My husband and I came here to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary! The staff greeted us warmly. The cabin was lovely and clean and the grounds so tranquil. We enjoyed the food at the restaurant also The chicken pot pie was delicious, as was my husband’s stew! The hotel is very centrally located and we did lots of day hikes. I reserved the sauna both days and it was very enjoyable! We will be coming back in the fall to see the leaves turning.

Came here for a wedding where we rented all the cabins. It was perfect. Whoever has bought and updated cabins, grounds, etc. have done a great job. Little hiking spots, beautiful scenery. Each cabin while close to others are all very private. Don't miss the sauna, you juat have to sign-up.

I stayed here last year and really like it, so I came back recently to celebrate my birthday. I was put in a pretty small, but very cute cabin. It was half the size of the last cabin I was in for the same price, so I'm not sure what happened there. The bathroom didn't have a sink which was kind of odd. Had to brush my teeth and do my makeup in the kitchen. There were a few little things that were broken in the cabin, but I let the staff know and they were very quick to come fix them. They also delivered something from the restaurant to my cabin so that was very nice of them. I went to the on site restaurant for my birthday dinner after I arrived. I was told to sit anywhere so I sat at a table two away from the next people. It took a minute for them to take my order, but the waitress finally came over and just stared at me. Didn't ask what can I get for you what would you like to order just stood at the end of the table and stared. When I realized she was the waitress and that she wasn't going to say anything, I just started to order. I had a question about the menu and she just shook her head. Still no words. I had to basically pull anything out of her. Very awkward. When I got my food I didn't have any silverware, so I politely asked for some. I was then scolded by the same waitress saying 'that's what happens when people don't sit at tables that are already made up.' I tipped because the hostess was really sweet, but if it had just been the waitress I absolutely would not have tipped, of course. Terrible service and the food was nothing to write home about. Wildly overpriced for what it is. The place is also very out of the way and secluded, which I think is great, but it's also right next to a busy road so you never really feel like you're in nature. But maybe that's just me as someone who grew up in the backwoods. It was also pretty annoying that I called them the day before my stay to make sure I was close to the grassy area on the property for my dog to play in and they reassured me that my cabin would be very close to it, but when I got there the next day there were signs everywhere that said keep off the grass. So, one of the few times my city dog actually gets to run around in nature didn't happen. So, if you're coming here it really is a cute place. There's just constant car sounds and super cranky waitresses. Avoid the restaurant unless you want to get scolded for sitting anywhere after being told to sit anywhere.

Very special beautiful place! I love the independent nicely decorated cabins. The free sauna and s'mores ($10) are an added bonus! Just walking the grounds was fun! ||I loved having easy access to all needs: restaurant on site, coffee and tea when needed etc. made an even one night stay so comfortable for our family with young kiddos. ||Everyone was so friendly and the front desk gal was so helpful to us!! Thank you

We stayed here twice, once in a yurt & once in a cabin. Most recently, we stayed in the chapel & held our micro wedding here. We truly can’t say enough about Chey & the rest of Desolation team. They truly go above and beyond, in so many ways. Our day was perfect, the resort is incredible, the staff is awesome, and the surroundings are so naturally beautiful…. We already can’t wait to go back again.

The airstream was so luxurious yet we still had a lovely camp setting with a table and chairs and fire pit. We were able to cook and relax inside or sit outside with a glass of wine. The dog friendly campsite was shaded by quaking aspens. We loved it. And just a short walk to the river so the dog could swim

As a wedding photographer, Desolation Hotel Hope Valley is truly one of my all-time favorite venues to photograph and celebrate at. The setting is absolutely stunning—tucked in the Sierra, with towering pines, wide-open skies, and that magical mix of rustic charm and refined comfort. What really sets this place apart, though, is the experience. The staff is incredibly attentive and kind, and the food is genuinely amazing—far above typical “wedding food.” One of the most special things about this venue is that couples can fill the entire property with their favorite people, which creates such a cozy, connected atmosphere. It feels more like an intentional retreat than a one-day event. From a photographer’s perspective, it’s a dream: beautiful light, diverse backdrops, and a setting that encourages people to slow down and be present. I can’t recommend it enough!!!

Loved the sauna. The cabin and grounds were well maintained. Staff were friendly and attentive. The weather was perfect. Great place to get away from the rat race and reconnect. Awesome hamburgers at the campground down the road. Can’t wait to get back.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the rustic charm of our cabin, which perfectly balanced traditional touches with modern decor and amenities. We had a great time dining at Sorensen's Restaurant on the property - the food was fantastic! One of our favorite moments was relaxing by the outdoor wood fire pit, which was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The location is also ideal, just a short drive from Kirkwood Ski Resort, making it incredibly convenient for skiing. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a cozy yet modern retreat!

