Where to Eat in and Around New Orleans’s City Park | Eater New Orleans

"Although most known for its annual Oktoberfest, Deutsches Haus serves German-accented food six days a week. Have a brat, with or without sauerkraut; a flammkuchen, German-style pizza with white cream sauce and sausage, and of course pretzels." - Beth D’Addono

What an interesting find while strolling around outside of City Park. This place has got a bunch of German beers on tap and in other mediums as well. I felt like a fat kid inside a candy store again. We spent a good amount of time exploring all the little artifacts they had spread throughout the place. There were a couple of rooms full of folks having a good time it seemed, perhaps locals and frequent visitors of this establishment. We ordered the Hofbräu Original and plopped our bums outside to watch the sun go down. Pure bliss.

Google
Great music and people. It's like a big Family. If you are interested on having a place to call it home, just be a member and enjoy this beautiful German community. Well, not only German, it's like NOLA, a Gumbo of amazing people, music, traditions and love.

Google
Attended Volksfest and had great time. The band was the Alpineders and they were great. Good beer and food and atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Google
Very nice establishment and location. They have a good selection of German Biers on tap. The Schnitzel had a good taste, the cucumber had a clean freash taste, but the red cabbage was very bland. The food portions are small, but the staff is very friendly. The outdoor sitting are is huge and spread out. I recommend the establishment, just be ready for small portions.

We had an awesome time with my brother and his family! The booths were manned by very friendly and helpful people. Great live music to dance to! Prost!

We decided to check out Oktoberfest at this cultural center and we had a blast. I would recommend getting there early for parking. Admission is $10 at the gate. We enjoyed the live entertainment and the chicken dancing. We also tried the HUGE pretzels and they were delicious! There is also a large tent with tables and chairs if you get tired of walking around and want to enjoy the shade. 10/10 Looking forward to coming back here for Christkindlmarket.

Google
Deutsches Haus was excellent! Bonnie and I have been wanting to join for years but never got around to it until today. It's a new, distinctive building off of Esplanade, on Bayou St. John across from City Park, a beautiful, quiet area. We had brats and beer for lunch and really enjoyed being there. Looking forward to the Christkindl Markt too!

Google
It’s like an expensive country club, but the annual membership fee is ridiculously low. Among other perks, each member receives 12 tickets to Oktoberfest worth $120 and 1 bar drink each month.

Yelp
A wonderful location to enjoy delicious German food and German beer served in a beautiful building honoring German heritage and culture. I enjoyed sitting outside enjoying a beer.

Yelp
I appreciate how this little place is big on community! We have come to enjoy their events each year. We enjoy coming here for Oktoberfest in the Fall for fun, food, dancing, etc. It is always a good time. We even went when they were temporarily moved to Kenner but we are happy that they are back locally. The ChristKindlMarkt is a wonderful winter time fest. We like to get local Christmas gifts, sweet treats, and honey. We always find something unique! You can't go wrong when parking is free and entrance is free.

Yelp
Good, basic German food. Brats and beer get my attention anytime, but Warsteiner on tap is pure magic! The setting is a contemporary German architecture along the scenic and historic Bayou St. John. This place has events such as German festivals, reunions, concerts. It is a recent manifestation supporting German culture in New Orleans. Off the beaten tourist path so you'll want to take a taxi or rideshare unless you are the adventurous sort. If you want a convivial beer with friends this is your spot. If you want a bachanalian nether you may be shown the door.

Yelp
3rd review and 3rd location for the haus... The DH new permanent home is gorgeous. What a beautiful building that is making the most of the space along Bayou St. John. The night I went (to hear an art lecture by a friend) the bar was open, credit only, but there wasn't any food. The hall where the lecture was had great acoustics and was spacious with good equipment. The bar area is bright (for a bar) and the servers were great and friendly. Love that there are chairs out front to watch the bayou and picnic tables out back to enjoy your beverage out in nature. There are a lot of various things happening on their calendar from lectures to viewing parties to trivia.

