How to Get a Table at Tokyo’s Best Restaurants Without a Concierge | Eater

"Chef Zaiyu Hasegawa’s restaurant accepts bookings from both repeat and new customers but handles reservations by telephone during limited hours (which can favor Japanese diners); the restaurant also periodically opens lunch services specifically to accommodate foreign guests." - Rafael Tonon

Disclaimer: Staying at the hotel. Basically I guess when it's not busy, you just come in and seat yourself, they have tables, and bar seats available. Waiter was kind, even if he didn't drink wine to give us a wine recommendation. He tried, which for me is A for effort. Ordered the potatoes bravas, the tomahawk, and the Marriot burger. All of the food was really good, everything tasted awesome, the potatoes had a nice crisp, the sauces were also very good. The burger tasted awesome, no seasoning, but it allows you to taste the meat, the bacon, bread, was also very good. I hate when my bun falls apart, this one didn't. The tomahawk came with roasted veggies, that we thought were burned, but to our delight, they were very delicious. The waiter and the bar guys were super kind and attentive! Again though, came on a not super busy evening. Overall I'd totally eat her again, if it wasnt so pricey. 😂

Good dining spot right inside the hotel next to the pool. Staff was friendly and kind. Our waitress was so kind and her recommendations were fantastic. Enjoyed their drinks and carnita fries.

We were treated like royalty by Aria. The food was fabulous both mornings. The buffet and omelet bar on day one and avocado toast and eggs benedict on day two. Aria also made a perfect bloody mary. Great service and food all the way around. We will return!

Had the most delightful, warm, and efficient breakfast service from JC and his colleagues this morning. Of course, this is a hotel breakfast, so nothing to write home about - but I will say the omelette was pretty darn good for a Marriott buffet. I didn’t get the name of the woman making them on March 11th but she was crushing it!

It was friendly, clean, and opened late so we were happy to have a safe place to go. We parked on the street so we did not have to pay for parking. It was a week night so it was pretty empty and quiet. We tried a cheese and chip dish that was kind of hard to eat because the cheese wasn't melty. My friend had the salad and liked it, I had the milpas soup which is an interesting squash blossom soup with corn. I had never had it and it was fun to try something new. We tried the chicken artichoke pizza and liked it and then we tried the churro dessert. The service was slower paced and very helpful, he brought out to go containers for our pizza and checked on us. The range in price was on the higher end, however we had the place to ourselves and got to try new things! The bathrooms were clean.

Stellar food. So far I've had their salmon bowl - the salmon was perfectly cooked, topped with a creamy tartar like sauce. The fish tacos are also delicious, they come with freshly fried tortilla chips. I typically don't like bbq chicken pizzas but theirs is great. Looking forward to trying the cornflake crusted French toast tomorrow morning.

The food is pretty good here. The pizza was amazing and so were the burgers. The service on the other hand was questionable. During my stay I dined here twice and one of the time the check took about 15-20 min to come out and to be picked up, and on another occasion I was waiting for service for about 25-30min. When you are being served the service is good and kind and good.

Google
Shout out to Diego at the bar and JC at the restaurant! The staff are incredibly friendly and the breakfast food is great. You can either order from a menu or have an omelette custom made at the buffet. The salt & pepper chicken wings were perfectly crispy and the guacamole is fresh.

Yelp
Den is located at the lobby of the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley Hotel. Restaurant is an open inviting dine -in space area as well as outdoor seating! Bar offers daily happy hour specials on beer and cocktails ! It is a very casual breakfast- to - dinner kinda restaurant and Lounge ! Went here for lunch with grandkids. Aria greeted us warmly with a smile and with a cheerful demeanor. It serves mainly American cuisine ! I wanted to be healthy today so just ordered The Roasted Squash Baja Bowl served with zucchini, lime , pico de gallo, avocado, pickled red onion, cabbage slaw, cilantro, black beans, roasted corn, green onion, olive oil , radish, and toasted pepitas. TOO Pricey of $27 for a medium bowl of veggie salad with no meat.

Yelp
Great pizza! Great service. Very reasonably priced. Although it's in. Hotel, the food and service were both outstanding.

Yelp
Inside Marriott Mission Valley lobby. Buffet $25 + tax and tip. Ambience mixed, I like the booth seating decor and two TVs but the table legs get in the way when getting out and kids are all over when trying to get to the breakfast buffet. Value is ok. The food was not hot or cold enough and the coffee cup and spoons not cleaned well! Service was friendly and helpful. Cheese omelette, breakfast potatoes, sausage links, bacon, oatmeal, yogurt, coffee was all meh. Cups not bowls for oatmeal and no chocolate chips. No american cheese, so I got cheddar. Spoons not on tables, difficult to find they were in a cup by the yogurt. For extra, at the coffee bar they had mochas and potato cheese egg breakfast burritos which may need to be heated up.

