13 Classic Restaurants That Define Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Dick’s is the defining fast food chain of Western Washington the way In-N-Out defines Southern California. It’s been a local favorite for 70 years because the food has stayed simple, affordable, satisfying, and fast — order a Deluxe at the window (two patties with a pickle-y special sauce) and it’s foil-wrapped in your hands seconds later. The secret here is that the workers are incredibly efficient; they get pay and benefits that busts all those underpaid fry jockey stereotypes — the starting hourly rate is $22, and employees can get access to things like money toward tuition and childcare assistance." - Harry Cheadle

"In 1954, three friends set out to simply "serve fresh, high quality food at low prices with instant service." Bank executives warned they'd never turn a profit selling 100percent beef burgers for 19 cents, but the drive-through was a runaway hit. Among its many honors, this Seattle institution wasvoted America's Most Life-Changing Burger by Esquire readers. Swing by one of its six locations—marked by iconic orange signs harking back to the atomic age—for a meaty epiphany, alongwith hand-cut fries and freshly whipped shakes. Best of all: Dick's offers worker scholarships and even insures part-time employees. So you can feel good about the indulgence!"

An Oral History of the Food Behind Seattle’s ’90s Grunge Scene | Eater

"A classic late-night drive-in (opened in 1955) beloved by music fans for staying open until the bars closed; it was the go-to quick pit stop for affordable comfort food, especially hand-cut fries with tartar sauce, and remains a packed, revered Saturday-night ritual where shakes and burgers are also popular splurges." - Bruce Pavitt

Google
My friend from Washington took me here and I left very happy. Great burger. I liked the seasoning salt in it. Fun joint. Definitely a place with a fun vibe that you can crash at after an event. We luckily beat the traffic-just as we got sour food a big line formed. They get your food to you lightning fast. It was very impressive. I had the felled burger, fries, and a root beer float. It was all great.

Collin Reid

Google
Lightning fast service and top notch burgers at a reasonable price! Don’t let lines scare you: they move super fast. We went during a pride event and even though there were huge lines, it took us less than 20 minutes and we got our food the second we paid. The got the deluxes and I got a coffee, and the burgers are good at the first bite, but it’s the aftertaste that’s best. Most surprisingly, the par coffee paired so well with the burger that it became exceptional. Highly recommend for a traditional genuine and affordable Seattle experience!

Google
Dick's Hamburger The prices are pretty good, but you have to pay extra for ketchup, etc., for the fries. Speaking of fries, they're good! Fried with skin and a brownish color—none of those pale, light-colored fries. The hamburger taste fresh but it's very avg. Nothing to write or tell about.

Alan C

Google
What a great dive! This is a walk-up or drive-thru only place! There is a stainless steel standing table for like 8 people if you eat your order there. But don't expect anything else for seating or a table. That said, you can't beat the price and taste! The buns were buttered and toasted to a perfect crispy toasty goodness to compliment the cheap burger it is holding. The fries are Crispy and has the skin on! Which is yummy! The milkshakes are thick and sweet! Definitely will be coming back again and again!

Google
Got the deluxe burger and it was really good. Beef was juicy and the chopped pickles made it even better. The fries were a little disappointing. I usually like soggy fries, but these were kinda floppy and needed more salt. Still better than In N Out fries though. Service was fast. There are actually three order lines. The middle one is usually the shortest, but there’s a pillar so it’s easy to miss. They’ve got a little spot to stand and eat if you don’t want to eat in your car.

Maria Stoimenova

Google
Had to try this local staple. Very simple menu. Very affordable, but you have to pay for any condiments or extras. Solid burger and homemade fries that are not as crispy as the fast food chains ,but seem more natural and not pre- blanched or frozen. It was a cold evening very long line that moved very fast, and a delightful street musician made our experience very pleasant and authentic. Did not try the ice cream or shakes because of the cold weather, will try during summer!

Google
Dick's Drive In....Broadway St. in downtown Seattle. One fun, crazy place where you can see any and every kind of person in line at the burger stand. The service was very fast and friendly, the burgers are tasty, the chocolate shakes were very good. It's definitely an old school vibe that will take you back a few decades to better times. If you're in the Seattle area, it's worth the stop.

Google
Fries were fresh; milkshake was good! The cashier I received wasn’t the best but the overall service of the others were good. Wait time for food was good and quick. Milk shakes took some extra time but was good. I went in the evening so parking was bad; foot traffic is much easier to get in and out

Mallory M.

