The Best Restaurants in Newark, New Jersey | Eater NY

"Opened in 1958 in Newark’s North Ward, an historic Italian enclave, and now in its third generation of family ownership, Dickie Dee’s is a solid spot for Italian subs and pizza — but it’s best known for its Newark-style “Italian hot dog.” In a state with a strong hot dog culture, this is one worth seeking out. Picture a pocketed bread slathered with mustard and ketchup and crammed with a hot dog (or dogs) from another longtime Newark family business, Best’s Provisions, and sauteed onions and peppers, then topped with a mound of fried potatoes. That’s good eating." - Hank Zona

Google
I went To Dickie Dee's with my buddies today. In our younger years Dickie Dee's and Jimmy Buffs was a staple to our eating habits today I had the combo, sauge and hotdog. It was very good. Bread , hot dog, sausage onions, all perfectly cooked. But I didn't like the peppers as much. They were not deep fried like the onions and tasted alittle vinegary, like out of a jar. But all in all the sandwich was 👍 good.

Google
Great Hometown locally owned place in the city, food is always great..The pizza is good and the Loaded Hotdogs even better, you won’t be disappointed

Google
Must go!! Get the Italian dog!! Had the Italian hot dog pizza with half sausage Italian hot dog toppings. The hot dog part of the pizza is one of a kind.

Google
I had a great experience at Dickie Dee's. Been scouting for Scary Good Eats and this place is on everyone's list. I was told to try the Pizza as well and was pleasantly surprised. Had a lot of flavor, really wanted another slice, but was there for the Italian Hot Dog which delivered as advertised. I will definitely be going back.

Google
A relic of a different time. Old school cash only place serving up unique takes on classic New Jersey lunch. The double dog all the way is the way to go. They take a pizza dough picket line the bottom with mustard, throw 2 hotdogs in there, top it with peppers, onions, and fried potatoes and top with ketchup. This thing is unlike anything you’ll ever have but so familiar of your childhood. Fairly priced, but make sure to ask for extra napkins because this is messy. You’ll also need some tums for later. But the inside is nostalgic of the old pizza places that used to be all over this state and are slowly dwindling. I love this place on more levels than one

Google
Home of the classic Italian Hot Dog, Dickie Dee’s is a Newark staple. I would order the single or double Italian hot dog (hot dog in pizza bread with peppers, onions, and fried potato wedges with ketchup/mustard). The pizza is good, too. Come prepared with your order and cash.

Google
This was a place my father brought me to when I was a little kid and having pizza and Italian hot dogs in one spot is the best. I do have to say the hot dogs did taste better when I was younger. I feel like maybe they changed something but they're still good. Highly recommend especially if you're going to stop by cherry blossom Park. There's nothing like an Italian hot dog with peppers and potatoes

Google
My experience at Dickie Dees was very good and the fact that I live nearby and haven’t been is crazy. So I went for lunch. Dickie Dees is known for there Italian Hot Dog which is a hot dog on pizza bread with ketchup, mustard, onions, peppers and fried potatoes. It was very good but messy make sure you get a knife and a fork. I wish they had more hot dog meat because all I tasted was fried potatoes which is my I ate this with a fork. The service was good and the prices are reasonable I would definitely come back.

Yelp
A classic! Dickie Dee's is on many lists of the best Italian hot dogs in New Jersey for a reason. They have been open since 1958 and not much has changed since then. The hot dogs are well seasoned and have an appropriate crunch when you bite into them. The fried pepper and onions have the proper flavors to accompany the potatoes and the roll. The staff is friendly and efficient. Cash only

Yelp
A classic and old school Newark. Been going for decades and will continue to go as long as I live in the area. In fact, if/when I move, whenever I come back to visit Dickie Dee's will be on the visit list. Pictured here is a Double Combo w out mustard and ketchup. All I can say is IYKYK

Yelp
There's just no pretty way to indulge in this classic Italian hotdog. Double with the works. My childhood favorite junk food. ***cash only***

Yelp
service, ambience and food was phenomenal. absolute classic spot in NJ. A must go to. The sausage and peppers sandwich is top notch. The CHEESESTEAKS are on another level. Highly recommend.

Mister M.

