The Best Upcoming Chicago Bars and Restaurants to Know | Eater Chicago

"A well-regarded Chicago sausage spot is opening its first suburban location this summer with a menu of signature items and chef collaborations, including an Iceland Dawg created with Matthias Merges (sweet dijon, ketchup, remoulade, onion) and a classic fried chicken sandwich developed with Andrew Brochu." - Naomi Waxman

Google
Best spot for hotdogs! Try the “it’s not a corn dog” with cheese fries. The Italian beef was really flavorful!

Google
Singlehandedly the #1 happy hour in Evanston. Period. 50% off beers and seltzers? And they've got some good craft, including Sketchbook. Very affordable dogs, fresh chicken tenders and burgers. We came at 4pm and were worried that things wouldn't come fresh and they did. Everything was hot and delicious. Just wish the fries were double-fried or fried at a higher temp. They were too soggy. Service friendly and fast. Tables and establishment are clean.

Google
I am obsessed with Devil Dawgs and come regularly. Orders are placed on touchscreens in the restaurant (or order on your phone before you come and your food will be ready and waiting!) which makes it super easy to customize your order precisely to the toppings you would like. Every time, I order the fully loaded vegan Chicago dog which comes with sport peppers, pickle spear, green relish, onions, mustard, tomato, and celery salt. It's a flavor explosion! They currently have a daily happy hour special which gets me my Chicago dog for just $4! Also, don't miss their French fries. They are perfection! There is plenty of seating indoors and some outdoor seating too and we love the fun decor of the place.

Google
Best Chicago dog I’ve had so far on my quest to find my #1. I even think this location was better than their other shop. Everything was SO fresh. Dog was hot, veggies cold. Fries were a perfect mix of soft and crispy, with an expert touch of Cajun seasoning. Truly fabulous.

Google
Honestly one of Chicago's better institutions when it comes to hot dogs. Devil Dawgs in Evanston does not disappoint. The food is what you expect but however the consistency is amazing. Staff really care about what they're doing and honestly just great friendly environment.

Google
Just visited Devil Dawgs newest shop in Evanston and we had an absolute blast. Awesome energy, great music, and a vibrant space with a street art vibe. The place was buzzing and busy but our wait was quick and food came out fast and hot. Super friendly, attentive staff and it’s very clean both inside and out. We wanted to try the entire menu but “settled” on two dogs (Chicago and a coney), two sliders (Elvis?!?!), chicken fingers, cheese fries and a peanut butter banana milkshake! Oh yeah, they also have beer from local breweries like 3 Floyds and Revolution. Zombie Dust tallboys, anyone? Really welcome addition to the block and we’ll be back ASAP to try the rest of the menu!

Google
Nothing great. Overpriced food that's mediocre. Never again. My food got cold fast, I should of went to Chili's down the street. I had their buttermilk chicken strips meal. It was not what I expected, could of been better. Oh well! In order for me to post this review it has to be 3 stars. Lol! What's the sense of giving your opinion if you can't post what you want?

Google
This was an awesome happy hour hot dog. The large selection of beers at half price was very nice also. Great seating indoors and out. Can accommodate large groups and small. Ditch the grind twenty minutes early and pack this place.

Yelp
For my one visit here I'm going with 5 stars for the food and the friendly service. My jumbo dog was grilled hot and loaded with the Chicago style fixings, and was very tasty. I also tried the grilled sliders and the Maxwell st. polish. The sliders were three for $10 which I thought was a fair price plus they had great flavor. As far as the Maxwell polish its hard to beat Jim's in the city but was a strong effort. Parking in downtown Evanston can be a challenge and you'll have to pay as well.

Yelp
Pretty close to the bone, Chicago style. Could use a few more fries with the hot dog. Regular hot dog buns ( no sesame seeds) Excellent pricing.

Yelp
Based on the entry of this place, I didn't have high hopes. There were a ton of people and not really much of a sign to tell how to order. Ideally, they want you to use the touch screen, but I did it in person. Even with this rough start, I was impressed with what I got. I went with the Icelandic Dog which sounded really good. Based on the crowds, I was expecting this dog to come out a mess and soggy. I was also concerned on the price. Once I unwrapped it, the dog was perfectly and beautifully topped with all the included toppings. It almost looked like a TV commercial ready dog. There were the perfect amount of toppings as well. Not too much and not too little. I also went with a bag of fries. Maybe I caught them at a good time because they were hot, crispy, and quite a few in the bag. Fresh cut fries is a dying art. Glad they kept it up. They are also known for their giant shakes and let me tell you, they are giant. They are also super tasty so I will be enjoying this treat for the rest of the afternoon. I went with the caramel pretzel shake. YES The place looks clean and the service seems nice enough. While they flipped my first impression, I hope they make it a little more clear on how to order. Also, with all the disorganized madness, they were able to get a quality hot dog, fries, and a shake to me in under 10 minutes which makes me think that they could probably already top my 5 star expectations. I will gladly be back. Its a smidgen expensive, but the quality and quantity greatly makes up for any increase!

