19 Top Staten Island Restaurants | Eater NY

"Denino’s is Staten Island royalty, but it’s the first name on islanders’ lips when it comes to pizza for a reason. It originally opened as a tavern in 1937 and didn’t even introduce the dish it’s now known for until 1951, when the son of the original owner, Carlo Denino, added it to the menu to accompany beer. It has been in the same location in Port Richmond ever since. The pizza is thin-crust style, with handmade mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce recipes passed down through the Italian family. The garlicky white clam pie is the star of the show, but the M.O.R. (Meatball, Fresh Onions & Ricotta) is a close second. Denino’s has recently added a Greenwich Village location, where they’ve been able to successfully echo the original’s flavors." - Claire Elisabeth

Google
We are from Utah and specifically came to New Jersey for this pizza joint. This was the best pizza I have ever had. I have ate pizza in almost every state and this is by far the best. The staff is friendly and it’s great atmosphere. Loved it

Marian Kelly

Google
In a league of their own - best pizza. Half margherita half vodka with sesame crust was superb. Great service. Very welcoming and friendly. Next time going old school with plain cheese pie, which also came highly recommended. Thank you for a wonderful pizza spot!!

Jennifer

Google
I don’t understand what the hype of this place is. We ordered a half margarita/half sausage both with extra cheese. The pizza dough didn’t taste good, and the pie was too burnt. I tasted more charcoal then cheese or sauce. We just thought it was mediocre, and wouldn’t come back again.

Christopher Turko

Google
The BEST pizza in NJ. Order the sesame vodka pie, you're welcome. Mike, the owner is a pleasure to see, and Joe can throw a pizza like nobody's business!!!! Deninos is hands down the best pizza, period.

Danny Henriques

Google
First time ordering from here, so I can't really give a full, honest rating! I ordered a traditional large pie with pepperoni and sausage cooked well done. It's probably one of the best pizzas in terms of taste, smells and looks. The pizza was very tasty and thin, with no flop and crunchy crust. Definitely stop here for a slice or a pie. I couldn't wait to have my slice.

Robert Allen

Google
Great to dine in. There's a short wait, but it's worth it. They made our half and half pizza to order. Wings were great as well. Eclectic art adorns the walls.

Daniel Sean

Google
One of the best pizzerias in the entire state of NJ. Pizza was cooked perfectly with a nice crunch, and great crust to finish it off. The calamari is a must have, and pretty solid Mozz sticks, and meatballs to add. Great service, very friendly and assertive.

Alright, let me break it down for ya—this place? Forget about it. The worst part? Once your family gets a taste of this pizza, fuhgeddaboudit, you’re never gonna hear the end of it. “Let’s go back! Let’s order more!” And honestly? I don’t blame ‘em. This might be the best pie you can get within 20 miles. Maybe more. The crust? Crispy, just the way it should be. The sauce? Rich, flavorful, got that perfect tang. And the cheese? Melted to perfection. Not too greasy, not too dry—just right. Now, if you really wanna do it right, listen to me—get the sesame seeds on the crust. I’m tellin’ ya, it adds this little crunch, this little extra something that takes it to a whole other level. And if you’re the kind that likes a little heat? Try the spicy calamari sauce on your pizza. That stuff? Game-changer. I mean, who even thinks of that? Pure genius. And yeah, fresh outta the oven, it’s unbeatable. But let’s say, by some miracle, you actually have leftovers. Pop ‘em in the air fryer for a couple of minutes, and boom—it’s like you just got it fresh. We’re lucky to have a place like this right here in Aberdeen. A real-deal Staten Island-style pizza joint. You love pizza? You gotta come here.

Yelp
I grew up on Staten Island and I use to go to Denino's out there and right after across the street was the original Ralph's ices! I was so happy that the Denino's is Aberdeen is just like the one on Staten Island! Calamari was spot on crispy and all Rings! Cesar salad was delicious and the pizza was spot on perfect!! The service was excellent and as busy as they are on a Friday night they hustle to get you seat and fed as fast as possible. Pleasant experience all the way from the host, waiteress, servers, and a pleasant greeting from the owner himself. The place has an old style pizzeria feel and to me I love it! I highly recommended this place if you're looking for an excellent slice of pizza.

