Democratic Coffee | Bon Appétit

"GO HERE: for the croissants (and a really nice pourover) at this friendly, not-too-geeky coffee bar, which happens to be part of the main public library in the old city center. ORDER THE: almond croissants and pour-overs. The coffee shop manages to serve some very tender croissants, and they’re serious about the coffee too, roasting their own beans. THE VIBE IS: well, democratic! Library folks (read students of all ages), trendy boutique workers, and pastry fiends flock here. PRACTICAL STUFF: Open every day Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. —Christine Muhlke" - Condé Nast

One of of the best coffee shops I have tried in Copenhagen. The staff were so nice and the barista was excellent. Flat white was done right 👌🏼 And you can’t have a coffee in Copenhagen without the cardamom bun, the buns at Democratic Coffee were so good. Recommended 👍🏼

Google
I don’t get the good reviews because I had one of the worst coffee of my life. And I’m not even exaggerating! I had a cappuccino and it was so bitter and doesn’t taste like a cappuccino. My husband had a latte which was better but still not so good. However the cinnamon pastry was delicious which was the only good thing. Also for the price, they don’t even serve you your coffee you have to take it from the bar. Too expensive for the quality!

The coffee was decent, but nothing super special. Worth a try if you’re passing by, but personally, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. We came in at 4:30pm. The girl (in black shirt) taking our order reminded us they close at 5pm, so the coffee would be in takeaway cups. We said that’s fine, we know the closing time. But only a few mins later, she came over to remind us again. Honestly, it felt a bit annoying. We completely understand you want to close on time, but there’s no need to keep repeating it.

Google
Guess I was expecting too much on the almond croissant, crispy outside but very little fillings and chips on top, not so much butter scent either. I will keep searching for the best almond croissant anyway.

Google
We had a wonderful breakfast here. The pastry is just absolutely delicious. The coffee is also prepared well. The staff are kind and helpful. This coffee shop extends to a library which is really cool especially for people like me who loves to read.

Google
The best almond croissant I’ve had🥐 Really good croissant and cardamon bun👍🏻

Google
Coffee and pastries are of high quality, but price is on higher side. There are other bakeries whetre you can get dimilar quaility for significantly less price.

Google
Coffee was nice. Came here expecting to do some work on my laptop but realized that it was a mistake - the tables and chairs were changed to lower ones so it’s a more relaxed setting for small children and families. Not particularly quiet even though it’s connected to library. It will be a nice place to chat with friends or small children.

Yelp
delicious coffee and espresso - the single origin was really solid. great space attached to the library, they make all pastries in house

Yelp
Can only speak for the cappuccino here which was perfection. Pricey like in most places in Copenhagen but a satisfying cup of joe. What really stood out to me was the location. One half is a coffee shop while the other is a library with a cool vibe. This place seemed like a popular place among the locals.

Yelp
I absolutely love coffee and I can confirm that Democratic Coffee Bar ranked #1 in coffee shops during my visit to Copenhagen. How unfortunate for me that I only decided to try this coffee shop towards the end of my trip! Both the ambiance and service at Democratic Coffee Bar were incredible. The staff were friendly and efficient. Democratic has free Wi-Fi, a good amount of seating, nice decor, and a variety of pastries. You might be thinking that most coffee shops in Copenhagen have these elements. While that might be true, the real star of the show was the *coffee.* I ordered an oat milk cortado, and this had to have been the most delicious oat milk cortado I had during my trip. The flavor, coffee/milk ratio, temperature, and fragrance were all perfect. Kudos to the barista and the coffee blend on this day. I will be back to Copenhagen and back to Democratic Coffee Bar!

Yelp
While on a week-long Copenhagen visit in October 2021, my friend and I visited two to three coffee shops a day. Loving coffee, we were determined to find the best cafe in the city. Democratic Coffee Bar is definitely on our top five list. The space itself is beautiful with a long window table for sitting. They have a full coffee menu and sell pastries in the morning. My latte was creamy and well balanced. They have an area to add sugar to it if needed. The service was friendly and fast and their wifi strong and easy to access.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and friendly staff! We popped in for a couple of quick coffees and were disappointed we had already eaten breakfast. They had so many fresh pastries! I got an iced latte with oat milk, and my husband got a cold brew. Both were delicious. They had two cold brews to choose from, which was a fun option! Would gladly return.

Yelp
Fresh coffee and fresh baked goods? Sounds good to me. Seating is bar style mostly would a couple small tables. More limited but sufficient. Highlights for me are the fresh baked goods making me hungry just from the smell of it. Got the ham and cheese focaccia which they further toasted on the panini grill. The espresso and ice latte was a bit lack luster. The color was rather watery and the flavor not rich. We came for the coffee but turned out the food was better.

