The 9 Best Places to Find Hawai‘i Food in the Bay Area

"Chad and Monica Kaneshiro previously owned Hawaiian restaurant Morning Wood — which subsequently closed in 2023 — and now they run Diamond Head General Store, a casual Hawaiian restaurant and marketplace for Hawaiian and Japanese groceries. Spam musubis and futomaki are ready to go at the counter, but there are also heartier plates to order. Try the loco moco, which offers a choice of beef patty, kalua pork, or mochiko chicken, or get an order of the garlic shrimp which comes with a scoop of very necessary mac salad." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

Google
Super cute place, loved entering and hearing traditional Hawaiian music. My only suggestion cus I want them to stick around would be to cut portions and prices. Poke bowl was $27! Before tip. Unheard of! Could make the bowl and many other items half the size and half the price. Much aloha

What once use to be morning wood is now a two for one. Welcome to Diamond Head General Store where you step into a glimpse of Hawaii for Atleast 20min. The entrees are hefty so come hungry or come ready to have leftovers. They amount of food they give you compared to other restaurants in the same group is unmatched. The menu ranges from original dishes like kalua pork, loco moco, spam Musubi, bbq chicken. They also have chef special dishes like the crispy Chilli chicken that will blow your mind. This place gets it rite every time. Crispy Chilli Chicken: sweet and crunchy very juicy pcs of chicken. Two scoops of Mac salad and a scoop of white rice. Sour candy: in house made sour watermelon strips. Mahi Mahi:two large pcs of fruikake panko crusted fish on a bed of cabbage with two scoops of rice and one scoop of Mac salad.

I read reviews about Diamond Head General Store when it first opened and finally made it over there December 29, 2023. If you love Hawaiian breakfast or lunch, this is the place to eat. I had the Loco Moco with chicken and the portion was HUGE, enough to feed me breakfast for three days! We also ordered the Crispy Garlic Chicken plate, which was also tender and delicious. Can't wait to go here when the weather is warmer to have shaved ice!

Google
I finally had a chance to try their shave ice and I was actually excited about it but the final product didn't meet the expectations I had, at this place you will not get that fine powdery, snow-like ice texture you get at most of the shave ice places in the Islands, their texture is more of a mexican raspado ( snow cone) bigger pieces of ice, their flavors had a decent taste, sucks to say this but I left disappointed 😞.

Google
don't care what anyone says, if ur from hawaii this is the closest thing to a taste of home you can get. also, the portions are huge, cheeheeeee! some fo lunch some fo dinna bu!!

Google
Diamond Head deli by Morning Wood… I got an invigorating Kona coffee… garlic shrimp were strong but diluted with lemon and rice, it was nice. #rice #hawaii #hawaiianfood #masubi #shavedice #sanbrunocalifornia #diamondheaddeli I couldn’t eat everything so I will have to come back for the poke and the pork belly and the chicken special…. This place is in a tiny strip mall with barbers and a acupuncture place. Next time. Maybe.

Great food!!! Charming people!! It's a fun market /small restaurant. I literally picked up the bag with the food in it and dropped way down it was so heavy. Ate 21/2 times. Really great flavor. I will go back. It's a cute market the tables to eat at are clean but not fancy. Whole place is clean though

Google
At first glance the prices look somewhat high, but the portions are huge. Items are family style- every dish I've had there is at least three adult sized servings, which brings the price per person considerably lower. The quality of the food is unbeatable: everything is prepared with care and plated thoughtfully. I ordered the chicken katsu (I think it's called the Aloha Katsu or Aloha Chicken) and instead of plopping the cutlet slices, with their sublimely crispy outsides, into the zesty curry sauce where they'd get soggy during the drive home, they shingled them next to the rice so only a portion of the chicken was immersed in the sauce to soften. I know it's a little thing, but I love chicken katsu curry and the contrast between the crispy outside and the tender chicken inside is an essential part of what makes the dish really good, and theirs is exceptionally goodd. With Diamond Head General Store, it's the thoughtful details that make the food stand out, and they've clearly put a lot of thought into their food.

