How Detroit’s Square Pizza Became a Big Restaurant Trend | Eater

"Launched in 2012 by a longtime local employee who later won World Champion Pizza Maker at the International Pizza Expo, this business not only sells its take on the regional square pizza but also consults with and trains other restaurant owners and retails the signature steel pans used to make the style." - Brenna Houck

Google
I just tried their pizza for the first time and let me tell you - excellent! Spoke with the owner while I was picking up and compared notes. My wife is originally from one of the Detroit suburbs, so we’ve had Buddy’s Pizza many times. Buddy’s is one of the OGa of the Detroit style. Detroit Pizza Co. is pretty darn close, if not on par with Buddy’s, and that is saying something for those who know Detroit style pizza. Nice crust, crispy on the outside and with some good density and flavor on the inside. Brick style Wisconsin cheese (you can tell from the oiliness of the box) that is perfectly burnt around the edges in the pan. Cheese sauce properly applied on top. Well done guys!!

Was really excited to finally try it out. Boy was it good. The ambassador bread is to die for. Really liked the salad along with the d-town pizza. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back to try something new!!

If you live in or visit the metro Detroit area and you want to try good Detroit style pizza, put this place on the list. Be sure to add the flavored crust. To me there is a sweetness to their sauce. Can't go wrong. No dining room, so carryout or delivery.

Brent Palaian

Google
Detroit style pizza company is great! Your George style pizza is the best. The crust is crispy. The dough is wonderful. The toppings are great, the sauce is even better. They're nice people. The people that work there are very nice. I wish I lived closer. I would eat this all the time. If you don't eat this pizza I will.

Google
This place is the real deal Detroit all the way. The pizza was awesome, the edges were super crispy and the flavors were amazing. This was one of my favorite Detroit style pizzas. If there was one flavor I did not like it was their MARGHERITA, but the rest were top notch. The cheese bread was also Detroit style and fantastic. Wish them the best, great pizza.

Google
It's hard for me to find good gluten-free vegan pizza. A friend told me they had a good gluten-free detroit style pizza here, so I ordered today, and It was absolutely delicious. Also, the gluten-free free crust is made in-house, too. I'll be back.

Google
Absolutely fantastic experience. Pizza 10/10 Service super fast, super friendly 10/10. Their pizza is amazing fresh and amazing the next day too! Definitely recommend!

Alyson Gerwe

Google
The deep dish pizza was delicious. The gluten-free version with vegan cheese was solid, but not exciting - excellent taste but the dough and cheese texture weren’t ideal.

Yelp
This has been my family's favorite pizza for the last 7 years. If we order this is our go too. I work at a new job locally and have recently ordered catering. I was thrilled. Everything was hot and fresh and Delicious. It was On time and working with the Staff was Wonderful. Thank you Keri!

Yelp
I first heard about Detroit Style Pizza Co from One Bite Pizza Reviews on YouTube, and Dave's glowing recommendation convinced me to give them a try. Honestly, I'm so glad I did because this is some of the best Detroit style pizza in the area. The dough is perfect: chewy, crispy, and packed with flavor, a trifecta that's surprisingly hard to get right, but they absolutely nail it. The Harper Hornet is my personal favorite, but their classic pepperoni is just as amazing. I'm honestly surprised they only have 3.6 stars on Yelp (at the time of writing this) and they deserve much higher in my opinion. This place is a gem and a solid go-to for takeout. Highly recommend giving them a try if you're a Detroit-style pizza fan! Check out my Instagram for more @hangry_detroiter

Yelp
We loved this pizza! We're typically more "thin and crispy" kind of people, but this is some of the best Detroit style I've ever had. We just got a plain cheese, and it was full of flavor. It's mostly a grab-and-go place, but there are a few tables inside you can sit at. They also offered us paper plates and napkins and things when we asked if we could sit in and eat.

Yelp
I'm going to make a BOLD claim that this pizza is the best Detroit style pizza in Metro Detroit! Better than Buddy's, better than Cloverleaf, better than Jets...the GOAT pizza. Pizza is always crispy, with a perfect sauce to cheese ratio. It's another smaller pizza shop, but great service and great employees. Perfect spot for a quick pizza and often never too busy. Highly recommended.