Yelp
If you are looking for a quiet isolated stay away from the city, this is the perfect spot. A place full of little cabins for your family and pets to enjoy. Also a nice mini sno-park. They have small hiking trails for sledding which is pretty awesome. The trees are so cover with snow which would make great photography. There's not many restaurant nearby besides in the hotel, so I advise to bring food to snack or cook. The hotel has a stove, plates, cups, and utensils to use. There's a fridge, but unfortnately no microwave. The electric fireplace keep you nice and warm. The customer service could be better and the room key attached with a paddle was pretty annoying to carry, but I wouldn't mind staying here again.

Yelp
I love this place a lot. It accommodated almost everything we needed. My family and I came in for one night stay while a snow storm hitting. We enjoyed the load of snowfall that nature brought us. The staffs were really helpful and tried their best to make us feel home. Welcome drink was offered during check in plus goodie bag for my pup. We got to use the old- fashioned sauna room which was nice. Also, the awesome staffs set the camp fire for us, great for roasting marshmallow (we brought our own). I understand the hotel has recently changed ownership. Some facilities, like the cafe and store, are under renovation. The only restaurant there is below average. No continental breakfast during our stay, however it's listing on the website. Basically no other options but paying premium price for a bowl of oatmeal. The tiny lobby only fits two people for public WiFi. It closes at 9pm. I wish there's a map that we could use to find hiking trail or sled area. The cabin we stayed was nice and clean. The only complaint my daughter has was it got real toasty in the middle of night who slept at the attic bed. Otherwise, great amenity.

Yelp
We were up enjoying a snow walk and play day with the dogs in Hope Valley in between winter storms. After such activities, it's nice to be able to sit and enjoy a good beer without going all the way to South Lake Tahoe. Sorensen's Cafe had Black Butte Porter in bottles! I asked an employee whether the resort was dog friendly and was told that the whole resort was dog friendly. They aren't allowed in the restaurant, though. So, we took our bottles and sat on comfy wood chairs around the outdoor fire pit. It was interesting that the name of the old resort was kept for the restaurant. The cabins look cute! I'd love to come back sometime and stay here. It'd be close to Kirkwood and peaceful at night.0

Yelp
We booked on this place and it's a nice place to get away from the city lights I will give this a five star . I'm sure there's other places it's just cause the lady we talked to and her name is Monica is just rude no respect. She charge us for the coffee and supposed to be complimentary for guests, it's not the money just the way her tone towards us . (did I mention we're Asian ) I don't think we will come back again thanks It's a nice place tho :((.

Yelp
Nice location in the mountains, but I wouldn't come back. Too many things I didn't like, an employee was smoking.. I was with my kids in the lawn area & smelled cigarettes. Did not like that. In the bathroom in the ceiling there was black spots all over the ceiling, I'm assuming that's black mold. There's no air ventilation you can turn on in the bathroom other than the window. In the shower it was so confusing to turn on, I had to have front desk come and help. The employee was confused herself & had to call maintenance. As she was trying to turn it on, the handle to adjust the heat of the water just popped off so easily. The bedroom with the queen bed smelled so dirty like dirty socks & shoes. I did like the front desk workers, they were kind & helpful. Also, the construction workers were nice as well. It suck's that desolation hotel had all these unfortunate things.

Yelp
I had the chance to stay at Desolation Hope Valley with my husband and dog and it was truly one of the best weekends away! Desolation does an amazing job at welcoming your pups while also making their oasis feel like home. We checked into the cabin with the fire already going and were so surprised to see how well stocked the kitchen was - spices, pots/pans/utensils, and literally everything you'd need to make a meal (which is a great idea since there isn't a ton around the Hope Valley area). There's a great restaurant on site called Sorenson's which we loved eating at for lunch/dinner and also had a few breakfast options out each morning. Our favorite parts of the property were the comfy beds, the rustic charm, the fire pits, the private sauna you could make reservations for, and how much fun our puppy had in the snow. We were minutes away some beautiful meadows and the property lets you rent complimentary equipment so we were able to snowshoe for the first time. You're also ~25 min from South Lake Tahoe if you want to get closer to the water. Thank you Desolation Hope Valley for such a wonderful weekend - we will be back!

Yelp
Pros: - a nice hiking trail right behind the property, there's also a stream running down the mountain into the property - the log cabin interior is very picturesque and cozy - VERY hot water - complimentary sealed bag of ground coffee - complimentary sealed aluminum bottle with "still water". - kitchen has: a high BTU gas stove, a moderately sized mini fridge with freezer compartment, and a VERY powerful exhaust fan above the stove. I cooked steaks during our stay and smoke was not an issue. - kitchen had a French press and a kettle - the smoke detector works, tested when I forgot to turn on the kitchen exhaust fan while cooking breakfast - gas fireplace that does a great job at heating the entire place - the handmade swing set is a bit of a hazard but my kids loved it. Could use a refresh/rebuild - each cabin seems to be uniquely designed, it was nice to walk around and admire them Cons: - the French press had some coffee grounds in it - found mice droppings in one the beds - super creaky stairs that make me question the construction and integrity - "complimentary wine" given in a disposable plastic cup. for the price we paid for the night I was hoping for a bottle of cheap wine at the least when I heard the word "complimentary" - window screens are broken/missing on the windows - random junk (ladders, generators?, large black garbage bags full of something, etc) strewn all around the property - dusty interior, bring your allergy meds - found mouse droppings on pots/pans, some were also poorly washed - chipped kitchenware - the cabin key is on a big wooden paddle which makes it a quite unwieldy Love at first sight, then your eyes start fixating on the various items in need of improvement. Regardless, we still enjoyed the place and would definitely consider coming back!

