Dhanteraz Indian Fusion - Review - Roscoe Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This Indian spot in Roscoe Village has so many options, its menu is prime material for the next World Memory Championship. Many dishes are tasty, like the flaky samosas, creamy palak paneer, and spicy chicken chettinad. But the signature biryani is a must-order. Served in a hot clay pot draped in golden brown dough, it’s exciting to break into and even more exciting once you’re eating spoonfuls of fragrant saffron rice, caramelized onions, and tender chicken, lamb, or shrimp (they also have a vegetable option). Despite the small space, large groups are common at Dhanteraz, so even if a catchup with some friends ends up including their partners, siblings, and a surprise cameo from the current world memory champion, you should be fine." - John Ringor

We had a large party, 13 people everyone really enjoyed the food and service. Our waitress was attentive and have good recommendations. Dhanteraz’s Biryani Lamb was sooo good, for the longest time I thought we could get this version in India where a dough cover the claypot while it cooked. We loved the chicken 65 & pakora appetizers. Bhindi/okra was very good too. For desserts highly recommend the jackfruit ice-cream, coconut tres leches & mango tres leches BYOB was a big plus. Highly recommend Dhanteraz if you want Indian food

Google
I've both dined in and ordered takeout from Dhanteraz, and the quality has been consistently excellent. The food is always fresh and flavorful, staff is friendly and attentive. I had a favorite Indian restaurant but I just found my new one. Highly recommend!

Google
The place, food and ambiance was excellent. The attention to detail shows up so well right from the chef to everyone. The food was delicious and so different - not the same old you taste everywhere Indian. Our server was so knowledgeable and her recommendations were right on spot. If you want to taste Indian food again for it's flavor, freshness and love then come here!!

Google
We were searching for an Indian fusion restaurant in Chicago and this place showed up 🔝 on top of the list. After dining here I realized why this place is rated so high. Dhanteraz Indian Fusion location is right in the residential neighborhood where there are several boutique businesses. Street parking might be difficult to find on a busy day. Restaurant ambience is trendy and gives us the vibe of cozy hangout place for nearby residents. The service was top notch and the waitress gave us suggestions about menu choices and prepared us well about the spice level. My favorite dishes are the Chili 🌶️ Paneer, Chili 🌶️ Gobi, Lamb 🐑 Rogan Ghosh, Pakoda. I felt the Chef 🧑‍🍳 has mastered these dish’s recipes and gave his signature touch. We also tried Chicken Tikka Masala Pasta 🍝, Chicken Chettinad, Veg Biryani, Malai Kofta, Garlic Naan, jackfruit ice cream 🍨, cake which were ok. Entrees portions are a little smaller when compared to other restaurants. I wish there were more fusion menu options and/or authentic Indian regional cuisine menu options. Chef 🧑‍🍳 Abu took time to check on us and inquired about the food taste and service. I would recommend this place to anyone who would like to try Indian food.

Google
This place is amazing! We have been for date nights and with larger groups as well, and each time we have had incredible service and food. Everything always tastes amazing, and I am a huge fan of their Dhanteraz Biryani dishes. Our waitress makes great suggestions and is very helpful when it comes to spice levels. BYOB is also a huge plus. Highly recommend this place.

Google
Our experience was excellent. The service was top notch and very professional. Sweetest wait staff ever. The atmosphere is adequately lit for a nice dinner experience. The person waiting our table gave nice recommendations and we loved the food for the most part. I ordered a paneer curry and wish it had some more flavor to it. The only Indian restaurant, in my experience, that offers riced cauliflower for carb conscious folks!

Google
Excellent service. All the workers were nice and attentive. The food was very flavorful, and the spice levels we ordered were accurate with every dish. The lamb bhiryani was the star, very well seasoned. Would easily come back to try more!

Google
We found Dhanteraz very last minute and wow, what a find! Great combination of delicious food, cute ambiance, and friendly service. First time trying Chicken Korma and it did not disappoint. Tikka Masala was also excellent. The naan was piping hot and wonderfully flaky. Roscoe Village is lucky to have this place!

Yelp
so happy to have this in our neighborhood... warm service and great portions. the ambiance could be helped a bit - particularly bc it's family owned (would like to see this reflected in the place). great flavors in everything we ordered. unclear where the "fusion" comes into play but it's great either way!
google avatar

Yelp
So tasty! Friendly, attentive staff. Had butter chicken and tikka masala, both delicious. You get to pick your spice levels. Had the special chocolate cake to go. Not an inexpensive meal but great for a change of pace meal.