Yelp
We went for Oktoberfest and had an absolute blast!! It was Friday night weekend 2. Although it was busy we never needed to wait in a long line to get in, food or beer. Tip: Either bring your own Stein or make your first stop the Souvenir shop to buy one. Full liter refills of a yummy selection of German Beer are 15.00 - not too bad considering the quality your getting. Sausage on a stick was delicious. I also ordered Bratz and kraut but unfortunately dropped the plate before getting to taste in, I was so sad about that. Other than that great drinks, food and fun music. I can't wait to go back next year.

Yelp
Authentic German Biergarten, restaurant, social club and event center on the banks of Bayou St. John. Deutsches Haus came highly recommended by a fellow Elite Yelper, who is a member of the club. Saturday of Christkindl Markt seemed like the perfect time to check it out. Had no problem finding the beautiful facility, nestled between Bayou St. John and Saint Louis Number One Cemetery. Plenty of parking in their private lot or along the bank of the bayou. Walked into the Christkindl Markt area, met some nice vendors and patrons, and found a few gifts for ourselves and others. We then proceeded around the back of the building where a band was playing Christmas music, alongside a few food kiosks. Inside was a beautiful bar with a great selection of German beers and a few more market vendors in the main event center. We were so impressed that we picked up a membership application. This looks like the kind of organization I'd like to be a part of, if they'd have me. Prost !!!

Yelp
Tried going to October Fest last Friday 10.7.22 It was the worst---No Parking anywhere--they have really out grown that location As a result--- we left the area---not going back for that Event again Shuttling event goers would be a great option--Maybe from LSU Dentistry Event Volunteer's should not hold parking spots for other Staff, right in front of the Hause

Yelp
$20 parking for Jazz Fest. Staff was friendly and helpful. They were offering food, beer and clean restrooms inside. I will definitely remember this for future Jazz Fests. Thanks!

Yelp
I visited Deutsches Haus when my Rotary Club was looking for a new location to hold its evening meetings. From the outside in this is a gorgeous building. It definitely doesn't read bar at all it reads high end community center which I found out, it really what it is. They hold some great events here including St. Baldrick's fundraising event. Given the features, I can see why someone would want to hold an event here. The large hall and the bar area get great light. I was told in addition to the great hall there are other smaller meeting rooms. Another pro for this location is the ample parking. Unfortunately, the bar doesn't hold that many people, so if you go there just on any old day and it is busy, you may end up sitting at some not as pretty standard edition conference tables and chairs. So again mediocre bar, pretty sweet event space. Other meeting attendees were impressed in the brews available. I wasn't drinking but I did have a lovely sausage link with delish mustard. If I am ever fancy enough to need to host an event for 100 or so of my closest friends, they will be top of my list.

Yelp
I love that Deutsches Haus has returned to Orleans Parish. Tucked along Bayou St. John the new building recently opened to the public. The space is a great hall featuring a nice bar area, an outdoor area and a great parking lot in back. The friendly staff at the bar will help you learn more about their beer selections and there is a well stocked bar that includes a few wines. The night we went they had the game on in the great hall, beer was flowing (the house beer is a nice ale brewed for them by Urban South), warm pretzels, brats etc. we're also available for purchase. They will be offering language classes etc to help the public learn more about the German culture. Stop by and support this New Orleans institution.

Yelp
Genuine and laid back atmosphere. We went on a Friday night to just have a few drinks and hang out and it was nice. The German Pinot Noir is excellent.

Yelp
What's not to love about Deutches Haus! Great bar, nice people and fun events. It's easy to get to and the parking is plentiful. I show up at least once a month for trivia night. We go early and eat some terrific German food. I like the sausages but sometimes they have schnitzel! The beer selection is great and the prices are fair. Great value here.
google avatar

Miriam W.

Yelp
I go to Deutches Haus for the monthly trivia night, which is New Orleans' worst kept secret. We arrive early to partake of the dinner, which starts an hour before the trivia, and consists of well made versions of traditional German fare, which will wreak havoc on your diet. Great offerings of German beers on tap along with a full bar. The people who work here and run trivia night are the best. The newer location on Moss St. is a vast improvement over the old space, with ample parking and room for all. Good times.

