The 38 Essential Stockholm Restaurants

"This is one of the world’s oldest restaurants, operating at the same Old Town address since 1722. Quite recently, chef Filip Fastén from restaurant Agrikultur took over the ownership, which is reflected in the menu, still featuring classic dishes, but with increased focus on high-quality ingredients and smart presentations. For centuries, “Freden” has been the meeting place for famous authors, singers, and songwriters, and the original interior remains remarkably intact. Come for the atmosphere and traditional Swedish classics like pickled herring with Västerbotten cheese, cabbage and meat pie with caramelized whey, or the all-time-favorite dessert, hot rosehip soup with almond cake and ice cream. Good Swedish food. Vegetarian options clearly marked on the menu. The 3-course menu was adjusted for gluten-free without a problem. The downstairs vaulted cellar was romantic and historic but the upstairs seemed to have a bit more character, so we finished the evening upstairs at the bar. The bartenders could tell us about the different akvavits and the flavor profiles. Great selection and variety of snaps. They have their own draft beer and an in-house akvavit too.

Tucked into a cozy spot in the heart of Stockholm, this restaurant delivers a polished yet unpretentious take on classic Nordic comfort food. The Swedish meatballs were beautifully seasoned, served with a creamy swirl of mashed potatoes, zingy pickled cucumber, and a vibrant burst of lingonberries. It’s a familiar dish done exceptionally well. Even more impressive was the slow-cooked lamb, served atop a wild mushroom medley with seasonal greens and crowned with a delicately crispy egg yolk. The lamb was tender, richly flavorful, and perfectly complemented by the earthy depth of the mushrooms, a dish that felt both comforting and refined. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere struck a balance between rustic charm and modern refinement. Prices are fair for the quality, though portions lean slightly elegant over hearty. Overall, a lovely spot for both visitors and locals seeking something traditional but elevated. I'd return in a heartbeat.

The service here was amazing! The atmosphere incredible. It felt authentic! The food was delicious and big portions too! We had drinks as well which just topped everything off! Wish we could go back!

Google
Hidden gem! It’s really hidden - took us three passes to find it. The food just good. From the salad to the fish. You have to try it.

We found this restaurant through a mention in a travel description of a site that we were checking out. The outside is not an eye catcher, but we loved the authentic interior. I can see why they have been around since 1722. The maître D was a bit brusque but since we didn’t have reservations but still found us a table. The food was wonderful. We each had the traditional meal of Swedish meatballs with lingonberries and mashed potatoes. I am so glad we didn’t share a plate. Everything was delicious. Our waiter was excellent. We would definitely eat here again, but make a reservation. It is a great location for anyone visiting the old town area of Stockholm.

Had the most splendid meal here. The staff are super kind and helpful , great wine pairings with the food which is flavorful, good portion sizes and fanatic desserts.

Google
I’d rate 10 stars if I could. Both food and service are above and beyond!!! Staff provided excellent and attentive service. Herring and foie gras mousse are both satisfyingly savoury. One of the very few meals that “wowed” us. Highly recommended.

Google
Absolutely wonderful dinner! Had the traditional meatballs, which were fantastic, but the beet starter was really special. Terrific place - highly recommend.

Yelp
Beyond amazing! I had never had slightly salted cod with shrimp , sugar snap peas and horseradish in a brown butter and it was spectacular. The ambience inside was lovely. True candlelight with tables close enough to be cozy, but not too close. The service was on point. And not overbearing. I would highly recommend eating here.

Yelp
We had a very pleasant dinner of authentic swedish food and a bit too much authentic swedish schnapps last night. The swedish meatballs were definitely the star, 3 of us got them and we were all practically licking our plate clean. In addition we got skagen toast and steak tartare appetizers, which were both also quite good. Lastly, we paired swedish schnapps with each course, and while it's perhaps not my favorite liquor, it fit the moment, and the waitress did a very good job explaining the different ones to us and helping to pair them with what we were eating. It was a very cozy restaurant with fantastic service, highly recommend!

