The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Ferndale, Michigan | Eater Detroit

"The spacious Ferndale outpost is the fourth for the coffee shop, including Royal Oak, Rochester, and Detroit. The cafe prepares an assortment of baked goods to sell alongside New York Bagel Company’s bagels, delivered fresh down the road each morning, and bocadillos in both jamón and vegan options. The shop hosts community roasting classes and sells whole coffee beans a block away at Walking Lightly’s zero-waste refill shop, where customers bring their own containers to fill. There’s a small parking lot connected to the shop as well as street parking." - Courtney Burk

Google
Great coffee, although pricey! We had a hazelnut latte and a purple door. They were really yummy with quality ingredients. I almost gave 4 stars because my husband ordered a decaf latte and received caffeinated instead. And we even paid extra for it! Food was good and ambience chill. I’ll definitely try again and hope they get the coffee order right this time!

Took a great beginner level espresso latte art class at the lab here. The demonstration is clear and the practice is really fun and interesting! Everyone got two chances to make their own latte. Would definitely recommend to any beginner with 0 experience!

Loved their croissant for the soft chewy texture and good yeastie flavor. Also enjoyed the recommended green lychee tea! It is fruity and earthy and very delightful. The space is well suited for grinding away at studies, work, or socializing!

Stopped by for a quick coffee on my way north and loved it here. I had to find street parking, but that was no big deal, and the place was easy enough to find. The staff was very friendly, and the iced oatmilk latte I got was great! The place itself had a really great vibe, and I wish I could’ve stayed longer. Seemed like a great place to sit and chat or get some work done.

Went to the Ferndale location for the first time yesterday since it is 2 minutes from my workplace! Had the Coco Cabana, which was delicious. I was worried that the grilled pineapple syrup would be too acidic on top of espresso but it wasn’t. It added just the right amount of sweetness. Also had the lemon poppyseed muffin; phenomenal heated up. Reminded me of my mom’s homemade lemon poppyseed bread. Ended up going back today to get the same drink on my break at work and a second one for my husband along with an almond croissant and blueberry muffin. We will definitely be longtime customers and can’t wait to try more off the menu .

My wife and I popped in (with our baby) while visiting the area. We tried their pumpkin latte, pistachio latte, everything bagel and spinach and feta puff pastry. We loved the vibe of the place and the spinach/feta puff pastry was super tasty. We both thought that the lattes tasted the same even though one was pumpkin and one was pistachio, but they were both drinkable. We were also bummed that they didn't have highchairs, so I had to go out to the car and bring our stroller inside so our son had a seat. Overall we still liked this shop.

Google
I am deeply disturbed by the actions of Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters and their continued support for harmful, misleading propaganda. Recently, I visited one of their locations and noticed Palestinian stickers displayed prominently on the register. These stickers accuse Israel of genocide and apartheid, spreading lies and misinformation that only serve to inflame division and hatred. I took it upon myself to address this issue directly with the CEO of the company. During our conversation, I explained in clear terms how damaging and divisive such materials can be, especially in a business setting where people from all backgrounds come to enjoy a neutral, welcoming environment. The CEO admitted he was unaware of these stickers being placed in his store, yet he expressed reluctance to remove them. His reasoning? The potential backlash from taking action, even though these stickers clearly offend and harm Jewish customers who may walk in. This is not just a matter of poor business practice; it is an issue of responsibility. By allowing such harmful propaganda to remain on display, Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters is tacitly endorsing and spreading divisive misinformation. In a world where unity and respect should be prioritized, businesses like Dessert Oasis are contributing to unnecessary tension and hostility. I strongly recommend that people reconsider giving their business to a company that is so indifferent to the welfare of all customers. If you stand against the spread of hate, division, and misinformation, do not support Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters. Their actions and failure to take responsibility for the content they allow in their stores speak volumes about their priorities.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, tea and pastry shop. The ambience was nice, and as a non-coffee drinker, I really enjoyed the Kerouac, which is an earl grey tea latte with lavender and cinnamon. Absolutely lovely. My friend got a cranberry orange pastry that I definitely recommend warmed. It was both sweet and tart. We will be coming back.

