I decided to to go here for breakfast today. I can't believe I've been missing out. I suggest everyone try this place for Sunday brunch. The food was fantastic. Very unique but all of it was so tasty. Everyone at my table enjoyed it. Small restaurant though and due to popularity, you'll probably be waiting in a long line but it's worth it! Service is friendly and kind. Also, try the wings! They're probably in the top three best wings I've ever had!

Greg H.

Yelp
I came in at 7:20 am for breakfast on a Thursday. The place was slammed but I was able to get a parking spot and a table. I ordered The barbecue omelet because I'm a barbecue guy and his is a barbecue place when they aren't serving breakfast. The day old barbecue on the omelet was excellent for what it was. I can only imagine what it is like when you eat it the way you are supposed to. The service was great the food was great and the price was reasonable. If life ever puts me back in Homewood for breakfast. I will come again without hesitation.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. They never miss a beat. They keep the fresh coffee coming and the scrambled eggs are perfect and fluffy. The Mimosas are excellent btw. I love the Smoky smell of Barbeque in the air as you walk in but it's not a smoke filled place. The host was super friendly.
google avatar

Steven A.

Yelp
Just finished a quick lunch at Demetri's. I was eating alone so I grabbed a seat at the counter, the staff are friendly and quick with a menu and my beverage of choice. You can tell by the hickory smoke smell, this is gonna be good Que, and it was! I had a sliced pork samich n a side salad(gotta eat healthy). My food came out fast and it was delicious! The parking is a little tight, if you're driving a full sized truck, so get there early and get a good spot. Of course I ate everything down before I could snap a picture. But, I do recommend.
google avatar

Taysia Q.

Yelp
Amazing pancakes. It's a cozy restaurant. Just enough space. Advice is ok. Been going there for years
google avatar

Stewart W.

Yelp
I had the half chicken with collard greens and fries. The chicken was moist and has amazing smoky flavor, hands down some of the best barbecue chicken I've had.
google avatar

Jonathan O.

Yelp
And it came so highly recommended. Sticky tables. Lipstick on the coffee mugs. Crowded seating. A pass for us on this breakfast spot.

John R.

Yelp
Love Demerti's. Favorite bbq. Their sauce is the best. Great breakfast too. Rita and the crew provide excellent fast service too.
google avatar

Luke K.

Yelp
Omelets and cheese grits are excellent!! Service is always great. I want the recipe for the cheese grits!!
google avatar

Marcella S.

Yelp
Another much loved Birmingham spot that we are just getting around to trying. I still don't know what took us so long to stop in. We went on a Sunday and took advantage of their brunch menu. My husband order the brisket nachos. It was a very quiet meal as he inhaled every single bit of brisket, que so, and chop on his plate. I ordered breakfast and the grits were so flavorful. The biscuits are massive and I loved the grilled crunchiness on them. The pancakes here are amazing!! Crispy, yet such a great vanilla flavor. We will be back to try the weekly menu soon!
google avatar

Mutiso F.

Yelp
Their smoked wings are BOMB. I'll have to come back and try some other items, but them wings.....BOMB.
google avatar

Carly R.

Yelp
The breakfast was great!! Great portions and the biscuits with honey were delicious. Try to come here every time in bham

Travis M.

Yelp
I had the ribs, wings and brisket and it was not good nor did it seem fresh. The brisket was tough and the ribs were cold. In short, I would not give them another try. Service on the other-hand was warm and inviting. Really good staff.
google avatar

Gabe P.

Yelp
I recently came here for some dessert and utilized their drive up window. The young man who assisted with my order did a good job. He was very courteous. I ordered a slice of coconut pie and a fried peach turnover. The coconut pie wasn't for me but looked good. The peach turnover was pipping HOT and nearly melted the styrofoam counter it came in. Not real sure why it was packaged this way but it was certainly fresh and I appreciated that. This wasn't my first time at Demetri's but I don't quite remember anything about my previous visit. I was impressed with their daily specials and all the varieties of vegetables offered. I plan on visiting here again soon!
google avatar

Jerry T.

Yelp
BBQ was very good. We all had the pulled pork. Sauce was mild but good. I had the wood grilled veggies -- outstanding! My wife's slaw and red beans and rice was good. Service was excellent. Waitress checked back with us several times. Food came out promptly. Tables and chairs were too close together. Hard to get up without disturbing your neighbor. Parking was packed
google avatar

Harrell B.

Yelp
I haven't had their BBQ yet, but o can certainly vouch for their breakfast. The best egg white omelette I've ever had. Cheese grits are fabulous and the grilled biscuit is a Lil' Sumthin' Special indeed!! Well done folks. A great neighborhood find in Homewood. Try it, you'll like it!!