Glenn J.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere, great coffee, and cinnamon roll. Library setting is a neat twist.
google avatar

Frances A.

Yelp
Connected to the library. The Wi-fi is free and strong here. There are plenty of tables in the library side or customers can stay inside along the long bar facing the window. That part was fun for people watching. The cappuccino and macchiato drinks are prettily made with oat milk. However, the espresso is not a strong robust flavor as I prefer. Nevertheless a solid choice if you are wanting to take a coffee break from your studies. Or if you are a tourist needing a place to recuperate from a lot of sightseeing.

Yelp
Some of the best croissants I've ever had! They warm the sandwiches and it's pure bliss. English speaking and have pretty good coffee too. Clean area with nice outside lighting.

Yelp
Good, pricey coffee drinks. Efficient service. Our family settled into a table in the bookstore to relax and enjoy our coffees. Nice place to chill.

Yelp
Items Selected: Fruit and Seed Roll with Butter and Cheese Croissant Pain au Chocolate Almond Croissant Chocolate Chip Cookie Reinvigorating Copenhagen's Hovedbibliotek in 2011, and since earning a fair share of press thanks to their use of Sweden's Koppi Roasters and a top-tier Pastry program, Democratic Coffee Bar proved to be a worthy first stop for Friday Breakfast, the Public Library not yet open at the time of an 08h05 arrival but a few guests already present and accounted for with beverages in hand with one group already in the midst of a Skype-meeting. Literally a contiguous space with the Library, only a doorless port separating the multi-storied atrium from a cafe bathed in light with parallel blonde wood bars for service and seating, it was with purpose that a steady line of Danes entered and exited the Bar, the rumors of Pastries selling out long before the place closes up at 19h00 proving highly likely as many gathered up boxes for work, though not before a total of five were bagged or plated and ready to indulge in. Selling both Whole Beans and brewing paraphernalia on black shelving at the far end of the Bar, the equipment behind the counter all top grade, it was as light music played overhead that WiFi was accessed before delving into a soft Roll dotted with dried Fruit and Seeds, the skin featuring a good chew not unlike a Bagel while the inside was naturally Sweet, two slices of Semi-Soft Cheese a far more compelling topping than packaged Organic Butter, though first bites of a Croissant suggested that if this was the same product used for cooking it certainly was not bad, the exterior layers shattering and crisp with an interior that was warm and soft. Attempting to decide between Chocolate and Almond next, the latter by far Democratic's most celebrated selection, it was largely a result of temperature that led to a Pain au Chocolate being tasted next, the core opening up much wider than that before it though the duo of Cocoa cores could have stood to be a little thicker, the Chocolate Chip Cookie softly pulled in half making far better use of the ingredient amidst a base lightly perfumed in Cinnamon but plenty rich with Butter and Brown Sugar. At this point fairly impressed, though a little surprised that everything save for the Almond Croissant had been warm to touch on arrival, it was with expectations built up by both independent and in-house propaganda that "The best almond croissant I have ever eaten" was tasted, the baked, filled and re-baked Pastry well constructed and not overly sweet but a far cry from those in France, San Francisco or even Las Vegas, not to mention Bageriet Brød in the same city at Enghave Plads 7.

Yelp
From the Mortensen art to the lovely cappuccinos & the fresh and delectable house-made baked goods, Democratic has it all. My partner ordered an almond croissant filled with a fantastic filling that literally (used correctly) oozed out when bit into. It was a decadent treat. I was keen on having a slightly less calorific snack and ordered what I thought would be an average-tasting roll with a bit of butter and cheese. The roll, however, was soft, warm and just a bit dense with a sprinkling of poppy seeds throughout & really hit the spot. Smack dab in the uni district, Demo is housed in one of the many stately buildings found in the area. The shop is long and fairly narrow, with seating only along the large, storefront window. We found it to be a great place to pop into after walking at length through the neighborhood. Demo is directly adjacent to the Central Library. One is able to order a bevvie, then walk straight into a small seating area of the library reserved for cafe goers and enjoy it. Patrons of the cafe use the co-ed library toilets. I spent an inordinate amount of time bending the ear of one of the employees. He was nothing but helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly.

