The Best Restaurants and Bars in The Woodlands | Eater Houston

"Yet another Houston-born restaurant has worked its way north to The Woodlands. The dessert shop, which is a short walk from the Waterway, offers a true showcase of award-winning pastry chef Sara Brooks’ versatility and vision for sweets. Find cakes and cookies of all kinds, including brownie-and-cookie hybrids, red velvet cookies dunked in white chocolate, and a multi-layered mousse, plus coffee drinks for a pick-me-up. Best of all, this dessert shop stays open relatively late (until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 10 p.m. every other day) meaning you can stop and stay awhile for dessert after dinner." - Laura L. I don’t even know where to start with how much I loved my visit to Dessert Gallery. From the moment I walked in, everything felt cozy, inviting, and perfectly sweet. It wasn’t busy at all when I went, which actually surprised me. The place deserves to be completely packed because it’s that good. I was honestly a little sad to see there weren’t more people inside because this spot should be full of happy dessert lovers every single day. The staff was wonderful. Everyone was friendly, patient, and so kind. You can tell they really care about their customers. Their customer service alone makes you want to come back, and the desserts seal the deal. They also validate parking, which is so helpful because parking around here is pretty limited. That small detail made the experience even better. Now for the star of the show, the brownie sundae. It was absolutely incredible. I honestly think it’s the best sundae I’ve ever had in my life. It reminded me of the one Kevin ordered in Home Alone 2 in New York, pure decadence and pure joy. Only difference is I didn’t have to be in a fancy hotel to feel that kind of happiness. The brownie was rich, warm, and fudgy with the perfect mix of chewy edges and a soft, gooey center. The vanilla ice cream was so creamy and flavorful that you can taste the quality in every spoonful. The hot fudge was warm and silky, the whipped cream was light and real, and the cherry on top finished it off perfectly. Everything about it complimented each other so well. The warm brownie against the cold ice cream was pure perfection. This sundae honestly made my whole day. I can confidently say it’s the best one I’ve ever had, and I’ll be comparing every other sundae to this one from now on. I can’t wait to come back, and next time I’m bringing my kids with me because they’ll absolutely love it. I even want to bring some of my clients here because it’s the kind of place that deserves more attention and more smiling faces. Dessert Gallery is a hidden gem that deserves to shine brighter. I’ll be coming back every chance I get.

Best Italian Cream Cake I’ve ever had. My boyfriend needed a cake for my birthday. I am pregnant and out of left field wanted this flavor and which was not what he planned for andthey were able to get it done. It was soooo delicious and well made! Will definitely be looking for another one for my baby shower, but not last minute 🥹🙏❤️Thank you for your beautiful tasty cake!!

Absolutely loved my visit to Desert Gallery! They have an excellent collection of desserts – each one crafted with care and precision. I particularly enjoyed the Pecan Pie Bar – rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. What stood out the most was how attentive and careful the staff were while preparing drinks and desserts. You can genuinely feel the passion and professionalism in their service. A unique and thoughtful touch was having the WiFi User ID and password printed on the menu – a small but welcoming detail that adds to the customer-friendly vibe. Overall, an excellent experience. Highly recommend this place if you're in or around The Woodlands/Spring area and looking to indulge in some top-notch desserts!

Google
We really love the cakes at Dessert Gallery - the Woodlands; however, the last 2 times we have visited the portion sizes have progressively been shrinking. This picture is of a piece of their Mom’s Chocolate Cake I haven’t even taken a bite of yet! .For $11.50/slice I would have expected more. Again, the cakes are really good but I feel like we’re getting cheated. Either that or you need to provide better training to your staff who are cutting the slices.

Google
The cake looked beautiful but tasted terrible. We served it to 20 guests at a 50th birthday party, and not one person finished their slice. The cake was dry, stale, and had the unmistakable taste of being frozen—one guest even commented that it “tasted frozen.” For such an expensive cake, I expected much better quality. Instead, it was rock-hard, dry, and disappointing. Unfortunately, this dessert put a damper on what should have been a special celebration. Save your money and order from a local bakery instead.