Yelp
This place has it all!! I'll tell you first that the food was excellent, more on that later. This restaurant is over 300 years old in this location. There is some historical references that may date the restaurant name back even further, but not at its current location. We were able to take a tour of all the nooks and crannies of this place and it is fascinating. Upstairs they have a room that is always used when the council members of the Nobel Prize for Literature meet, which they have been doing for years. They have a main floor for dining and the bar. Then they have a lower floor for part of the kitchen, dining and restrooms and then finally they have the lowest level. At one point in time, this level was unknown and completely covered. They had to excavate this cellar and they turned it into a dining room. Interspersed throughout this property are the stories of the famous people that would routinely visit, and where they would sit each time they came. There is so much history here! Needless to say the service was very good as our server was kind enough to give us this tour and recount the stories of old. And finally the food. I really wanted Swedish Meatballs to round out my visit to Sweden. I had tried some at a different restaurant that could have been pulled out of a frozen bag. Dining here, I found the real deal. These meatballs were fresh, tender and nicely flavored. The gravy was perfect, again freshly prepared. The lingonberry, the cucumber had exceptional flavor. It was so delicious and I was thrilled to finally have found excellent Swedish meatball in Sweden!!

Yelp
While we didn't order any food here, we did order a lot of drinks! We were a party of 5 and they were able to accommodate us slowly overtime as more of us joined the table. We were lucky that on a Friday night in October the place wasn't absolutely packed to the point of not having any seating for us. The service was great - our many servers were attentive and brought out our drinks in a timely manner every time. The aesthetic of this place is awesome and it truly does feel like the oldest bar in Stockholm (as they claim). The server told us that this is their 300 year anniversary (in 2022) so that was pretty awesome and a cool feeling of being in there. Getting to the bathroom requires you to walk downstairs but the passage way to get down there is very cool. It's almost eerie but in a good way. Overall I loved the experience and glad that I came here!

Yelp
A wonderful experience to have our first group dinner at this historic place. We were wow'd by the decor and historical significance. We occupied the private dining area upstairs. The room has high ceilings and beautiful candle light chandelier. We had a three-course dinner. The most memorable was the starter. An uniquely Swedish plate with fish roe on top of sour cream and served with the best tasting toasts. The second course was beef Wellington paired with an excellent 2016 vintage Brunello. The final desert course was a chocolate cake paired with an aromatic Sauternes.

Yelp
I'm not exaggerating when I say that this restaurant is in my top dining experiences EVER! I would go back to Stockholm just for an opportunity to dine here again. It is the oldest restaurant in the country (nestled in the heart of gamla stan) and among the oldest in the world, and dining in the original underground vaults is definitely the best ambiance choice. You start the night surrounded by candlelight with a glass of cava. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helped us have a traditional Swedish dining experience - especially starting with a trio of herring preparations, house-made dill & fennel snaps, & a mini beer & eating it all in the traditional fashion. I followed that up with a truffle stuffed rooster that was heavenly. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list, and an old organ serves as the bar for the vaults. Further, the price points are surprisingly less expensive than expected for a restaurant of this quality. This place is a MUST visit if you ever find yourself in Stockholm! Food: A+ Drinks: A Service: A Ambiance: A+

Yelp
One of the worst food I ever had. This restaurant gives a bad name to the term "tourist trap" My entrecôte was a thin slice of fat and stringy mussels covered with thick layer of combination of balsamic vinegar and mayonnaise Small piece of potato cake was brought stone called. Young waitress apologized and promised to bring new hot potato, but just to come back 15 minutes later saying that kitchen is swamped and small 2"x2" piece of potato cannot be replaced My wife's chicken was barely warm. What sold chicken was a promise to accompany chicken with chanterelles, however the dry mushrooms were not re-hydrated and tasted like a dry pieces of wood. Even drinks were diluted and barely had any alcohol. It was our only night in Stockholm and we were hopping to have a memorable meal. What a disappointment!!!