Yelp
Comfy cabins. Fabulous staff. Good food. Reasonable rates. With an extra shoutout to the Casey of the maintenance staff who stepped in without even being asked to help us with a car problem.

Yelp
The Sorensen's team literally moved heaven and earth to ensure that my wedding weekend, (the first of their season) was perfect! After the record snowfall of 2022-23, the property needed major restoration. The team brought in heaters to melt the snow, put in French drains, cut down/back damaged trees, added over 6000 sq feet of sod, planted new flowers, and probably so much more that I'm not even aware of. By the time of the wedding, everything was GORGEOUS!!! I was additionally impressed that whenever I stopped by prior to the wedding, everyone was chipping in-- regardless of their title or job role. it was all hands on deck! I am especially grateful to Brandon, Ross, Charley, Monica, Chey, Brianne, Zack and Jay. No request was too big or small for them, and they always greeted us with a smile and can-do attitude. By the end of weekend we were greeted with hugs and all felt like family! I will be eternally grateful to this team, Sorensen's and Desolation Hotel Hope Valley for making my wedding weekend MAGICAL!!! The food was delicious, service outstanding and setting perfection! Thank you all!

Yelp
My daughter and I had a chance for a last-minute getaway for some hiking with our pups and this spot was PERFECT! The staff at check in and departure were delightful. We stayed in Tanglewood and it was perfect for us with two rooms and a small kitchen. We ate at the restaurant one night and both had burgers (one real and one vegetarian) and they were delicious especially accompanied by the complimentary bottle of wine. The location is beautiful and was perfect for the hikes we'd planned, one near Luther Pass and one in the Carson Wilderness. What a lovely place to come home to after a long day in the hills! Thanks to everyone at DHHV!

Yelp
I stayed at Desolation Hotel Hope Valley this Summer with my dog and we had SO much fun!! The property is beautiful and offers tons of great hiking. Such an easy drive to Tahoe!

Yelp
I didn't get a chance to stay here but stopped in for the beautiful yellows leaves on the tree during mid October's for some pictures. This place is beautiful with variety of cabinet for rent. The trees was full of yellow leaves that you can't stop staring at its beauty. This is like a romantic getaways for a couple. The scenic was just too beautiful with the swing and the small creek surrounding. Those who want a retreated or a alone times, this is the place to check in. I believed it is expensive not cheap as you need to book advance. Overall, I think I will reserves one night in here just to be alone. But I recommend coming here during mid fall of October through the end of October as the leaves changes it colors.

Yelp
Great getaway! It's the perfect place to enjoy peaceful surroundings and set down all your devices (no cell service and wifi is best at main building). We stayed in Alpine cabin, so cozy and clean. We had been here several years ago when it was Sorensens and it was nice then, but now it's so updated and all refreshed. The kitchen is well equipped with stove, oven, nice pots and pans and dishes (but no microwave) . I liked the French press and coffee they provide. The beds were comfortable and the whole place was spotless. We also like the restaurant on the premises. They only serve lunch and dinner, but also have a couple "grab and go" items for breakfast. Coffee and tea is also available complimentary. We will definitely come back. We love this place.

Yelp
My sister and I had lunch there back in May of this year beautiful place, but it is quite pricey, but I understand why food was great, and the service was excellent

Yelp
Surrounded by the beauty of nature. Food that is nurturing and hearty. Time spent unplugged. All to nuture your soul, heal your mind, calm your nerves, to be at peace. Have been coming here for decades, whether as a motorcycle stop over when traveling through the beautiful Sierras in Spring or Fall or as a winter get away for snow shoeing the majestic Hope Valley or skiing at nearby Kirkwood. Dog friendly cabins so you can bring the whole family. The pictures I've taken during my stays here are still my favorites of all time. Bring a book, have a conversation, chill the "f" out. If you need bright lights, casinos and concerts, SLT is just 15 minutes over the hill.