Google
This place is my favorite dessert place in the world! I have tried a few flavors of their cakes and they are all amazing! Mom’s chocolate cake is out of this world delicious and the best chocolate I’ve ever had in my life!

Ashley V.

Google
Service was great. Everyone there was super kind and helpful. The chocolate chip cookies were good, cold, but good flavor and texture. The no sugar added mini carrot cake cupcake really disappointed me. For the price, it was just not good. It was so dry I could barely eat it. And so small. The world’s best brownie was not good either. Weird tartness and cold and dry.

Google
I had been hyping myself forever on Mom's Chocolate Cake and finally bought a whole one for my birthday. It was the biggest disappointment of the day. The frosting was overly sweet and gritty because it was oversaturated with sugar. The only reason I am giving it an extra star was because the cake was decent with good texture, but nothing to write home about. Also the parking situation is so bad, it took me driving around the block 3 times before being able to snag a spot.

Yelp
It's my birthday and my kid took me to Raising Canes for dinner. Not gonna lie, it was a bit of a let down but I got to pick dessert. And what better place than the shop I used to go to back in the 90's. Now I've never been to the woodlands location before. It's in that waterway district near the mall and so parking was sure to be a B. But this being thanksgiving week it actually wasn't half bad. The shop is smaller than the Richmond location. But that's just more goodness compressed into a TLP. There are no birthday specials alas. But they did have some free samples of tiramisu. It was good but I had to get my favorites. J's birthday cake and the Big O. The birthday cake is thicker like brownie than some of the other chocolate cakes. I can't describe the frosting this go around because my punk kid at all the frosting off it while my attention was focused on the Big O. But the cake part was moist. As for the Big O it was Ooooohhh. No When Harry Met Sally diner scene experience. But it was F'n awesome. Staff was super helpful and nice. Wanted to eat more but my blood sugar wouldn't tolerate it.

Yelp
In the area and randomly found this place and decided to come in! We were helped immediately and given time to select what we wanted. I shared with the person behind the counter that there is a nut allergy in our family and she was helpful in telling us what to avoid. Tip-- they did share that they don't regularly disclose if something that nuts (peanuts or tree nuts) so if you have an allergy, make sure you tell them so they can help! There were a small set of tables to sit inside and enjoy your treats if you wanted to. We got a variety of things to share, tres leches (this is okay, a little sweet and pretty standard), tiramisu, pecan pie bar (delicious but crumbly/messy to eat), Oreo truffles and confetti truffles (my nieces and nephew absolutely loved these)! It was pretty pricey, but always happy to support local businesses!

Yelp
This is the perfect stop after eating anywhere on the waterway. Love this spot because it has something for everyone. My son typically likes cookies but I like a big slice of cake to work on for a few days.

Yelp
I stopped by Dessert Gallery after dinner for the first time. I love the fact they were open late. The delicious looking items had me wondering what to get. Ordering was easy, I went to the counter, and waited a few minutes for them to pack my order. I took the items to do and I am glad I did because the slices were huge. I ordered the strawberry dream cake, it was moist, rich and had the best icing. For my husband: Mom's chocolate cake , he said it was really good. For my son: Snickerdoodle cookies. Should have bought more, he ate the large cookie in two seconds. Many wonderful selections and a great place to satisfy a sweet tooth after dinner. They also validate parking so if you are in the area and plan to stop by, this is good to know.

Yelp
I was so excited to see that they opened a Dessert Gallery location up in the North!! I visited Friday night and ordered the Tiramisu and the Tres Leche cake slice, both totaling $23. It's a bit pricy but i like to think that's it for the experience and enjoyment! My friend really enjoyed the Tiramisu as it was rich in chocolate and coffee flavor. I enjoyed the Tres Leche as it was super delicious, milky, and sweet! The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because the staff behind the register was a little bit rude and sassy upon answering my questions.