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had! Our whole experience at Dhanteraz was amazing as soon as we walked in. We felt very welcomed and comfortable with the friendly staff. The atmosphere is really fun and interesting, yet sophisticated enough for date night. The herb rice is extraordinarily flavorful and a must order if you like your rice turned up a notch. The chicken chettinad was easily the best chettinad I've ever had. They curated a perfect spice level to meet my spice preferences (spicy) and I was left in awe with its complex flavor. My wife loved the butter chicken and was thoroughly impressed with how creamy and flavorful it was. We also ordered the garlic naan which exceeded all of our expectations. It was the perfect contrast of crispy bottom with airy/flavorful top. The naan paired excellently with our main entrees and is a must order. The mango Lassi was super refreshing and had us wishing we ordered another! Finally, the coconut milk cake rounded out our experience with a lovely, light, and refreshing sweet treat. Dhanteraz will be our goto Indian restaurant for the foreseeable future. Chef Anaz has clearly spent an incredible amount of time curating an extensive menu that excels at delivering the most fresh, flavorful, Indian cuisine in Chicago. Highly recommend for any occasion!

Yelp
Thrilled to have Dhanteraz in the neighborhood! We have been longtime fans of Basant Modern Indian a little north, and remain impressed by their food, drinks, and ambience. However, Dhanteraz may have replaced it in terms of quick, quality, reliable takeout, with better hours and far fairer prices. The sauces are excellent - you can tell how fresh their ingredients are and how expertly they balance flavors. I am a huge fan of the saag, both chicken and paneer - just delicious and wonderful over a bed of fluffy rice. We've done takeout three times already - it's a new go to. Looking forward to trying more and more in the future, as well as dining in!

Yelp
What a great entry to the Roscoe Village neighborhood. My wife and I love the food, service, and inviting atmosphere here. We haven't had a bad thing, but highlights on the menu are the Gobi Manchurian, Chili Mushroom, Samosas, Chicken Madras, and Dhanteraz Biryani. Our toddler also can't get enough of the Tikka Masala pasta. They offer some of the best Indian food in the city and are BYOB. The servers and chef are also incredibly sweet. It is certainly worth a visit if you're in the area or looking for a great takeout option. We can't wait to be back!

Yelp
5/5 on all accounts. Amazing Indian food, great price point, awesome staff. We will be retuning. We ordered the Gobi Manchurian, Crispy cauliflower florets tossed in a tangy Indo-Chinese sauce, to start with and this hit the spot. Please order this! Then we ordered the lamb saag and lamb Kadai, and both were great! The lamb Kadai, lamb cooked with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes & spices like clove and cardamom, had so much flavor my husband considered ordering one to go for his lunch the following day. Pravalika, our waitress, was super accommodating to questions about spice levels. Overall, great place, great food, great price point. We loved the experience.

Yelp
Food was great, we got the lamb saag and butter chicken for 2 of us and had a little bit of leftovers for the next day that was still delicious. You can customize spice (we did medium and it was not very spicy so keep that in mind). Entrees come with complimentary basmati rice and it's BYOB which is great. Service was very nice. Recommend making a reservation as the restaurant is small and most tables are reserved. Will definitely be back to try more dishes - and the cake we keep hearing about!

Yelp
Just went back here tonight and I have to say this bright star shined even more. We like to go with their thoughtful suggestions, and try something different based on what we had before. The coolest part is the waitress (can't spell her name but she's great) remembers what she selected for you last time, so your adventure always continues! The rub in this perfect meal is the chef came out to speak with us and what I love about his food. I hate writing this because I want it to myself, but that's not fair.

Yelp
Family run, great service , delicious Indian food, fairly priced. What a fantastic addition to the Roscoe village neighborhood. Can't wait to return.

Melani O.

Yelp
Food was really good! We didn't have super high expectations and were just going to have a low effort dinner nearby. We were happily surprised by how good all the food was. Their spice levels were on point, they can definitely give you spicy so come here if you find other Indian places not spicy enough!
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
really delicious food. everyone here was so nice; excellent recommendations were given. we thoroughly enjoyed every single dish we tried, and we tried a lot! rice dishes are very generous, meat dishes less so, vegetarian somewhere in the middle. appetizers (at least the incredible cauliflower we had) are large. naan was incredible! byob!
google avatar

Yelp
My partner and I Found this restaurant by chance and boy were we lucky. Amazing food every time as well as great service! Abu is such a great chef and you can tell he truly cares about his craft. If you do decide to give it a try order the Lamb Curry 10/10!