Yelp
While the coffee is great, there is not even one refill for a cup of coffee without paying another $4.44. And it's an 8 oz mug. Not even a big mug. Too pricy for my taste.

Yelp
I drive past this spot all the time when going to visit my family so finally popped in. It was a chill day and not to crowded. I wasn't sure what I wanted but they had a specialty drink on display so I went with that and a blueberry muffin. They take your order and deliver to your table if you dine in. My drink was aesthetically pleasing and very yummy but I was a little surprised that they gave me a piping hot drink in a glass with no handle. I also expected it to be a little sweeter considering the ingredients that were in it ( coconut cream, graham cracker cream, marshmallows, etc.). I'm not sure if the muffin was gluten free but it was super dry and crumbly. The flavor was good but I did not enjoy the texture and would not get again.

Yelp
Super nice neighborhood spot. Everyone was friendly and it's a high quality product! We had a lavender latte, a peppermint latte, and a peanut butter cookie. Everything I could ask for in a coffee shop!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop so many seats available. Nice pastry and drink options. Tried the Kyoto sencha tea and the matcha latte before. Enjoyed both 9/10

Yelp
The drinks are a bit expensive here but I'd say they are worth it. I've had the chai tea, kerouac and vanilla lattes. They were all very tasty. The Kerouac is essentially an earl gray tea latte with lavender and cinnamon, I got it with whole milk and it is earthy and a little sweet. I've never had something like that before but it's my favorite drink here. The coffee itself was very good and the vanilla latte I got was the perfect amount of sweetness/creaminess. They are also very aesthetically pleasing with designs on the top of your drink. There is a lot of space for people to work/hang out and it is a very cute spot. They have an assortment of pastries, I've only had a chocolate croissant and it was flaky and warm- very yummy. There seems to be adequate parking in front and on the side streets for free.

Yelp
The people working here could not be any nicer but our first experience here was a rough start. we love the Rochester location and heard they set up a roaster with a coffee shop attached. I believe this is their headquarters where they roast their coffee and make their baked goods. When you come in you see the register and baked good case and a few spots to sit and then there is a larger area to sit down a small incline in the flooring. They have an interesting open seating area with art on the walls. They also see some merch here. There seems to be a classroom and some restrooms off to the side. The menu is fairly simple. They seem to offer less than the Rochester location and had less cheesecakes or baked good than the other location. When we arrived it was not incredibly busy and the people helping us were very nice. They gave us our card and told us they would bring us our drinks. We waited for nearly half an hour while others came and went and got their drinks and treats. Finally we asked and they admitted they forgot about us. They were very gracious and very apologetic and then brought us some drinks and cheesecake. I love their cheesecake. It is very good and less than $6 a slice. While it is no Cheesecake Factory, you are going to get a nice slice for a lot less. If you like cheesecake I highly recommend trying their cake. As far as the coffee does, they are always very aesthetic and nice to look at, but their mochas were not very strong and did not taste like there was any chocolate in it, and their hot cocoa also did not have a strong chocolate flavor, it was very faint. I like their coffee, it is smooth, but I would have liked it a bit stronger, hotter, and more flavoring (chocolate which I am not sure was even in there, it tasted like a plain latte). I would not give up on this location. It is newer and we like to support local. This location is located in the subdivisions of Ferndale and not downtown, so I am not sure how often we would make it over here, but we will visit a Dessert Oasis location again soon.

Yelp
A place a kept meaning to check out and finally did. The indoors is so cute, a place you'd like to hang out for a while. We had iced teas, one matcha and one peach, both delicious. Staff were friendly, and I look forward to supporting this local business in the future.

Yelp
I went here during my dog's morning walk and the coffee did not disappoint! The owner is ok with dogs entering for ordering only which is great as leaving my furry friend behind while ordering coffee can be stressful for him. They roast their coffee in the back of the shop and it shows when you just taste their coffee! Their barista really knows what she's doing! I also picked up a bag of their roasted beans and it also does not disappoint!

Yelp
With tax, $10 for 2 "large" hot latte. When I saw the size of the cups, I thought that I was given small cups by mistake. The coffee wasn't hot.