Yelp
historic and well maintained resort. When I checked in I was greeted by Nicole at check-in. She was exceptionally professional and friendly. The customer service was such that she welcomed us as if we were old friends. As the first point of contact she set the bar high for the other employees. Danielle and Frankie who also tended to us at the front desk equalled Nicoles hospitality. Our expectations were exceeded by all. The cabins (each with various names) are throw backs to a simpler time and have a rustic but charming allure. If you are looking for todays "resort" amenities you may not find this place as charming as we did. The Sorenson, as I understand, has new ownership and have a master plan for upgrades. This resort was first opened in 1929. The cabin we had, Juniper, was comfortable, clean and roomy. Our cabin had two beds and a small kitchnette sitting area. The landscaping is natural and serene. The location is on Highway 88 and easy to find. This location is only 30 minutes from So. Lake Tahoe and a great alternative from the typical "location" accomodations. If you fish or participate in any outdoorsman activities, this is a very centralized location as a home base. There is a small restaurant that is not your typical "Cafe" as it goes by. The restaurant staff (Christine, a gentleman and another lady whose names I do not recall) provided 5 star service and were attentive as servers. The food was above average and priced typical of many resort hotel restaurants. Also highly recommend Alpine Massage 1-530-320-0626 Michelle is very caring and attentively your needs. I had originally planned to stay for 5 nights but due to a health issue I had to leave two days early. The management was very understanding and credited me back a prorated portion of my prepaid remittance. This I did not ask for or expect. It was done out of genuine care and concern for my well being. I am looking forward to returning and excited to see how the new ownership transforms an already charming getaway in the beautiful Sierras

Yelp
Would first like to thank Gilbert, you sir made this past wknd one I will never forget. Thank you for everything you did to make our stay PERFECT. The bartender Mahili, you sir are a true drink artist and a rare breed bartender. Pulls fresh herbs from the on site garden to make the best drinks. The food and service is top notch. We stayed in Yurt #6 and #25, both offer plush amenities and a view to remember. From beginning to end our stay was remarkable. We WILL be back. The entire resort is magnificent.

Yelp
This was my first weekend staying at one of the cabins here after driving past this resort for years. The cabin was small, cute and amazingly clean. We brought our two Golden Doodles with us, this place is dog friendly, and I made sure to pack allergy pills because I assumed since we were staying in a cabin that allowed dogs, there would be enough dog hair left over from past dogs that I would cause me to have itchy eyes and sneeze but that was not the case at all!!! The cabins were so clean! The cabin had a small wood stove and they stock it firewood so we kept a fire going the full three days we were there. The room had an assortment of board games and we played all of them while drinKing wine and champagne. The restaurant on site had really good food and a nice wine selection. Make dinner reservations and I recommend their famous stew. They have a sauna, fire pit, snow shoes. Hiking trails are directly behind the cabins and are clearly marked. We had a great time and I can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
My husband and and and I have enjoyed visiting and even eating at this resort destination in the past. We went in today so my husband could book our stay for our upcoming Wedding Anniversary however the hostess at the counter was incredibly rude. As soon as we walked in she kept asking if we were there for lunch. My husband was trying to talk to her about the cabins, but I really needed to use the restroom. I was going to coerce my husband to have lunch while we were there because I loved the scenic location, but she continued to talk to me as if I was a vagrant who was unwanted. She told me if we were not there to have lunch to use the porta potty out by the road. She insisted that the restroom was for paying customers. What the Hell? She never let me speak. I felt so mistreated, and left. My husband could tell I was upset and followed me out and I said we weren't staying here for our Anniversary.

Yelp
Scenery is beautiful during the fall season Food is not good. Bring your own meal and sit By beautiful colors

Yelp
Sorenson's is most definitely under new management--the kind that made my wife and me long for the previous one. We stayed two nights recently at the Desolation Hotel Hope Valley and found the operation disorganized, beginning with the amount we were quoted, which didn't match the figure on the website. We were there to hike, but the staff knew virtually nothing about area trails. Our cabin was comfortable but poorly maintained, with light switches that didn't always work and a slanting TP holder missing a screw that deposited the roll on the floor. You expect more for $400 (after taxes and fees) a night. We can't blame management for the traffic noise resulting from being right on Highway 88/89, but that certainly reduced our incentive to hang out outside. When we ended up having to leave a day early, neither of the earlier promises of a refund if the room was resold (from one receptionist) or a credit for a future stay (from another) were offered. Instead, the desk clerk merely said, "Have a good trip." Her promised emailed receipt has never arrived. A call to the manager was never returned. We'll follow suit.

Yelp
This review is for the cabin resort grounds, mini hiking area and beautiful evening setting dinner. Gorgeous spot to walk around and take photos during Autumn! Cutest decor with bears in the trees and near the tiny kids fishing pond! Come visit during Autumn when the Aspen is in its amazing fall foliage! While it was very cold in the evening, I sat outside with the heat lamps and enjoyed 2 bowls of yummy clam chowder and 2 glasses of huge cab to warm up while enjoying this gorgeous Aspen outdoor setting! Hope Valley - Beautiful area! :0)

Yelp
We recently brought our kids for a weekend here. We were so impressed with the level of personal service, and and quaintness of the property. We had the most amazing meals on property too! Do not pass up the restaurant! We were floored how good it was. What a gem! It just lead to the most intimate family weekend we've had in years. Thank you for hosting us.