Yelp
Denino's in Aberdeen is undoubtedly one of the standout pizza joints in Monmouth County. If you're craving that classic, thin-crust pie done right, this spot hits the mark almost every time. Their plain pizza showcases a perfectly crispy crust with just the right amount of char--though occasionally it can be a bit more on the burnt side than expected. The sauce-to-cheese ratio is spot on, and the flavor is full, robust, and satisfying without overwhelming. Each slice holds up nicely without getting too soggy, even with a thin base, which is a testament to their craft. It's no wonder locals keep coming back, and I wouldn't be surprised if Dave Portnoy himself threw out an 8.1 or higher on the scale. Denino's is worth a visit if you're in the area and in the mood for a well-balanced, crisp slice.

Yelp
Stopped by to pick up some quick lunch on 7/5/24 and it was pretty quiet. It was easy to order and there is a very simple menu. French fries were great and so was the penne vodka. The penne vodka did have a sweeter note to it and wasn't as creamy as usual. The "garbage" pie was a bit on the drier end but this place did not skimp on the toppings.

Yelp
I just noticed my last review was nine years ago so let's get busy about Deninos. Still simply a great pizza place and restaurant the regular pie is great, the sesame pizza is off the charts, if you like scungilli it's also amazing. I can go down the menu but it's too much to list. Just go with your appetite and Manjia

Yelp
My family and I have traveled all over the United States for pizza. Denino's is one of the best Pizza Joints anywhere in the world! The pizza has a crispy crust with semolina, bread crumb, parmesan combo on the bottom of the crispy crust. The sauce is sweet and savory and compliments every bite. Fresh tasting cheese on every delicious pie, Mike and his family know how to make an amazing pie. Denino's is on the top of every top pizza list.

Yelp
My fav new pizza spot in NJ. We ordered the clam pie with sesame crust and the garbage pie. The crust was perfectly crispy yet chewy. Tons of clams and other toppings in each pie. Fresh ingredients. High quality cheese. Excellent. We will definitely be back! Easy parking as the restaurant is located in a large shopping center. Ample private parking.

Rich C.

Yelp
About once or twice a month I drive 60 miles ,on way to visit this wonderful place . The food is incredible & the pizza is the best tasting pie I have ever had . It's a small place & everyone there treats you like family . Mike the owner checks on tables to make sure everyone is happy with their meals . The fried calamari is always crispy yet tender & the Half & Half ,meatball & Sausage, sandwich is a meal for 2 it is so filled . Believe me it is worth the 60 mile trip .

Nicholas G.

Yelp
My favorite local spot. Unlike many others, they did not compromise quality when opening a location outside of NY. Cheesesteak pizza and Vodka pizza with sesame crust is unbelievable.

Ruth S.

Yelp
I have been going to Denino's FOREVER my family likes our pizza certain way and Denino's is the way to go!! The food there is awesome!! I highly recommend the fried calamari and the mozzarella sticks for appetizers then depending on how many people you have pies and pies of PIZZA!! Their pepperoni pizza is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! It's so good! The garbage pizza is anything but garbage! All their pizzas are so yummy!! Their service is also amazing!! They have plenty of staff and even when they are really busy (because they are so good!!) they are always friendly and helpful! The ambiance also is great! The smell of pizza coming for the kitchen is heavenly!!! Also the pictures on the walls are always so pretty!! I love the layout and style of their restaurant!! Denino's will forever hold so many memories of my childhood!!

Yelp
Great pizza and great service. I recommend getting the clam pizza. I find the sesame crust not necessarily.

Thomas K.

Yelp
the pizza was amazing. service was mid. seemed annoyed. the inside was nice. the wait was not terrible.
google avatar

Maritza M.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST pizza in town. We also had the shrimp parm with vodka sauce and it was delicious! The service is ok, as they can sometimes be under staffed, but it makes up for it on the food. They have been around forever and word on the street is this location (Aberdeen) is better than the other location (Brick). I will have to test that theory out. This was my third time here, and I'm sure I'll be here again. If you're in the area, I'd definitely try them out. They have a small cozy ambiance, making it feel like you're in grandma's kitchen.

Alex M.

Yelp
Everything is good. The food is always fresh and the service is great. One of the best pizza in New Jersey.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious and your Parmesan. Perfect service is great place is nice and clean and the food is delicious.