R W.

Yelp
The most underwhelming pepperoni pizza that I've had in a while. $30 for a thick slice of bread. To little cheese and pepperoni, way too much sauce.

Yelp
my boyfriend and i usually ordered chicken bbq pizza but omg they put mustard bbq in there and it absolutely tastes DELICIOUS! even with ranch whoooo. i would like to order it again and again.

Yelp
This is my favorite pizza place on the east side. The pizza is very light compared to a traditional deep dish pizza. The sauce is almost more like a sweet pasta sauce than your heavy marinara. If you are a round pizza fan, this will be your favorite deep dish option. I have not had a poor experience yet!

Brian F.

Yelp
Don't get the Hawaiian Carmel thing. They went too serious with the Carmel. Stuck to my teeth every bite and unfortunately spent a whopping $35 on the extra large. Huge letdown. Nice staff but bad 1st experience. The star is for the food. Not the staff.

Yelp
So good! Deep and delicious but not too greasy. Not many tables but what they did have was quite clean.

Heywood J.

Yelp
Heywood's special rating: 2.0/5.0 The service was mid. The ambiance was mid. The food was mid.

Yelp
A guy I used to work with (Joe) makes some of the pizzas here so I knew that I had to try! I've been dying to try his pizza for years so I could not be more proud that they opened this pizza place! I ordered the cheese bread and a large square pizza. Both of which were SO GOOD. The pizza was so crispy and thick and the sauce to topping ratio was perfect. This place is a little bit far from me, but it's worth every second. This is authentic and true Detroit style pizza! 10/10 highly recommend.

Yelp
It's a pizza tour date with the kid, stop #44. We have eaten at most pizzerias near us, branching out. This one was passed on to us by a friend. They are easy to find on a main road and in a plaza. We ordered a small square pizza with old fashioned pepperoni, cheese bread and 2 Root Beer. The root beer is bottled by them. They also had grape, ginger, black Cherry and strawberry. I thought the root beer was spot on very similar to Towne Club or Faygo. The small square pizza was Detroit style, sauce on top and old fashioned pepperoni on top of the cheese as well. I wasn't impressed with the sauce, kind of watery and little seasoning. The old fashioned pepperoni wasn't to my standard. I like the pepperoni to be a little crispy on the edges, this was protected by the sauce and didn't get to what I thought would be good. The pizza crust seemed like a lot of bread and not enough toppings. Cheese bread was better than the pizza. You could taste the Italian seasoning they used and it made the bread that more delicious. The ranch was superb but again the marinara was watery and not seasoned. Cost $22.60.

Yelp
Our order was for pepperoni and mushroom, but just came with mushroom. How hard is it to F up a two item pizza? Would not answer the phone when we tried to call back repeatedly. Plus they charged me $2.99 for $1.49 bottle of Feigel that was pre-priced.

Yelp
Saw this on Fox2 News and it's right down the street from me so decided to support a small local business. And I am so glad I did!!! Did a pick up so can't comment on their delivery, but the order was correct, ready and hot! Got the D-Town deluxe large square deep dish. Excellent!! Fresh toppings, perfect crust, tasty sauce. Also ordered the cheese bread. Note: we don't like parmigiana cheese which is sprinkled on, so ours doesn't have it) Super tasty and the perfect amount of cheese pull. First time here and certainly not my last.

Matthew D.

Yelp
I love this place. If you like Detroit style, this is the local spot! Staff is friendly, pizza is fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Best Detroit style deep dish hands down. My favorite "mom and pop" pizza joint hands down. The Saint Clair Shores location has never disappointed us and we have ordered from there at least a dozen times by now. I really hope this place never loses its motivation to keep cranking out great pizza.

Matt S.

Yelp
It's okay. I like Detroit style but I'd have to just say ok. Seemed a bit soft in the doe. Second time I've tried them.

Christian S.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this pizza place. It's close to my home, had good promo codes/pricing, and it appeared to look tasty. The first time we tried it, we got a couple Detroit style pizzas. They were fairly good. No complaints. So I decided to order from them again, and the second time was not as pleasant. They delivered us the wrong order, and couldn't exchange because of food safety. The 3rd time we tried, it was greasy and lacked toppings. Will most likely not be ordering from them again.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood spot! The flavor and crisp on the crust is always perfect, and you can tell they use high quality cheese and toppings. Our favorites are the Harper hornet, meat lovers and the Hawaiian. We go out of our way to drive over here to get it because it really is that good!
google avatar

Randi C.