Yelp
Our recent stop for lunch was a mediocre experience. One of us had the famous stew while the other had a sandwich. The sandwich was reasonably priced, had good flavor, and a decent value for the cost. The stew was a different matter. The large bowl of stew, for $14, was watery and had only 3-4 pieces of beef. Most of the remaining ingredients were had to discern, but seemed to be mushrooms. It also came with a small dinner roll. There was barely enough subsistence in the stew for a side dish. The setting is lovely and the cabins appear nice, but based on our meal, the food is overpriced.

Yelp
Lived in Tahoe for 4 years. This was our first time here, just for lunch. Scenery was beautiful, seating was great, food was good, but pricey for what it was, definitely tourist pricing. We had the burgundy stew, sorensons hearty sub, got chocolate, iced tea, and a small berry cobbler. It was $50. I wouldn't go back for the stew however the sub and cobbler were delicious.

Yelp
Wow what a diamond in the Sierra rough. Almost don't want to share but the people are too good. Especially chef Louis we bumped in to while walking the grounds for a must have photo, we invited him to join and attached. You must eat the beef burgundy soup. Repeat you must eat the beef burgundy soup. Enjoy!

Yelp
This makes me so sad. My husband & I have many fond memories at Sorensen's. When planning a trip to Tahoe for a special day in our lives (vow renewal), I was sad to learn that Sorensen's is under new ownership (Wylder) but I was excited to check out one of their newly renovated cabins. I spoke to a very nice lady on the phone multiple times over the past month & a half. I booked one of the renovated cabins, spending just over $500 for one night. I even spoke to this nice lady the day before our stay to ask about early check in & she said that as long as no one booked that cabin that night, it was clean & ready for us for the next day. We drove up to Hope Valley with our daughter & newborn son, hair & makeup ready for our ceremony, just had to check into our cabin, change into our nice outfits & head over to our ceremony location. My husband came out with a look on his face, knowing that I would be disappointed. My cabin was now unavailable. Both renovated cabins were unavailable despite my paying the higher rate to ensure that I would be in one. The man at the front desk said that they could not guarantee which cabin a guest would be in & also accused me of not speaking to the very nice lady the day before. He was rude & didn't seem apologetic for a lack of communication or something on their end.. this was not my fault! I was told I would be getting the Wa She Shu cabin. But he did adjust the rate to $375 & said that all he could do is offer to pay for our dinner. I was upset & stressed because we needed to get on the road. Side note: we have stayed at Sorensen's before. I know what these rustic cabins look like inside. But when checking out the Wylder website, you will only see photos of the renovated cabins. You will be sorely disappointed if that's what you're expecting every cabin to look like inside. So we walk into the Tanglewood cabin, it smells of pet urine, there is a large stain on the carpet infront of the fireplace, I'm standing there with my newborn & my pretty dress & just cried. (I sound like a huge brat right now but this is not what I booked & not how this day was supposed to go) We changed into our clothes really quick, got into the car & my husband checked us out. We will be paying $160ish for the taxes & cleaning fee (which is fine & understandable considering our last minute cancellation.. & I say "will be" because I have yet to receive my refund for the balance.. keeping an eye on that) & we ended up staying over near Stateline. The lack of communication or employee training or whatever happened on their end, the customer service is not what it used to be.... sadly, we won't be staying ever again.

Yelp
This was my second stay over visit. Like many, I discovered Sorensen's on a day trip....I'd been to Grover Hot Springs and ventured out. Had lunch at the restaurant then walked around the grounds. I'm crazy for Aspen's, and the Grove that contains Sorensen's is amazing! After reading some other reviews, I must comment on the one dated Oct 15th, using the word Mississippi. My guess is they comments were total projection on their part...maybe they are entitled and rude people, from a city, that expect immediate action. I love the owner's response...lovely. I saved all summer to take myself here for my milestone Birthday, taking advantage of their special-3 nights for price of 2 mid-week. I could not have had a better time! Loved my cozy cabin, a bottle of birthday wine awaited me, and many of the trees still had their colorful leaves. The restaurant is top notch. One evening I had the seafood pasta...it was divine! Jumbo shrimp and sea scallops with chunks of wild salmon in a delicate cream sauce. I love that they serve their Beef Burgundy Stew all day! I dined on that another evening. Besides all this wonderful-ness, what makes this all come together is the staff....their excellent hospitality is evident. Come to the mountains and get their good tidings...unplug and relax in Hope Valley! You can't go wrong at Sorensen's Resort.

