"On top of cuisine heavily influenced by Austin’s neighbors to the south, the Texas Hill Country has an overlay of German heritage thanks to the Old World immigrants who settled in this region in the mid-1800s. Get a taste of that Central Texas-German cuisine at this Fredericksburg restaurant, which boasts Ingrid Hohmann, a European-trained chef known for cooking up traditional German recipes like schnitzels, bratwursts, and made-from-scratch strudels and Black Forest cake. There are indoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

After asking several locals for a good German restaurant, we were repeatedly recommended The Lindenbaum as the most “authentic” option in town. As a German myself, I had high expectations, but unfortunately, I left somewhat disappointed. One of my biggest issues was the “Wiener Schnitzel” on the menu. Traditionally, Wiener Schnitzel is made with veal, but here, it was only pork. In Germany, that would be called “Schnitzel Wiener Art” to differentiate it, and I wish the restaurant labeled it correctly. It’s hard to get Wiener schnitzel so I was super excited… That being said, the schnitzel itself was well-prepared and tasty, but I was expecting to eat a real Wiener Schnitzel. The potato salad was another letdown. What was served was not a typical German potato salad but rather mashed potatoes with bacon (Kartoffelpüree mit Speck). While it tasted fine, it was far from what one would expect if looking for a true German-style potato salad. Overall, while the food was decent, it didn’t quite meet the authentic German experience I was hoping for. If you’re just looking for a casual meal with German-inspired dishes, it might still be worth a visit, but if you’re seeking true authenticity, you may be disappointed.

Pretty good for those who want to try a German-style dinner once. Visited during a trip to Fredericksburg, the place came recommended by a local AirBnB host as authentic German cuisine. My friend ordered a curry huhn and a lemonade, I had a Jager schnitzel, and we found it enjoyable. The indoor atmosphere was modest and comfortable. Our server was Denise, who was friendly despite looking busy. With tip, an entree dinner was about $40 per person.

Great lunch!! Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us. We loved the marble rye bread to start. We had he jäger schnitzel, the mixed sausage platter and the kartoffel salad. The schnitzel featured a delicious wild mushroom sauce and was served with German potato salad and red cabbage. The schnitzel was crispy and the mushroom sauce was delicious. The sausage plate as served with a very good sauerkraut and German potato salad. The kartofel salad featured crisp greens and German potato salad. The Black Gorest Cake was too yummy to pass up for dessert. Good news! They did take our credit fcard!

Google
Good schnitzel is easily found at Der Lindenbaum. The red cabbage pairs well with the schnitzels. They have a good collection of German wines that make good meal great.

This was my first time trying German cuisine. Everything was well prepared. I had the curry wurst. The veal and pork sausage was good with the sauce. I just wasn't a fan of the sauerkraut and the German potato salad had a different taste, but they were okay. Hubby had the pot roast, it was tender and full of flavor. His dish came with red cabbage which was pretty good. We ended up switching plates halfway thru dinner, because I liked his meal better 😁 The portions are more than enough for us. I was surprised there was no complementary bread with our meal. The bread basket is an additional $3.95. It is a bit pricey. Our server was great. We didn't have to wait to be seated either. She made sure we were taken care of. It was difficult to find parking on the main strip, but there is parking in the back 👍

Google
About as German as you can get in the US. We had jagerschnitzel and pork chops at our table and they were fantastic! The sauerkraut and red cabbage sides were generous and delicious. However the surprise side was the German potatoes. Addictive. Great taste and consistency. Ausgezeichnet! This rivaled meals we had in Germany 🇩🇪. To top it off the Tuxedo cake was wonderful. The employees were terrific, helpful, and on top of everything. I highly recommend this authentic German restaurant!

The goulash was amazing, as was their Black Forest cake!! Cozy, homey atmosphere and excellent food. Definitely will visit again! 🥰🥰🥰

My husband had the pork chop in a mustard sauce that I tasted and it was divine. That's a huge compliment coming from someone who thought they hated mustard & not being a fan of German food. My husband loves German food. I don't like sauerkraut, but that was the best I had ever tasted. The potato salad I ate it all and refused to share because it very delicious. The chocolate mousse was soooo good. The 3 sausage links I had were very good along with mustard dipping sauce. I couldn't eat all of mine because the chocolate mousse was calling my name.