Frank B.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE FOR BREAKFAST. I payed 45 dollars for the most mediocre french toast i have ever eaten, and a sausage and potato bowl. Place is just a money grab better off eating at the jacks across the road
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
I can tell I'm going against the grain on this review - they have so many great reviews, I have to admit - I'm disappointed with my visit here. I don't always like to write a review after just one trip to any establishment, but that being said, many times it's that initial interaction that will steer the relationship you have with a place. If things go well, then you will probably be back - you are a little more inclined to let some things go if that initial experience is a good one. But, when you start off rough, it's hard to want to go back and give additional tries - there isn't a relationship built already. All that said to kind of make a point, I feel like this is a place that caters to 'locals'. I watched as the wait staff interacted with people that had clearly been there before (talking with customers on first name basis). As I sat and waited for my table to get cleaned - have a menu brought to me - get a drink order in ...... it just isn't exceptionally welcoming for a new person visiting. When my drink was brought to the table my waitress evacuated as quickly as possible to continue her rounds with the regulars ... meanwhile I couldn't get her attention to ask for a straw that was forgotten with my drink. With a stack of straws at a counter in the corner - problem solved, I got my own. The food came out pretty quick and all in all wasn't too bad. Not that any of them would have known if there was a problem as I was never checked on during the course of the meal. Pork sandwhich had good flavor and stood alone w/o needing any sauce. The onion rings were under battered - which is too bad, as the batter had a good flavor. The food is probably deserving of a 4 star, but I just can't say that anything compels me to return. Once I was done eating I sat at the table for 10 plus minutes waiting to try and pay - wallet out - money out - obvious I'm ready to go. It's always nice when you have a place you can go as a 'local' and they take care of you. But it shouldn't be at the expense of new customers.

Yelp
Grabbed a Combo meal and some Chili for lunch the other day. Huge menu but the ordering was easy and cashier that took my order was friendly All the meats on the combo plate were great but especially the chicken. Chili was traditional and well done. Mac and Cheese fell a little flat for me. I will be back.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE Demetri's for breakfast! We get to grab breakfast once in a blue moon here, and it's always awesome. The food never disappoints, the people are always friendly and fun, and every experience is always great. It's nothing fussy or pretentious, definitely a place for blue collar people. The whole place smells like BBQ and has been in business for 60 years. It's honestly one of my favorite hints for breakfast.

Marc I.

Yelp
My cousin recommended this place for good BBQ. So being close to BHM international we went there for lunch before our drive to our destination to Guntersville. Wait staff was friendly and attentive! Server was good but had to get my TN ears up and running! After the third What? I got it... I had the Brisket Sandwich with BBQ Sauce and my wife had a BBQ chicken Salad. Sad to say neither were very special. My Brisket was OK while my wife said this is like the salad she makes at home! The next time In Birmingham probably won't go back.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Some of the best smoked wings I've ever had! You have the option of a 5 wing or 10 wing plate served alongside 2 sides. The fresh veggie sides are always good. The Mac & Cheese and fried okra are my personal my favs!

Wally P.

Yelp
8/17/23 Went to this restaurant around 2pm today. I noticed there was not one vehicle in their parking lot.Now I understand why. We went to the drive thru & ordered 2 slabs of BBQ ribs to bring back with us to Tuscaloosa.Including tax & tip,the cost was around $67.00 I was thinking to myself driving home, these ribs must be delicious! Boy, was I wrong. THE ABSOLUTE WORST RIBS I HAVE EVER TASTED!!! They were old, small, very tough & not edible We couldnt eat them! AVOID BBQ RIBS AT THIS PLACE
google avatar

Dane W.

Yelp
Heard that this business has gone to order at counter. A lot of businesses have problems keeping workers. If any yelpers go please review. When I've been in past the bbq was delicious.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Breakfast is the bomb. They keep the coffee refills coming and have the good ice for cold beverages. Great historic Homewood pics make for interesting viewing.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
Old school breakfast with no fuss. Walk in pick your own seat. Great coffee and cheese grits that will make you want to slap someone. Get there early or there Wil be a wait.
google avatar

Lance T.

Yelp
Food is good, but they have gone to ordering at the counter and serving your own drinks, which results in long lines blocking the area where you now have to serve yourself. Plus you have go home to change clothes and shower afterwards...unless you want to spend the remainder of your day smelling like a BBQ smoke pit.
google avatar

Scotty C.

Yelp
After an evening of drinking and a long day of putting together a giant party, we definitely needed a hearty meal to start off right. Demitri's was around the corner from my hotel so I went to grab a table awaiting the arrival of Brett N and Will B. Growing up in the northeast I'm a big fan or breakfast diners. I felt like they were everywhere in the Boston area but now that I'm in Charleston, SC I don't find them anywhere. Will pointed out that it a common practice for BBQ places to do breakfast in the AM... now that's a concept that's got legs. Nothing fancy here for breakfast but everything was as ordered and expected. Coffee, scrambled eggs, buttery toast, and some crispy bacon was exactly what I needed to start my day. What I didn't need was the ketchup mess I created from the punk-kid who left the top open on the bottle, but what can you do. You win this time kid.
google avatar

Brett N.

Yelp
Why 5 stars? Because I wish I could eat a BBQ omelet every week! --- --- --- My hopes were not super high as we approached Demetri's, which looked pretty dive-y and wore a 3.5 star review, but I trust in Will B more than I trust in most members of my family, so I was willing to see it through. It turns out - Demetri's makes a mean breakfast! I've never seen a BBQ omelet on a menu before... but I love BBQ and I love omelets, so what could go wrong?! The answer is nothing, because it was amazing. Usually, omelets are pretty run-of-the-mill without a ton of discrepancy behind them, but this one was different - in a good way. And the BBQ sauce was the ideal complement. The grits weren't anything super fancy, but they were really solid. Plenty of cheese and butter was added in, which always contributes to happiness all around.
google avatar

Brittney S.