Yelp
Wow! Stepped into a hidden gem! Store with Hawaiian stuff like Zippy's frozen food, guava jelly, Hawaii bags, Aloha Shoyu, Li Hing Mui, Hawaiian candies and so much more! Prices: Fair Food ONO! Tried the breakfast and it had three Portuguese sausage and three spam as well as two scoops rice w/furikake and a tasty sweet toast. Cabbage at bottom. Daughter had chili garlic plate with rice & Mac salad. She said it was good. Staff told her that it wasn't going to be on menu in March. (Unsure reason) Ample seating and excellent staff, super friendly and knowledgeable about food & items for sale. Went there about 10:30am ish and place was packed. Still had seating at back counter by windows but someone was leaving so got table. Felt like Ohana sitting next to everyone. Tables & chairs close to each other. Place was clean. Next to Blendistry Barber Shop. Love this place, def FIVE STARS and will be back often!

Yelp
what a find in south city! walked in and you're greeted by the calm hawaiian music, familiar snacks and goodies, and of course, large-portioned, delicious hawaiian food. * i recommend the mochiko chicken-- crispy, flavorful chicken with rice and mac salad, or loco moco (unfortunately doesn't come with mac salad but is still delicious!) appreciate the big portions to make it shareable with friends. * to save time, order ahead on their website via IG I wish you hours were more flexible to enjoy for dinner after work but it's a treat on a weekday off to get a yummy fix from here for lunch!

Yelp
Came here to pick up some snacks before I head home. All is delicious. I just had a little complaint about the spam musubi. Rice was soggy and the spam was not fried, like it was just cut up and wrapped. But the rice was more of a turn off then that spam.

Yelp
Food was amazing! The loco moco was delicious and huge! Was only able to eat half of it in a seating and took the rest home. This place tricks you because it looks like a grocery store but it also serves up delicious food. The workers were kind and super thoughtful and knowledgeable about the menu. I loved the vibe of the place. And will definitely come back again. And bring my family who loves onigiri and masubi. And just good food in general.

Yelp
Great Hawaiian! Plates are expensive, but they are more than enough food for a regular, hungry person. We did the meatloaf/burger loco moco and the spicy garlic fried chicken. Both were great! The chicken was crispy, even after getting dipped in a chili sauce. Loads of garlic chips. Tasty mac salad. If I could go back, I'd ask to switch for more mac! Nice gravy on the moco. And, the patty had a really nice crust from the flat top. Two eggs, but I was real disappointed that a yolk was broken and overcooked. The yolk mixing with gravy over rice is one of my favorite parts of the dish, and I missed it. I was less excited about the musubis. Heavy, dense rice. Takahashi in San Mateo remains the gold standard. But overall, still good! Thanks for a nice lunch!

Yelp
So glad we found this hole in the wall. The food is SO good and the plates are massive. Tons of options for musubis and shave ice. Parking is difficult, so plan accordingly. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Came here with a friend for lunch on a Sunday. Can easily be missed along El Camino Real as it is tucked in a small corner next to a car shop. Upon entering, there are tables to the left along with bar-style seating along the windows. Ahead of you are aisles of snacks and food items from Hawaii. Off to the right is where you order with a couple of large menus on TV screens. Shared the Japataters. Well-seasoned crispy fries with kewpie mayo along with some other sweet-like sauce, furikake and fish flakes. I got the Loco Moco with the meatloaf patty. My friend got the Katsu Curry plate. The Loco Moco was packed with flavor. The beef patty itself was like a frisbee with weight. Well-seasoned along with the rice. The gravy was plentiful and well-seasoned as well. The Katsu Curry had a nice fry to it. The curry was thick in consistency, but also packed with flavor. The portions here are gigantic. One plate can easily feed 2 people and probably have leftovers still. Safe to say, the container and plastic bag will be used to take food home. The cashier was really patient and nice. Even gave us time to check out their selection of drinks off to the side. Can get packed inside, but otherwise, it's fast flowing. Would definitely come back and try out the other options on their menu.

Yelp
Great no frills spot with big portions and delicious food! Came in on the weekend and got the Fried Mochiko Chicken and Kalua Pork and Cabbage plates. The portions were huge and all the food reminded me of Hawaii. The chicken was my favorite, well seasoned and fried to perfection. And my partner loved the Kalua Pork, very tender. The portions were huge, we left with tons of leftovers and will definitely be back to try more on the menu! The weekends can get a little busy, so be sure to get there a tad earlier to be the rush.