Yelp
I am originally from Chicago and had access to delicious, traditional German restaurants. My review and info is based on my knowledge skills and experiences from other restaurants there. I was one of two tables when I arrived on an early Saturday afternoon. I always tell the "busyness" of the restaurant because sometimes that can effect quality. The restaurant was recommended to me by a local person that I asked "Which restaurant am I going to for good traditional German food, I'm from elsewhere." They work at the Pacific museum around the block. I ordered the Bürgermeister Plate. The sausage is from a local German butcher shop and includes a smoked polish sausage, a bratwurst and a knackwurst with sauerkraut and German potato salad. I must inform you the potato salad is not traditional with sliced potatoes and sauce but a mashed potato. IT WAS THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT. So please be aware it's probably different than what you expect, but I believe you will appreciate the texture compared to the traditional style. (The flavor is there.) I had a draft pilsner that almost hurt my throat to drink it was so cold. I had a draft Oktoberfest with my meal that as I ate, I legitimately had goose bumps. It arrived hot from the kitchen. I followed with a cup of coffee, black, cause it's good coffee. I look forward to my next visit to Fredericksburg and will come back to try something else on the menu. For traditional sausage and beer, . They prefer cash and debit, there is a credit card processing fee, that's why they prefer cash or debit, no fees.

Yelp
If you want to step back into time and have some authentic German food with good service, then stop by for a tasty meal. If you want a more touristy place, then don't come, but you will be missing out. Enjoy a cold beer in a quiet ambiance. Relax and enjoy! David has been amazing and has some great stories to tell (if you ask). We recommend asking for a few extra sides (the cucumbers are my favorite).

Mike H.

Yelp
Good German restaurant. We went with friends who had never had German food before and they enjoyed it. I had the Burgermeister Platte which is the sausage plate. Polish, bratwurst and knackwurst. All very good and the mustard was on point. The German potato salad was excellent. My wife had the Jager Schnitzel. I thought the pork was a tad dry but the mushroom sauce helped. Her friend had the Gulasch and she enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was good. Unique flavor. My buddy had the Kassler Rippchen, a smoked pork chop. He thought it was good but said that it tasted more like a ham. The German bread is good. Maybe a bit dry but everyone enjoyed it. We shared a cucumber salad which had pickled cucumbers. It was refreshing and the cucumbers exceptional. I could have eaten a bowl of those bad boys! It was a bit warm in the restaurant. I didn't see any type of AC or air circulation system.

Amy T.

Yelp
We ate here our last night in Fredericksburg and this was by far the BEST German food we had our entire trip!! It was like stepping back in time. I had the Ungarishes Gulasch and my husband had the Jäger Schnitzel. I love Gulasch and if it's on the menu, I'm ordering it. The noodles were handmade fresh that day. Chef's kiss perfection!

Emily J.

Yelp
When we walked into this restaurant, it was like going back in time. It looked just like my grandmother's house; in fact, I'm 99% sure she had the exact same chairs and table. It was surreal. Schnitzel was crispy and not greasy and the mushroom gravy was quite good. The potatoes had an odd sweet taste; not really what I was expecting. It's a fairly limited menu. But if you're looking for German food then it should fit the bill. In my opinion it was only OK.

Oda O.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch. Special was Reuben sandwich and German potato salad. Food was a disappointment. Sandwich had two pieces of deli beef and some cheese. Where I come from Reuben has kraut and sauce and lots of meat. Also potato salad was a scoop of mashed potatoes on lettuce. Again not the German potato salad where I come from. The "special" also cost $20. Really a disappointment. Service was fine.

Stacey F.

Yelp
This has been the best food we've had in town. Great German cuisine and great service. Nothing fancy but your taste buds will thank you. We couldn't decide, so went with both pork chop and schnitzel (Butchers plate). The homemade German potato salad was sweet and delicious. Don't wait in line at other places, stop in and enjoy the taste of Germany.