Yelp
My husband, dog and I spent a magical weekend enjoying our cozy cabin (Sheepherder), lovely service and winter wonderland surroundings. We were provided with plenty of wood for our little Franklin stove. The cabin came with heaters as well, so we were always toasty. The sauna is also wonderful and a great place to meet some of the other guests. We had a long snowshoe hike up a trail (fire road) that starts adjacent to the resort. It was fun to introduce our dog to powder! We feel so fortunate to have been able to spend a weekend at Sorensen's in the winter and have already made reservations for our next visit in the fall. Thank you for everyone who works there. You took great care of us!

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast and coffee. Service was fast and friendly. French toast was a bit undercooked.

Yelp
This is our second stay at Sorensen's - we stayed two nights in the Rock Creek Cabin and the sound of the nearby creek was sooooo relaxing!! The cabin and surrounding area were charming and the cabin spotlessly clean. The manager, Frankie, was very helpful and an ideal, friendly face for the front desk. Everything about the cabins and hospitality was wonderful. We were celebrating our 33rd anniversary and had dinner in the restaurant. Our only issue was slow service in the restaurant - both dinner and breakfast. They seemed to be understaffed? We will be back and stay even longer next time. Thank you for an overall wonderful get-away.

Yelp
My husband and I brought our 2-1/2 year old here yesterday! We stayed in the Dance Hall Cabin and found it to be charming and roomy and rustic! We had a terrific walk after a nice lunch in their cafe! The owners are very accommodating and Leo, our waiter , for dinner was great! We had a beautiful wild salmon dinner and loved the ambiance of the small and cozy cafe! Very nice wine selection! We are looking forward to returning in the near future ! Very relaxing and a lovely walk through the woods! Beautiful setting! Great way to enjoy Fall! Need to spend more then one night next time!

Yelp
Sorensens has had a very good winter, although the danger of travel this year was extreme , it was so gorgeous . The little cabins took a hit almost buried , but it made for a winter wonderland. The staff worked extra hard , understaffed for sure . Looking forward to a new season . I love Hope Valley !

Yelp
We got stuck in snow and this place is warm cozy. It's definitely a great experience to spend Christmas here.

Yelp
Do not go here. It is such a dichotomy... Beautiful scenery WORST SERVICE EVER!!! I have been by here on a couple of occasions as it is near Hope Valley. Each time I was made to feel like an idiot. This terrible service made my fall color Hope Valley experience dark. I HOPE they close! My wife referred this place to a colleague and they also were not only made to feel bad, they were also overcharged! (They went back upon noticing and were refunded) Side note...my daughter had a similar experience. So much so that she remembers this as a joke. As you go by the beautiful scenery, keep your trip happy and don't stop at sorenson's. Update...i called today to let them know of my review. Instant attitude, the man said they were very busy. He said I should have said something at the time. It ended with him saying, "screw you". Ugh I hope i become the scapegoat for your future.

Yelp
I came to Sorensen's per a family recommendation and stayed one night with my husband and baby. This was my two month olds first vacation and time seeing the snow! The cabin was warm and welcoming, and the snow made for awesome pictures with the quaint setting in the background. I left raving about this place! So now why am I giving it only two stars...well, as stated above, we were referred to Sorensen's Resort. There is a special listed on their website which reads as follows: SEND A FRIEND, WE SAY THANKS! Refer friends or family to Sorensen's and when they stay and mention your name, we'll thank YOU with a free night. *Offer valid Monday - Thursday, non-holiday (other restrictions may apply). I filled out my family member's information expecting them to receive the free night certificate in the mail. After a month went by, I emailed the owners and received a response today. Due to only staying one night in the cabin, the family member who referred me doesn't get a free night. Had I spent $500 on lodging, they would receive their free night. No where on the website does it state there is a minimum of $500 needing to be spent. When filling out my family member's information with the front desk gal, she never stated I had to stay two nights for this special to be valid. Bottom line is while we had such a great trip, we won't be returning to Sorensen's Resort. I am HUGE on the honor system and when a website states a free night for the individual who referred you, I expect that to be honored. The whole situation is too bad because we recommended this place to two other couples. I will be letting them know that I no longer recommend it.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful resort with restaurant to stop, stay over, relax and eat along with seeing the fall colors that abound in this location. The food and service is great and the location a five star experience.

Yelp
(3.5) THIS IS FOR THE RESTAURANT ONLY! First off I want to say this place is lovely and I am sure it is a nice little place to stay. I have eaten at the restaurant two times and the first time was nice. It was winter and the dinning room was cozy and the service was good. However, this past time was different. I had just ridden my bike up a 5 mile hill in the heat so to say i was thirsty was an understatement. When we got there we sat on the patio area which is very charming. I saw another biker getting ice water and I had to have some. I waited a few minutes that felt like eternity and no one had approached us so I went to find someone and the woman I asked seemed less then thrilled to help, in fact she was annoyed. Anyways, she ended up bringing the water. She was not very friendly and seemed like she didn't want to help us which I don't understand. If you don't like serving people DON'T GET INTO THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS! Anyways the meal was ok, but the kicker was when we got the check. The waitress charged us for tap water WTF. Who does that??It wasn't bottled water or anything. Anyways it left a bad taste in my mouth for this place. I'm not saying I wont go back because the first time was much better, but I will definitely bring my own water next time.