Yelp
Food - First of all, the desserts were simply outstanding! My daughter tried the Tiramisu and I opted for the Chocolate cake. Both were fresh and tasted great. Service - The poor lone girl at the register was desperately trying not to roll her eyes at the group in front of us who kept changing their minds. She seemed relieved that we knew exactly what we wanted. Ambiance/Decor - Honestly a cute (but somewhat small) seating area with spaces for a few groups and comfortable seating. Price - As expected, given the location, the niche market and the operating hours (open till midnight on a Friday!), it was a little pricey, but in line with Cheesecake Factory costs for their slices. Anticipate spending around $10 per item. Parking- Waterway parking is always hit & miss, so we'd opted for the theater garage and walked over. I did see on arrival that they validated parking for the waterway garage. The unexpected - Apparently, everything is treated as a to-go order and slices are individually sealed in plastic carriers and in our case put into a bag WAY too large. This explained the giant bag left on the table next to where we'd seated ourselves. (as seen in the top of my first photo) I'm guessing this is the business model, but it would undoubtedly save some $$ to have a true dine-in option. Given the dearth of late night options in the area and the quality of the product, we'll undoubtedly be back.

Yelp
This place is almost too good. We were in town for Ironman TX and stopped here 3 different times. Everything we had was amazing, but the blueberry cake and the carrot cake are the type of things I think about in the middle of the night lol. It's easy to get to and it's in a very cool part of the woodlands, close to the water.

Yelp
Ordered my brother-in-law a cake for his birthday yesterday. My sister didn't know anywhere in The Woodlands to get a "non-grocery store" cake. DG immediately came to mind and we were so excited that it was so close to her! And apparently, German Chocolate cakes are really hard to find. I'm not even kidding when I say this cake is 15 pounds haha. It's SO dense and beautiful. The white chocolate personalized plaque is such a cute personalization they offer. The online ordering was quick and easy too. The bakery itself is adorable! Super bright and super tempting with so many desserts on display (glad I ordered online or I would have been way too tempted)! The entire staff was working so hard, everyone seemed to be doing at least three things at once. All while being super helpful and accommodating. Thank you for making his birthday so special!

Yelp
The Dessert Gallery Bakery and Cafe if very cozy and comfortable. The people are very friendly, greeted us politely and even spoke is code so we didn't know they were cleaning. The pecan pie bar is delicious as well as there brownies and other desserts. They also have a nice selection of expressos.

Yelp
I recently ordered a custom birthday cake for a special birthday celebration from the Dessert Gallery. It was amazing!! You can order online which I did, and even uploaded a special photo that I wanted on the cake. The cake was done perfectly and tasted delicious. I couldn't have been more pleased. Also, the young lady who brought out my cake carried it to my car since it was such a large cake. Wonderful cake and service. I highly recommend!!

Michael M.

Yelp
Overpriced Too sweet Too trendy over the top "slop" Difficult location for take out Not much seating for eat in (other than tightly squeezes outdoors) I seriously doubt if I will be going back. Oh well, don't Houstonians like traditional European style bakeries like they have in Northeast and old Rust Belt Cities?
google avatar

Butter C.

Yelp
Who doesn't like slices of cake!? The Old Fashioned Yellow Cake is my favorite! I don't have time to bake a cake and Dessert Gallery is one of my go tos.
google avatar

Jana A.

Yelp
The lemon raspberry layer cake was soooo delicious. The service was great. We went after a concert and had a great experience.

Yelp
Why 4 stars? Because this is sugar heaven. --- --- --- There are enough options to choose from that it might take at least 5-6 visits to try everything that you want. They have about 20 cakes and can cut you off a slice of any of them. And there are plenty of other single-serving items like cookies, cupcakes and other random treats available too. We opted for: Rocky Road Texas Sheet Cake: To be honest, I'd prefer it without the Rocky Road part, but it was still enjoyable. 4 stars. White Dipped Red Velvet Cookie: It was fine. Better than just a plain red velvet cookie, which is already a good thing. 4 stars. Funfetti with Caramel Buttercream Slice of Cake: This was the highlight for me. I wouldn't sing about it from the mountain tops, but I would eat it and not be upset. 4.5 stars. We will almost certainly return next time we are in the midst of a cheat day in The Woodlands!
google avatar

Sabrina O.

