The 23 Best Restaurants in Montevideo, Uruguay | Eater

"Manuel González Arnao, Santiago Perdomo, Diego Fernández, and Alfonso Cretenze met in the kitchen at Montevideo’s bar El Mingus. After years working and traveling abroad together, they decided to open a little corner bar in the Cordón neighborhood, at the time a sleepy area far from the most popular restaurants in the city. There they stood out from the beginning, with tables made from upside-down barrels and a tiny open kitchen. The space was so basic that the quartet called it De Morondanga (“minimal” in local slang). The stuffed mushrooms, prawns from Valizas (a fishing village on the Uruguayan coast), and clams from La Coronilla are the most famous dishes on the menu. All the food is served tapas-style, and dinner costs about $25 per person. In 2021 they expanded to a second restaurant across the street with a larger dining room and more kitchen space, called Nueva Esquina (“New Corner”). They don’t do reservations, so it’s best to get there early around 7 p.m. when they open. — MB" - Marcela Baruch

Very cool place! You order off a board with handwritten dishes of the day, no menu. The food is excellent, very creative and flavorful. Sharing tapas portions, very good value for money. Try the house made grappamiel drink if you like sweet drinks. No reservations, if you come around 8 you should find a table.

Sit at the bar, have a drink or a few and watch the amazing chefs put together absolutely delish small plates. I wish I could have tried everything. Get there early as it get busy fast. Super fun spot with amazing food. Our favorite spot we have been to in Uruguay

Best food I had in Montevideo, easily, especially the mushrooms and provolone. Very nice server dude (no idea how they work in English since I spoke Spanish). Location is cozy as well - sat outside, they have some heating elements pointed at the tables in chilly days. This would be a particularly good tapas bar in a Spanish tapas neighborhood, let alone in Montevideo. This style of tapa is deliberately vague when it comes to dish names and explanations so it’s better for people with few allergies/restrictions who are fine with ordering whatever sequence of random letters sounds best. Interesting wines too, and good pricing. THEY ONLY TAKE DEBIT CARDS, worth noting, but prepaid travel cards like Wise work.

Unique dining experience! Our server took the time to explain the dishes to us (he spoke English for us which was much appreciated). The menu is a little hard to understand without further explanation, but everything was delicious and mouth watering. Very cool presentation and blends of flavours !

If you're visiting Montevideo (or live here!) this place is a MUST! The menu is written on a black board every day. The ingredients are fresh and food incredible. Service is great and the prices are fair!

Sitting at the bar I enjoyed a chef's table tapas experience. Incredible staff, incredible food. This is a small restaurant so you need to be here early if you want a seat. A true experience!