Yelp
Great Swedish meal. The food was good, but the service made it great!!! Try the Schnapps and if you ask nicely maybe the staff will sing for you

Yelp
I am sad to say, because this restaurant has been around for hundreds of years, that 'Den Gyldene Freden' is no more. The outer shell is there. The food is not. My wife and guest could not finish their Swedish meatballs. Too dry and too salty they said. I sampled and the meatballs seemed baked in a oven (what they might do at a school cafeteria) and texture and taste-wise, much like the frozen meatballs you buy at a Swedish supermarket. The potato purée was salty to the point where you wonder if it had been done for sake of preservation. And my food? Well I ordered the fish soup. It had little fish in it: small awkward pieces of salmon and cod - not the fillet, but more like the tail of the fish. Shrimp was used to garnish the soup but none found "in it". Instead most of the content was boiled potatoes(!). The soup itself (see image) was clearly 'separated' - most likely from aggressive or repeated reheating as a layer of fat was floating around like a tanker oil spill on the top of the bowl. It tasted like salt with a touch of dill. I could not finish it. Service was a bit slow starting out and not very enthusiastic, but still OK. Waiters were clearly trained professionals, but at one point I noticed one of the waiters pouring a bottle of wine into another bottle to consolidate them into one. I get that this is something they might do with non sparkling wine, but to do that in the presence of guests (this was in the middle of the restaurant floor) to me seemed to show a great disregard toward the guests. And he clearly knew better. I think that, more than the poor quality of the food exemplifies what this restaurant has become: a classic tourist trap just looking to serve guests that are never to return. Now, I'm not much for state intervention, but given the heritage of this restaurant I think it would be appropriate to assume ownership of it and ensure quality. Lastly, if you're in this area looking for high end but traditional Swedish food: go a bit further (15-20 min) and go to Sturehof instead. It is ALWAYS good.

Yelp
Rustic, classic food. The restaurant isn't even labeled, and still highly popular among locals. That really says something.

Yelp
I happened upon Den Gylfene Freden my first night in Stockholm, but kept moving in search of a "better" place for dinner (I ended up at Marten Trotzig, which earned only three stars from me). But I am glad I got a chance to circle back and have a meal at the oldest restaurant in Stockholm (founded in 1722) on my last day here. This was by far the best meal I had in Stockholm. Den Gylfene Freden offers a lunch menu, which has reduced prices over dinner (this was a reason why I had initially moved on that first night). After being seated and ordering, I was offered fresh bread and Swedish crackers (you pick out from a basket the server brings). As a starter, they offered me a small cup of soup. I tasted like lobster bisque. It was a nice way to start lunch, especially after walking around Stockholm in the cold morning. I decided to start with the pickled herring three ways. It was good! The herring also came with a side of boiled potatoes. One could probably just have this and the bread as a full meal. However, I really wanted to try the fish and shellfish stew (I've seen this dish at other restaurants), so got that for my main meal. O. M. G. The stew was amazing! I only wished it had more broth (tomato based). It was chocked full of salmon, white fish and vegetables. The broth had a perfect taste to it. The shellfish were served separately, which I thought was curious, but in the end decided it was probably to keep the flavors fresh in the stew. The ambiance is of an old-world tavern with small wooden tables at benches along the sides of the room and small wooden chairs. Service was very good. I had sparkling water, which was complementary (surprise!). The server was very attentive but like most restaurants here in Stockholm (and Europe in general), they are "slow" to bring the check. I was fine as this gave me time to finish my water (a whole carafe was brought to me) and Instagram my photos from the morning's site-seeing. I would definitely come back to Den Gylefene Freden, and highly recommend to all visitors to Stockholm. I would try dinner out here as well. The menu was much more extensive, and is worth checking out if you want items outside of the basic Swedish dishes (which is fine for lunch).