Yelp
THE ALMOND CROISSANT HYPE IS NOT REAL. Unfortunately... don't come here expecting the best almond croissant you've ever had. It was way too crispy and had wayyyyy too many almonds on it. I was so excited for it but definitely disappointed after my first bite because of how hard it was. I want my teeth to sink in, not to feel like they are going to break because it's too crispy. If it was actually soft and warm with a slight crisp, it would be something to get excited about. It's not though. They definitely need to work on the texture. Also, the coffee here is horrible. It's so watered down and taste extremely sour. Do the people working here not test out what they are serving their customers? I'm guessing not because if they were, the croissants wouldn't be so freaking hard and the coffee wouldn't taste so sour and disgusting. There's way better coffee literally right across from this place and better pastries too. Democratic Coffee, please actually read your reviews and better your croissants and coffee.

Yelp
Good croissants! Don't expect anything life changing but no complaints. Very cool setting in a library, and the mantra 'coffee, croissants, books' speaks to half of millennials. The refill at 15 kroner is a bargain in CPH.
google avatar

L M.

Yelp
Perfection! Walk in, take a load off after a walk in town. When you walk in, you'd be greeted by the smell of brewing beans with heavenly butter. Follow the smell to the case of croissants, and a friendly baristas!
google avatar

Shakila M.

Yelp
For the culture, had to see if Democratic Coffee has the best almond croissant in Denmark. Granted, it's my only croissant in Denmark but I'm pretty sure the rumors are true. Yes, the best. With a bonus salty/sweet filling that went perfectly with the tartness of my double mocha. Service was pleasant, patient, and helpful without being too cheery at 9am on a Sunday.

Yelp
I found this place when I was researching convenient coffee shops my mom and I could visit while we were in Copenhagen, and I'm so glad we went here. It's a simple coffee shop, with a simple coffee menu - no crazy flavors or creations; yet their coffee is still amazing! Then again, Copenhagen has really good coffee in general, and Democratic Coffee definitely falls under the great coffee category. However, the main reason I wanted to go here was for the almond croissant - it was delicious! It melted in my mouth and tasted like perfection, which I find weird to say because I'm not a fan of almond in general, but this one almond pastry, I like. This particular location is connected to a bookstore, so they have some tables you can sit at inside the bookstore. If you are ever in Copenhagen, I would recommend giving this place a try for a quick coffee run or morning snack :)
google avatar

Jaana S.

Yelp
I come here really a lot. I know they're famous for having the best coffee in town but I don't drink coffee so I wouldn't know. What I do know is that their pastries are other worldly. I've tried their chocolate croissant, almond croissant, and blueberry danish. All of them are really spectacular. The pastry itself, for all three, is buttery and flakey and perfect. The almond croissant has a rich buttery filling. My personal favorite, however, is the blueberry danish. These pastries are GROSSLY overpriced, even by Copenhagen standards, yet I always come back for more. Their hot chocolate, however, is 100% not worth the price tag. You get a tiny little cup full of very average hot chocolate. Tea is not a bad option though but there are cheaper options in the area for that. Get the coffee, probably(?) and A PASTRY!!
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
I came only for the almond croissant hype, and boy did it live up to the hype. Food & Price: For 35kr, ~$5.60 USD, it's small but so, so good. One of the more expensive things in CPH that's actually worth it. It's worth having as a novelty every now and again. Seating: it's attached to the library next door, so there's plentiful seating. Service: Understaffed like every other place in CPH, so there's a bit of a wait time. You order at the counter.

Yelp
Great coffee and lots of cake and croissants. Very friendly staff and conveniently located in the first floor of the library. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
The best cappuccino I've had in a long time! It's simply perfection. Wish this place was next to where I live. Their pastries also look amazing. And the ambiance is cool...next to a library. Meant to try other coffee shops while in Copenhagen, but this is simply too good and it's right next to my hotel, Skt. Petri.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I love the central library! Going to study there alone is one of my favorite things to do. And a good coffee kick is needed in between! This cafe is at the ground floor of the library and can offer this kick for the book eaters! It's also a quite classy cafe. Simple interior, wooden and black colours. The coffee is good, but yeah I am not a real coffee fan so don't count on that! If you get your coffee to go it's cheaper than if you stay there! I always take it with me to my study corner. The staff is always friendly and fast. The fast part is quite unique for Copenhagen and I like that! They also always make a heart to the coffee foam! It's so cute they put effort to that! :) Details are what make something worth more. So if you are around, pop in to see the library and have a coffee break. Or tea! They have 5-6 different kinds of tea if you're a tea person. Enjoy!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Best croissant I've ever had, anywhere. Thin crispy layer on the outside yet so soft and moist on the inside, with a perfect balance in taste (not under or overly buttery). My favorite way of eating it was to peel away layer by layer, then you get to enjoy it for a longer time, and you'll really taste the soft inside with the crispiness lining the outsides of each layer. Their chocolate croissant has the same texture but mixes in the sweetness of the chocolate. Combine all of these with their coffee as you watch people walk by the window pane, and you have a great experience.
google avatar

Darren B.