Yelp
Very good food fresh came out to me hot and tasted good added extra peppers love the spicy mustard sauce quick service will come again not crowded ate the happy hour vegan dogs it tastes just like hot dogs bringing friends next time I come 4 pm to 6 pm great time dinner

Yelp
Tried their Chicago dawg for the first time. It was a solid hot dog with all the Chicago toppings. I did ask for no sports peppers but found them in my hot dog. No harm done I was able to just pick them right off since I don't like them. Appreciated the man at the register for telling me happy hour was happening so I got their hot dog and fries for only $4. That type of service in my book goes a long way to save a few bucks. I'd come here again for their happy hour deals.

Yelp
Came here for the veggie dogs and wasn't really impressed. The service was fast enough, although the employees seemed really stressed which, to me, is more reflective of the ownership and working conditions than it is of the personalities of the staff. The dogs were just okay, I can't really explain it other than it seemed like low quality ingredients, but the onion rings were terrible...not sure what kind of batter they use but it's wrong and just falls off the onions. They were way too greasy. But the price is right for the hotdogs, at least. The atmosphere feels very "corporate attempting to be casual", and there was a tv with a stream of videos featuring people having accidents or getting hurt which felt fitting for the overall experience.

Yelp
This place is absolutely fire they have the best Chicago dog their french fries are to die for and if you can fit it in your appetite you have to try their sliders absolutely off the hook

Yelp
I love the location in south loop but this one is WEAK. WHY? Well... When I pay $8 for a damn hot dog I want there to be plenty of toppings on it to make that $8 hot dog worth $8. I am a long term fan of the south loop location. This was my first time visiting the Evanston store. I got my regular order which is the "it's not a corn dawg" - I am very disappointed. Opened it up to find a hot dog with a few sprinkles of cheese and a few kernels of corn on top. Stop cutting corners and make your food worth the cost.

Sue S.

Yelp
Sam set us up with our Chicago Hotdog order. Gave a full demo in the putting together of the dogs. Very personal service and very friendly. I would definitely come back here when in town.‍

Yelp
These people are really devils. I asked the size and he said it would be the size of a BIG MAC!! This man, this place, this environment is a whole entire lie. $13, THIRTEEN DOLLARS?!?! For burgers the size of an infants hand. Nice try I will never be eating here again!
google avatar

Bradley P.

Yelp
I don't eat hot dogs, but love me a good fried chicken sandwich- and the Devil Dawgs chicken sandwich was amazing. Hand breaded, high quality white meat chicken breast, great bun, shredded lettuce - it rocked. For $10 + $3.95 for a bucket of hand cut fries that is enough for 2=you'll be smiling. And I don't often give high marks unless the price/quality is on point.

Yelp
This is the largest location in the Chicago area and the first one outside of Chicago. The staff and service is excellent.

Jack S.

Yelp
Devil Dawgs catered our Northwestern University undergraduate film set and the service was incredible. Thank you to Anthony Montgomery for your correspondence and Devil Dawgs for the incredible food! Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for an authentic Chicago dog or burger.

Yelp
I normally dont write reviews but this time warrants a 1 star reviews where I feel its necessary to lay into you because the quality of your food is bad and most importantly I dont like your thoughtless condescending responses to your customer complaints. I ordered the chicken strips and fries. I thought nothing of it as its usually a safe choice. how could you possibly get a bad review for chicken strips? it is the most simple item to whip up. Get my food and immediately go for the fries and they are cold. not only are they cold, they taste like theyve been sitting all day. Not to mention, the fries werent salted or seasoned at all. The chicken strips were egregious as well. They were cold, soft and soggy as if they were sitting out all day. you obviously dont make your food fresh because it tasted microwaved. I couldve bought a lean cuisine dino nuggets microwavable meal for 4.99 and it wouldve been the same quality as this sorry excuse you call food that I paid 20 dollars for. Devil Dawgs is one of the worst experiences i've had in a long time. congrats for winning the losers of the day award. I wouldnt be going this hard if it wasnt for the gm's lack luster responses to her customers complaints. But her responses reflect the quality of the product that they put out. yall have the audacity to price gauge customers AND put out a terrible product ? not on my watch. your skills are questionable and it always baffles me that incompetent people are in high positions. Based off of your replies youre disrespectful and show contempt to your customers. you brushing off everyones constructive criticism with short condescending replies and not fixing the issue, as if customers are inconsequential is a mistake. do you not understand the product you put out reflects your bottom line? if I order from you again, not see any changes and if I see anymore condescending responses to customer complaints, ill just reach out to the owner (JC) and complain to him. because once again people dont want to be priced gauged, compounded on top of buying a bad product. customers want solutions and for you to improve. Not "im sorry you feel that way"