Yelp
Some days you just need to go old school. This classic eatery is just that and more. Stop in before a Devils game for a quick and delicious bite. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Picked up a client at Newark Liberty for DennisBernard.com, business. Drove over to my old neighborhood and stopped in for lunch at Dickey Dee's on Bloomfield Ave, Newark. the double dog with mustard on the bottom, potatoes , onions, peppers and ketchup on the top was at major hit for my guest and exactly like the thousands I eat there over a lifetime. I was sorry I didn't get to see Ricky but enjoyed my visit as always. I highly recommend Dicky Dee's!!!
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
Been going for years. No better. I get the combo with everything. Their potatoes are the best I sometimes just get an extra bag to go. But whether it is hot dog sausage or the combo can not beat for the Italian version with potatoes onions and peppers mustard inside and ketchup outside. Go you will thank me later. And say hi to Rick !
google avatar

Dorette P.

Yelp
I ordered a single Italian sausage with onions ,peppers, and potatoes. I haven't had food from Dickie Dee's in over 20 years. It was just as I remembered. Very good
google avatar

Donye A.

Yelp
Order a double Italian hotdog for my mom and I and a single Italian hotdog for my daughter. They had quite a crowd but the line moved quickly to place your order and they cooked it fresh after you placed your order. For ambiance, there wasn't a lot of space inside and all the seats were occupied due to how busy they were. But you can see them cooking your food too which is nice. I ended up just eating it in the car because it smelled too good to wait till I got home. Lol. Will definitely have this again.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was definitely one of those spots you send someone to if they are visiting NJ. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the dog cause I was starving haha it was pretty unique though that's for sure but not bad! The pizza was surprisingly good though! Cash only and don't be on your phone in line or you'll loose a spot for not paying attention!
google avatar

Sonia G.

Yelp
If you like Italian sausage or hot dog stuffed with potatoes on a pocket bread with the choice of your condiments this is your place. Haven't tried the pizza in years but I know people who get both. They have small parking lot enough to fit maybe 6 -8 cars. They do cold and hot sandwiches as well.

Yelp
I was told by a good buddy who grew up in Newark (amongst many other people) that the Italian Dog from Dickee Dee's was something I needed to have as soon as possible. Like an idiot I waited months before getting out there to Newark to check it out, but I'm so happy I did. This Italian Dog was massive, and on home baked bread from the bakery across the street that is legendary. The bread was firm but not hard and stood up to this massive and messy sandwich perfectly. The potatoes, onions, and peppers had such great flavor and with the dog and that awesome bread it was just outstanding. Had some of the kids with me so wanted to grab them a pie also. I took a bite from the front and a piece of the crust from one of them just so I knew. The pizza was also very good. Cheese to sauce ratio was nice, good flavor, a decent char on the bottom of the pie, and the crust wasn't too doughy. I'll for sure be back in here at some point...this was a great way to spend a few bucks and put myself in an epic food coma. Dickee Dee's in Newark, NJ - Didn't Suck!

Victor V.

Yelp
One of the best Italian Hot Dog Places in NJ. They are located in the heart of the Italian section of Newark, NJ and have a great reputation.

Yelp
What can be said about this brick city institution that hasn't already been said. If you live anywhere near Dickie Dee's you've stepped inside numerous times. While the signage outside might have changed, the heart, soul, and guts of this establishment remains untarnished. No frills, no bells and whistles. Just a good old Italian hotdog served however you liked it. My first time here was probably over 20 years ago and not much has changed (which is a good thing). I never had anything here other than the Italian hot dog. Some day I might lol. But I'm glad to report that they still do things true to memory. If you haven't been, go now. ENJOY!!!
google avatar

Denisse M.

Yelp
Had to come try the famous Italian hotdog from Dickie Dees. Very filling meal for under $10. Loved it. Only thing I would change-cube the potatoes a bit smaller. Otherwise, great sandwich!
google avatar

Raven O.

Yelp
The food was just ok. The portion size was amazing! You get a lot of food for the price. But the flavor was just ok. Good but nothing to rave about.

Andrea M.

Yelp
So I went here last night for two slices and an Italian sausage for later! I'm pleased to say that Dickie Dee's has stood the test of time!!! The buttery bread and savory sausage with the thick external crisp potatoes with the soft inner texture was the same as I remembered from my childhood! The pizza was packed with diced flavorful sausage and the pepperoni covered another slice. To say the least...The quality hasn't changed! This and Casa Di Pizza, was our Friday pizza spot from the 70's-90's. I can't believe I have been away this long :-(, Well..., No worries! Not only am I back to stay, I can't wait to introduce my adult children to a little piece of my childhood!!! Congratulations Dickie Dee's for not only being consistent but also remaining the Best in Town!!!! See u soon!!!

G Z.

Yelp
Been going here for years and nothing has changed and that's a good thing. Good Italian hot dog and nice staff. Seating is fine, but keep in mind, it's cash only.