Yelp
Cakes were not that goods and it was incredibly packed with a bunch of people who didn't speak English. Men bumped into me without apologizing and I'm pregnant, it was just a bad experience. I also noticed they had religious cookies and hardly any for Easter, makes sense why so many people were there. It didn't feel like the woodlands felt like I was traveling and in another country.

Yelp
Tried it Friday night because I wanted a cupcake. Looked like a true bakery vibe so I was excited to order the strawberry cupcake, assuming since this place is marketed as a bakery that it would be a real strawberry cupcake meaning made from scratch with real strawberry's. It's clear to tell the difference between real and fake. Needless to say when I put this cupcake in my mouth I knew it was straight from the box just like the many Betty Crockers I had before. Extremely disappointing since it's $5 which can get me 2 boxes of mix. Whatever! If you want a box cupcake this is your spot!!! I actually went back today as well because I saw they had smoothies and I rly like smoothies so I ordered a strawberry banana smoothie thinking to give them a second chance. While watching the worker make it, my heart sank as I saw her pull out a liquid labeled banana strawberry flavoring. EXTREMELY on brand for this shop! As this is their overarching theme!! There was no fruit added just this lovely artificial liquid along with 90% ice. Needless to say again when I tasted that I was hit with fake strawberry. I got my money back this time. Do not come here go support a real bakery who actually takes time to make there items from scratch.

Suma P.

Yelp
Loved the chocolate cake there! Very customer friendly.... My kids and I enjoyed the pastries here.
google avatar

Christian Q.

Yelp
Not a good place to visit. Incredibly gross pastries. The service is laughable Customer service is not the priority here :)
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
This is a little bit more of a review on the service than it is the bakery, but unfortunately I didn't find the bakery items all that special either. The most disappointing thing that I noticed is the cashier was on the phone trying to help another customer, yet the line was growing to the door. There were three other staff members right behind the counter to my left, not doing anything but talking. No one let us know that she'd be right with us or tried to help all of the customers themselves. I noticed one seemed to be a manager and they were discussing when the other employees could go on their break. The man behind me even asked if he could order there and she said no and gestured to the cashier who was still trying to assist a phone customer and said "You place your order there." It just really rubbed me the wrong way. The cashier was the only friendly one and helped us quickly as soon as she got off the phone. The one thing I wanted to order was out of stock and apparently had been for a while. That's fine as things happen, but there should be a sign warning that it is unavailable if it had been out of stock so long. Lastly, I think the desserts we did try were just mediocre. I didn't think there was anything special enough that would warrant another try.

Yelp
Got a slice of vanilla cake when I got home noticed that it was missing a layer of frosting - called to notify about the issue - was told that they were fully aware that it was missing and had hopes the place that makes the cakes wouldn't make that mistake again - no apologies or bring it back well refund or replace with a different slice - just it is what it is. And that's what bothers me because they sell it knowing it's not made right and don't say anything to the paying customer - just say it and let me decide if I still want it or choose another cake. It came off very sneaky and deceptive.
google avatar

Anokhy D.

Yelp
We went for a post-dinner treat, already excited that there was a dessert place open after 8 pm in the Woodlands, and got a whole bag of items and their hot chocolate. You're definitely paying for the size of the hot chocolate (it was fine/good) but everything else felt appropriately priced, especially for the A tier quality. I didn't get pictures because we devoured everything quickly, but I also got the chocolate dipped chocolate chunk cookie (you will want milk), the billionaire brownie (think millionaire shortbread-level of richness), monkey bar (variation of the magic cookie bar), and a slice of the lemon blueberry cake (I already know I'll be getting this every time). It was a weekend night and it filled up fast, so if you're in a rush, preorder or opt for a weekday!