John M.

Yelp
OK, just know you won't find out about the 3% added credit card fee until they drop your bill. But other then that the food was solid. I had the schnitzel with mustard sauce. It came with 2 scoops of german potato salad and kraut. It was good. My black forest cake for dessert did not suck either. My service was attentive and friendly. A good experience until the credit card fee BS. Put a sign on your door please.

Reatha S.

Yelp
Food was excellent, Zweibel Schnitzel with German potato salad and red cabbage. Great service. And it was put on the table in less than 10 minutes

Jana S.

Yelp
Been coming here with my family for a long time the food is great service amazing. It is a traditional German restaurant with authentic German food.

Rich G.

Yelp
Overall a good experience. Very friendly staff. Started with a beer and we shared the bread basket. Several German beers on tap. They also have some bottles plus wine. Rather small menu. Although everything we had was good. Meal comes with hot German potato salad I would prefer spaetzle. So a solid 4. Nice experience.

Yu-kwong C.

Yelp
Since we don't know much about German food, we just trust what Yelp has to say. We picked Des Lindenbaum because of the decent reviews as well as the German looking name. Upon recommendation from the waitress, we ordered these three items: Wurgermeiter platte (sausage platter), Wiener schnitzel (cutlet pork), and goulash, plus a salad. The sausage platter came with three kinds of sausages: Polish sausage, knockwurst, and bratwurst. All three sausages were nicely grilled and browned. The waitress pointed out to us which was which. But we forgot about it right away as we just couldn't wait to try. They all tasted great. However, I was expecting the texture to be more "meaty" instead of the plain hot-dog like texture. They all tasted good. Wiener schnitzel (cutlet pork) was fine. The pork was nicely breaded and fried. I really like the brown mushroom sauce, which went deliciously with the pork. Of all the dishes, I liked the goulash best. The meat was tender and chunky. The thick sauce was rich and flavorful. We also got a large salad to share. It has romaine lettuce, cucumbers with a dill sauce, carrots, cherry tomatoes. All veggie were very fresh. We loved the homemade German potato salad, which tastes lightly sweet. Overall, we enjoyed the food and the decor although the portion could have been more generous.

Brad B.

Yelp
Great experience taking the parents to dinner while visiting. We were seated promptly. Our server (I believe it was Denice) was awesome. She recommended the Jager Schnitzel and it did not disappoint. Parents had the Butcher Plate, potato soup, and another entire I don't recall. All delicious with rave reviews. Best authentic-style German food we've found in a long time!

Jason M.

Yelp
Good service, even though they were short people. Food was good, the menu idle relatively limited, but what they have is good. Small restaurant, and was relatively quiet. I'd recommend, but look up menu prior.

Jan S.

Yelp
I have no complaints on the service but the food was far from authentic, other than the name. The beef goulash was stewed beef with little flavor and egg noodles, I could make better at home, the German potato salad was instant potatoes with a few things added to it. It was nothing like German potato salad. It was such a disappointment.

Suzanne G.

Yelp
We love this place. Quiet, great service, authentic food. The only thing I can't recommend is the desserts- not super tasty. But the schnitzel is phenomenally yummy, and the wurst plate and rye bread never disappoints.

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Our last stop while on a day trip to Fredericksburg. The ambiance was cozy and welcoming. Service was amazing, they're very attentive. The food was absolutely delicious. I went with friends so we tasted a bit of everything and it all truly hit the spot.

Melanie R.

Yelp
We had plans to try another German restaurant only to discover it is closed on Wednesdays, so we gave this place a try. It was okay, but the menu is really heavy on schnitzel. The sauerkraut was tasty, but I found the potato salad too sweet. The bread is great, but pricey. We weren't told about the special and then I overheard others being told about it. Overall, it was okay, I wouldn't rush back.

Patricia R.