Yelp
Tried DD's for lunch today for the first time after hearing the locals raving about it. I'm not much of a hotdog eater anymore and try to only eat it sparingly but figured I'd give DD's a try since it's been around for so long. Location: it is on the corner of Bloomfield avenue and another street with an American flag waving on top of the store. It is also across the street from a bright green building. Parking: DD's has a small lot in the park ( about 10 cars can fit) It's a bit awkward especially when coming out since you might have to reserve our into a 1 way street. But convenient if you can't find parking during street cleaning days. Food: I for a single ( $5) and it was basically bread , potatoes with veggie and hotdog with all the toppings. The potato's were surprisingly flavorful. Other: The inside is not big, but there's plenty of seating. Most people from what I saw took their orders to go. They do have a bathroom, I didn't get to visit it but I was told it's a little inconspicuous. All in all, if you're in the area and looking to eat from a historic spot for cheap, this is the place for you.

Sanorah G.

Yelp
I just ordered from this restaurant & while eating my sandwich I pulled a piece of paper out my mouth. I then proceeded to open my sandwich to find the paper that is on the burger patty before you cook them still on my burger! I instantly called and reported this issue to them ! The response was "oo okay" as if me eating paper wasn't an issue ! I will never eat from this place again ! Please ppl Check your food before eating !!

Yelp
Ok, I used to come here 30 years ago and the place is still as I remembered. I have been talking about this place for ever and even tried replicating their famous Italian hot dogs but my efforts were in vane. I finally made it back and I am happier than a pig is sh*t.

Valerie S.

Yelp
Great place but the new guy on the grill needs to go or pay a little more mind since I'm not the only person who has gotten paper in their food.
google avatar

Yelp
What is there to say about Dickie Dee's that hasn't been said? This place is an established "hole in the wall" for a reason. Don't have any doubts, just go and try it out. My absolute go to: double dog with the works, add salt and pepper. Just a heads up, it's cash only. There's an ATM in the building, but if you want to avoid a fee, plan ahead.
google avatar

Vee C.

Yelp
I used to go there all the time when I lived in Newark. Now most people know Dicky's for their Italian Hot Dogs ( get the double dog). But the pizza there was so good. Now the owner sold it @late 1990s and I was concerned. But the food stayed consistently great. I miss going there. I now live in Phillipsburg and nobody can touch this pizza or the Italian Hot Dogs either. And Jimmy Buffs was not the first Italian Hot Dog. And they moved out of Newark.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
I've seen families torn asunder over Dickie Dee's vs. Jimmy Buff's when it comes to Italian hot dogs. (Okay, I'm fibbing. Just really wanted to use the word 'asunder' in at least one of my Yelp reviews.) Scrabble 'Bingo word' aside... I think Dee's is the better of the two. (But maybe it's not a fair comparison since I went with their 'combo' with a mix of hot dog and sausage that gave them an unfair advantage?) Proteins - grilled to perfection, packed with a lot of flavor (and the 'double' is no joke) Peppers, onions and potatoes - great abundant ratio, tasted great Pizza bread - why isn't this as ubiquitous as a Kaiser or Italian roll?! It really elevates whatever you stuff inside of it. I'm not really a fan of ketchup and mustard but forgot to mention I didn't want it on my sandwich and you know what? It was great even with them included. (And how can you not love a place with the nerve to offer a 'potato sandwich' - that's so perfect it's kind of ridiculous.) One of my kids got their pizza - and that was no joke and inexpensive. Other kid tried their burger and thought it was fine.

Yelp
I cant believe that I have not reviews this place yet! This is the place! Dickie Dee's is a NJ institution. Up until I met my wife, I didn't know deep fried hot dogs were a thing, let alone an Italian hot dog. If you want the best one, don't go to Jimmy Buffs, come here. Everyone comes here for the deep fried hot dog on a bun with deep fried taters topped with onions and peppers. Personally, I'm not the biggest pepper person, but to each their own. Their cheesesteak is also fantastic. One of our favorite things to get is a potato plate with ketchup on top! Its like fries, but sooooo much better. I am a native NYer, so we know our pizza.... I can say that they have some pretty amazing pizza here! I get it with extra cheese, hot dogs, cheesesteak, and onions. OMG wowsers! If you go here, I highly recommend that. Don't forget a choco drink. Inside is an old school pizzeria with furniture built into the floor! It is very very very VERY dated inside, but that just adds to the charm of the place. I've never had a bad meal here. They are all super greasy, but delicious. All in all, a classic old school pizzeria with great food! What makes them stand out from the rest is they make the best Italian hot dogs. Get a triple!!