Yelp
This is a neat German pub/restaurant that serves well, German items. The building is very nice and the outside seating faces a cemetery and is ample. We did not try the food. Everyone was friendly, the food being served looked great and the beer selections were generous. I tried a German wine that was FAB! My only complaint is everyone and their mom was smoking cigs right at the entrance so you faced a wall of smoke going in and out and throughout the establishment.

Yelp
I attended a home brewer's beer tasting here. I hadn't been to Deutsche Haus since it was moved from it's previous location to this new spot, so even though I knew what to expect, the experience was still pretty new. The beer tasting itself was outside in the parking lot area and inside there is a full bar and lots of tables with "family style" seating. The place got crowded fast, and when the food came out there was a pretty long line, but it moved quickly. When it was time for the food, I was delighted. They were serving three different types of sausage as well as sauerkraut, German potato salad, bread and even pretzels. All of the food was amazing! I really enjoyed my bratwurst and the other type of sausage was a spicy sausage that was fantastic. I could tell that the sauerkraut and potato salad were homemade and it was some of the best I have had. I'm happy to report that even though Deustche Haus is in a new spot, the quality hasn't changed. I am considering becoming a member because I am part German (6% is better than nothing!) and I had a good time here. As Emily said, this spot is temporary and they are planning to move, so be sure to support them in this location while you can.

Yelp
My dad joined some German culture group that meets here - because his dad was a Swiss watchmaker that designed solid gold timepieces for the 3rd Reich. We met in the middle of nowhere for a behind the scenes look at kleinpeter farms. It was "simply amazing ". WAY more interesting than Willie Wonka could have ever been...... I have seen it all in this place.

Shiva M.

Yelp
Amazing food, too notch service, can't go wrong with any of their spirits. One of my favorite restaurants in west Little Rock. They are very consistent, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
after almost a year and a half, we are back inside this delightful club for Trivia night. (Actually. my friends are there for the contest - I'm there for the food!) They should open a kitchen since there is NO German food in this area at all, and they prepare wursts as well as delish shnitzel and wonderful sides. a fun and very pleasant evening!
google avatar

Yelp
Was here Monday evening with my wife and we were totally impressed. Great selection of German beers on tap. Also they have pub food at great prices. The Bratwurst on pretzel bread was awesome. Beautiful building with lots of free off street parking. Beth was the bartender and she was great. Look forward to coming back.

Yelp
There are so many reasons why the Deutsches-Haus deserves 5 stars... They support a huge group of locals who identify as German. And, with Oktoberfest...who doesn't want a German cultural house to exist in New Orleans! That said, they aren't in New Orleans right now...but just off Airline Hwy in Metairie! This is probably the number one reason to support them. The more support they have, the sooner they'll move to to their new home by the Bayou. I miss the old house on Galvez...ah those Oktoberfests were incredible. But, their new location is gonna be SO SWEET! The recent Oktoberfests are held in Rivertown in Kenner. Definitely a great time, certainly more "family friendly". The Deutsches-Haus isn't just about Oktoberfest though. They support the growing community of homebrewers around town with classes, tastings and the wonderful Winterfest: a homebrew fest where you can eat all the foods and drink all the beers. They also have monthly trivia, movie nights, choir practice (yes, choir practice), German language classes, fundraising events, sports watchin', seminars, festivals, music nights, and it's just a nice place to chill and drink wonderful German beer. You can buy steins and other German memorabilia. It's just a wonderful place and I'm so glad it's here. And, it's only gonna get better.

Yelp
New Orleans is full of surprises--some are good, like a hidden view of a courtyard in the French Quarter; others not so good, like the pothole that appears on your drive to work. Deutsches House is definitely one of the good kind. Sitting right on the bayou, DH has a great little bar area and large event hall that seems like it'd be great for weddings or any other larger celebration that calls for a beautiful backdrop. I visited for a Midcity Rotary Club meeting and everyone grabbed pints and bites from the bar before getting down to the do-goofing business. Glad I live near here and can add it to my list of nearby watering holes!