Yelp
Food is good and I would definitely eat again, but the staff is very rude! I asked if a bun could be removed from a burger for an allergen and the worker rolled his eyes and said no. That is fine, but the attitude is uncalled for. While taking our order, the cashier has to repeatedly ask us to repeat the order because he was messing around with other workers. After we repeated ourself for a third time for one of the drinks, he said "You need to talk to me through the window and quit talking through the glass." Rude and uncalled for. Maybe the customer service is this way to match the name...

Yelp
Cheap, dependable, and a staple of Seattle. Never been during the wee hours of the night, but both times I visited this during off-peak hours were quite empty. Friendly staff and security posted up. Cap Hill location definitely gets rowdier during weekend nights. Don't expect the world's greatest burger, but do expect to get your cheap and greasy meal itch scratched.

Yelp
Landed in Seattle after midnight, and needed some quick grub with my friends. This place came through. Open late and shockingly empty when we arrived, which meant no lines and instant satisfaction. The menu is super wallet-friendly - a whole meal is under ~$12, which feels rare these days. But don't let the price fool you: burgers, fries and shakes all hit the spot. Simple, classic, and tasty for a cheap meal. If you're looking for a fast, affordable bite after hours, this place absolutely delivers.
google avatar

Yelp
A solid, cheap little burger chain that's serving up STELLAR shakes (seriously the vanilla shake is heavenly), good little burgers, and homemade fries. There is nothing fancy about Dicks. But it doesn't claim to be. They do a few things really well done. And do it quickly. There's a ton of people here getting food for a reason. Cheap eats done well. I'm glad my Seattle local friend said we had to stop by!
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
A Seattle classic. I lived behind this location for close to a decade. I've easily eaten thousands of their burgers and I would eat a thousand more. They are the perfect ratio of meat to bun and well priced. They also treat their employees extremely well with competitive pay and benefits including tuition. This is the type of local business people should be supporting.
google avatar

Shao-Lon Y.

Yelp
My hot take is that Dick's is better than In-N-Out. This Dick's is a prime location for a late night snack after a night of drinking or clubbing. If you're coming here, you know what you're getting yourself into. The place is a bit sketchy but the food is still good and the service is fast.
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
This was our first stop in Seattle as the internet swore it was the best place to go, unfortunately it was all hype for us. The service and food were both just okay. But dare i say they are def better than in n out
google avatar

Bill N.

Yelp
What is it that makes this place iconic? I have had better tasting food elsewhere. There was nothing good or even remotely iconic about this place. If you are standing by these undercooked limp oily fries and the tartar sauce burger then you're clearly doing something special to market yourself as iconic. I cannot believe people stood in long lines waiting for this mess of a meal.
google avatar

Jeron W.

Yelp
My friend and I were craving a burger and him being the local, he suggested Dick's. I was a little taken aback that there was no seating, but that's totally fair considering a deluxe burger was less than $6. For that $6, you get a loaded double patty burger, which looks a hell lot better than what I've gotten from McDonald's.
google avatar

Mindi J.

Yelp
Closest thing to In and Out. Hot and fresh. Delicious. Fast paced but staff is still friendly.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Dick's burger in WA is like In&Out in CA, it's a stable, decent, and cheap place to go for college kids. You either like them a lot or you don't. Personally, I don't like the burger but when you're ran out of money and hungry, this would be the place for me to go when I moved to Seattle decades ago...I like they shake and fries a lot. Now i introduced to my kid when we visited Seattle and he likes it too (behind In&Out of course). Always lines here, since college campus is nearby and its fast service, you ordered and they get the foods and give it to you right away, unless it ran out...sure you have to pay xtra for small stuff but it less then a dollar and the prices are fairly still cheap after all. Always stop by for a fries and shake when I visit, it's a must!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down worst burger I've had in my life. I got the deluxe It smelled so awful like rotten meat. I couldn't even finish it, it was just trashed. Fries were super burnt, tasted like cigarette ashes. The only thing that was good was their milkshake. Never going back, don't waste your money.