Yelp
I attended a 3 day conference here and ate at the Den each day. The staff was super friendly and the food came out timely. My husband, daughter and I ordered a few things and split them but each time we ordered the Marriott Burger. It was DELICIOUS each time. Burger was juicy, bun was fresh and the veggies on the burger were fresh and crisp too. The fries that come with them were so good! The fish on the fish tacos was nice and flaky and the flavors of the pickled onions and sauce was yummy. Loved that the tortillas were thin too; they didn't take away from the other flavors. The ahi tostadas we're also delicious. Lots of fresh ahi on each. The turkey sandwich had a generous portion of Turkey and the bread and veggies were fresh. Didn't get to try happy hour but they have good specials. A tad bit pricy for some items but not all. Actually not too pricey considering it is at a hotel. Would definitely eat here again.

Yelp
SUPREME Pizza was definitely undercooked in the middle. Raw dough. Could have used few more minutes in the oven. ALSO, $12.89 for 16oz Budweiser draft beer? While craft beer downtown San Diego is $7-$8? Not sure what Marriott's thinking is here. Quite ridiculous.

Yelp
This is the restaurant located within the Marriott hotel- very convenient and they even offer room service! There are lots of options to eat and plenty of alcohol choices. I got an old fashioned- one of my favorite drinks. As for food we started off with the pretzels. They came out SUPER hot, so we had to wait a little bit before we could touch them. The sauced served with the pretzel bites were decent- a stone ground mustard was my favorite of the two. For my main course I got the burger with fries. I'll be honest- I was not blown away. The burger was pretty average and the fries were okay too. The fries were crispy and not soggy, but just had some salt and pepper thrown on the top. The burger had a slice of cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato underneath a bun that was not really toasted. I would have definitely appreciated a sauce or a little toast to my bun to give it an extra oomph. Definitely not worth the price in my opinion (burger with fries was $16). I think that a few extra touches to the dishes would definitely help!

Yelp
This place is located right in the hotel. Not next door, not adjacent, nor behind. Literally inside. So it's obvious the only reason one would actually eat at this place would be if you were staying at this hotel. Even if you are staying at a hotel mission valley there are a lot of food options that are way better, quicker and cheaper. To be fair for a hotel restaurant it's not actually not that bad. The food is standard and pretty average. Stick with the simple stuff (sandwiches, etc) and avoid any of the more creative dishes. The happy hour is ok and the service is very hit or miss. The parking is ample and the ability to not get in a car and leave your hotel room adds some value.

Yelp
This review is about service not food. My family received subpar service at this Marriott restaurant during dinner recently. The restaurant was not at all busy. During dinner we were forced to get up from our seats at least three times to request service. We did so to ask for a menu after waiting for an unreasonable time period and we waited even longer for our order to be taken. We also had to get up from our table to find our server to request a refill on waters, to ask that our empty plates be removed, and to ask for a to-go box. Our empty appetizer dish remained at our table even after we were done with our meal. By the end of the evening our table was filled with empty dishes, at which time I gave up on ordering dessert and coffee. See the attached pictures. During our meal our server never came by to ask how our food was or if we needed anything. When we requested to speak to a manager, another server told us the manager had left for the evening. That server then had our server come by our table to remove the empty plates. The server did remove some plates but the rest were left behind and our server never returned. At this time we decided to bring up this issue with the front desk the next morning. Upon checking out of our room the next morning, we raised our concern with the front desk. The front desk personnel offered a simple and generic apology. No restitution was ever offered. After paying as much as we did for dinner and still leaving a decent tip (maybe the server was having a bad day), we were left feeling shortchanged and cheated on. Was the restaurant under-staffed or was this a racial issue? I'm not sure. Hoping the next customer receives better service.

Yelp
YUCK. It's all disgusting. The bacon looked and tasted like it sat at the bottom of the pan overnight, was warmed up and served. The hash browns tasted like they were cooked in rancid grease. The eggs must have come out of an expired carton of liquid mush because they were tasteless. I ordered wheat toast and was served white even though I repeated wheat to the waitress three times. You might ask why I didn't complain and send it back. I would have if the waitress ever came back to the table. Instead I'll let all of the restaraunt yelp readers know what and how they serve meals.

Yelp
This is the restaurant/bar in the mission valley marriot... i was here for a conference and pretty much stuck without a car...so my only option for lunch was to walk somewhere with no clue where i was going OR i could have a leisurely meal in the hotel restaurant. prices are steep... limited lunch menu ...(not always a bad thing) there were 3 different salads on the menu... i was happy with what i selected... the chicken i added was cooked nicely ...except it had skin on it ...no problem...it was easily removed. I know cooking in the skin gives the meat a good flavor and keeps it moist...but i prefer to have chicken that is cooked without the skin. i had my dressing on the side...it was a really good dressing...but the salad was delish enough to stand on it's own... had a glass of wine...very expensive! $20... the bottle they had was already open so i asked them to open a new bottle and they gladly did so. oh it was cakebread chard in case you were curious. all in all...not a bad experience.