Yelp
Again somewhere we have been many times since 1989 but not for some 17 years It is touristy, yes but you have to go there (or Fem Sma Hus)...class act too But we looked at the menu, looked at each other and said...we are struggling to choose something whether starter or mains....so re-review...and with a lot of help from our very knowledgable waitress, we chose The charcuterie platter...she explained that their ex chef who runs their place directly across the road had put this dish together...some German sausage, sliced pork, and a few other choices...to share...very nice though not either so keen on the sausage in terms of consistency, bit soft Poached salmon and gravadlax...with potato, one creamed and sliced, the other boiled...excellent...could not manage the last few mouthfuls of gravadlax A very nice bottle of Cotes du Rhone Vidal-Fleury but also with the salmon, 4cl of their house schnapps and also of Hallands Flader...the first inoffensive, the latter very refined and delicate...elderflower....very nice 1,407 sek before tip A good evening in the end after the initial "we are going to have to leave because we can't eat any of this" feeling. Fortunately not and most enjoyable

Yelp
I had the great fortune of traveling to Stockholm on business in October 2015, and a Swedish friend of mine recommended this restaurant. My colleague and I barely made it here in time after a late evening arrival, and after a quick cab ride and a walk in the old town (where cars are not allowed), we were seated to a very authentic & delicious meal. If memory serves, I ordered the following: - Starter - S.O.S.: Herring and Baltic herring with Swedish cheese flavoured with aquavit and boiled potatoes. - Main - Zorn's Meatballs: Classic Swedish meatballs with potato puree, cream sauce, pickled cucumber, and lingonberries. Spectacular service. Authentic ambiance (this is where Nobel Prize Laureates dine). Fabulous food.

Yelp
This is a must if you're staying in Old Town (Gamla Stan). We scoped out this restaurant before we came and were so intrigued by the classic Swedish meatballs. Eats: Crab cake Pate Steak tartare Swedish meatballs The gin and tonics had a slightly sweet (fruity?) flavor. If you want something a little stronger, my friend's vodka blueberry lemonade will be up your alley.

Yelp
My Europe travels came at a slightly higher cost since I wanted to eat at a Michelin rated establishment in every country. So it was very unfortunate that I had to cancel out of the Frantzén and the second backup at Mathias Dahlgren because our flight times had changed, which sent me scurrying to the Michelin site to select another restaurant. Given that I would be exploring Gamla Stan, I was lucky to land last minute reservations at Den Gyldene Freden via the Bib Gourmand list. Den Gyldene Freden is located conveniently in the heart of Gamla Stan and is very accessible by foot. We were seated immediately given that I scheduled in right at the start of the lunch period. The restaurant is a nod to the past in keeping the structure and interior very much what it may have looked like 300 years ago. Add in the warm and comfortable wood furnishings and I felt right at home. The menu is reflective of Swedish cooking: simple, clean, and local produce and meats and fish are utilized extensively. I opted for the cabbage rolls while the other opted for the classic meatballs. We also ordered the smoked salmon as an appetizer, which came accompanied with copies slices of their local bread, which was amazing, by the way. Entrees ordered were Zorn's meatballs and the stuffed Cabbage rolls. Both came accompanied with local produce which was incredibly fresh. The food was incredibly simple and good. It was an interesting way to experience local Swedish fare. I am appreciative of their clean approach to food: straightforward and no frills. Add in kind service and the rating of 5 stars is no contest. Thank you for our wonderful experience!

Yelp
We made a reservation for lunch at 1 PM, and the restaurant was quite empty. Walking in, it's like going into a house. The interior was decorated nicely, and there were candles on every table. The food and service here are great; our waitress was really nice. I decided to come here because of its Michelin Bib Gourmand status, and it didn't disappoint at all. [FOOD] We each got a complimentary starter soup that was made of pumpkin, orange, and some other stuff in a chicken broth. It was pretty good and had a subtle tangy taste Yellow Split Pea Soup with Pancakes (Dish of the Day; Pancakes are Dessert): The soup was pretty good; it was light, and the peas gave some texture to it. The dish comes with a side of mustard (really good) and pork (super good). The two sides with the soup came together very well. It was a solid dish. The pancakes were also really good. You get 3 crêpe-like pancakes and a side of cream and lingonberry jam. The cream is very light and not sweet at all. The jam was a little tart but still good (honestly I liked eating it better by itself). And for only 135 SEK, this dish was definitely worth it. Zorns Meatballs: Probably the most well-known dish here, I really enjoyed it. The meatballs are pretty perfect and flavorful. The pickles are light and sweet. The mashed potatoes are buttery and smooth. The lingonberries on the side give a small bit of sweetness to the dish. It was really good and worth the rave. Caramel Custard: This was pretty much just flan, but it was a sweet and light. I enjoyed it. [OVERALL] Come here for lunch. There's pretty much no reason not to. The bill came out to 440 SEK (~$52), and that's pretty cheap for the type of restaurant and the amount of food we got. Tip: hot water is free! It was a great experience, and I would definitely come again if I ever get the chance.