Yelp
Their almond croissant is for real and was so f*&#ing good! Without question it is up there with the best I've ever had. I wasn't the biggest fan of the espresso, but it wasn't bad, plus I ordered a single and they gave me a double so zero complaints there. The atmosphere lacks much to be desired, but the croissant makes up for it all. I grabbed a couple while in town and another on my way to the airport. Service was really nice too.
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Love it! Seems very popular. Packed when we were there today. The croissant is wonderful! And it's quite big too. Definitely need to go back again.
google avatar

Casey H.

Yelp
Great place to come in and sit down to do lots of work. As the cafe is also connected to the library, finding a place to sit is not that difficult. Just like anyone else, I came here for the almond croissant and holy it was amazing. The pastry was 45 dkk which is pretty pricey, but it was worth every penny. I would definitely come again in my spare time as this is one of the rare places I could find great seating, wifi, outlets, and food.
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
Best pastries in Copenhagen, hands down. Grab a home made croissant and you won't regret it. What I love about this place is that it is in a great location, is filled with super friendly staff and the shop links through to the library. Perfect for the grind (in both senses of the word.)
google avatar

Tucker M.

Yelp
Beautiful coffee, brilliant croissants, and copious books abound. Easy walk from the Strøget.
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
Good food, great coffee, awesome books and a great environment. My brother and I enjoyed a light breakfast and a nice place to sit in this comfy environment. Would most definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jackie C.

Yelp
Democratic is a must stop if you plan to do Strøget or are nearby doing tourist-y things. Krystalgade is a nice street with cool shops - a good break from the crowded tourist-y streets with mainstream outlets nearby. This café offers fantastic coffee (pour-over if you're up for it, although when I went the boiler was down and I couldn't try it), they usually have a lunch combo which consists of a delicious sandwich + drip coffee for around 50 dkk. The staff was kind to explain the broken boiler situation and assured that I would love my coffee + sandwich, which I did. The only thing I would have to say is that I wish there were more comfortable seating - they only have high chairs which can be uncomfortable if you plan to stay for a few hours.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Good coffee, but they add sickly-sweet syrup to the iced lattes. I know it's a thing in Copenhagen, but most places usually ask first. Coffee Collective's iced lattes are leagues beyond.
google avatar

Priscilla S.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic coffee! Also got the famous almond croissant! Now I know why this place is so popular - reasonable prices especially for a student, and the croissant is so so good! Extremely friendly staff too. Will definitely come back here again and again!
google avatar

Hanna M.

Yelp
Heavenly gooey almond croissant..! Nice ginger lemon tea with real ginger. A real flu-killer. The coffee and barista side has great inspiration for exceeding expectations.
google avatar

Sally K.

Yelp
I just got two words for you: Poppy Seeds. Apparently, practically every single baking good served here is stuffed to the brim with poppy seeds. I'm not saying it's not bad, its just a peculiar little thing you'll notice when visiting the joint. I first saw this little café one morning when walking past the Cph central library and saw their funny little coffee sign outside the store - an arrow pointing into the store with 'coffee' and another pointing away from the store with 'no coffee'. Simple and funny, and the coffee smelled delicious so I popped in... and ended up spending the entire day sitting in their designer furniture, tapping away on my laptop and drinking good coffee. In the morning, they serve a freshly baked bun with butter and cheese (delicious and full of poppy seeds to get stuck between your teeth) and a large latte for as little as 50 DKK. For lunch, they serve veggie and meaty panini's (you guessed it, with poppy seeds :-) - but make sure to ask them to heat it through and through as they tend to take it out prematurely. They also serve all day croissants and cookies - no poppy seeds - but I didn't try these. For me this is a great place to hang out to get some work done when I have a few things to do but don't want to stick around at the office. The wifi is free and quite decent, and being located in a library you have any book you might need close by. I quite fancied it and would go back sometime soon.

Yelp
Good coffee, good pastries, nicely located by library. A lot of Jack Johnson, not enough ABBA.
google avatar

BO P.

Yelp
Very good coffee. Try Kenya V60. Croissant also very good. Nice place to spend time during rainy day. They have magazines in English. The only problem with the place - they are closed on Sundays.
google avatar

Mati M.

Yelp
Nice place. Delicious chocolate croissant.right by the public library. Friendly staff
google avatar

Aida K.