Yelp
Looking for a place to dine in Fredericksburg? Der Lindenbaum is the place to visit. We drove in late and beat the closing time of 9pm. The wait staff was friendly and the food was delicious! It's off the Main Street and parking at that time was easy to find.

Sharon B.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this dining experience. Some of the best tasting pork I've had since moving to Texas. The restaurant was super clean and the staff was very friendly.

Ceivy M.

Yelp
Having never lived in Germany and currently living in a town with an excellent German restaurant, I can say with no authority, that it was good German food. The mashed potatoes were oddly sweet (to me) but I realize that regardless of nationally, food preparation will differ by region. (For example I wouldn't consider Southern Mexican food authentic if I'd only eaten Mexican food from the Northern regions). My friend who accompanied me is German, and they swore up and down that the Paprika Schnitzle tasted exactly like the one their grandma used to make. I think I saw them shed a tear when they admitted that. The only drawback were the prices. I understand it's a tourist town and they can afford to increase prices, but goodness the $22 plates hurt my feelings.

Marcelo Q.

Yelp
Staff was nice so we are giving 3stars. Food is 1 star. We were expecting a good selection of German food but we did not get it. Small selection of food and the worst part is that the selection was not authentic and they were out of items. If you want authentic German food don't go here. I hate to give negative reviews but our anniversary dinner was a bust because of false reviews online.

Paul S.

Yelp
Fantastic schnitzel!! We had the Weiner and Jagger. Both were tender, crispy and hot! Wonderful mushroom sauce. Thoughtful, friendly service with a comforting German accent. We will continue to come back!

Weldon B.

Yelp
This is a cozy little German restaurant. Both times I've eaten there, I had the Burgermeister plate. The German potato salad is very good. Service is good. They charge extra to pay with a credit card.

Ken S.

Yelp
Fabulous , authentic,, unrushed, small Resterant German style Food Dining..... Denise was our Server, impeccable Service..... Not to be missed..... Imbodies Fredericksburg Hospitality......

Erika S.

Yelp
Nice lunch menu variety. Appreciated the waitress speaking some basic German. Good German beer selection. Save room for authentic German dessert. Great location on Main Street.

Tracy G.

Yelp
Amazing. Currently has a German waitress who is awesome. The service was great. Nice German ambiance. The food came quick and was delicious.

Broox A.

Yelp
Delicious German food. Great ambiance. Really appreciated the friendly service! Highly recommend.

Brian B.

Yelp
A perfect and authentic German restaurant. Server was from Munich and the food was outstanding. Käse schnitzel was amazing and the chocolate cake for dessert was superior. Glad we ended our day here.

Logan L.

Yelp
Definitely an old German feel. The food overall was good--the meats, the sauerkraut, the mustard. My one critique is the potato salad. They've added something sweet. Not a fan. Our whole party didn't like it and didn't finish.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Our favorite food in Fredericksburg! I could eat my weight in the potato salad alone. Our server, David, really made the experience exceptional. So good!

Lydia N.

Yelp
When one is in Fredericksburg, one must have German foods! So we ended up here because the wait was bearable and they were able to seat our somewhat large party. This restaurant is quaint and adorable, complete with laminated checkered tablecloths and a bud vase with fresh flowers. Our server was great and took care of us, giving helpful suggestions. While the menu seemed overwhelming at first, with so many unfamiliar terms, it really boiled down to variations of sausage/bratwurst, schnitzel, and sides. Complimentary marbled rye bread was a much appreciated gesture. (I was starving). I ended up getting bratwurst plate, which came with sides of potato salad and sauerkraut. The potato salad was more like a sweet potato-salad-flavored mashed potato. Great balance to the salty bratwurst that I also ate with more bread. Altogether, it's a little pricey but a fun experience.

Sabine F.

Yelp
We always make a stop at one of the many German restaurants in Fredericksburg, but hadn't been to this one. We always eat Schnitzel because it is one of the signature dishes in Germany. The Schnitzel was good, the potato salad was different from what I am used to eating. It was more like mashed potatoes. The potato salad tasted good. Staff was friendly and service was fast.

Dean M.