Yelp
My husband and I want to thank Wylder Resort, (Hope Valley, CA), for their extraordinary care for us when we were marooned on the east side of the California Sierra Nevada Mountains during wildfires in September 2020. We had been evacuated from multiple forest service camp grounds as National Forests closed across California. We landed at their campground for two nights before they too had to close. The staff had been checking in with us every day at our campsite to keep us up to date on developments. Finally when their campground was ordered closed they put us up in one of their cabins up the road. The staff was kind and outgoing, and made us feel welcome in the midst of a crisis that was affecting an entire community. Wylder Resorts is the new owner of the old Sorenson's Resort. Sorenson's was loved by generations of travelers. New beginnings. I want to thank them for their kindness and spirit during our stay.

Yelp
2.5 stars. This review is for the accommodations because we didn't eat there. No comments on the sauna because we didn't use it. Pluses: Tea, coffee & hot chocolate complimentary for guests during the day. They allow pets - or that could be a minus for some. The cabin was clean & not worn/run down. There were adequate pots & pans for cooking. Minuses: There was no electricity from when we arrived at 3pm until after 11pm, due to a construction mishap on the property. There was a gas stove, but cooking dinner in the dark was a challenge, even if we were both smart enough to bring flashlights - I would have been a stellar girl scout. Couldn't charge our phones or listen to music. Plus we had to worry about all the food we brought going bad because the fridge was off for so long. No we weren't offered a partial refund or free meal during our stay for the inconvenience. There was a small water heater in the cabin. So we could either wash the dishes or take a shower, not both. Showering in the dark was also inconvenient. I had to skip washing my hair because was afraid there wasn't enough water & the shower head sprayed a mist which would have taken forever to rinse my hair. Plus there was no electricity to blow dry my hair. The shower stall was pretty tiny & I'm a small person. Another downside is there is no heater in the bathroom so it was freeezing cold! There is nothing worse than getting out of a warm shower into a meat locker/cold room. There was only 1 gas stove/heater, located in the sleeping area, to heat the entire cabin. Not enough. At check-in we were told that there were problems with the heater. Well, I wish they placed us in another cabin because at about 1am the heater turned off so we froze all night despite the down comforter - uh it was in the 30-40's that night! The night was so cold that the little pond near the entrance was partially frozen in the morning. Bed was a full/double, not a Queen as stated in the description. No sitting area so we either had to sit in at the chilly kitchen table or on the small full/double bed. There was 1 chair in the sleeping area but there were 2 of us. Generally wouldn't be an issue but there isn't much to do in the area at night so you're likely to be in the cabin. Yes, the cabins are located near the road so traffic noise may be an issue.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed in Larkspur this past June. All the staff were very friendly, patient, and accommodating. The room, which is adjacent to the Dance Hall, was quaint and the Queen-sized mattress was comfortable. There is a carpeted loft area with minimal headspace accessible by a ladder attached to the wall, best suited for small children. There is no fridge or microwave, no internet and only Verizon cell service. We were aware of all this. Although the bedroom itself is private Larkspur shares a common sitting area with an adjacent room, Lupine. We were surprised to discover it also shares a bathroom with Lupine as well, which turned out to be ok only because Lupine was not booked the three nights we were there. After the fact I noticed the website does mention "Shared small sitting area and full bath". The shared bathroom I must have originally missed and instead assumed a room at this price point would have a private bathroom... Larkspur is considered a "Bed & Breakfast" and so complimentary breakfast was included in the price. The breakfast was wholesome and filling, and offered enough options to please most palates. The grounds behind the Resort provide some beautiful hiking and exploring opportunities. In June we encountered many beautiful wildflowers and introductory views of not-so-distant snow-covered mountain tops surrounding Hope Valley. After our stay we received a card in the mail good for one complimentary breakfast or lunch upon our next visit to the Resort. With five of these cards you can receive a night's lodging midweek, Monday - Thursday, non-holidays. We had a good experience overall!

