I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the restaurant Der Engel in Sasbachwalden, Germany.
A truly charming and memorable stop in the heart of the Black Forest.
This restaurant is located within a historic hotel dating back to 1764, set in a beautiful village that is well worth visiting on its own. The interior is very elegant, with rich wooden paneling and a timeless, refined atmosphere that immediately reflects the heritage of the place.
We stopped in specifically to enjoy pastries and hot drinks, and the experience was excellent. We ordered a slice of Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte), which was impressively generous in size — in my opinion, easily enough to share between two people. Most importantly, it was absolutely delicious: perfectly balanced chocolate, light and creamy layers, flavorful cherries, and just the right touch of kirsch. A textbook example of how this iconic dessert should be made.
The service was equally delightful. The staff were attentive, warm, and genuinely welcoming, dressed in traditional attire, which added a lovely and authentic touch to the overall experience and made the visit even more special.
I would highly recommend both visiting the village and stopping at this hotel for a meal, dessert, or a coffee break. For those arriving by car, there is a convenient village parking area just 3–4 minutes’ walk from the hotel, which makes access very easy.
A wonderful place to pause, indulge, and enjoy the atmosphere of the Black Forest.