Jordan S.

Yelp
Great place to just hang out. Can get crowded during events with just the one bar so be prepared to wait in line
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
I LOVE Deutches Haus so much I joined and became a member! I'm German on both sides of my family so it just seemed like the natural thing to do. It was a very sad loss when the old Mid-City location got "taken" by the hospital development that still isn't developing. The current temporary location of the Haus in Metairie is certainly not as much fun as the historic location BUT the new location is going to be AWESOME and is right next to the Fairgrounds. The Haus is renowned for Oktoberfest but they have MANY events and festivals throughout the year. They also run the Haus like a bar from Wed-Sat so you can just stop in for some awesome German beer. I think Deutches Haus is a fantastic organization and I highly recommend anyone that is of German ancestry, interested in German culture, or just interested in having fun check it out and consider becoming a member.

John M.

Yelp
Great beer and good people. Didn't try the food this time but looked appetizing. Will be back when it's warmer!

Yelp
Tonight is the last night for Oktoberfest at the Deutsches-Haus on Galvez Street! Hard to believe I reviewed this two years ago and that I have NOT missed a weekend of Oktoberfest in years. This year has been even bigger & better since they tore the front wall down and expanded the fest into the street. It's sad to see the old Haus go but I guess that's progress for the city to build the medical center. I think the Haus will get a grand send off tonight. Thank you Deutsches-Haus for the good times and we'll see you next year in the temporary location in Metairie and look forward to your future location! Prost!

Food C.

Yelp
This is definitely a hidden gem. It's location is away from all the touristy locations making it a peaceful hangout for locals. Everyone is really friendly and interested in starting up conversations with you. There is a lot of open space in this bar so even when business starts to pick up you can still spread out if you don't like crowds. Had a grapefruit flavored stout and a pretzel with beer cheese for $10. Will definitely return to try their other food and drink options!

Yelp
Oct 23 2010 is the last day for the Haus in this location. This is due to the construction of the LSV / VA hospital complex that will destroy the Haus. So please come and support! Enjoy the food, drink, music and fun!

Yelp
I attended for the Crescent City Homebrewers' WinterFest. I did like the location. It reminds me of an American Legion. It has a great space for large functions. And then a smaller bar area. Great parking lot.

Yelp
So I've yet to attend a Deutsches-Haus hosted event here, but have been a number of times for Stomper-related happenings. I had been to the former location and the personality of the structure isn't the same but the members make you feel like you're at home, and I believe that's what a true organization is about. There is always enough parking, the ladies bathroom is always very clean and there is a time machine in the hallway..or at least that's what I think it is. The stage area and open cafeteria like room with bar hosted our 610 Stompers Award Ceremony and it was perfect for the large organization we've grown to become allowing for elaborate dance number introductions, a scooter-riding mandog, and a decent amount of awkward space between the vets and the newbies. The bartender, who I'm not sure what his name is, makes a GREAT Bloody Mary. He must know I despise olives and love it spicy 'cause it's perfect every time. They also have a bar behind the bar that I like to call, "The Cool People Bar" where secret meetings must be held after the person who takes the minutes leaves. The Deutsches-Haus has been extremely gracious to the 610 Stompers in allowing them to host inner-member activities there despite the massive amounts of sweat our members exude that somehow don't cause that huge room to smell...at all. (They must have sweat ventilators like smoke eaters or something). I hope to be able to make one of their events in the near future to add to my review. I'm honing my wiener dogs for the next time they host races. Oscar Mayer is ready to be named the next reigning champ of Wiener Stampedes.