Yelp
We returned to Sorensen's after a lapse of nearly 20 years to find it just as wonderful as we'd remembered, and in many ways even better than the sweet cabins we remembered when we first came with little kids. We returned with our twenty-something daughter and her new husband, they stayed in St. Nicks, a perfect honeymoon cabin, just as sweet as can be, with the lovely little porch facing the woods. We stayed in Johan's, which is quite tiny, and not very private (faces the dining porch on one side and the campfire circle behind), but we came to love our little cabin and slept beautifully on the cozy bed. The food was even better than we remembered - very high quality ingredients - tender meat for the carne asada, good fresh fish, tasty ravioli, a great way to start off the weekend! We also loved the friendly feel of the place - from our warm though harried welcome at the front desk, the many regulars greeting each other, families, couples, kids, old folks, everyone just seemed to happy to be there! Yes, the road is close by, and you do hear it, especially from the cabins nearest the road, but you'll soon forget about it and savor the location for how perfectly placed it is to explore meadows, mountains, streams, whatever your heart years for. We'll return - and not wait 20 years this time! Oh, and the lack of wi-fi and cell service? That's a good thing. Disconnect to reconnect!

Yelp
We went here with our friends for breakfast and dinner as they stayed in one of the cabins. Beautiful setting with quaint cabins. Cabins were very clean and grounds well maintained. The food was good but not outstanding. Prices on food a little high for what you get but the setting is awesome. If I needed a place to stay in the Hope Valley area I would stay here.

Yelp
We just got back from our stay here & the overall experience was great. Had dinner there the 1st night & unfortunately it was a disappointment, their jacked-up prices were terrible for what it is worth. Yes, their beef stew is not good...hope they'll change their recipe, I had a huge bay leaf floating around with a lot of spices that were not tasty at all & it was way too watery only tasting like old wine. However the rest of the stay was awesome, we totally enjoyed the snow & the fact that they allow pets in some of their cute cabins, oh & the bed was excellent, we slept like babies. They are clean & neat, we will definitely want to come back for sure!!

Yelp
The people working here are rude and the place is terrible. We went up there for a bite to eat and maybe stay the night. We have fled the Wildfires and everyone has been great and considerate and helpful. Not at Sorensons - at 10 minites to 4 pm we came in and asked for a bite to eat. They said "no the kitchen closes at 4" -- no consideration for the situation we'd have to drive over an hour to find another place to eat. Okay so we had candy bars and asked if we could warm up by the fire. The lady at the desk waved us in and we went over to the fireplace and the waitress said " no you can't sit here even for a minite....im setting up for dinner" -- in an annoyed tone. The temperature was dropping and the people sitting at the table in front of the fireplace invited us to sit with them but we felt so unwelcome we left. They said the food wasnt very good so no loss there.

Yelp
This place is not your typical hotel. It's comprised of a restaurant, bed and breakfast, a series of cabin, and a sauna. The restaurant was pretty good but a bit pricey. I had dinner there for twenty something dollars and had salmon that was just a bit dry but the asparagus and salad were very good. They serve a mean breakfast, the whole schebang... eggs, bacon, waffles, juice, fruit, coffee. The people there are the nicest people ever. They offered us a complimentary glass of wine, which is included in the price of the room. The cabins are really charming. Ours had two full/double sized beds, a kitchen (equipped with cooking and eating utensils), a bathroom (with plenty of fluffy towels), and a wood burning stove (the wood is provided). They have wi-fi but it's a little slow, good for checking e-mail but probably not much more. There's no cell phone reception, which is probably good if you want to get away. The sauna is great after a cold day on the slopes. Too bad they don't have a hot tub. I highly recommend this place for as a nice departure from the crowds.

Yelp
Shed your Silicon Valley at Sorensen's! The below is a response to a Nextdoor.com inquiry into cable cutting. I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF SORENSEN'S and it's customer love for it's lack of technology to help us be more, well human. Read on: Take it a step further and cut your connection to all.... OK explanation: I go to this place called Sorensen's near Tahoe once a year. http://www.sorensensresort.com/ A HUGE part of their magic is they do not have wifi. Nor do they have TV or phones in the rooms. What I have discovered by going there is that when I first get there I am uptight, in a high strung high speed mode, and act even a bit entitled. But after several hours I realize the experience is about simply being, being with the people there, and being with the surrounding nature. Very quickly I appreciate appreciating that which is all around and not just on the device in front of me. And soon I am interacting with the people there like they are family. In other words Sorensen's helps me shed my Silicon Valley! Ha that should be their slogan: "Shed your Silicon Valley at Sorensen's! After I stay there for a day, I watch people come in and interact with the staff. I can tell these people are still angsty and need to shed their Silicon Valley. I watch as the staff remains cheerful and patient and helps the people in front of them learn to take a deep breath without technology. Soon they are part of our family too. It is a magic I hope always remains, the lack of technology facilitating the family. OK I am not trying to do an advertisement for Sorensen's (Though I should for their lack of technology that brings us back to nature and humanity). BUT I am saying that, as a cable cutter, maybe there is more you should cut, at least for awhile, to get back in tune with, well, life. :-) OK back to the 50+ devices I have floating around my house, car, work, and life. HA HA! I am such a technologically humanitarian hypocrite! Or is it humanly technological hypocrite! :-P ;-) - Hans