Yelp
An extension to the Marriott Hotel. Serves breakfast and dinner. Not available for lunch. Nice selection of food choices. Haven't tried everything, but a couple stood out, avocado toast and burger. A few selections of wine. A bit pricy. A 9 oz glass would cost you close to $20. Forget purchasing a bottle at the front desk. It's $30 for a bottle of Sutter something brand. Really taking an advantage esp during COVID restrictions.

Yelp
I've definitely experienced better in terms of both food and service. I've tried many things on this menu, crafted by different executive chefs over the years. The following is my verdict as of today. THE GOOD The Marriott Burger is a safe dish. It already comes with bacon and a side of fries with ketchup, so you're guaranteed a flavorful and filling meal. The tomato basil soup with grilled cheese sandwiches also makes for a safe lunch. Not too filling, but not too light either. The rigatoni pasta is served with a load of business on top that I don't find tasty or necessary for a pasta dish, but fortunately you can substitute them out. Design the dish as you like, and the serving is worth the cost. THE BAD The poke dish is beyond not worth the price, as its microscopic serving size could only hope to satiate the appetite of a thief ant. The salmon bowl is unfortunate because of the praise it gets from the staff. With such accolades I expected my fish to be served on a platinum dish from the benevolent hand of Poseidon himself. Imagine my disappointment when I got a chunk of salmon on a bed of choppy vegetables and rice. I'd argue its cost, but to some extent you get what you pay for. Still, overall a disappointing meal. THE UGLY The sirloin steak breakfast (the most expensive breakfast item save for the buffet), is immediately not worth your time and energy because it's impossible to eat. The edges are tasty, but the middle is inexorably fibrous, like chewing your way through an ancient messenger bag. I did not finish my meal. The eggs, roasted tomatoes, and hash browns soaked up about 10% of my sadness. NOTE ABOUT THE SERVICE My most recent stay was odd because my waiters were frequently forgetful. They'd forget a dish here, or a drink there, or a side here. I hope in the future this does not happen again. IN CONCLUSION If your stay is long, perhaps you should find another place to eat, or just order some fries.

Yelp
This a good spot to stop for something quick. The selections are fresh and appealing. Although the restaurant was under construction the ambiance was nice. It took awhile for the waiter to get our drinks but he was informative about why.

Yelp
I had several meals this week at DEN due to a conference here at the Marriott. The food was fine. The service was inconsistent - from very good to extremely poor. The lunch staff and service was very good, even as people joined our table after placing initial orders, the staff was professional and accommodating. The evening service was very poor. I had to assert myself a couple of times to get the bartender's attention and another couple of times to get an order placed. DEN was my only available option that evening or I would have bailed.

Yelp
I ordered the BLTA. The server was super nice. He brought me mt food, or so I thought, but I didnt realize it was a normal burger until I took a bite from it. I called over the older gentleman who wears glasses who I recognized from the bar the night before who worked there. I said I was sorry but I didnt order the burger and id like the BLTA. He just stared at me and then the burger and said, "Well you took a bite from it already..." and took the plate and left. Luckily the nice server came back to give me the correct mmeal. But the other guy had a piss poor attitude (the night before and today). I wish I could tip only my server since the other guy doesn't deserve it.

Yelp
This is the grill inside the Marriott Mission Valley Hotel, and let me tell you my family and I were absolutely amazed! The food wasn't your ordinary hotel food, it was restaurant quality and delicious! I ordered the appetizer quesadilla with pork belly and it was yummy and super big, 4 large pieces. My other family members ordered, the chicken ceaser salad (huge portion) the wing appetizers, and the Marriott burger, all delicious and large portions. We had no idea their food was so good and had been ordering pizza for dinner!! I highly recommend The Den!

Yelp
I love dining at the DEN restaurant during my stays at the hotel. Whether I am just enjoying a drink or having a meal. The HH specials are my favorite but I recently had the salmon bowl entree and it was delicious. All the staff are incredibly nice. My most recent experience with Diego was exceptional!! I highly recommend while staying at hotel.

Yelp
We checked into the Marriott and were expecting to find a Marriott level restaurant. Unfortunately, they were under construction so the restaurant is very limited in its visual appeal as well as its service, especially from the bar we were both in the mood for a burger so we are at the Marriott burger, it never disappoints, and it didn't disappoint this time however, the ambience leaves a lot to be desired and the service was somewhat slow. I feel this is mostly due to the under construction stress - as typically the Marriott is spot on on food.

Gerneral Z.

Yelp
I had the Marriot burger here and it was delicious. We also had the hummus and Mac and cheese. The food was good but not great.

Yelp
Slow service for breakfast. Three people working and they took their orders and served others before me. Even though I was there before them. Overpriced. Eggs were underdone. Had better food at Denny's.