Yelp
This is such a good addition to the neighborhood! Ever since going to Dishoom in London, I have been searching for tasty Indian food. We found Rooh in the west loop, but there are things here I like even more! I love the variety of options, and the servers are so knowledgeable and seem to really love the food. It's really decently priced so you can try many things. The portions are good sized! We went in person, and I actually love that it's BYOB. A lot of places have overpriced wine, so it's nice to bring whatever you want. The vibe inside is nice, but it's small so make a reservation. We've ordered takeout and it was just as fresh. I personally love the butter paneer and daal!

Yelp
This place is excellent!! I've been to alot of Indian restaurants and this some of the best food I have had. Their signature Dhanteraz sauce is some of the best. The Korma is also really good. They have a spicy garlic naan which is both spicy and loaded with tons of flavor. We also got their lamb biryani which was super flavorful and the portion was large. I also asked for some spicy sauce on the side and it was super yummy. Love this place and can't wait to try more of this.

Yelp
Stopped by lunchtime for a quick bite to eat. We ordered the Gobi Manchurian(V) cauliflower appetizer, Onion naan, Samosas, and I tried a Salt Lassi. Everything was delicious, fresh, and not too spicey. I will definitely, return for a full dinner with my husband.

Loren V.

Yelp
My favorite Indian place!!! Took my mother-in-law and she loved it so much, first time trying Indian food.
google avatar

Yelp
So glad this just opened in the neighborhood. Some of the best Indian we've had, nice ambiance, great staff. Unexpectedly perfect all around given they just opened.

Yelp
I am so glad for this spot to open up in my neighborhood. Great flavor, great service and very welcoming atmosphere. We had paneer tikka masala, chicken 65, dhanterz kofta and roti. Everything was delicious. Host was very friendly and recommended great options. Can't wait to try more options here.

Yelp
... what can I say, my husband and I are so happy about this new Indian restaurant in Roscoe, we had the opportunity to dine in tonight there, the service is fantastic, the staffs all of them they are very dedicated and friendly. The Chef, my respect !!! Beside he cooks with the heart and he is involve not just in the kitchen, he makes sure people enjoy the amazing food, taking care of details around the restaurant. He is such a warm humble person. The presentation of the dishes and portions are delightful.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Food on point. Service on point. Will be back soon! Got the tikka misala, garlic naan, and lamb bryanni.

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! First time eating here tonight. Made reservations for Friday night & that was a good thing, the place is fairly small. Wide selection on menu. Staff was very friendly & service was great. We had Samosas, spicy Paneer, eggplant & naan. BYOB. Our new favorite Indian restaurant! We will be back!!
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the leftovers? Best tandoori chicken I've had ever and probably the best sag Hoth vegetarian and with chicken - we love sag lol). Service was very good. People were friendly and it was quite comfortable inside. Go and enjoy!
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Sadly, this new addition to Roscoe is nothing to write home about. Decent food. But the carry out portions for $16 and $18 should be more than these small quart size containers, including minimal chicken. Should increase the portions for take out, or decrease your prices accordingly. Hopefully, the dine-in portions are more substantial. I will give that a try. At this rate, I don't see this restaurant lasting very long, which is too bad since RV could really use an anchor Indian restaurant.
google avatar

Swapnil C.

Yelp
Mediocre food. There are better options. Gobi Manchurian was sweet which is not a typical flavor profile. Veg. Tikka Masala was Meh, undercooked vegetables.

Kristine H.

Yelp
Great naan. Warm and friendly service. Butter chicken sauce is so flavorful. I love having this in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Sydney F.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our first time here! The garlic naan, vegetable biyani, and butter chicken will keep us coming back! I am excited to try more of the menu! The staff was also working so hard for a busy Saturday night! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Fantastic neighborhood Indian spot. Some creative menu items and delicious specials. Very good and friendly service. Our new favorite local spot, can't wait to be back!

Yelp
The food here is so good! I highly recommended the Chicken Tikka Masala. The service is great. Very friendly and lovely ambiance.

Yelp
Another massively disappointing restaurant on Roscoe. The whole atmosphere is shabby, doesn't feel like a months-old restaurant, more like 20 years. Service is abysmal. Slow, not attentive. Took 5 minutes to get a menu. Never got water refilled. Never asked how the food was. Took forever to get the bill. Food took 45 minutes which just killed my appetite. The food was ok but not good enough to save the meal or make me come again. Chicken manchurian was chewy and a bad version. Briyani rice had a great flavor, but the lamb was so chewy couldn't eat it. Decent pita bread. Massive fail overall.

Mo P.