Yelp
Fantastic classic thin crust pizza. I've enjoyed Dinino's pizza for years going back to my time living in Staten Island. You cannot go wrong with a classic margarita or plain cheese pizza. Its just a standard pizzeria with table service if you choose so don't expect anything over the top in terms of service or decor. Just eat your pizza and enjoy. If I was to go out of my way to have pizza; Dinino's is the spot.

Louis P.

Yelp
Food is fresh and delicious and portions are generous. Highly recommend the meatball Parm and garlic bread.

Lar M.

Yelp
Been to both locations . When you can't decide which location is better , THAT'S when the pizza is good! Although they do serve alcohol at the Staten Island place , you can BYOB here ! Hahaha!

Yelp
UPDATE: 06/25/24 I gave this restaurant over a month to respond either via Instagram, Yelp, phone, or any way they want it. I receive zero response. In the days following what I thought tasted like literally poisonous or tampered with pizza, I got severe pain, and there was blood in my stool which you can see with the added photo. I had no intention of including this photo, but seeing that this restaurant doesn't give to you know what's about its patrons, it makes me wonder what really happened that night with my pizza that they are not coming forward with?! So I am coming forward. I am not a scientist and I can't prove 100% better pizza caused by distress, but if I were in a quart room I would only have to prove a preponderance of the evidence. Evidence that shows a claim is more likely to be true than false. I believe what I believe and I am sharing that belief. Unfortunately, this restaurant has done nothing to sway this belief. :-(

Yelp
We went with friends and were very impressed that Denino's lived up to its fine reputation. We ordered a Margherita Pizza to share and we each had our own humongous eggplant parm dinners that came with salad. Everything was flavorful and well balanced. We will definitely return soon.

Tulshi P.

Yelp
I had been wanting to check out this pizza place for a while! I had been to two other pizza spots in the same neighborhood and had heard great things about this one too. I loved the margherita pizza! It was packed with flavor and great to share between 2-3 people. The wait times can be pretty long on a Friday night but the wait is worth it.

Yelp
Deninos is a hidden gem in Aberdeen, NJ. Their sesame crust pizza is super crispy with a sweet sauce and salty cheese. The service is quick and extremely kid friendly. Not only is their pizza excellent, but their other entrees as well. The Caesar salad has a delicious, thick creamy dressing, and their wings are crispy on the outside with a tender juicy inside. You also can't forget a plentiful amount of sauce under the wings for extra dipping. This is the perfect neighborhood pizza parlor with excellent food and great service. Get there early, the tables fill up!

Carman S.

Yelp
We have ordered from here many many times. Every time the pizza is phenomenal. We get the specialty sesame crust. The flavor is outstanding. Never have had a bad pie.
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Great local place well stock bar great atmosphere food is always on point. Can't wait for spring so we can go across the street for Ralph's Italian ices then it'll be a complete day.

Yelp
I online ordered a pie that was ready 16 minutes later. When I arrived the place was packed but I very quickly was greeted, told them I placed an order, and from order placement completion to pick up and out the door was under 20 minutes. Pizza was top notch and second favourite that I've had (that comes to mind). All for a fair price. $26. I loved walking in and smelling the smells, seeing families having a Saturday night together. I loved this place.

AnnMarie K.

Yelp
The pizza is always exactly as it should be, delicious. We had the fried calamari on this visit and it was the best I've had in a very long time.

Yelp
It's a pizzeria, the food is fine. I need 85 characters? Ya mean that's not 85 characters?
google avatar

Yelp
This review is for management only! DO NOT attempt to buy an online gift card from this location! Website said I had to bring email to the restaurant and pick up the card. Got to restaurant and staff is confused as hell. Girl calls manager on the phone and he says to just use the email to pay for food. So I'm supposed to hand someone an email as a gift that clearly states to pick up card from restaurant??? Now I have to track down the manager for a refund or dispute the charges. Another lady walks in to buy a card in person and they ran out of cards. Get your shit together! Pizza is always great though.

Chandrasekhar T.

Yelp
Pizzas are good. It was a lunch from work. We ordered assorted pies cheese , Margherita , pepperoni and sausage with bacon. All pies were great. The place was crowded for a weekday during lunch, which means it a good place. Definitely worth trying out
google avatar

Betty L.