Yelp
Yum this place was great. Both my husband and I enjoyed our meals. The restaurant had a nice comfy atmosphere and the wait staff was friendly. Excellent Swedish meatballs and the duck was cooked perfectly. Despite being in a tourist area it's not a tourist trap it was full of locals too.o

Yelp
This is probably one of the best known restaurants in Stockholm for historical reasons (founded in 1722 and with famous artists having been there over the centuries). The milieu and ambience are amazing where you really can feel the centuries of history, expecting to see Carl Michael Bellman playing on his lute in a corner. The staff working were nice and attentive all the time. I was there with a larger group so we had had to preorder the food based on a couple of set menus. I had picked the main course with fish. I have to say that the food overall underwhelmed me, it definitely didn't meet my expectations. My starter was a cold meat plate, Brawn of pork from "Rocklunda" with lemon poached apple & potato cream. Nice flavors, some classical holiday seasoning. My fish entre was arctic char (röding) with confetti on crab, roe, cabbage, potatoes & shellfish vinaigrette. The meal was quite tiny, and would have benefited with some potato/rice/polenta served with it. The "confetti" that supposedly included potatoes was very flat and unsubstantial besides the roe. This was just a true meh as I left hungry, and felt that this was not a place to write home about... The dessert, vanilla cooked pineapple with blood orange sorbet, almond & caramel cake, had a very nice combination of flavors!

Yelp
Great food, almost 300 year old restaurant and the portions are perfect. I had the herring for appetizer, the lamb and sausage for main and the sorbet and ice cream for dessert. The Herring is so tender and juicy and the lamb is perfectly seared and lightly grilled. I usually don't finish the full plate, but on this day I did. Usually after a full course, I feel stuffed, other than amazing quality in food, the most amazing part is the portion is perfect, it actually allows you to eat through the entire course without feeling stuffed. That to me is the best part, being able to walk out of the place without bending over and groaning. A must try if you are in Stockholm.

Yelp
Very romantic with dim lighting and cozy candle lit tables. We were lucky to get squeezed in without a reservation in a Friday. Would definitely recommend a reservation. Fantastic wine list. Wines and beers are recommended on the menu with entrees. I like that touch. My wife and I both had the Swedish meatballs with lingonberries and mashed potatoes. The meal was excellent.

Yelp
Den Gyldene Freden refers to the treaty of Nystad in 1721 between Russia and Sweden which to their surprise left most of what is now Finland in Swedish hands (hence 'The Golden Peace'). The restaurant was opened in 1722 and hasn't changed much since, although it is now owned by the Swedish Academy (who decide on the Nobel prize for literature) who meet there once a week. It was a good meal. I stuck to Swedish tradition and had 'SOS' (various kinds of herring & schnapps) as a starter, and we both had meatballs, mashed potato, pickled cucumber and lingonberries as a main course, then fresh rhubarb, all washed down with a bottle of Syrah. It was all very good but not really haute cuisine. I guess the place is something of a tourist trap serving traditional food, but in spite of that it wasn't that expensive for what it was (around SEK1500 for the meal for 2 of us). The historical atmosphere is very intriguing and interesting, and the service was extremely good. Strongly recommended. Lots of other people obviously think so too as the place was completely full - so it's essential to book in advance.