Yelp
Very welcoming and great food. I wish I would have asked the lady at the register her name, but she was the sweetest woman. We ordered with her and sat at a table near the cash register so we were lucky enough to hear how feminine and heartwarming all of her conversations were! She made everyone feel right at home!! We came here for Sunday Brunch, but my roommate insisted we also get some smoked wings because they are the best (and she was right!). I ordered the French toast - the texture was amazing, I'm guessing it was something like cornbread but sweeter?? There wasn't a description but omg it was goooooood! My roommate got the chicken fingers and fries which she loved. Our other friend got the Huevos rancheros, she smiled and was happy the whole meal and said it was super good and was #cleanplateclub. Lastly, my boyfriend ordered the brisket rancheros omelette (I think that was the name) and I got to try and and oooo it was good - the grits from his meal were the winner for me though. Can't wait to go back and try the triple blueberry pancakes!!! (And to eat more grits!!!)
google avatar

Brittni A.

Yelp
I was introduced to this spot randomly for breakfast & it's become a favorite ever since. Weekdays, weekends, Sunday brunch, I've throughly enjoyed Demitri's for a morning-ish meal on countless occasions. Everything is always so good and hot (especially the coffee) and the grilled biscuit is probably my favorite thing (not on the menu). Seriously great food and really good service in the AM but I know nothing about lunch or dinner. I need to get on it but hoping it's just as great. Breakfast though, I love it!

Lee S.

Yelp
Beware! This popular restaurant serves a terrible overpriced breakfast. Burned bacon and potatoes. Cheap sausage. Boring scrambled eggs. $52 for two simple plates. Prices not on the menu. McDonald's is better.
google avatar

Paul T.

Yelp
I just got off my GrubHub shift and, as usually, I looked around for what's good to eat near me. There was a smoothie place where I had parked, "Nah". A fast food style Chinese restaurant across the street, "not feeling it". Then I caught a BBQ place out of the corner of my eye. I had heard about Demetri's fir some time but never went out of my way to try it, now seemed as good a time as any. I did't want a whole meal so I order a pork sandwich, sliced. The healthy portion of meat was well cooked, the sauce was tangy and the bun was a good match of meat to bun ratio. I took a few pics of the inside, it was close to closing time on a Thursday so don't judge the food by the crowd. They have s little room (pic from the outside) that could be used for a nice lunch meeting. I will definitely go out my way next time to try more of Demetri's menu.
google avatar

Gary C I.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast! Thanks goes out to YELP reviewers for their great comments that drew me here for the meal. Server very accomadating and made excellent recommendations. Son and I went with pancakes with sausage and huevos rancheros. We split the meals. Great idea! The pancakes were fluffy without being flimsy and the sausage was like back at Grannys after a hog killing. Fresh and not too spicy. A spot hitter. Huevos rancheros reminded me of Honduras with corn tortillas and white chili. Outstanding and would not hesitate to make this a reqular breakfast stop.

Yelp
Demetri's used to be a favorite of mine decades ago. I went to high school right around the corner and whether it was picking up breakfast in the morning or BBQ or a hamburger later on in the day, they always hit the spot. They've been there forever and I'm glad they're still around. I stopped in for a BBQ sandwich on my way out of town a few days ago. I was greeted and seated immediately. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich topped with slaw, a sweet tea, and a peach hand pie for the road. The sweet tea was fresh brewed and perfectly sweet and Southern. My pulled pork came out and I was a bit disappointed that it was already sauced, which really was my fault for not asking. I prefer it when BBQ places let you sauce your sandwich yourself at the table. I'm sure they've always done it this way and I just forgot since it had been so long since I'd been there. Anyhow, there was a lot of meat on the sandwich and it being sauced didn't ruin it. The sauce is typical of a classic Alabama red sauce that leans to the vinegary side and not too thick. The pulled pork was chopped and had a nice smoky flavor. I also spotted bark. The topped slaw I ordered was also the vinegary type and freshly made. I didn't dislike the sauce or the slaw, but next time I will order it with the sauce on the side and not opt again for a slaw topping. The meat is good enough to stand alone. (At home above the Mason Dixon line, I have to top with slaw, pickles, onion, and sauce to hide the fact that very few BBQ places around smoke their meat right.) The fried hand pies are a must!!! They are reason alone to make a visit here. They were homemade, full of fruit, and freshly fried to a perfect golden brown. You can have them a la mode too! They also have plate lunch specials here, as well as breakfast, burgers, and other sandwiches. The service was friendly and efficient. The location is great and just a block off of 31 in Homewood. The prices were in line with their category. Next time I'm back for either a late breakfast or a burger and I will not leave without a pie. Great old school joint still kickin' and competing well with the trendy options all around. Eating here brought back so many memories. I'll be back.