Yelp
Fried Mochiko Chicken Plate -- delicious and fresh, with very generous servings. The chicken was so crispy and light, salted with the right amount. There is salad under the rice and chicken. The macaroni salad had black pepper in it which added a nice kick to it. A really good quality dish. They have a small parking lot, you can find surrounding parking spots nearby on the street. While waiting for your order you can shop for hawaiian snacks and drinks. You pay at the same register for the food and the grocery items.

Yelp
I think it's safe to say I've found my favorite fried chicken spot. I'm honestly kicking myself for not trying this place sooner! Their mochiko chicken was perfect--crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. It was so good that I found myself craving it again the very next day. The shop has such a charming vibe, too--it gave me a little taste of Hawaii with all the Hawaiian snacks and decor. If you're a fan of fried chicken or Hawaiian flavors, this spot is an absolute must-try. I can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
What an awesome hole in the wall! As soon as I stepped in, I was transported back to Hawaii, especially with the Hawaiian music playing. Besides their menu items, they offer onigiri, large musubi, and stuffed inari. They automatically packed the lunch plates to-go, but we ate at the tables inside. The portions were massive! I'd say each plate was at least 2 portions, so I definitely had leftovers. The luau katsu curry was hearty and delicious. The chicken was juicy and tender, and the panko was perfectly crispy. The Japanese curry was darker than I'm used to but super tasty. The fried mochiko chicken had a fluffy batter and was covered in a sweet sauce. I really liked the mac salad too. The spam musubi with eel and avocado was pretty straightforward. I definitely recommend this little slice of Hawaii!

Yelp
If you like authentic Hawaiian food, this is your place. Food: my husband had the loco moco and thought it was amazing. I had macaroni salad, which was fine. I also had some kimchi, which was also fine. Portions are very generous. If you don't love Hawaiian food, this will not be the place for you. Ambience: feels like places we've been to in Hawaii. Set up like a small store, where you order at the counter, and there's a handful of tables and chairs where you can eat. Very clean, nice, and organized. There's a small parking lot and a fair amount of parking on the street. Probably more of a 4 1/2 but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Yelp
We decided to try this joint out because we heard about it on Check Please! Bay Area. It definitely did not disappoint. There are also many cool little snacks that you can buy here that are from Hawaii. I felt like we were transplanted into Hawaii for the moment. For our lunch, we ordered a poke bowl and the katsu curry. The quantity also did not disappoint. When we first received the food it was like carrying a bag of bricks. The taste of the poke itself was on the saltier side but was good with the rice. The cut and freshness was good. The taste of the katsu was good too. I liked that it was really hot temperature-wise as well. With the two of us, we could not finish the two meals that we ordered. We were able to bring it home for another round. Next time, I think we should just order one meal and share it so we won't have to bring home any leftovers. The average cost per person came out to be about $36 a person (though we did also order a bag of rice cracker snacks). Now, if you also consider that we actually had another meal off this, you can divide by that total by another 2. So, the new adjusted cost per person is actually about $18 per meal. That isn't too bad right? But also note that the poke bowl itself was pretty pricy, it was $30. Next time, I think we will try something else. Maybe the garlic shrimp perhaps? However, we would optimize and just order only one meal for two. But definitely I highly recommend this place. I would also come back again.

Yelp
Love this place limited seating limited parking but well worth it as local foods tons of Japanese and local Hawaiian groceries. Great big musubi to go too.

Yelp
Headed over to pick up some dinner at 4:30 pm which was cutting it close to closing time but the store was still packed with people. We ordered up front and walked around the groceries part of the store, a lot of different Asian and Hawaiian snacks. The environment is very lively and the walls are full of color from the signs for shaved ice flavors to signs. We grabbed our order when they called our name and found a couple of seats near the counter behind the tables. Fried Mochiko Chicken Plate - The portions of meat were so generous. The chicken was so light with a thin crisp layer but juicy on the inside. The sauce mostly sunk to the bottom but it was a little sweet and salty, giving it a nice flavor. Kalua Pork & Cabbage - It was my first time having a more classic Hawaiian dish like this one and it was so good. The pork itself was soft and pulled apart so easily with a rich flavor balanced out with pickled onions that added some freshness. We paid 18 dollars for each plate and from the flavor to the portion sizes, would highly recommend it as it will last you a couple of meals. The shaved ice also seemed like a very popular option so I would want to go back to try one of the many flavors next time!