Yelp
Had an excellent lunch here last weekend, sitting on the small terrace at the front of the restaurant. It's an ideal people watching spot and the sun hits it at about 1:30 so good for that if you are lucky with the weather. The food is ideal for lunch. We shared a dish of pickled herrings and a ham and Jerusalem artichoke salad. Both were obviously simple dishes, but were precisely done and the portion sizes were good - not too big, not too small. By the extraordinarily high standards of Stockholm, this restaurant deserves only four stars but elsewhere it would probably be five.

Yelp
So great - love the old school atmosphere and the food was superb. I was looking for a traditional meal and this was all that, but done in their own creative way. I ate at the bar as I was traveling alone and the atmosphere was perfect, although the downstairs area seemed perfect for a cold night. Enjoy!

Erika B.

Yelp
An absolutely beautiful restaurant, and the menu says it was established in 1722. Great for traditional Swedish food, we both couldn't resist having the Köttbullar and we didn't regret it! We made a reservation about 3 weeks out which was probably overkill, but a few days out is definitely recommended as the hostess turned a couple in front of us away. It didn't look overly busy from the front but it is full of various levels and was actually packed! A delicious and seemingly authentic Swedish experience with lively ambiance - a "musn't miss" if you are visiting Stockholm!

Yelp
Met with some people from work for a business dinner. This place was tucked away in old town and had a real nice ambiance. We were seated in the lower cellar and our waiter was very attentive and helpful. Starters consisted of different types of pickled and smoked herring and some tasty local cheese. They had a couple of craft IPAs by the bottle. There was some excitement over the Brooklyn lager IPA by a couple of the folks. It's okay, but not a big fan of the brewery. Had a Monkey Business IPA as well which was local and I really enjoyed that, so I continued to order that through the evening. I eschewed the fish entrees for the steak tartare. I really love that when its prepared right, and i thought they did a good job. I really enjoyed it. It tasted fresh and was decked out with the raw egg and trimmings including pieces of asparagus. Pretty good overall, the other diners weren't too impressed with their fish entrees though. Nice atmosphere, good service and very pricey it seemed, or maybe we just drank too much :).

Yelp
We absolutely loved this place! We visited Sweden for about a week, and I really wanted some authentic Swedish food. I found this place, and the fact that it was in my favorite part of Stockholm (Gamla Stan) was even better! We could peruse the streets, and stop in for some awesome Swedish food! We both ordered the meatballs, lingonberries, pickled cucumbers, and mashed potatoes. It was delicious! It was the perfect portion, and the epitome of comfort food! The starter was a creamy shrimp soup which was very unique and tasty, plus homemade bread which was great-- fresh and chewy--very good! The decor in this place is exactly like it was in the 1700's when it opened and I loved that--very old fashioned and historic, and a perfect place to eat lunch or dinner. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Lovely ambience and setting with a great wine list and Swedish meal options. Unfortunately our waitress really wasn't attentive or excited to serve us for our celebratory business dinner. She misheard me say champagne (which I already had in my glass...) and opened a bottle of white that she poured and was annoyed after I told her we wanted champagne. We asked if she could tell us a quick story of the history of the restaurant - it took her longer to tell us about how busy she is going to be that "she doesn't have time to stand around for things like that". I would think this is part of the reason why many people want to come and try out this restaurant...not sure we would recommend...

Yelp
This place is lit! Probably the oldest restaurant I visited in my life, founded in 1722, just can't imagine a food place can be existed such a long time. Service is very nice, you can get an English version menu if you cannot read Swedish. For food part, I would say Best traditional Swedish food I have ever had! I went directly to the national dishes of Sweden- herrings for starters and meatballs for main course, all good, fresh and tasty, very authentic as well, as my Swedish friend suggested.

Yelp
It's really difficult to find good Swedish food in the capital, surprisingly, but this place makes up for the dearth of other options. Excellent all round!