Yelp
I liked this place a lot. Good pizza but a little pricey. They also sold Faygo which is an automatic A+. Hard to find good quality Detroit style pizza anymore and this hit the spot.

Yelp
Ordered a pizza at 5:20pm, delivery time was scheduled for 6:02. At 6pm the restaurant called to say the anchovies on the side were out and would be refunded $2. At 6:30, called and was told it was "out for delivery". I live a mile from the store. At 7:00pm called back and the pizza hadn't left yet and was told "well we should have called you" Order cancelled. Never again for a pizza I used to think was great!

Jo L.

Yelp
Ordered from Goldbelly and the wrapping they use for the pizzas is so thin that when the order arrived all the pizzas were exposed and I had to throw all them in the trash because who knows what they were contaminated with. I emailed this business and they told me to reach back out to Goldbelly! Poor shipping and not so nice response will keep me from ordering again!

Yelp
A place simply called Detroit Style Pizza Co. makes me nervous. It gives me the impression that the owners believe they make the best Detroit style pizza, which makes me nervous simply because if somebody thinks they're the best, they normally aren't. Well, I'll be the judge of that. Nearly a 4, just feeling stingy. I had take-out, so I can't speak to anything but the food. I ate two slices of the, whatever it's called here, meat lover's pizza. From what I could tell, there was only ham and bacon on it. I found it interesting (odd, really) that they put whole strips of bacon on the pizza. I don't care for that, because one bite and the strip comes right off the slice. The crust is probably the best part about this place, though the sauce is pretty decent too. I'm giving three stars just because compared to my personal favorite Detroit style pizza place (Buddy's), it's really not that close. I think this pizza is marginally better than Cloverleaf, and maybe even only a little better than Jet's, except DSP Co. costs a bit more money. I'd certainly choose this place over any coast-to-coast pizza chain if I lived near a DSP Co., but there are too many better local options by my house to ever warrant going out of my way for this pizza. Good, not good enough.

Yelp
I have been a rabid fan of Detroit style pizza 30 years before that term was coined, going back to the mid 1980s. I am a big fan of Loui's, Buddy's, Cloverleaf and Shield's, in that exact order. I heard about this place and wanted to try it since I used to live in the same town. Well, it looked superb with a perfectly caramelized crust. However, it was immediately apparent that it suffered from blandness and a lack of a buttery-tasting crust. I wish the owner would line up the pizzas I cited above and do a serious blindfolded taste test and see if they agree. It was decent pizza, but it doesn't compare with the old Detroit icons. Mix in more butter and it should largely resolve the deficiency.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Waited over an hour and a half for my order to be made. Staff didn't begin making my order until I arrived for pick up. Waited 45 minutes at the restaurant for order to completed. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Honestly, used to go to jets all the time. Ever since they hiked their prices and changed their order sizes around we decided to try this place by recommendation from my 10 year old son. It is a little pricey but no more than Jets or their equivalent. Their pizza is insanely good, cheese and toppings on bottom sauce on top, crispy edges and more than enough flavor. I highly recommend the hockeytown Hawaiian. It's absolutely amazing, the bbq sauce isn't as sweet as some other, which is the best part because it pairs with the pineapple perfectly. Great cheese bread too, ranch is a bit on the vinegar heavy side which isn't an issue at all, just a little less sweet than most.

Yelp
Wow, what a disappointment this company's pans are! . I have seasoned and used over 50 woks, skillets and other carbon steel, as well as cast iron cookware in the last 17 years, and have had nothing stick as badly as these "authentic Detroit Pizza Co Pans". I did 7 coats of seasoning--starting with three base coats of BuzzyWax Erie blend carbon/steel/cast iron seasoning paste, followed by 3 coats of peanut oil; all were ultra thin coats and on all other woks and skillets over the last decade have produced phenomenal seasoning, an exceptional nonstick finish on Almost all carbon steel/cast iron that makes me proud! NOT SO WITH THIs Detroit Pizza Company Co. pan! My first Detroit Pizza was a DISASTER! It stuck on all 4 edges and took me an hour of scrubbing with hot water and soap and a Brillo pad to get the dough off, particularity on the corners! Perhaps their pre-seasoned pans are better, but I know this: PURCHASE A LLOYDS PANS DETROIT PIZZA PAN instead! I am so sorry I wasted my money on this sub-par steel pan instead. I am re-seasoning, and hoping for the best, but still, this pan now terrifies me!