Yelp
This was the best coffee bar we visited while on vacation to Norway and Denmark. The location next to the library was really nice because there is plenty of seating plus the ambiance was really cool. But the best part was the coffee and pastries. We had cappucinos and pastries and oh my goodness, so good. Still dreaming about the almond croissant. Go here now.
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
These guys need to get their act together. Granted, it was very busy, but I ordered a regular drip coffee. They said they just ran out so it would take a few minutes. So I step aside. After about 10 minutes, they serve someone else coffee and forget about me. I remind them, and they give me my order (without milk, like I asked), so I again had to wait for them to be free to ask for milk. Other than that, the place is very cool, probably hip to a fault. But way too crowded.
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
Attached to the Copenhagen city library, this place makes a delicious cup of coffee served alongside what might be one of the best croissants I've had in my life. Everything good related is top-notch... Service is a little dry, but they are super focused on making you the best coffee possible.
google avatar

Gréta S.

Yelp
No need to elaborate about how good the coffee is. It is good, but lacking in consistency. Sometimes it's just good, sometimes it's so damn good. The almond croissant though, is so out of this world, insanely good and would make a grown man cry.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Server taking order was very friendly. But the individual behind the espresso machine was incomprehensibly poor at his job the afternoon we visited: my double shot was served as single; upon mentioning the error, he just dumped in the other half of the shot into my cup; what was presented to me was not espresso but some thin brownish solution which was undrinkable, so I just left it at the bar. The danish and sodas that I had purchased for my family were exceptional.

E G.

Yelp
Very chill place close to a library. The coffee is good and the almond pastry very good as well a better one that i have tried. Employee was very nice as well. Just a good place to hang and study which is what i wanted to do
google avatar

Magnus K.

Yelp
This place serves an exquisite cup of Coffee and the best croissant I've had in Copenhagen so far. This is a busy coffee-shop ideal for a quick coffee and croissant before embarking on your day. It's not a place you wish to linger in, as there are no cozy sofas or dim lights. I head of the good coffee and the award-winning croissant and had to try this place out. I came into a busy coffeeshop, which works also works as a café for the neighboring Public Library. 2 people were at work and they were busy. I cleared the empty plates and cups from the seat I was going to occupy, placed it on the counter and ordered a flat white (6cl espresso 12 cl steamed milk) and a croissant. I paid on order and the croissant was served. A little later, my order was called and I went to collect my coffee. Standard Procedure. What wasn't Standard was the level of taste incorporated in both the flat-white and croissant. The taste of the coffee was complex and based on the consistency the milk was correctly steamed and tempered. The work of a skilled barista. The Croissant was crunchy on the outside, with the smell of nutty burnt butter, and soft, gooey yet still elastic on the inside. The way a croissant should be. The combination of the two should be the definition of synergy, and I dare not even dream of what adding a cigarette (if I still smoked on a daily basis) could do to heighten the experience. Even though the place doesn't invite you to linger, and it isn't exactly a cozy atmosphere, I stick by my YELP mantra and grade it based on TASTE. I don't rate a place on MY preferred type of atmosphere. I rate it based on what context the atmosphere is based on. This is a busy cafe meant for a quick coffee and a croissant. It has not been designed to linger in. That's not its purpose. I'm not gonna let the self cleaning part drag this place down either. A restaurant consists of many processes and interactions, several of them which the guest must partake in. My idea of being a helpful guest is also easing and effecitivizing the relationship between my server and I, hereby helping when needed. I don't expect a red carpet rolled out, and I do believe that a more cooporative and assisting relation with the staff creates a better experience. Therefore, It deserves the 5 star rating as it operates excellently inside the frame it has created.
google avatar

Torsten H.

Yelp
This is among the best Coffee Bars in the world, the craftsmanship the quality of the own roasted beans, leaves you with an extraordinary taste experience. Their croissants are also second to none. The staff know about the coffee and what they are doing, so ask and you will get a dedicated lecture on the brew you enjoy.
google avatar

Victoria C.

Yelp
Delicious almond croissant and coffee to prepare for a day of wandering around the city.
google avatar

Natalia K.

Yelp
Double espresso - that's my morning alarm. Need a breakfast? Their croissant with almonds will give all what's needed to start a day
google avatar

Elsa A.

Yelp
Average cappuccino, OK croissant , probably yes, they are the best in Copenhagen, which does not mean they are to die for. Nice place where you can grab whatever you are having and sit in the library next door.

Yelp
Their pour-overs and espresso drinks are fantastic, but do not miss out on their croissants.