Yelp
I have heard about this place many times. My family orders from here often. I was really craving pizza and I decided to order there plain cheese pie. To my surprise it really hit the spot. It was a perfect pie because of their crust. It was thin and crunchy with the perfect amount of cheese. My favorite part was that the sauce was ladled beautifully on top. I absolutely love pizza like that. Would I order from here again? Absolutely.
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
Local favorite here in Matawan - Aberdeen. Pizza is always consistently good. They used to offer local delivery but the last few times we called it was pick up only. A little in the high price side but we'll worth it for a good pizza in NJ !
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Regular slice is amazing! First time trying this place. I'll be back for a vodka slice for sure.

Getting R.

Yelp
WOW. Talk about complete lack of customer service!! This used to be among my favorite pizza places because of their thin and crispy crust and unique distribution of sauce. But sadly, the last few times the quality has appreciably decreased. So it was highly inconsistent. One day we would get phenomenal pizza. The next visit mediocre to poor. But today we got largely inedible! We received two completely dried out sesame crust cheese pizzas which my husband picked up promptly and on time and we live about 20 to 25 minutes away so he brought it home and we tried to eat it immediately. The problem is not only was the pizza itself VERY dry, but parts of the crust were burned beyond recognition. As in completely black, and I will try to attach a photo of a sample piece of the crust. Now the entire crust wasn't black, but certainly enough of the perimeter was that it affected the taste of eating it. And so I reached out to the restaurant in two ways. First I sent an Instagram message & photos using a friend's account as I don't have my own IG. Then I called directly and spoke with a girl at 5:45 PM on Friday, March 3rd. I explained what I received. And I explained that I sent photos, and I asked if I could please receive either a refund or credit for one of the two pies which I thought was beyond reasonable. I should actually ask for a full refund, but since we can't return the pizzas, as we're not going to travel another 50 +minutes which is what it would take there and back, I only asked for a 50% credit or refund. We are eating around the burnt areas because we are starving, and at this point it's just sustenance but not enjoyable to eat. The girl answered, and she said she's sorry to hear that we received this pizza but they are unable to offer a refund or credit. That is insane. They are UNWILLING to do so! Huge difference. This is penny wise and pound foolish because her response prompted me to write a review I had not planned to write! And to likely do a charge back I would really prefer not to do. And now I will have to request a refund for both rather than just one pizza. Not smart business sense. Horrific customer service. There is no consistency and for what they charge which was $44.25 for just two plain pizzas w sesame crust is beyond absurd not to give the highest quality product and to stand behind their product when they fail! Clearly, either ovens were way too hot or they left our pizzas in way too long were they were made to thin in terms of the crust and the sauce ratio was poor. Maybe some or all of those factors. We ordered at a time that it should not have been insanely busy and even if it was, no excuse. Even had it not been a burnt crust, the pie was completely over cooked in overtime. We did not ask for a well-done pie! I still would hold out hope the restaurant will choose to do the right thing, but as of right now, it appears they refuse to do. What a shame as my husband and his family frequented this place for many many years. So much for being loyal customers.... Your mileage may vary. Maybe you'll hit them on a day when their pizza actually looks like the photo on this yelp page posted by them or others. Or maybe you'll receive a burnt one like me? If you want to spend your hard earned money to flip that coin, that's your prerogative. There's so many other pizzerias that I would suggest not taking a chance.

Paul Z.

Yelp
Solid good thin crust Pizza . Ordered a pie to go and ate the whole pie . Loved the sesame seed crust . Pen and raised NYC kid approved .

Yelp
October 21, 2022 I decided to have a chicken cutlet Parm without the bread and the DeNinos. I also ordered a Snapple iced tea "Beware" The food was OK but when I opened the Snapple iced tea bottle, I began to drink it, and it tasted a little weird. I continued eating and drank some more and down my throat went a big chunk of slime. I proceeded to call Deninos to let them know that I ended up throwing up my food because of the Snapple that they sold me was no good and had a slimy substance in it. It actually look like chunks of brown phlegm. I was very disappointed that they took no responsibility and said that there's nothing they can do all of their iced tea bottle say the correct dates of sale and they had no idea that that was in my Snapple bottle so there's really nothing they can do . I was expecting maybe even they would call their vendor and let them know what happened in their store, but nothing was resolved between them and I was very disappointed , because even when you call and you're put on hold they say that Deninos will go The extra mile to make sure that you're satisfied. Well, I don't even think they went an extra inch so thank you Deninos 's for nothing. At least they gave me the number to their Snapple vendor so I can call them my self and complain. Because I had to ask for that. Unfortunately. All I know is I won't be patronizing Denino's ever again, nor would I be recommending it to anyone that I know. Thank You

Michael F.