Yelp
Restaurant has a rustic decor with cozy dimly lit dining room- we were kindly led to our corner table which was my preferred table to sit. For app we ordered goike souvas to share which was dried smoked reindeer with horseradish cream. It tasted just like bonito flakes and looks of it was comparable as well. The bread that came out to start with were sour bread and lingon berry wheat bread. Lingon berry wheat bread caught me by surprise as the texture when you broke it off felt like banana bread and very moist. I expected it to be dry as most wheat bread are. The berries complemented the wheat flavor very well leaving a perfect blended harmonious taste in my mouth. For entree, I tried beef tartare which was a great portion but I found it a bit too salty. Maybe from the capers but it was definitely a bit too salty for me. I also ordered pan seared salmon trout with fresh dill. Salmon was cooked to medium plus which I enjoyed but the seasoning lacked a bit of a flavor. So overall, yes it's a cute romantic venue but I prob wouldn't return.

Yelp
My first visit was a long time ago, with my lovely dad and his friends...such lovely memories....around 15 years ago. It was a cold cold February night. We walked from the Grand Hotel, it was so nice to enter this albeit dark entrance, a respite from the cold...seeing ladies changing their boots into nice heels. I call still see in my mind's eye all the dishes I ordered.....the herring with little potatoes, the turbot! (OMG....was amazing)...actually....I shared my dad's dessert with him. Fast forward to my last visit, with my husband. We had a great meal...I had a fish soup...more like a bouillabaisse. He had the herrings and moose (yikes I said, but it was actually really nice)...somehow, must have been the champagne, the rest is fuzzy....we celebrated his birthday... :) One day, we hope to go back there with our little girl....

Yelp
My dear lovely restaurant the reason you are so short of a Michelin star is your completely careless staff. Since 17 century you were serving fine people of Stockholm with the food and wine and beer, Unfortunately nobody was able to recognize your achievements for years. So I understand that one day you decided to give up and just start serving tourists . Oh those poor poor tourists who don't know anything better than inflight magazine recommendation. Mediocre food along with the terrible wait stuff completes a picture of you. It is 2014 and I ask you for a wifi password so can call my uber after spending 3 hours and $450 USD and I get completely ignorant annoyed answer with 3 networks available "I cannot help you". So I say I paid my money now you don't give a f$ck about me, right? So f$ck you. Sincerely

Yelp
We came here so I could eat Rudolph... Great service, great ambiance, and the food was quite good, although a bit expensive. We started with the scallop and langoustine appetizer and it was ok, but nothing special. After we finished that, we dug into the herring salads they brought in small bowls and that was soooooooooooooo good! Definitely my favorite part of the meal! Each variation tasted fantastic and the cheese and 3 types of bread were a great compliment to the dish. mmmm... mmmm...mmm! I chose the reindeer fillet as my main as the sausage was partially pork (booo!), and it was super tender melting into my mouth. I had asked for pumpkin as my side and they brought mashed potatoes, which were just average. Overall, great experience!

Yelp
I really wanted to like Den Gyldene. It's a very pretty resteraunt in a great location. The food was good but the service was just awful. Although they did offer us a free desert to try and make up for things once an experience goes bad it's hard to make up for it.

Yelp
We loved this place! We pay homage to the great Swedish Academy. This is a great place to dine. Great food, service, and we loved speaking with the locals. Lots of history in this 1722 tavern, where the Nobel Prize winners are determined. There is a "cave" like room near the bathrooms, which is pretty cool to see. I heard that upstairs has a beautiful room where big decisions are made. I had the artic char and Sav. Blanc from South Africa, which were both good. I also loved their bread too.

Yelp
Authentic Swedish food recommend by our tour guide. I went there a couple of months ago with friends and it was a good time. I ordered meatballs with lingonberries and they were delicious, although pricey, like almost everything in Stockholm. Pretty good vibe as well, given that this restaurant is in the middle of Gamla Stan.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place walking around Gamla Stan. The menu looked traditional swedish and it was a beautiful old building where the restaurant has sat since the 17th century. The herrings were amazing. Lamb was excellent. Service was very good. Probably the best restaurant during my 5 day stay in Stockholm

Yelp
The service is fantastic. The portions are huge. As Americans, we tried the herring starter. Our Swedish friends called us brave but it was delicious. Their house made boar sausage is wonderful. The meatballs are a Must order. It is a pricier place but you are paying for atmosphere. It is well worth a visit

Yelp
Apparently this is Sweden's oldest established restaurant, older than even the United States! Its a pretty fancy place, so were nothing nice and dressy. Fresh, warm bread was served at the beginning, which contains some delicious berries. We sampled the foie gras and steak tartar, before moving on to the main course. I had the salmon, and some other members had the fried pigion. I have to say, the fried pigeon was amazing! Knowing that there is one less pesky bird around, pooping everyone, made it taste ever better! Well... the pigeon was probably raised specifically for eating, but I still felt a sense of accomplishment. The night ended with desert, and I had the chocolate creme , which was very good as well.