Yelp
Sooooo I guess it sucks that I have to give DH a mere 3 starts, but there is a reason to my madness. I checked out Oktoberfest last weekend with a couple of friends and quite honestly had a really good time. The band was hilarious, the food was delicious and the beer flowed steadily. So why a 3 you ask... well, there's a couple of reasons. I guess I should start by saying that as a grad student, I am very stingy with my money (because I have very little of it) so an entrance fee always makes me a bit cranky. Now I understand, its a festival and yada yada, but its not like their food and beer is free.... quite pricey as a matter of fact so this kinda threw me off a bit... and as if asking for it, they overcharged my tab. This was mea culpa for not double checking my bill, but when I did the math the next morning they had charged like 2 beers and a shot extra. I had to go back and deal with all the troubles. So all and all, its a really good time, just be ready to leave a good chunk of your paycheck and double check your tab before you sign it. Ps= it really doesn't hurt that the main bartender, Greg, is probably one of the sexiest things I've seen in a while...*swoon*

Yelp
Germans in New Orleans? Really? Really! Get your lederhosen on and dust off that stein that your great grandpa gave you and head down to this historic German cultural enclave. There is a wonderful outside seating/dancing area as well as indoors suitable for large groups. Food is authentic and this is the only place I know of with a great German beer selection (Warsteiner, several paulner brews, and much more) Oktoberfest is my favorite time to come down but there are also a variety of other things going on through out the year. Additionally, there is some fear that this place may get torn down to make way for a new medical center so get there soon especially now while Oktoberfest is in full swing and the Oom-pahs are going strong! Prost! P.S. They sell the infamous glass boots here..
google avatar

Dennis G.

Yelp
Deutsche-Haus has long been the meeting place of the Crescent City Homebrewers, and that's how I tend to visit. Oktoberfest is super fun, but I'm here once a month to use the venue for a meeting with other homebrewers. As a meeting venue it's rather nice. There's a large room/small auditorium with a full bar and several side rooms, so they can accommodate groups of many sizes. The current (temporary) location is nice. I like it, but then again it's not even ten minutes from my house. When the festivals start up in the fall it's going to be a blast.

Meghan A.

Yelp
Love the new location! Situated on Bayou St. John with a lovely view of City Park. Perfect place to enjoy a beautiful spring evening. Add a cold German beer, a sunset and good company and you're sure to have a delightful evening!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Went for the Oktoberfest celebration on 9/28/07. Had a wonderful time and some really good German beer. The Warsteiner is a pleasant reminder of the few years that I spent living in Germany. The dinner plate was an excellent deal for just $10! I had a pork loin, a brat, some german potato salad as well as some mashed potatoes with the good mushroom gravy. Such a wonderful meal surrounded by people having a great time. The Haus has been in it's present location since 1928. Currently. there are plans for the LSU Hospital. Those plans call for demolishing the Haus. Please take a few minutes to let your friends, family, public officials...anyone know that the Haus is being threatened and needs to stay where it is!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Great selection of German Beers without having to wait for next year's Octoberfest. Many activities and dinners . Friendy people always make you welcome German movie night and brats is a great time with subtitles. They have fundraisers for veterans and kids with cancer.
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
I mainly know the Haus as a venue for other groups' events. It has played host to things like Danny O'Flaherty playing concerts and NOWFF showing bad movies. I just find its primary focus to be a tad bit creepy. It's probably not helped that the first time I went there for a NOWFF event at the old location, there were folks upstairs singing "Die Wacht am Rhein".
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
How can one not enjoy the annual oktoberfest. Make sure to bring your largest beer drinking vessel.

Nick C.

Yelp
Get deutsch-faced at the Octoberfest. Six dollars gets you in the door, over a dozen top-notch german beers ($9 for a take-home stein w/ $5 refills, $18 pitchers) and food service in the back ($12 for a dinner-plate: entree, sausage, vegetable, starch) I had a cabbage roll, fat German sausage, black rye bread, warm potato salad and red cabbage. All was good. There was live music, profoundly drunk men wearing lederhosen and gyrating to the chicken dance, and plenty of German chocolate cake.

Nathalie R.

Yelp
Love this place. Great food yummy yummy Service could improve depending on wator/waitresses.