Mj B.

Yelp
As a native Detroiter living in St. Louis who has eaten at Loui's, Buddy's, Shields', Primo's, and Isle of Capri, among others, the Detroit Style Pizza Company's offering on Goldbelly was without a doubt the worst Detroit-style pizza I have ever had.  Little Caesar's Pan!Pan!, which is the lowest rung of the Detroit-style pizza ladder, is infinitely better. In addition to the poor quality, the size of the pizza will barely serve 2 people.

James C.

Yelp
So we ordered this pizza from the website to be shipped. We got the three pizza popular deal. It took almost 2 weeks to get even though it was shipped over night. These pizza are small. They are personal size to he honest. I was really expecting larger pizzas for the cost. 80 bucks!! Wow. The taste was good but pricey. One pizza the crust at the bottom was soggy. Not good. I would not justify cost for taste. Being from Michigan and now in Vegas, I thought I would miss good pizza from home. Well....I can enjoy fresher pizza more times than the cost of this. I would not recommend. I even had my brother in law try fresh as he said it was awesome. When I showed him the sizes of the pizza he even said a few choice words. They should give me a redo.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Bought through Goldbelly to be shipped to MA. Better than expected for flash frozen. Nice change of pace from the pizza in our area.
google avatar

Taryn T.

Yelp
If I must be honest, I went in with low expectations since most places can't seem to make gluten free crust taste delightful. I was pleasantly surprised after trying the breadsticks. The crust didn't have the usual gritty taste that I've experienced many times prior. The pizza sauce and cheese had tons of flavor and they have quite a variety of toppings to choose from. I would highly recommend Detroit style pizza co.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Ordered 3 Motown Meat Supreme pizzas via Goldbelly (we do not live close) after seeing the review on Barstool Sports. Which after that big review it did take 2 months to deliver but it was worth it, we had the first one tonight and it was amazing with a very crisp crust and great flavor. If you blindfolded us we would of never guessed this was frozen pizza reheated. Definitely recommend it if you like deep dish (ie Buddy's etc).

Brenden S.

Yelp
Apparently bacon on pizza means 1 strip of whole uncooked (looking) bacon on each slice. Gross. Aside from that, steadily gone downhill the 3 months as a custo with the first time being absolutely amazing.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
I ordered a D-Town Deluxe 3-pack with gluten free crust on Goldbelly. I thought the crust was really good for gluten free. Unfortunately my pizzas didn't have any ham or mushroom, only pepperoni, bell pepper and onion. I found that disappointing.
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
We ordered extra pepperoni. I was extremely let down when each slice had 2 pepperoni. They weren't giant pepperoni either. Come on.
google avatar

Hope R.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years and before when they were at the Gratiot location. Their pizza is delicious, we usually order extra cheese on our pizza but we don't have to here. They have always been very consistent and the service is fine. We are right outside of the delivery zone, unfortunately so I can't speak to ordering delivery but just the quality of the food. They are definitely one of the best in the area in our opinion.

Suz W.

Yelp
By far the best square pizza. Every time you think it's the best ever, the next one beats it! Great job!
google avatar

Phil K.

Yelp
Used to be excellent I used to order every week the Pizza went to hell in a handbasket downhill slide and I've been ordering there for almost 3 years now they can't even compete with Pizza Hut and you're paying top dollar no I will not get their pizza again I will not order anything there again
google avatar

Yohnny F.