Yelp
A San Bruno gem!! The authentic Hawaiian made-to-order plate lunches, poke, and assorted spam musubis transports you to the islands instantly. Ambience is nice and casual with great service - you can even order ahead online (link in Instagram). Also had the chance to checkout the little shopping isles while waiting for food where you can buy aloha soy sauce and rice crackers and even bbq marinades. We tried the fried mochiko chicken plate - super tender, decent Mac salad, well-cooked rice - and the chili garlic ahi. Definitely a little pricey but delicious marinade and sizable portion for the cost. The musubis were heavy on the rice but were generous with sauce and flavor! The crab inari was not bad as well - would probably taste fresher if we didn't get it in the last hour of opening. Definitely coming back here to try more of the plate lunches!!
google avatar

Keann H.

Yelp
HUGE portions of such tasty food. I thought the mochiko chicken would be a standard fried chicken, but I was blown away by how flavorful it was from the sweet soy sauce, along with the light and crispy exterior batter. The mac salad was super yummy as well, and the short grain soft and fluffy rice paired perfectly with the chicken. This place gives out huge portions, you could easily share it with someone or have a full second meal for later, which is rare and a lovely thing. This place is also a general store that sells lots of Hawaiian goods, along with a wide selection of musubi and onigiri to grab and go. This place is a must try and I cannot wait to return.

Yelp
Alternative to getting Hawaiian food all the way in Hawaii. Food is REALLY yummy. Loco moco is as good as it can get. Lots of gravy. Signature musabi, my go to is the shrimp tempera. Great vibes and shop to buy Hawaiian snacks!
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
Haven't been inside the store yet myself. But every time my husband brought food home from this place, it's always so good. Just came back from a vacay in Hawaii and we were missing the food. Esp poke. But the food comes to close to the freshness of the raw fish in Hawaii and the fried chicken was soooo good. I've also tried their Musubis and it was great.
google avatar

Mandi F.

Yelp
Good service, big portions but each dish does cost about $20 each, but frier broke down and poke sold out when I swung in to give them a try. I ended up with the loco moco and the inhouse Kahlua pork. The winner for the pork was the pickled onions, I think I'm just not a big fan of sweet pulled pork. The loco moco was good but I wish there was more rice and more gravy. I'd need to order both as separate side dishes to balance the burger patty size. In the end I still want to swing in to try their fried chicken, the rest was decent but not great.
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
very fun store in San Bruno. The parking lot is small but you'll be able to find street parking no problem. Grocery store has a lot of items that you could normally only find in Hawaii. They also have a lot of seating inside and food that you can buy. I got a poke bowl which was market rate and a butter mochi. Even though the poke bowl was market rate I still wasn't expecting it to come out to be $30+. Poke was just ok. There was a lot of fish in the bowl but there was too much sauce so the entire bowl tasted extremely salty. The butter mochi was pretty good. Overall a pretty fun store. Maybe I'd come back to try their other dishes some day.

Yelp
Came on a Friday for lunch around 11:30AM. Managed to get a parking spot outside in the tiny lot. Otherwise, we probably would have parked on El Camino. It was popular, but not crowded. We were able to order, get food with a pretty good turn around time, and easily grabbed a table. Considering it's food and a grocery store, I think the amount of tables and chairs was pretty good. The ambiance is a chill vibe and the place smells like food. They package the food well so you can easily take it to go. The food was flavorful and portions generous. A bit on the salty side, but we kind of expected it considering the items we ordered. The hot food in particular would be great on a cold day. Hoping to come back and try more items as we get into Fall/Winter.

