The 26 Best Things Made in Michigan’s Cities | Eater

"Detroit, with its museums, galleries, and plethora of public art, is a creative hub with a rich history. For a view of the contemporary Detroit artist scene, visit Detroit Artists Market, a nonprofit gallery that is all about showcasing the work of local artists. Started in 1932 — yes, smack in the midst of the Great Depression — it’s one of the best established nonprofit art galleries in the Midwest and one of the top places to view and buy art that has been made in Michigan. Between rotating exhibits, an annual holiday show, the Elements Gallery, and featured artist wall, there are plenty of opportunities to feed your cultural side." - Vox Creative

One of the underrated gems of the city. I've bought a number of things here over the years. It always has a wide display of different kinds of art including, jewelry, paintings and ceramics generally for very reasonable prices. Definitely make it a stop if you're in the city.

My grandson and I were impressed with the amount of selections that were priced so that even a 12 year old young man's allowance was sufficient for gift giving. We were rushed through the gallery because we arrived only 15 minutes prior to closing, but we will return again for several gifts that my grandson is still talking about for birthday gifts.

Wonderful installation Fly/ Drown. The gift shop is spectacular also. Visit the website for details. A great holiday expression is scheduled for November. Ya gotta see for yourself.

Attended Art Opening. Variety of art, ceramics, cards, jewelry, hats, stuffed animals, ornaments and more.Refresh your home displays with unique handmade artwork. Mark it on your calendar for Noel Night.Be sure to stop in the Scarab Club too.

The space is ok. It did not reflect art n culture aesthetic that I would expect for a city with an 85% African American population. Spaces like these need to be interrogated and challenged, because Africana culture needs to be centered n visible for a cultural space in this city to truly be a destination for those who come to witness one of the blackest/ afro-diasporic city in North America

Google
As an Artist myself, DAM, is where other Artists can “Shine” just as I did 2018, with the help of DAM. Thank you for letting me shine to my expectations!

Google
An excellent place to see the latest in contemporary Detroit art. DAM's Elements Gallery has a nice selection of jewelry, ceramics and gift-type items at a selection of priced points.

Yelp
This was the first time I went to this artist market. It's not really what I would call a market, it was much fancier than that. I guess it's called that because they showcase different Artist from e everywhere. The Artist that I really fell in love with was Catherine Washington, a new Artist. She is an amazing local talent. View her crochet work in my pictures - see the beautiful face she crocheted! I can't believe what she can do with yarn. Incredible! The Artist Market has many beautiful and unique pieces of other artwork, like jewelry, crafts, ceramics and more. I Will definitely be back...they had wine and cheese too!

Yelp
I've visited this spot multiple times. It's a museum/artist market for local Detroit artists. The front usually has a display of multiple artists or a theme. The back has local work that you can purchase- pretty reasonable priced. I actually bought a painting from a local black artist here. Some of the art is not on display but if you tell them the type of artwork you are interested in, you can possibly review some of the unseen pieces.

Yelp
Wide selection of stuff from local-ish artists, heavy on ceramic goods. Found the perfect white elephant gift here.

Yelp
We stopped into the Detroit Artists Market during Noel Night and loved so many things! There were all kinds of items and mediums to choose from- artwork, candles, coasters, cards, etc. There were also a nice range of price points to choose from so don't feel like it's a pretentious art gallery with everything being insanely expensive. Not only would this be a great place to get something for your own dwelling, but also a great place to get a gift for someone! Make some time to stop in and browse their lovely collections and treat yourself or someone else :)

Yelp
Went to the DAM to see the opening of the current All Media Exhibition. It's a really nice gallery and a significant cultural landmark. The art was very creative. I love that the barriers to the artists are very low. They show a wide variety of local artists from new up and coming artists to established talents. It was great to meet with the artists too. Nice gift shop as well. If you are going to the DIA, go down a couple more blocks and check out the DAM.

Yelp
I really wanted to visit the Detroit Artists Market, but when I called to inquire about the mask policy I was told it was whatever one is comfortable with. With COVID cases still very high I was hoping a mask policy was in place. Unfortunately, I will not be stopping in.

Yelp
This place is a Detroit institution. The displays change a few times a year, though there is a gift shop type area in the back - which is really more like the front cause that's where you enter, not off of Woodward. The gift shop selection is usually more moderately priced and less subject to change than the rest of the work on display. Most of the stuff here I usually like, and if I don't, I usually at least find it interesting. The person at the desk always asks me if I need help with anything but I'm always just browsing. Maybe one day... They have fancy schmancy garden parties at the Whitney, too. I've received invitations but never gone.

Yelp
I've often made a mental note to stop at the D.A.M. when I saw it en route to Tiger's games. The Yelp invitation for the holiday artist's market was the tipping point. I wanted to devote a good percentage of my holiday spending to local companies. I found the perfect gift (a metal lawn sculpture) for a family member. I really enjoyed the photography by Sooney Kadouh of Metrodevious.com. I am definately going back for the digital photo of the Fox Theatre! Love it!