Yelp
Last night was the first night we ate in the restaurant, but we've had takeout a couple of times before. The woman who waited on us was incredibly nice and attentive. She made some great recommendations like the fried cauliflower and a chicken dish that I can't remember the name of now but anyway everything we ordered was fabulous. We went with another couple and they said the same thing. We are so happy that an authentic Indian restaurant has come to the area. So tasty!!
google avatar

Kenneth S.

Yelp
Food was great, and service was incredible! The butter naan was amazing. It is BYOB, so great to bring a bottle of wine for a night out.
google avatar

Sachin G.

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance were exceptional and we are excited to head back. We live in Lakeview and have tried most of the options in the city. Everything was extremely fresh, flavorful, and not greasy. You can tell they believe in quality.

Ok P.

Yelp
We visited on a Wed. evening. The food was delicious and the guidance from our server to try some of the house specialties was appreciated and spot-on! We had Chicken Tikka Masala (+ spinach), Lamb Veggie Spinach and Chicken Chettinad. All the meat was perfectly cooked and tender and the flavors were excellent! They were out of a couple of things we wished to try, but overall we had a lovely meal/experience. The chef came out to say hello. Always a nice touch. We each said we'd be back!

Sam H.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! The Best garlic naan I've had in a very long time. Very welcoming with outdoor seating. Highly recommend

Chris Y.

Yelp
So good! We had the Gobi Manchurian appetizer, which is crispy cauliflower and a really delicious sweet spicy sauce. We ordered four different entrées and sort of shared everything. Every single thing was delicious. Can't wait to go back.

Eshwar S.

Yelp
Excellent authentic Indian food and friendly service. Biriyani was very well done with good flavors. The naans and samosas were very tasty and the entrees were prepared with care. A must try if you're into high quality authentic Indian food.

Eliza R.

Yelp
Dhanteraz is an amazing addition to the Roscoe Village neighborhood! Delicious food that is clearly made with skill and love. Great gluten free options. The owners are lovely. We'll be back!

Ankur G.

Yelp
My brother and I tried this place for dinner. The ambience, service, and food were all excellent! The quality of the food was very high. Will definitely be returning!

Olly R.

Yelp
I cannot recommend Dhanteraz enough! Excellent food, excellent service. Tons of gluten free (and celiac safe) options! We had the Dhanteraz Shrimp, Saffron Rice, Lamb Biryani, Garlic Naan, and Butter Chicken, and everything was absolutely delicious (and everything was gluten free expect the naan). Honestly just perfect. This is easily some of the best Indian food in Chicago.

Steve S.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, not greasy...and everything very tasty. Incredibly nice staff as well.

Emily H.

Yelp
Incredible authentic Indian food with great, friendly service. I highly recommend the Dhanteri Biryani. I'll be back often.

Lindsay C.

Yelp
My fiancé and I had a wonderful meal tonight thanks to the suggestions by our waitress. She was attentive and let us know that it was BYOB. We were given complimentary cake as they were celebrating a family members birthday tonight. We immediately felt this restaurant could not have been more conveniently located because of their friendly atmosphere. Will definitely be back again to dine soon!

Jerry C.

Yelp
We have been to Dhanteraz twice for dinner and both times the food was exceptional. The service was friendly and prompt as well. The food was fresh and there were large chunks of chicken in the dishes with meat. Our favorite dishes were the Samosas, Chana Masala, Chicken Korma and the Dhanteraz House Cake (tres leches with Coconut on top). The Vegetable Tikka Masala was good, but we think we would like the sauce more on chicken. Of note, the sauce was more tomatoey than I've had elsewhere. The Dhanteraz Chicken is similar to Chicken Korma but a little sweet so I couldn't eat more than a small serving at a meal. Looking forward to checking out the Butter Chicken, Aloo Gobi, Tandoori Chicken and Vermicelli Kheer when we return.

Subodh L.

Yelp
Was excited that an Indian restaurant was opening in RV and was hoping to have good Indian food in the neighbourhood. Went there with the kids and everyone in the group loved the food. We ordered some zero spice paneer and dal makhani for the kids, all the kids ate without any fuss. For us we ordered chicken tikka, chicken kadai and Dhanreraz Chicken biryani (our server suggested we get this). The chicken tikka was so soft and flavourful, melt in the mouth chicken paired with the green chutney was on point. The chicken kadai was different but had a lot of flavor so 10/10 for that and they also got the crispy garlic naan correct. The chicken biryani stole the show, the presentation was great and the flavors were amazing. It was not spicy but a medley of flavors in the mouth. My wife was coming back from a girls dinner and she had a second dinner just for the biryani. Looking forward to trying out other things on the menu soon, hopefully have finally found a go-to Indian restaurant.