Yelp
I heard that Dick's was Seattle's version of In-N-Out so I had to check it out. I went for the first time last year when I was visiting Seattle and really loved it for the quality, service, and price point. The burger is pretty simple and I used to compare it to McDonald's and similar chains due to the price point, and in comparison to those chains, Dick's was significantly better. I'm usually not a fan of pickles but because they chop it up here and put it with a sauce, it actually enhanced the taste of the burger for me. The quality of the meat is also good as well. Another thing that I love is how Dick's is open really late and how quick the service here is. My major gripe with Dick's now is that when I came back to Seattle this year, I noticed that the prices for everything went up significantly and is more in line with the price of an In-N-Out burger. Although Dick's is enjoyable, I don't think it comes anywhere close to In-N-Out in terms of taste and quality and I don't think that the price justifies what you're getting anymore. While I unfortunately used to love coming here, I'd say that it's a pass for me now given the prices.

Yelp
Fast, cheap, and plenty tasty. What more could you want from a walkup fast-food burger stand? No wonder it's a Seattle staple!
google avatar

Marcelino R.

Yelp
Simple burger place but pretty good! Menu isn't very big. Fast service and friendly faces. Small Outside eating area. I enjoyed the fries and the double patty burger with their signature sauce. It's also pretty cheap, so won't break the bank.
google avatar

Sisomvang S.

Yelp
We are Californians visiting and my friend brought us to Dick's because it is a staple in Seattle and equivalent to In N Out. This is my consensus: It is definitely not in and out. In N Out is better in my opinion. I've never had Foster Freeze, but my husband has and compares it to it. I love In Out burger's taste. Dick's burgers are pre-made and we don't like lettuce in our burgers, but you can't take them out. The burger was a little sweet for my liking. We laughed about the sugar tax for the sodas. Service was fast and friendly. It's not a drive through. Ambiance was cool. It's a drive in experience and you walk up and order. Fries- I worked at Five Guys for two years and we always either get potatoes from Idaho or Washington and I always preferred Washington fries to Idaho fries and these fries are equivalent to Five Guys Fries from Washington. I also got a shake and it was good. Overall, my husband enjoyed it, but it's not somewhere where I am dying to return.
google avatar

Danica L.

Yelp
It was okay. Just very convenient because of their late night hours. I wasn't a fan of their burgers.
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
Its Dicks, nothing amazing but fast cheap food that is convenient, consistent and always hot. Good team and always security. Enjoy eating that bag of Dicks at the bar or head to Cal Anderson and relax. Enjoy yourself a hot bag of Seattle Dicks

Yelp
TLDR: Checks the box for overhyped, good fries, okay burger, overly sweet shakes. Ended up eating a second dinner elsewhere out of dissatisfaction. - - - - - - My Seattle friends hailed Dick's Drive-In as the In-N-Out equivalent, but I've found it quite different. I didn't quite see a drive-thru, but there was ample parking for quick bites (20 min) in their small lot. I ordered a deluxe with fries and a strawberry shake. The first thing I noticed was how quick order pickup was - literally instant, er within 10 seconds. The deluxe was a classic burger - by no means bad - dominated with flavors of cheese and mustard. The bun was a classic hamburger bun with no frills; overall, it felt like eating a plain hamburger drowned in cheese and mustard - meh. The fries were nice, though there was a 20 cent cost for sauce. I went with the tartar which also had a slight mustard-y taste. The fries were a limp texture but clean and had a slightly crip texture. They were not the largest portions but a nice snack. The strawberry shake, unfortunately, was over the top sweet and had to be tossed. If there was a way to drink strawberry flavored heavy cream with spoonfuls of sugar, this might be it.

Ivan J.

Yelp
Would not allow me to take off the mayo on my burger when I am allergic. "No substitutions" was all I was told.
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
Sorry, I know this is a Seattle staple, but I don't get it. The best part was their fries! The burgers have no special sauce so it feels like I can make a better burger at home for faster. It's cheap, great! LOL. Paying extra for ketchup also feels crazy; Would rather go to McDonalds. The service is fine, ambiance is fine, feels like it should - a burger joint. There's so many better burgers in Seattle, the money you save isn't worth it.
google avatar

Rashid M.

Yelp
The burger here was pretty good. I had the Dick's Special. I normally leave out the pickle when I order a burger and I didn't know that the special comes with a pickle relish, but the burger ended up being better than I expected. The Root Beer Float was very good.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
I knew I had to try Dick's when in the area and it absolutely did not disappoint. I love that it's open late and honestly, it's the perfect stop for late night food. We ordered a vanilla shake, vanilla butterscotch sundae, with a burger and fries. I never see butterscotch anywhere so this was quite a treat! Absolutely delicious,
google avatar