Yelp
One of our favorite places great food great atmosphere and friendly family service. Get the vodka pizza and wings as an appetizer

Michelle N.

Yelp
Fried galama delish! Clam pie delish! Also had the roast beef hero fresh mozz and brown gravy on crunchy bread. Great service, food and atmosphere

Yelp
Pizza, salad, and wings can't go wrong. Delicious. Service is great and everyone is nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Always good food and great atmosphere. BYOB is a plus and service is top notch. We go at least 1-2 x per week to pick up or dine in.

Yelp
Pizza is delicious however I ordered a salad one night and a small worm the size of a fingernail was crawling in the lettuce. I called the restaurant and they apologized and said they'd refund me but I never received the refund. What grossed me out even more was the worm was still moving. I know it's lettuce and things happen however that was a first. I've been avoiding this place due to that experience and there's a lot of good other options in the area

Amy T.

Yelp
Tried the new arugula salad with blueberries, it was so good! Also new item is rice balls, loved them!! Best I've ever had!!
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
I'm giving a 2 star because the staff is extremely nice. The calamari was crunchy not much taste. The pizza was ok. BUT MY GOD THE PANINI bread was so hard I had to swish it down with water to get it soggy enough to swallow. Never again.... and I seldom ever write reviews and no...I couldn't eat the sandwich.

Jeannie O.

Yelp
Have taken out from Denino's on several occasions and the pizza is always amazing and delicious. Also enjoyed the chicken fingers.

Yelp
If you're looking for the perfect pizza slice and you're in the Matawan area, have I got a place for you. This pizza place, hidden in the Aberdeen Town Square Center was the perfect place for a quick slice to go. They packaged it up in a cute little single slice holder too! I mean we have all had a zillion different slices of pizza, especially in the land of NJ strip malls. This slice was cooked to perfection. Crust was crunchy and the cheese was delicious + not goey, and a nice consistency and cheese was a little brown on top. Sauce was excellent. Also. it globe of oil dripping g either. Yes, a perfect slice! I'll be back for more. Wonder why I've never been here before? Guess I haven't been reading enough Yelp pizza reviews. 4.5 stars!! Yelpers know! There's also seating in the back and they also serve more than just pizza. I gotta explore the menu more and get a more complete review for next time !

Tom W.

Yelp
Very good thin crust pizza. Staff is friendly. The pasta dishes are very good. Could get busy but it's worth the wait and it usually goes quick.

Keith B.

Yelp
Best pizza in NJ and the owner is awesome great guy, really cares about his customers!!
google avatar

Yelp
Denino's is without a doubt the absolute best pizza in all of New Jersey. The original location is in Staten Island. We are lucky to have it open near us. Crispy crust, amazing sauce, perfectly melted cheese. You can BYOB but get there early to get a table. In addition to the pizza, they have excellent appetizers. The mussels marinara were the best I've had - delectable sauce! This is the place to go with some friends, a few bottles of vino and have a great time for the evening together. Denino's has a family atmosphere.
google avatar

Greek M.

Yelp
The meals have been getting progressively worse and I think tonight's is the last straw for us. The pizza was definitely lacking in flavor and was inconsistently cooked but the real kicker - we ordered fries that were fried in old burnt oil - with pieces of burnt grit throughout. The fact that someone thought it was okay to serve this is beyond me.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
I've been here few times but this is my first review. We went in for lunch it wasn't even 12:30 and the dining room was packed. The service is fast and friendly. The energy in this place is very positive from the employees and the customers. The pizza is fantastic. They have an extensive menu but I have to admit I've never ordered anything but the pizza. Of course I'll be back.

Yelp
Denino's gets an A+ from me and my family. When I come home from CA, Denino's is a necessary stop. My dad always raved about it from when he used to teach in Staten Island and now we are thrilled that they have a few in NJ. The calamari is as good as it gets. When they had a supply problem, they took it off the menu for a little while because they didn't want to offer crap calamari. Now that is how quality control is done. If the owner is there when my dad comes in, he always greets him with a handshake. Everything about this place is awesome and I don't give compliments away like candy on Halloween. If you love NY style pizza, you need to eat here.
