Solo travelers are strongly advised against it!
Important in advance: My bad review for "Den Gyldenen Freden" does not refer to the food, but rather to the miserable treatment of solo travelers or individual guests. The food was indeed excellent, absolutely fantastic. I'm sorry the kitchen team has to suffer because of my poor review. Let me state very clearly in advance that my criticism refers exclusively to the poor treatment I experienced as an individual guest.
I was guest at the "Gyldenen Freden" on August 11, 2025. But the problems began already at the beginning of June, when I tried to reserve a table online for just one person. Despite more than two months' advanced notice and trying several different days and times, the response was always " fully booked ." However, when I tested the booking system by specifying two or four people, I could have gotten a table for any day and any time.
So I emailed the restaurant about my experience and asked them to explain the problem. I was then given a reservation for my preferred date in "Stormen", the traditional main dining room.
Upon my punctual arrival, however, I was offered a bar stool at the counter (not for an aperitif, but for dinner) despite several yet not taken tables. When I declined, I was led to a windowless dining room on the second basement floor, which I reluctantly agreed to. Unfortunately, even here, I was led past several empty, even small, tables to the farthest corner of the room, where I was seated at a small table with slightly sloping bench. In Germany, we call this "the cat table"...
My disappointment about the bad table was nearly dispelled by the truly outstanding three-course meal. However, the individual dishes came quite quickly one after the other, with only short breaks inbetween. Dessert was already brought to me while an American couple at the table opposite, who had arrived even before me, were still sitting down to their main course. And that moment I finished dessert, without comment, the bill was placed on my table, followed just seconds later by the credit card reader -- without me asking for either! I still had an almost half-full glass of wine and an almost full bottle of mineral water on the table, which they apparently didn't want me to finish.
When I asked the waiter about the rush he actually said my table was needed for other guests - even though only a third of all tables were occupied throughout the entire evening. There were still plenty of options for small and large groups.
My entire visit lasted about 70 minutes and cost almost €150,00. The food was truly delicious, but as an individual guest, you simply feel unwelcome. The fact that the problems begin with the reservation and continue all the way to the bill shows that there is no coincidence behind this behavior, but rather a principle.
It's simply annoying and ruins any fine dinner!