Yelp
Mouth watering displays of sweet deliciousness await your decision when you walk into this brightly lit and cute business. The staff were friendly and fun to talk with. They could tell me and my 10yr old niece were on a mission for desserts and they were eager to assist. Fortunately, we were anxious to try everything, but we held back and opted for a small variety. The strawberry cupcake, amazing. The lemon bars had good flavor but a little dry. The chocolate chip cookies, spot on yummy. The lemon pie-cake was light, creamy, bursting with flavor and tasty. The best chocolate brownies were moist and loaded with chunks of chocolate, a little too much chocolate for me, but they were still good. The coconut cream cake was absolutely a winner with us all! So much flavor. The frosting wasn't heavy and the cake itself was light and airy. Beware if you've never got a slice of cake from here. They are big. Perfect for two people. Being from CA and just in TX to visit family, I always forget Texas doesn't go small on food portions. Works for me!

Yelp
Thrilled to see my favorite bakery close to my home in The Woodlands! While not as large as the original location on Kirby, the shop is cute and clean, with indoor and outdoor seating options. Like the original, the glass cases are filled with gorgeous treats, meticulously arranged and displayed like the storybook bake shop in your sugarplum fairy dreams. I picked up several gems for the evening: Millionaire Brownie (rich and delicious but does not have caramel, like other millionaire brownies I've had,) Chocolate Decadence (this was stunning! Rich and creamy texture,) Pecan Pie Bar (so buttery, sweet, and salty... perfect,) Sand Tart (average,) and Cranberry Shortbread (excellent.) It did feel odd to have to wait a while for my order... particularly while a large team of employees just stood in a group, behind the register, and I was the only non-employee person there. The original DG has been my go-to place for birthday/special occasion cakes, so I'm thrilled it's now closer to home :)
google avatar

JaDaven E.

Yelp
Really good desserts! Got the red velvet cake, key lime pie, and the strawberry crunch. Each was very good! A little pricey but the slices are big. Red velvet was 7.5/10, key lime 7/10 and strawberry crunch 6/10.

Yelp
Nice casual ambiance, nice music playing. Great customer service. Variety of baked goods. Great smelling coffee. A little pricey but ok for its location. Clean establishment. A little on the sweet side. Heard good things about this place so we decided to try it. Lots of tourists visit here. Would come back again if in the area.

Yelp
On a rainy afternoon in July 2024, there's only one person ahead of me. That person was paying at the register. 4 or 5 sales assistants stood around the cash register talking among themselvew and not a single person asked if I needed help. So I waited around and eventually had to ask for help to get some sweets. This is off to a bad start. I don't recall anyplace did business this way. The display was indeed beautiful. But there's neither description nor price displayed. As I stated, I had to ask for help to know what the flavors were. Some flavors were obvious, but the customers should not be left guessing!! I asked for various items and was surprised by the total charge. But since this was a gift for someone, price was not the biggest issue. Upon getting into my car, I noticed that I got more items than I asked (hence the higher than anticipated price). I had told the sale assistance for certain items and told that person not to pick an item afterI found out the flavor. E.g. I distinctly told him not to pick the vegan cookie. Well, vegan cookie was packed, along with 3 other cookies that I didn't want, and one of the cupcake flavors was wrongly packed, too. Anyway, this was a rare bad experience in the Woodlands. Don't think I've ever had a shopping experience this nonchalantly carried out. Won't be back.

Yelp
Last night I came in about 5 till close, I didn't feel good about it but we had a date night sweet tooth and we were close by. We were given a warm welcome by one of the employees considering the time. Now seeing as I haven't heard of this place before last night, I had no idea what to expect. I gotta say though, the cupcakes we bought were some of the best we've ever had. I can't remember a time I had a better one, that's for sure. I'm headed up there right now to get a couple more. Don't pass this place up, take my word for it, you'll be impressed.