Yelp
Do love me some Hawaiian "local" food and Diamondhead General Store does it soooo right! I arrived early to my accupuncture appointment located in same parking lot. After parking my car in the front parking lot (there is also a larger parking lot with lots of spaces, just BEFORE shop building) I found myself staring straight into Diamondhead G.S. and with half an hour before my appointment. So what do I ? I yelp it of course! :-) Though the outside looks pretty unassuming, just beyond the doors is a plethora of Island treasures! See that my yelp friend AL L gives it a thumbs up. After reading AL and CM Paulo's review I knew what I had to get. With my cousin Ed unable to travel back to the Islands for a bit, I understand the assignment! Bring the Islands to him. Right after my appointment I beeline into DH G.S. and order the furikake mahimahi plate and the meatloaf locomoco. Also threw in an unagi avocado musubi for good measure. While waiting, enjoyed looking at all the Hawaiian treats. In fact, it's one of the largest selections I have seen on the Peninsula. Prices a little elevated still, great to have the convenience and huge selection! The plates were MASSIVE! Could barely carry them. So I was grateful for the huge burly construction workers who opened the door for me. I took this as a sign... They usually know where to go for generous portioned delicious food! When I got to cousin's and sampled for lunch. I kid you not, two plates were more than enough to feed four of us! Locomoco was the biggest I have ever seen! It was visually beautiful. But the real test... taste. It was the best locomoco I have ever tasted! And being from Hawaii, this speaks volumes! Even better, and my favorite, was the mahimahi. Served with an inhouse tartar sauce. Seriously not needed. I just squeezed the lemon juice over mahi and had the absolutely most delicious meal! A little embarrassed to admit it but I cleaned up that mahi after everyone else was finished! So good. Thank you AL for putting this place and the locomoco on the yelp map for me. Thank you Paulo for guiding me to the best fish dish eaten out (my cousin still cooks the best home cooked fish :) Will I be back? Its not cheap but its ohh sooo good. Yep, You betcha will be back...maybe next week !

Yelp
The wife, being born and raised in Hawaii, is always on the lookout for local food. We finally made the trip over frm the Easy Bay to check it out. Only 4 parking spots in the tiny lot so we carefully parked on El Camino. Place was packed on Sat around 2. We got to check out the plate lunches and shave ice people were eating. The plate lunches are huge. They have both groceries and plate lunches. The groceries are pretty expensive so we only got some daikon, a Luau Curry Chicken and a spam musubi. Too far and too expensive to regularly shop here, but we'd come back for the huge plate lunches.

Sa G.

Yelp
One of our favorite places. Delicious food, good portions The luau Katsu Curry is really good
google avatar

Tim Y.

Yelp
This place comes highly recommended. The food was excellent, the portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. I visited this place on a Wednesday at about noon. The place had only a few people. The service was friendly and helpful. The eating area has plenty of space and seats. And I liked how the seats were emeco navy chairs. I will be returning to try out more of their offerings, especially the shaved ice, poke bowls, and tonkatsu.
google avatar

Vans C.

Yelp
This place is great! One-stop shop for all your hawaiian snacks and meals. A bit pricy but huge portions, enough for 3 meals (for me at least). "Luau" Katsu Curry ($19.00) - Thick, robust curry. Katsu was extra deep fried. Mac salad was ok. Too creamy for me. Fried Mochiko Chicken Plate ($18.00) - So much chicken. Crispy and a little sweet. I prefer this chicken on my curry over the katsu. Butter Mochi ($6.00) - Yum! Even the plastic wrap was oily.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
This place offers some of the favorite snacks from the big island and great tasting food. The plates are loaded and could feed two people depending on how hungry you are. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you are given. You can choose from poké bowls to local favorites. The food is fresh and made to order. Indoor seating is offered or take it to go. A variety of cold Hawaiian drinks are offered and many flavors of shaved ice to choose from. It's a small place but has so much to offer. Definitely returning for more.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Talk about a hole in the wall. The "general store" by Morning Wood is definitely a fun little place to check out. The musubi display felt so authentic to the well known musubi spots along Waikiki we all know and love. Portions are huge, come hungry and prepare to share. I grabbed a bag of fresh shrimp chips sprinkled with what I think is Togarashi and furikake. 4 stars only because the candies I got to gift were rock hard so I think they were kinda old.
google avatar

Ronald H.