Yelp
Located on Woodward the Detroit Artist Market not only shows exceptional forward and fresh art work form local artists, but they also manage to support other other realms of art- like poetry readings by WSU student s and staff. Essentially DAM is rooted in supporting the art culture of Detroit. Originally called the Young Artist Market and founded in 1932, the goal of this gallery was to provided income for artists under 30. Rad! throughout decades DAM had been a great supporter of the creative side of Detroit. This non-profit gallery is a great place to get a sense of what Detroit is about art wise. For more info on exhibitions take a peek at their website.

Yelp
A great creative space. I saw so many things that were unique to any other art space. I particularly enjoyed the guy sitting next to the food table completely asleep snoring, while his wifey/gf/chica shopped for a long while, and would go over and shake him awake just to get his opinion. I think his opinion was that his couch would have been great. Really nice people, good selection of stuff. Just didn't find anything on this trip. It's great to see it filled with people looking for things. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
The D.A.M. is a great place to see exceptional art and more. We strolled in last night for a poetry reading given by graduate students and faculty of Wayne State University. While there, we were able to look at much of the art and other wares for sale, which I'll get to. The fact that D.A.M. Hosts events like the WSU Writers' series makes it a gem of a gallery in my mind. Not only was I able to hear some great writers, but the work in the gallery was exceptional as well. The work currently showing is work from Cranbrook alumni as well as current students. The host of the WSU Writers' series claims it will run until the end of April (which he also said "don't quote me on that") So I highly recommend checking out the Cranbrook-ites before they move on to bigger and better things. I gave D.A.M. four stars because I was taken by much of the art on the walls and the large boutique area that houses custom jewelry, purses, wallets, photo frames, and much more. Anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind art piece will expect to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for it - but for general gallery, having accessible pieces of art that are affordable and cool ( www.artomatic.org for example) would help foot-traffic a lot. This being said, many of the boutique pieces are overpriced (again, not surprising). But don't fret! I did spy a few really cool items for under $20, and multiple coin purses/wallets for only $10 - totally custom, totally awesome. Don't be afraid to stop in if you're on that side of town to check out the boutique; you may find something you've been looking for! Also, there is one more event at D.A.M. for the WSU Writers' series. I have the contact info for the host; I'll edit this review when I find out, or simply call D.A.M. if you're interested!

Yelp
The DAM is a Detroit institution. It has been around for an impressively long time, and a good reason for that is its inventiveness. From its holiday show to its small show and others, the DAM has managed to alternately show stunning work and affordable work. I bought a fantastic ceramic piece there for under $50-- I feel bad for paying so little (artists deserve more), but I was happy to have it. The staff there are also very helpful. Pretentiousness is not an issue.

Yelp
Diverse display of contemporary art by local artists, which included everything from jewelry to notecards to pottery, paintings, and purses. Everything was pretty reasonably priced...I didn't see many items over $200. The place was pretty small, but there were definitely some unique items that I haven't seen the likes of before. Not necessarily a destination in and of itself, but definitely swing by if you are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
What a great hidden gem to visit. Loved the art work. The art work is random, thought provoking and local. I look forward to returning

Yelp
I came here on Friday night for the opening of the 2013's Design Show called the Dam Design Aria. The designs were not my taste but that's what makes the world go around. The pieces included lighting, chairs, tables, jewelry, graphic design and costumes out of the Michigan Opera Theatre's design room. The best part of the show was a lady singing in opera. Her voice was incredible. The whole room commanded her attention. If i am ever in the area, i may stop in and check out the new designers but i'm not in a rush to go back any time soon.

Yelp
The Detroit Artists Market is a non-profit contemporary gallery founded in 1930 by a group of local artists to exhibit and sell their work. The DAM has created thought provoking exhibitions installed in a gorgeous modern gallery space. It has a nice selection of jewelry, small artwork and photography. A great place to visit.

Yelp
A lovely place! Peter--the owner, maybe--was very nice and talked to us for a long time when we got in. Cool stuff.

Yelp
I really liked the space that the store is in, not that this makes the review but it is well redone. As for the goods, they have a great mix from all locals and have some really cool poster prints, glassware, and ramdom jewelry. If you are in the area, drop in for sure.

Yelp
faced with the conundrum of a gift for a present exchange i saw a listing on yelp for DAM's holiday show. so i went to the DAM for their holiday art show this year with the intent of getting a present for said christmas party. i wanted a gift that wouldn't be alcohol or lottery tickets or some stupid chia head. i wanted something that the person receiving it would actually covet. i also wanted to spend less than 20dollars. i was impressed with the setup they had and also with the lack of anyone following me or trying to show me stuff. immediately i saw some hand blown ornaments that were priced in the 15-18 dollar range and decided on my present. james found a decorative plate with the street grid for downtown detroit for 20 bucks. nothing there was that outrageously priced and i only saw a few things priced over 100. also i recognized many of the pieces from local art shows like the DIY fest in ferndale. if you happened to miss out on something you really wanted or couldn't afford it at the time, you just might find it here. i think we might just hit a homerun with this year's presents. love, juston

Yelp
The Detroit Artists Market is the best gallery in town to see and purchase local art. The gallery space hosts juried exhibitions and the Elements gallery is a small sales gallery which is wonderful place to shop for jewelry, pottery, glass and many other types of art. This is my go-to spot for unusual jewelry and local gifts. DAM is a non-profit and membership provides opportunities for special events and discounts. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. An added bonus for mid-town: there is convenient parking available behind the building!