Yelp
I'm a dessert aficionado. Let's just put that down now. Given my history, as well as personal ability, I know my way around cake, pies, custards, tortes, and many more delectable. The Dessert Gallery has top notch options, and I focused on the tall cakes in the case. Once I selected the one that would soon fill my aching belly (chocolate mousse), I was told I'd be served when they called my name. And then the hammer fell...$10.50 for my one slice. Okay, yes, I'm in the Waterway area, the slice is big, and I knew it would be delicious, but damn, son! I thought about how many Hershey kisses or M&Ms I could get for $10. I considered a point of ice cream from Kroger. But no! I will get the cake slice. I will eat it! I will NOT be sad that it took my last Hamilton from my wallet. In conclusion...great fare, expensive, and the potential cause of buyer's remorse. Not for me, though. I'll save my coins and come back in three months.

Yelp
The cake slices are soooooooo good and worth the money and stay fresh for DAYSSSS. This place is absolutely adorable and the staff is so nice

Yelp
Amazing quality. I want to volunteer there just learn how they make everything. Easily the best carrot cake. Tres Leches and Mouse were extremely good.

Chris C.

Yelp
Ordered 2 slices of cheesecake. You get toppings but I only put cherries on one slice. Both were so damn good lol

Jose L.

Yelp
Service is terrible, workers gave us a nasty attitude upon walking in. We ordered our things and one of the bakers rolled his eyes at a request
google avatar

Yelp
Nice selection of cakes and sweets. Simple coffee and espresso menu. Good location for a quick stop snack while walking along the canal. Small but has outdoor seating if necessary. Don't plan to sit down if the location is busy.

Yelp
Looking for a birthday cake last minute, this bakery has great hours and cakes on hand. The chocolate mousse cake was so so moist and delicious. A little pricey, but I will go back for next occasion.

Yelp
Amazing Service by Alexis and the sweets were amazing as usual ! Will definitely be returning to this location

Yelp
I ordered Jennifers cake and it was Super Dry. The flavor was overtly sweet as far as the actual cake. The fudge inside was only ok. Icing was good. They were Out of Ribbon so it did not look like the pictures. It was big cake but it was also very expensive for it just being a 1/4 sheet cake with no fondant. Would not buy again. There was no parking in front of the store, so you have to factor in getting the cake to your car. In comparison I would prefer a Walmart chocolate sheet cake taste wise. That's how bad it was.

Yelp
Delicious variety of baked goodies! We got Fruity Pebbles Cookies, White Dipped Red Velvet Cookies and White Dipped White Chocolate Cookies. The cookies weren't too sweet. It was perfect! Will definitely visit this bakery when I visit Woodlands again.

Yelp
First visit to the newly opened woodlands location which is extremely smaller than the Kirby location. The service was very good and the restaurant was nice and clean. The majority of their cakes are really good with French vanilla and mom's chocolate cake being my favorite. Tried the new cake slabs which were a miss for me. The slabs are way overpriced for the size and they never were moist like the cake slices. Nevertheless, they are still one of my top three bakeries in the Houston area.

Yelp
Great desserts.. but be ready for the price. Great service. Friendly, helpful and kind. It's nice and clean inside and they have a cute display of desserts. It was delicious

Yelp
I ordered two cakes for graduation- 9 -inch German Chocolate and the Lemon cake... both were delicious! When we received the cakes, they came right out of the refrigerator so they were cold... Upon arriving home, I placed them in the refrigerator... I highly recommend letting them sit out to room temperature....they taste tremendously better once they are at room temperature. Very flavorful, moist and everyone loved them! so glad to have a good bakery in the Woodlands... And we can take a break from HEB cakes! highly recommend!

Yelp
Cakes look great but the servers are confused, can't find my cake, and took forever to put six cupcakes in a box and hand them to me. It's an overly complicated system. Also, there is no parking nearby so be informed that if you are picking up a cake you may have to carry it three to four blacks back to your car. If it's raining there is no cover.