Yelp
Been wanting to check this place out for a while and so glad I did today! My gf and I both got the mochiko chicken plate. We were pleasantly surprised by the large portion size! Honestly we could've split and still been full. The tender chicken was seasoned, battered, and fried to perfection. Diamond head is for sure my new go to when i'm craving Hawaiian chicken plates! Also the staff was so nice! 11/10 would come back. (Also also no pictures attached bc we dove in right away)

Yelp
Best poke in the area! Reminded me of Hawaii. Portion is crazy large definitely enough to share or be prepared to take leftovers. Toppings are delicious. Sauce was spicy just as I love it. Highly recommend. The store is very cute. Sell a range of Hawaiian products. People are very nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Lesly M.

Yelp
Such a heartwarming well-represented store! Definitely supports Hawaii. Service was on point, allowed us to eat our meals despite being a little over closing time! Food was fresh and hot.

Yelp
I would've never come here were it for the euphoric praise it received on a recent episode of "Check, Please! Bay Area". Having been to Oahu more than once this past year, I have a more than passing familiarity with local grindz, so I knew I'd have a certain expectation coming into a family-run business like this one. I took BART to San Bruno and walked a half-hour, which actually wasn't bad since I had never strolled on San Mateo Avenue in Downtown San Bruno before. Once I walked on El Camino Real, it was a quick walk somewhat hidden in a strip mall until I saw the generic signage. Well-organized shelves of Hawaiian groceries beckoned. However, I came for a local plate lunch, and the Check, Please! episode convinced me to go with the $18 Fried Mochiko Chicken. I didn't say I wanted it to go, but it arrived in a takeout container. Once I opened it, I saw why. I was gobsmacked by the ungodly amount of poultry that was piled in there. It was a lot. I did love the dark succulent thigh meat, and the crispness of the thinly coated panko batter. What I was not a fan of was what made it authentic - the sugar-soy marinade which was just a little too sweet for my taste. The massive poultry spread hid the inevitable scoops of rice and macaroni salad (photo: https://yelp.to/QjZRFKsT8g). I could barely finish a third of it and lugged the rest home. The garlic shrimp and kalua pork & cabbage will likely draw me back and convince Jamie W. to come with me. So would the bags of shrimp chips and butter mochi mix, and ah yes, the shave ice which comes in dozens of flavors. The aloha spirit will move me yet. FOOD - 4 stars...enough chicken for a small village if you don't mind the sweetness AMBIANCE - 4 stars...feels like a shop you'd see on Oahu SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...if you miss Honolulu's drive-ins, come here RELATED - Hungry for Hawaiian? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/38V52G4

Yelp
We take my mom to Kaiser for various appointments on Mondays. I need her to tray to stick to Mondays and I try not to schedule anything else so I can devote that day to her and whatever she needs. Diamond Head is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. This week, she had an appointment where her therapist was only available on Wednesday. I told her that I would take her, but we wouldn't have time to go to Costco. When we arrived at Diamond Head, I saw that they had a tiny parking lot, all of four spaces. The inside space on the left side was empty so I pulled in only to discover a sign at the very front of the space that it was for the barber shop only. I let my passengers out and then carefully backed back onto El Camino Real. That's when I noticed that the parking space just past the driveway had emptied out. Yay, me! For the three of us, we ordered two entrees and a grab & go. Krab Inari - 5 - The tofu pockets were wonderfully flavored and stuffed with rice and imitation krab. Couldn't really taste the rice or the Krab. I didn't like that they are labeled as Crab Inari when it looks very much like fake crab (surimi), but they were very good. Katsu Curry - 5 - She loved this dish and there was certainly plenty of it! These are not tiny portions. The chicken was very tender. The curry flavorful and she had read that there was some taro worked into the curry. I also enjoyed the Macaroni Salad that came with the order. Loco Moco with Meatloaf Patty - 4 - is what I ordered. I usually order my eggs over easy and I don't remember the order taker asking me, but I don't mind sunnyside up either. The gravy was excellent. Too often, restaurant gravy is either bland or way too salty. Not here. Even the rice was good in all of the dishes. They're not using some cheap broken grain rice to save costs. I downgraded one star on this dish because it was closer to a Beef Patty than Meatloaf or Hamburger Patty. I found it to be dense and there didn't seem to be rice or bread being used as a binder. I loved the variety of Hawaiian based products but at the same time, disappointed with the pricing. I'm sure that part of the problem is as a small vendor with limited shelf space, you can't enjoy the discounts that come with large quantity purchases. Even the canned Ice Cappuccino that I bought to drink was $5. Some items on the shelves were not priced. In spite of these minor shortcomings, I want to come back to try other prepared and cooked to ordered foods. For cooked foods, the prices are reasonable, and definitely a good value.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday and there was no line. I ordered the Mochiko chicken and even though it was on the more expensive side ($18), the portions were huge! The chicken was perfectly cooked and the Mochiko batter was heavenly. However, the chicken itself wasn't that great without soy sauce and lacked flavor. The Mac salad was just meh in my opinion as it had a bit too much mayo and I wasn't dying to eat it. The spam musubi was tasty but had a lot of soy sauce and msg as well as having a large amount of rice and not enough spam. Overall, I would give this place a 3.5/5 stars.