Yelp
Good jager schnitzel, red cabbage, and mashed potatoes. Good, friendly service. Seemed overpriced.

Ed V.

Yelp
First time and just want to say food is great and service is 1st class. Had our kids and they enjoyed the meals. We stepped out of confort zone to try a different meal.

Sun N.

Yelp
I was born and raised in Germany. Lindenbaum offers authentic German food, so eating there is a must when visiting Fredericksburg! We had the classic schnitzel and "Ungarischer Gulasch" (Hungarian goulash). I grew up eating these dishes and loved them. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures lol Anyway, the schnitzel is made with pork, pan fried and served with lemon. All three facts make it authentic and super delicious :) The red cabbage was slightly sweet and cooked with gloves. Super yummy! The goulash was tender and flavorful. We also ordered the bread. It is not as dense and heavy (literally) as German bread. This is a good move in the US because you don't have to get used to a different texture. The taste reminded me a lot of German caraway bread! We had seconds, because they even offer free bread refills. Besides imported regular German beer, they also offered a non-alcoholic one. Most of the staff seem to have been born in Germany. Regardless, they all spoke German and were super nice :) It's a rustic & cute place. No idea why Lindenbaum has less than 4 stars, so don't let that bother you. If you want to feel like you are eating an authentic meal, just like people in Germany would, you should definitely go to Lindenbaum!

Scott W.

Yelp
Overall, we had a good experience at Der Lindenbaum. It was one of two German restaurants downtown, and it was the first one we came across. They had similar reviews, so we chose this one. It was a very hot day, and the outside area was definitely not what we wanted. The inside was cooler, although still warm overall. We wanted some lighter fare, and so we got sandwiches. My wife's roast beef sandwich was very good, although a smaller portion than we thought it would be. That's the same for the reubens that my daughter and I got. They had all of the necessary ingredients, but I would definitely not call it a substantial sandwich. The meat and sauerkraut was good in the reuben, but the bread was dry and fairly plain. We had enough room after finishing those to get a dessert, and we chose a peach custard that was very good. The service was good overall, and we did not have to wait around long for any part of the meal. The beer selection was good overall, but by the end, we ended up paying over $90 with tip for three people, and we did not really feel like we got that much value out of what we ate.

Zee M.

Yelp
The food here seems to be the most authentically German food you can get in Fredericksburg. The owner has always been so nice every time we've gone in. The waitstaff seems to be happy too. The little limestone building is so sweet, and is decorated in trees (to reflect the name of the restaurant in German.) Der Lindenbaum is a must, every-time we come to Fredericksburg. Our favorite is the jägerschnitzel, but this time we had the wienerschnitzel and bratwurst.

Joshua H.

Yelp
I had very high hopes and expectations for this place after 2 prior local German venue dining experiences that rocked my foodie world. I heard this was a very popular place as well and in fact the oldest German restaurant in the county. Perhaps I let hype get out ahead of me but nonetheless. The place is smaller inside but nice and quite, mellow, relaxed. The staff are kind and friendly. The service is fast and accurate. The menu has all the traditional German fair dishes you could ask for. I went with the Kasseler Rippchen plate expecting a normal thick pork chop with my plate. Instead I got 2 small thin pieces of hamsteak I'd expect for a breakfast dish. They were good yet no doubt! As was the picked red cabbage and saurkraut sides. All good! Just danty on the meat portion which never happens with German dishes I've had. Big portions is part of what makes the plates so unique is it not? I simply felt I paid a dinner price for a breakfast entree is all. Beyond that, it's a good place to go and perhaps the other dishes are a better testament to what they really offer here. I'd likely go to one of the other 2 spots I'd been to before if German fare was my dinner intent.

Stephen B.

Yelp
A snug restaurant. A person feels like they are in a home's dining room. The waiter was personable and knowledgeable. Everything was so tasty with great portions.

Yitzhak O.

Yelp
The service was friendly and the Goulash was very tasty! You don't find Goulash on the menu very often so I took the opportunity to enjoy the dish. I thought Goulash was Hungarian but I'll take it. My server spoke German so I took the opportunity to improve my Deutsch skills. It's a nice homey place with good food. Come and enjoy some German food and beers!!