Yelp
Ambience. C Service. A Food. D Price. C Having lived in Seattle 38 years ...never understood the HYPE!!! Hmm DICK's Burger Day est. 1954 $.19 opening day prices My opinion... One of the WORST place for burgers and fries! I've tried them 3 separate decades and still bleh. Why there are lengthy lines for this 70+ year institution boggles my mind. You either love them VS. you either hate them. Service is friendly and great today at 3 pm. Line wasn't as long and three windows were open. So waiting wasn't long to order or get food. Server was nice to let me order HOT fries with out salt. This would be your place if you like 1/8 lukewarm meat patty on plain grilled bun (ketchup cost $.30 more) and sometime HOT fresh cut fried mushy limp greasy string fries. Two more days for trying their burger for 1954 opening prices at $.19 !!!... Unfortunately, I am NOT a FaN!!!
google avatar

Frank K.

Yelp
For the sake of nostalgia we stopped here to have a burger and a strawberry shake. Unfortunately, nostalgia only goes so far. The burger was pretty boring and the shake was too sweet.
google avatar

Derek V.

Yelp
Convenient, cheap, & easy, Dick's Drive-In is a great place to stop for a quick lunch or perhaps a late night snack after a night of drinking with friends! It's not often you get a hamburger, fries, and milkshake for under $13 -- and it's not like they substitute quality for their speed. Like, yeah, it's not going to be the best burger you've ever had, but unless you're actively looking to be disappointed, you should enjoy the meal just fine. The staff was perfectly polite and very proficient, making sure the line moved smoothly and efficiently.
google avatar

Belldandy O.

Yelp
My friends and I were out late on Wednesday, but needed something quick and cheap for a late night bite! We planned on going to the location in Queen Anne, but decided it would be too busy and drove over to Capitol Hill! It was a lot busier than I thought for a weeknight, but the lines went by fast thankfully! Got my Dick's Deluxe Burger as soon as I paid for it!
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
We came here because it was late and we had drinks so of course we needed greasy food. A friend told me this place is better than In-N-Out so I had to try it. Verdict is, it's a pretty good rival. The bun is softer than a double double and the meat was pretty similar. What's different is the sauce and that's all about preference. I liked it but some in our group didn't. The fries are better than In-N-Out because those fries are awful so that's not hard. I also got a vanilla shake. Pretty good but it's hard to mess up a vanilla shake. The only downside is that they're a little rude or short which could be because they're dealing with mostly drunk people that hour. But all in all, a great spot for a late night burger.
google avatar

Shannon R.

Yelp
Basic burgers, fries, shakes and sodas. Simple but delicious! Never hurts when nearby to grab a bag of dicks!
google avatar

Willy T.

Yelp
When I visited Seattle from out of state, I took the opportunity to try the local burger joint. It's honestly nothing special but still a solid burger and a very solid price. The patty reminds me of Burger King, but this burger is way better. As a Californian, I still like In-N-Out more but I'm still a fan.

Anita T.

Yelp
Food cheap and taste very good. Customer Service was excellent and employees were very friendly and knowledgeable of items listed on Dick's menu. I highly recommend this restaurant to visitors and I will definitely revisit this place
google avatar

Justin H.

Yelp
To me this feels like Washington's in'n'out coming from someone who grew up in LA. The food was good and the service was great. It has a great 50s diner and drive in vibe. Definitely a place to visit when visiting washington as long as you get tartar sauce. If you don't it's not nearly as good.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
Went to Dicks to grab dinner last night. We are new to the neighborhood and we're excited to check this place out! Service was just okay, the guy was meh. We ordered a couple of Deluxe Cheeseburgers, fries and Cokes. It was all yummy and for a good price too! I recommend this place if you are looking for a good burger place that doesn't drain your wallet!

Robert C.

Yelp
Oof! A miss every time. What happened? It used to be good, and you could count on them!! Those days are behind and what you will get it the taste of ketchup and very aged burgers and fries, even if they are busy somehow nothing is even close to fresh. They prepare everything into oblivion, so get there early and you are eating a rock hard heat lamped lump of hard bread and boiled ketchup. The fries are mush. Get there during a rush and you are still being handed rock hard nonsense somehow. Absolutely garbage, its just a faint memory and nostalgia. Bye bye dick.
google avatar

Luis M.

Yelp
Let me start by saying it's no In-N-Out. The burger was decent, but nothing special. I'm annoyed that you can't customize or swap out condiments--seriously, who doesn't let you tweak a burger? And charging extra for ketchup? That's ridiculous, come on. The fries were average at best--soggy and disappointing. I don't get why people line up for this. It's way overhyped. The ambiance is hipster, with a side of fent.
google avatar

Karina R.