Yelp
Very cool spot serving classic Hawaiian food. They have a variety of span musubi options, poke that's market price and rice bowls. I got a spam and unagi musubi for 7.50$. It was delicious. I would come back to try the loco moco.

Yelp
Foods great and service was great. Huge portions so definitely worth the price. Lots of nice snacks inside as well. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Little piece of Hawaii in the San Bruno. Mochiko bbq chicken plate lasts me three meals even though it is a little expensive. It always hits the spot when you are looking for some Hawaiian food. Poke was fresh and reminds me of Hawaii but it was a little pricy because of the "market price". I would stick with the rice plates and masubi. Next time I will be back for the shaved ice. There's also a lot of random Hawaiian goodies in the market that you can pick up on your way to lunch.

Yelp
I'm a bit torn on this review. I really like all the grocery/specialty items that remind you of Hawaii. The decor is cool with little reminders everywhere. But like many have said the prices are high to make this a part of the regular rotation. The portions are big though for the plates. The butter mochi at $6 was very disappointing. I'm not sure if it was from the day before but there wasn't much of the known mochi texture. Tasted more like a cake. The bbq chicken plate was good with 3 slabs of well flavored chicken. But the mac salad was salty. I never have had salty Mac salad, usually it's too sweet. The garlic shrimp was good but can't justify paying $5 per shrimp when the plate comes with 5 big shrimp. The flavors were there but again Mac salad was salty. Order at the counter and wait for your food. The food did take awhile but I guess it is made to order. Next time, might try some other items. Tiny parking lot in front of and street parking

Yelp
Busy on a Saturday lunch time but the staff was very nice! Seems like since kuma nori closed down the owner will bring some of the dishes to this location, will see how it is in the future!

Yelp
Diamond Head General store literally makes you feel like you're in Hawaii! The food is amazing as well as the service. We ordered the mochi friend chicken which was more than filling for two people, tuna onigri, spam and uni musubi and shaved ice! Definitely get that! Haha The place has so many unique things that reminded us of Hawaii and just in general things that we love like brownie mochi and lilikoi pancakes! This place is a definitely 5 stars!!

Yelp
I came across this place when I was looking for shave ice. We had a great experience our first time in. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon so we thought not many people would be out. Diamond Head General store was bustling! It's a tiny spot, if you blink then you'll miss it driving down el Camino. The inside has seating for eating. Three aisles of groceries and a deli style counter. There was only one party in line, but almost all the tables were full. We got our food to go. We got shave ice, two spam musubi, a loco moco plate, and a kalua pork plate. Everything was delicious and the portions were large. The Mac salad was better than some Mac salads I had in Hawaii. However the shave ice was not. It will hit the spot if you're having a craving, but it doesn't match Jojo's or Ululanis or most Hawaiian shave ice. The ice was a little too flakey and not enough syrup. We will definitely be coming back and bringing friends for the food!

Yelp
Fabulous Hawaiian-haole fare with some slight upscale touches (pickled onions & scallions) garnishing their impressively portioned entrees. arrived post-lunch/near closing/late afternoon-ish and required a few minutes to take in the menu, as it was my 1st time here. saw the Check, Please! episode that featured this place and immediately bookmarked it for a future visit, completely brain-farted on which were the featured meals but came away surprised and belly-full. opted for the poutine fries slathered with the pork lau lau as an add-on and my homey (whom i treated) chose the bbq chicken. we dined there and while waiting on the food, perused about and noticed all the types of spam meats and other Hawaiian goods available on the shelves. the poutine fries were indulgent, hearty from the cheese-gravy combo, smoky from the lau lau with an over easy egg on top and clung to my ribs for the rest of the day while my friend enjoyed his somewhat basic yet still tasty offering. the portions were so massive that even whatever was leftover in my take home container was enough for dinner that evening. there's also plenty of choices in terms of beverages that included canned juices, teas, sodas and energy drinks. this is the type of place worth repeated visits and is word of mouth-worthy.