Yelp
Thrilled that Devil Dawgs has come to Evanston. My destination for a Chicago style veggie dog! REALLY disappointed that the fries are cooked in beef fat. Was told that today after eating them multiple times and them knowing I'm a vegan. Staff is great! Wish they had told me sooner! Why fry in beef fat and not tell people? Post it on the menu?

Yelp
The staff was friendly it was my first time there and didn't notice the self order screen walked right past it got to the counter and looking at the posted menu that kept blinking out and the guy was so sweet instead of directing me to the order screen he recited the menu and allowed me to order .. very good business vibes as I left I noticed the order screen and appreciated his kindness. The burger is absolutely amazing soooo delicious and made fresh I ordered the double patty slider with pickles tomato and lettuce. Soooo freaking good. They also serve alcohol and have an awesome outdoor space. I will be back for sure. Thanks for being so thoughtful and polite!!!!

Yelp
You can swap a vegan dawg in for some menu options and they also of course feature a classic chicago vegan dawg, which I appreciate because it's such a rarity and I miss em from my childhood. I haven't tried the veggieburger yet but I aim to do that soon. Don't miss the fun selection of beers!

Yelp
Novelty of trying unique toppings on hot dogs. Once that wears out, they're just overpriced hot dogs. Onion rings are made to order and definitely worth it.

Debbie S.

Yelp
Service was good and ambiance decent. Was really looking forward to DDs opening in Evanston. However, I was very disappointed in the food we carried out today. Had Chicago hot dogs. The buns were hard on the bottom (slightly stale and definitely not steamed) and didn't have poppy seeds like traditional Chicago dogs. The dog itself was good. The fries seemed like they were warmed over. They were soggy. They've been open for only about a week, so I won't give up on them yet. I'll return with an update some time in the future!

Yelp
Ordered two chili Devil Dogs, straight TRASH. The manager claimed the Chili dogs were spicy (NOT) it was a very poor quality chili dog, couldn't even tell it was chili, it was spreed on the bun like it was butter. Very bad. And the fries were undercooked, and the place wasn't even busy, I was the only one there. If you can't get a simple order like this right, GOOD LUCK. 1 out of 10 I give it a -1 I shouldn't taken photos. Won't be back.

John Bonnie O.

Yelp
Can you call and t a "Chicago Dog" without a poppy seed bun? Ordered a Chicago Dog today which was fine, although I was disappointed that they don't use poppy seed rolls. Maybe they aren't available in Evanston.

Manisha M.

Yelp
Food is always hot and fresh! Fries are almost made to order. Sliders are great and the best cheese curds around. Great happy hour deals and food is always ready quickly from nice staff :)

Booster M.

Yelp
Love the ambiance; decent burger; avoid hotdog: tasted cheap and overly-salted like the fries
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
this is my absolute favorite place to get a vegan dog chicago style! it's reliably tasty and very filling, especially when paired with the tots. my only hope is that one day they can get a vegan shake on the menu too.

Vasia A.

Yelp
Nasty service very rude don't take cash louzy food long wait over priced communist owned buisness

Kk P.

Yelp
Hot dogs were good....chicken tenders are delicious and the fries were great. Love the ranch! A bit pricey, but what isn't these days!

Connie K.

Yelp
I ordered a Chicago Dog and ate it there. The hot dog was barely warm and was a little water logged. The toppings were good, but I've had better tasting dogs so was disappointed. Also when I ordered from an actual person, they did not let me know there was a happy hour special where I could have gotten a Chicago Dog with fries for less money :( I'll probably give this place one more try to see if the hot dog is better next time and try the fries (if they are crisp) and the onion rings. I'll post again next time.

tricia l.

Yelp
Have been there two times. That's enough. Went today w 3 friends. We all agreed we won't be repeat customers. The malt was good!! But the rest was not worth it. Really bad onion rings. Just ok hot dogs. Tater tots meh. Spent $50. So. Nope.

Unsound F.

Yelp
They don't take cash and the food at THAT price you might aswell make it at home. Only good thing they have going is the milkshake and even then I would still say save your money for eating anywhere else.