Yelp
Wow. Just wow. My boss grew up in this area in the 1970s and had been talking about DD's, so I decided to give it a try. Although the sign says "Dickie Dee's Pizza," it's infamous for its Italian style hot dogs. Everything on the menu looks great - Italian style hot dogs, sausages, cheesesteaks. You can get a double or a single of the hot dog or sausage. I chose to get a single sausage sandwich - comes with the works. Sausage, pepper, onions and potatoes. GOOD potatoes with crispy edges and well seasoned peppers/onions. The allstar is the pizza bread they serve it on. I can't even describe it. It's just so good. You have to go here.

Yelp
Great little true Jersey hot dog joint! Not many places like this historic Italian Hot Dog place around anymore. Old school. Cash only. This is the real deal. Experience it for yourself.
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Old school Newark hole in the wall. Came here at the recommendation of some long time Newark locals. Never had an Italian hot dog before and was told this was the original. I ordered the double and it was really good. I wasn't aware they put mustard it so next time I'll ask for it without. I would definitely go back.

Mike R.

Yelp
Great Italian Dog and great price. A full meal in one bun. (Double dog even better lol)

Anthony M.

Yelp
I went by with my family and it's safe to say we were amazed. The service was great, but the food was even better. It left nothing to be desired and was all delicious. Everything on the menu is delicious and you really can't go wrong.
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
Legit Italian Hot Dog none of the fancy stuff made the same for half a century always on our list of must visits in NJ. Quite fond of the double sausage bread is excellent, double fried potato among the worlds best; peppers and onion always perfect. If you want a Italian Dog nobody does it better. Neighborhood ain't perfect but plenty safe in daytime.
google avatar

Kenia G.

Yelp
Terrible terrible customer service. Placed an order and order was completely incorrect. Called the store to advise of error made. I was told by the jerk who answered that the order was NOT placed with them, that I'm mistaken because they're about to close and then proceeded to hang up on me. Absolutely horrible attitude. Word of advice: Customers always right (in this case? Absolutely true) If you made an error fine, just own up to it. And don't be so nasty and rude to a paying and long time customer. As of today, I will no longer eat or order from this joint Cheese fries. Invisible cheese fries for an autistic kid who proceeded to have a melt down. Thanks DICKie dees for living up to your name. No really....thanks
google avatar

Jim N.

Yelp
The best of a rare breed. I've only EVER had the Italian Hot Dog here and will probably never order anything else. Also, the guys here have that loud, friendly, wisecracking manner that is VERY old school Newark North Ward. This is THE place.
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
If you like Italian hot dogs this is the place to go. Not a big fan myself but like to partake in occasion. Been here a few times with a colleague who is a big Italian hot dog fan and he says they are the best. Mine was pretty good.
google avatar

Luis R.

Yelp
The dogs are still banging. Haven't had one in 20 years but no wonder they are still here. Solid dog, with plenty of carbs. Just the way I remember it and like it. Still relatively affordable, $5.00 for a dog and a coke. Can't knock them. This is a cultural icon just like JJ's is down the street.

J B.

Yelp
One of the best Italian hot dogs in the business, a mainstay in North newark, lov it
google avatar

Julio G.

Yelp
Classic Newark Stop. Grease truck style food, Indoors! - the most famous thing to get here would be hotdog with potatoes. They place two dogs with fried whole potatoes inside a large fresh bun. delicious! Don't forget to get ketchup and mustard! The $7 pizza isn't bad either! Enjoy your visit! *please vote below if you enjoyed the review*
google avatar

Serhiy K.

Yelp
Decided to venture out and take a drive to try a classic in the north ward of Newark. Heard a lot about this place and the Italian Hot Dog in general. Needless to say, it did not live up to the hype. While I'll give it to them that the dogs tasted pretty good, the rest of the sandwich was terrible. There's way too much bread and fried potatoes that make the sandwich very dry. The peppers and onions really did not add anything to the sandwich either. I would pass on getting it again. The customer service also sucks. Got there and stood around while the guys behind the counter were talking amongst each other. Took about 5 minutes to even get acknowledged and asked what I was going to order.