Yelp
Love the casual vibe and all the Hawaiian snacks and treats that you can buy. When I went in the afternoon, a lot of people were enjoying their shaved ice. I picked up a few items to go to eat for dinner. The loco moco was solid as was the chicken, though the rice was little mushy (maybe just a bad batch) Portions are large. The parking lot is really small, so you will probably have to park on the street.

Yelp
Well I don't understand why a place that doesn't serve you asks for a tip when it is basically giving you the food in a bag to go. Tipping should not be pushed when we are already paying for taxes. Basically a drive thru but you can't because the place is cramped. Getting water in a little sauce cup for maybe what is meant for soy sauce?

Yelp
After seeing it being reviewed on Check, Please! Bay Area and the good reviews from the panelists, I had it on my to-try list. Since I'm on the other side of the Bay and don't get to this area often, I was anxious to try especially when several friends tried and gave it the thumbs up. So on a recent Saturday, three friends and I were at an event at the Cow Palace and decided to come here for lunch. Arriving around 1pm, there were no spaces in their small lot in front, but we were lucky to get a space in the street in front. The store has display shelves of mainly Island products. There's a table of musubis, inari and onigiris. Checking out the menu monitors, there's entrees of Island favorites and specialties, poke bowls, and starters/snacks. I like loco mocos and ordered one with meatloaf patty. You can get it with kalua pork or mochiko chicken. After ordering, park yourself at one of the tables or window counter and wait for your number to be called to pick up your order. The food is served in a takeout container. The loco moco had a large patty over a bed of white rice and brown gravy and it's topped with two sunny side fried eggs and pickled radish pieces. It was a large tasty loco moco. Patty was moist. I was full and had to take a third of it home. A friend got the loco moco with Mochiko chicken and he said he preferred the meatloaf patty since the chicken was not crispy with the gravy. Friend that got the hamburger steak enjoyed it. For those craving shave ice, they have that on their menu too. Glad there's a local place that serves the Island goodies that satisfies my cravings of Island favorites until I get back to paradise. If you have the cravings, check this place out.

Yelp
SUMMARY: Probably a 3.5 in my opinion, but for the serving size and concept, maybe, a 4? I'm originally from Hawaii and this spot gives me all the nostalgia, from the musubi bar, to the large lunch plate portions, to the local Hawaii music playing. How can I not like this place? MOCHIKO CHICKEN PLATE Today, I was craving mochiko chicken, so I decided to head to Diamond Head General Store. I probably had their mochiko chicken 3 times before, but the previous time left much to be desired (the chicken was bland). However, today's mochiko chicken plate lunch was FIRE. It was light, tender, crunchy, and so, so TASTY. One plate ($18) easily fed me and my partner, and we still had some left over. I'm not the biggest fan of their mac salad; it's a little watery, noodles too soft, and lacks flavor. But overall, a solid plate lunch with a HUGE portion of mochiko chicken. GROCERY I love that they have a bunch of Hawaii and Asian grocery and snack items. But, you could really get at least half of the items from Pacific Market that's a few miles down El Camino. I understand markup is necessary and covers the costs of i staining and carrying the items, but it's very hard for me to buy a $9 bag of arare/mochi crunch. Nevertheless, I do appreciate they make grocery items available (oh hello there, Zippy's chili).

Yelp
Huge portions!! The prices are kind of expensive but once you see the portions it is worth it. Great tasting Hawaiian food that you don't have to go far for. Highly recommend stopping by if you are craving some Hawaiian food.

Yelp
Good food but wait is kinda long. The pickled onions was actually pretty good with the dishes. They also have grab and go musubi with a variety of choices. A few rows of tables and a bar area to eat here and a bunch of Hawaii groceries that's priced on the high side.