Yelp
Ima gonna tell you right now, you want this pizza in your life. I don't know what these people are talking about who didn't give this a good review, maybe they're just haters, I don't know, it doesn't make sense to me. But what I do know, is that the dtown deluxe is prime pizza sent down from the pizza gods to the good people of Detroit. And the jalapeño honey this place has on the side is incredible. Like for real, get some of it. The pizza here will make your hand immediately form a chefs kiss from one bite. Dont believe me!? One bite, everyone knows the rules it for yourself
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
My brother told me to check this place out, knowing that I love hole in the wall places. Doesn't look like much, but man looks are deceiving! Probably some of the best Detroit Style I've ever had. Ordered the Margherita In The D and a pepperoni jalapeño with a honey sesame crust. It was SPECTACULAR! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
First time trying this place out tonight. By far the BEST pizza I've ever had. I will never order my pizza anywhere else... needless to say I'm ordering again tomorrow

Ty B.

Yelp
My pizza was so damn burnt and tasted like it been sitting in the box to long. I asked for bbq wings the sent honey something smh just a bad experience for my first time.

Yelp
Rating: 3.75 stars if i could Taste: Simple ingredients. Not overly greasy. Clean. Not bloated after eating lots of dough. Tonight my wife and ordered in because of the snow storm. We had an award winning BBQ chicken pizza, and a pepperoni pie. Very good. The flavors were distinct and simple. Not overly sweet on the BBQ chicken (like jets), and the pepperoni was simple too. My wife and i are fans of sauce under our cheese tho- not plopped onto each square slice. Still, it was tasty. Over all, I would say it is good. The only ya but, is that I have been such a jets pizza Slut that I couldn't say DSPC was above par of Bommarito's, Tomatoes Apizza or even Supinos for that matter. Jets still holds a soft spot in my gut. Probably always will. DSPC is definetly better than Pizza Hut, dominos, sorrento, buddy's, cloverleaf, and any other pizza joints out there in The D these days. I will definitely go back again. Try other pies. Maybe try something better than before. If anyone has any suggestions, I will gladly try it:)

Yelp
About a month or so ago, I took the plunge and ordered some Detroit style pizza on-line. Never had it before. WHATTA TREAT!!!! I got it from a second party vendor that specializes in gourmet food delivery called GoldBelly. It was a bit pricey ($85.00/free shipping) for 3 9x9 pepperoni pizzas, but worth every penny! It arrived in AZ still frozen w/cooking directions and sauce, in packets, on the side (presumably so the pie doesn't get soggy). I followed the cooking directions to a "T" and got the greatest deep dish, crusty edged pizza! Even my Wife the Pizza snob-bet loved it! Got one left in the freezer and going to order some more when it's gone.
google avatar

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Drove from Shelby Township to try this pizza and it was WORTH IT! Every piece is a crunchy crusty corner and the sauce is spectacularly minimal! Best pizza I've ever had!

Yelp
Had a Groupon and it's around the corner from my house so what better way to spend a Sunday than at home with my husband watching movies and eating some awesome pizza! I called the order in and the gal who took my order was great she made good suggestions and said it was a little busy so give them about 20 mins. Not a problem. When we got there I was happy to see a clean tidy waiting space with nice Italian inspired murals painted on the walls. Several folks were waiting so I knew they were swamped. No biggie I knew we were early. The young man who seemed to be the manager on staff at the time named Mike was GREAT. He made sure everyone was happy and apologized to each and every person who was waiting more than once to ensure their business was important to him. When it came to us we were the only folks left waiting and we explained we had never been before and were really looking forward to chowing down because it all smelled and looked so good. Mike before he even knew it was our first visit or we had a Groupon offered us a 2 liter of soda because we had waited so long. This guy was awesome. Its nice to see a young man working someplace and taking pride in what he does. If Mike is not a manager he should be!! We got home and the pizza is AMAZING!! HOLY COW!!! OMG!!! SO GOOD!!! Crispy and chewy crust, great cheese and the sauce is fantastic!! I know this review is more about the service than the food. The food is fantastic please order something from here and enjoy. The service was just as great!! I wonder if it's like this at all the locations!! So if you are reading this Mike or Mike's boss thank you for making our first experience with Detroit pizza great!!

Yelp

Yelp
All there deep dish pizzas I have tried are amazing. I am always in awe at the beautiful display like work of art when opening the box. Specifically the Magerhita & Tangy BBQ pizza are recommended to try.