Tracie C.

Yelp
This is the best German food in Fredericksburg, for sure. The food is consistently delicious and the service is always great! It's a tiny place so plan your visit carefully.

John C.

Yelp
Everything was amazing. I would suggest the Jaeger Schnitzel with a Spaten Optimator. Perfect pairing and the waitress agreed.

Alexis B.

Yelp
1. Service: Not kid friendly. Our dining experience started off fine and our 2 and 4 year olds were talking as they are entitled to as human beings eating at a restaurant. The owner or manager came over and told my husband that another table said the kids were bothering them and to get them quiet (not lower voice but get them silent). I am biased but I guarantee these kids were not louder than any other adult in the restaurant talking. There may have been a squeaky pitch here and there. Then the place fills up and it is very loud with lots more adults talking as they are entitled to do. We finish and order dessert to share. Our son lost it having to share. What do we do? My husband takes him outside because we don't want to subject people to the yelling. We're relatively considerate people of shared spaces. We don't like them yelling either. They come back and we start eating again. My son starts to yell a few minutes in so as we are about to take him out the elder people that complained the first time start to...yell. Our 2 year old yelling and learning to share makes a lot more sense than a 80+ year old yelling who has way more wisdom and brain/emotional development. The owner or manager just looked at us in disgust and didn't say anything to the two elder men yelling at us. One of the male servers even yelled at us but was chuckling a bit. He may have mocked our son which isn't quite mature either. Was our 2 yo son annoying for less than a minute before we had time to physically get up and walk him out? Yes. Did we do the right thing by taking him outside to calm him down and teach him that behavior was wrong? I think so. I greatly appreciate our server for continuing to provide us excellent service and respect before and after the men yelled at us and told us to teach our kid manners (parent shaming at its finest). She spoke German and had a great interaction with our kids. Very lovely person. 2. Food: 2.5 stars. My husband is German and I've eaten in Germany for the past 14 years when we visit so we are definitely biased due to having authentic German food previously. The schnitzel was overcooked and greasy. The flavor of the curry wurst was different and had a bit too much clover or All Spice. The curry came through but overall the sauce was nothing like what you'd get in Deutschland. The jäger sauce on the schnitzel was tasty but heavy on the wine (usually it's a brown sauce with mushrooms). The flavor was different from any jägerschnitzel I've had. The sauerkraut was really delicious and authentic. Overall this may be great for people that don't know/like authentic German food.

Gladys L.

Yelp
I am German, and I liked the place. Yes, it's bot tons of food as one is used to in the US but it is enough food. It's tasty and well prepared. Staff is super friendly and the please is clean and neat. Was not a big fan of the Sauerkraut but that could be just me.

James M.

Yelp
Just adding some photos to my original review, don't ever even think about eating here, they do not care. It's a tourist trap, your head is caught in the mousetrap because you wanted a little cheddar. $25 for sausage that looks like it spent 5 days in the desert sun and an inedible piece of pork that was tougher than a dogs chew toy. How dare you serve anyone this food and take their money!

Axe B.

Yelp
Yuck...I am from Germany & their food is baaad. Yes, BAD. Currywurst (sausage) had no curry resemplance. As brown (discolored) as the Gulasch soup. Isn't Curry red? There is nothing German about their food. And nobody could explain why 2 orders added up to $49¡ the menu showed each Curry Wurst plate being $18 x 2=.36, right? "This Linden Tree has lost its leaves..."

Rob T.

Yelp
Delicious food. Went for dinner and wanted their 3 sausage platter available at lunch. They let me order it!!! Wasn't on dinner menu. The red cabbage was incredible. It might have had a little heat to it. Not sure as I was putting nice amounts of mustard on my sausage bites. Ha!! I chose the German Chocolate cake for dessert later.

Eric F.

Yelp
Excellent schnitzel and the strudel was equally as good. If you are nearby go you won't be disappointed