Yelp
After almost 10 YEARS of being a New Jersey resident, I FINALLY ate my FIRST "Italian Hot Dog"; when I first heard this name, I was confused. Nothing about the ingredients seemed terribly Italian. Coming from Bensonhurst Brooklyn and Staten Island for the rest of my prior life here on the planet, I had never even heard of this concoction... I decided if I was to try an Italian hot dog, I may as well go where many NJ natives will argue, is the best: Dickie Dee's. And what an excellent decision that was. The verdict: the Italian Hot Dog made famous at Dickie Dee's, it's simply amazing. A deep fried hot dog with fresh potato wedges, crisp, golden brown and tender inside are placed in a soft bed of a half loaf of round Italian bread, with sweet sauteed peppers and onions, and in my order, an Italian sausage as well- this one is called "the Combo". They layer it with mustard on the bottom and ketchup up top- to have it this way, it's called "all the way" or with "the works". Thanks to the Yelpers who helped me find my New Jersey original meal today, I will surely come back again and try more from this Newark institution. 10-16-2012, came back for a double sausage this time...so good!
google avatar

Luigi C.

Yelp
awesome!!!! Sausage and hot dog combo; with everything single !! WITH A YOO HOO! Delicious!

Cizzor 5.

Yelp
The food was horrible. It was stale and undercooked. My hotdog was cold and freezing. The quality of the pizza was horrible the cheese fell off and it was so hot. It was so greasy that the grease fell on my shirt.

Yelp
Classic spot that I grew up on n after every baseball game (that we WON) as a kid playing in the Branchbook diamonds. Today I got a double that is blessed and stuffed with 2 hotdogs, onions, peppers and potatoes. Same great taste and FEELING as I got back in da 90s as a kid. Glad although that times have changed, some classics still remain! This is a must try spot.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Old school Italian luncheonette. Dogs and sausage deep fried placed on what they call a pizza roll along with peppers, onions, and believe it or not - potatoes. Pizza by the slice as well. About as casual as one can get. Great grub at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
No frills and good food. That's what you come here for. Prices were good, as were the portions. I had a single sausage with peppers onions and potatoes and it was definitely enough! Everything from the bread the sandwich was stuffed in (pizza bread) to the sausage was delicious. There is a reason this place is a cult favorite. I would definitely come back and try others on the menu.

Yelp
#AfterWeLawyerWeEat! #FirstTimerAlert. Dickie Dee's, Bloomfield Avenue, Newark. Classic Italian Pizzeria. Hasn't Changed a Bit. $7.95 for a 16' Cheese Pizza. Yea, ONE DOLLAR A SLICE. Plus, I had to have an Italian Dog All the Way - Ketchup, Mustard, Kraut, and Potatoes on Italian Bread. With a Couple of Grape Sodas! #MajorLeagueGrubbin #NomNomNom

Katrina C.

Yelp
I ordered an Italian Cheeseburger. It was Ok. The cashier was very suspicious of me. I didn't know that this was a Cash Only spot. They have an ATM machine in the restaurant. I used the machine and I took out $20-two ten dollar bills. I went to the cashier and I said, I want to pay for my food. He repeated my order, and said $17.85. I gave him the two ten dollar bills. He gave me $2.15 in change. I waited for my food while he served other customers. I looked at the cashier and said what happened? He said did I get your payment? I said yes, I gave you two ten dollar bills from the ATM machine. He said oh ok I'm just asking. He started serving other customers food that arrived after me again. I began getting angry. Finally he said, here's your food. It was clear that this cashier didn't believe that I paid for my food. First of all, get a debit/credit machine and an updated cash register so that we can get a receipt. Then you would know if I paid or not. It was INSULTING for the cashier to hold my food back because he thought that I had not paid for my food. I didn't enjoy my Italian Cheeseburger. My friend enjoyed his chicken cheesesteak. The restaurant is small and outdated. The customer service was poor. Overall, it's just ok. I don't recommend it.

Tony F.

Yelp
I got off on the wrong stop and decided to drop in. The Double Dog was great and I've honestly never had a sandwich quite like it. It's like a philly style sandwich with fried potatoes on top. It's a whole meal that's easy to carry. Definitely worth it. Being cash though! No plastic.

Yelp
Dropped in at Dickie Dee's the other day to finally try one of their Italian Style sausages. WOW, this thing was massive. It was put in a huge roll with mustard, fried onions, peppers, FRIED POTATOES, and then topped off with ketchup. I didn't know how I'd feel about topping a sausage with all of that, but it tasted fantastic. I couldn't finish the thing, but it all clocked in at about $6.00 with my drink. The most surprising part to me was the potatoes. I figured that it would all end up feeling very dry and bland when you tossed them on top, but they were really tasty. The guys behind the counter were nice and the place itself has a very old school vibe with the autographed pics of local celebrities on the wall. I'd definitely go back.