Yelp
Excellent Meatballs and Lingonberries! Service is great and ask for the booklet that gives the history. If you want a real Swedish meatball experience, this is one to have and maintain bragging rights with your friends forever.

Yelp
My husband and I took a cruise of the Baltic ports and when friends back home ask what our favorite food was, I say "the white asparagus at Den Gyldene Freden." I know -- how could simple asparagus be that good? But it was, in the hands of a first-rate chef ... my husband agreed his fish dish was excellent too. The service was very good, including an efficient hostess who fitted us in without reservations. As we ate we enjoyed the swirl of other patrons' languages, the way this restaurant has fed travelers for hundreds of years. Go for the history, enjoy the meal and wine!

Yelp
Five star all the way. Extremely good service. Incredible Swedish Meatball dish. The bread was also very fresh. The SOS herring dish was worth a try also! Prices reasonable considering its location in Gamla Stan.

Yelp
In the Old City. Traditional Swedish food. English well spoken and menu available in English. I had the three-course plate including Swedish meatballs, wife had steak tar tar and reindeer appetizer. Service attentive, food good. 5% tip left - this is NOT the United States.

Yelp
A classic. Great traditional food, great service and a ridiculous amount of history makes this place a favorite.

Yelp
It is amazingly tasty, matchless salad about a liver from a duck

Yelp
Best meal during our stay. Great food and service. Ambience was great too, especially down in the basement dining room.

Yelp
I know the 4 and 5 star reviews will certainly outweigh my 2 star review and I so wish I had the wonderful experience that others had but I didn't. My review is based on customer service and if you're like my husband, this drives you nuts and therefore I welcome you to skip passed my review. From start to finish it was a negative experience. Getting a reservation was kind of a pain. The host came off a bit condescending and kept trying to book me at a later table than what the website was showing as available. We went with the online booking (bc it was a preferred time) and it was fine. Not sure why his system didn't show that. Strange. We were seated and the waited promptly provided water which he spilled on the table cloth and table. No apology, just "it's only water". He then came to take our order: cheese pie for appetizer, veg dumplings entree for me and meatballs for husband. They're out of the cheese pie and the veg dumplings...kind of annoying... so I ordered the herring appetizer as my main. He took our drink order: cocktail for me and wine for husband. My husband's wine comes out and his meatballs shortly thereafter. Waiter says my herring will be out in 4 min. which I found odd bc my dish is not cooked... I then ask about my cocktail and he asks me to repeat which cocktail I ordered. He then brings me a drink that is not what I ordered so I tell him this and then he tries to tell me they are out of my cocktail!!! I honestly felt like I was being punked. I just looked at him and said, "you're kidding right?" And he says he'll figure it out and be right back with my drink?! So at this point my husband has finished his entree and I haven't even gotten mine yet. (I told him to eat- not worth his meal getting cold). Again keep in mind, the herring appetizer is not cooked - there is no reason it should take so long. Finally it comes out with my cocktail after my husband had already finished his meal. What a joke. I woofed it down and we left. The food is good though very very pricey (think 370sek for flounder). The service is atrocious. Like I said, I'm sure my review won't sway your decision to go but just pray you have a better experience than us.

Yelp
Another fine restaurant that managed to not be touristy at all while being snap dab in the middle of tourist central! Food was superb! The ambiance was also quite incredible... It would be a perfect date night! Overall a fantastic find! And in the middle of restaurants feeding off of unsuspecting tourists too. Awesome!