Yelp
The burgers here are really good, if you're looking for a quick reliable burger spot then this is it ! Only down side if you've never eaten at this little chain before like I haven't prior is that you can customize your burger, everything is as is. But it's kind of a good thing it makes the service faster. Would definitely go back for a savory reliable burger
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
As a California Native, I'm pretty much a die-hard In-N-Out fan, but I was willing to try Dick's in order to experience what the people of Seattle knew and loved. I knew going into it that it would be disappointing, yet somehow it still subceeded all my expectations for what a burger should be. It's not even in the same league as what In-N-Out is in California. Cheap burgers, but they charge extra for each of the sauces or add-ons. Not very satisfying to eat as they're small, lukewarm, and the quality of ingredients are subpar; At the same price you get a much better deal at McDonalds, which is saying a lot. No indoor dining area, and maybe only like 5 menu items: four variations of the same burger, and fries. The fries look a dark brown, almost burnt color, yet are soggy. The only plus side is that you get the burger immediately.
google avatar

Elizabeth J.

Yelp
Delicious traditional burger and fries. Limited offerings and small portions but tasty, traditional, old school flavor. You walk up to order, it's not a drive-in but does have the same retro vibe. I ordered a special with ketchup and mustard on the side and some fries. I could've eaten 2 but it was delicious.
google avatar

Luis V.

Yelp
This will have to be the biggest foodie adventure let down from my Seattle visit. Let me start off by saying the cashiers are super nice and chill. They answered my questions in such a nice and patient manner. There have been many websites and youtube videos stating that this burger joint was a must to visit in Seattle. I ordered the Dick's deluxe, and was super unimpressed. It's sad to say, but I'd take a McDonald's burger over this burger and honestly......McDonald's is at the bottom of the barrel for burger places I'd get a burger from. Everything in the burger just tasted like poor quality ingredients. Fries were super soggy, under seasoned, and sad looking. Louie gives Dick's Drive-In a 2 star for great service but terrible food. If you are visiting from another state, you will be more than okay skipping this foodie spot.
google avatar

Christine W.

Yelp
Great burgers at fantastic prices! Not as good as Five Guys but way more worth the price. I got a small lemonade, which was what I wanted most. The deluxe burger was fine, the fries were really good!
google avatar

Fallon H.

Yelp
i feel like if you're traveling to seattle, you have to try it at least once. it's iconic after all. my favorite thing about this place is the price, i got three burgers, two sides of ketchup and a milkshake for 10 dollars. in terms of food quality, it was equivalent to a mcdonald's cheeseburger. and you really cannot customize the items even just to take things off, which i can't understand. the menu is small and the line to order takes forever. if i lived here i'd probably be a frequent customer just based on price alone.
google avatar

Arthur T.

Yelp
A Seattle staple! Got 1 special, 2 cheeseburgers, and 1 fry. I still prefer the cheeseburgers since I'm not the biggest fan of their sauce they use in their special. Downside, I did notice the fries got a lot less. Tight parking in the area, especially when it gets late at night for some munchies.

Eric B.

Yelp
This place reminds me of the story of the original burger chain we all know. Walk up, get your food immediately, and eat it. Simple, yet beautiful. I can't say it's anything outstanding, but you definitely get exactly what you expect. Highly recommend if you're hungry and in the area.
google avatar

Hugh A.

Yelp
Okay you just can't beat the prices. It's quick, cheap, and fast you literally can't complain. My only hot take is that in n out is still better. Sorry to whom that may offend.
google avatar

Brenton U.

Yelp
First stop when we got off the plane and Dicks didn't disappoint. We just wanted a quick bite before heading home. The burgers were good for the price, patty reminded me of a McDonald's patty but the sauce they use is next level. The service was great and we got our food within minutes of ordering. The fries were ok, they are made with fresh potatoes but aren't crisp at all. The shake however was awesome! Super thick and creamy. I got the vanilla and it did not disappoint. If you're in need a quick late night bite this is the place!
google avatar

Cardin N.

Yelp
One of my favorite burger chains out there. Simple flavorful burgers and fries! The service is always exceptional since I know the staff are compensated well and there is even tuition reimbursement as well. There aren't a ton of space for eating there but it's very simple burgers that can be eating while standing up!
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
After months having moved here, I finally tried the infamous late night Dick's. I won't lie - I had a great meal. But 11pm meals always hit different. For the price, it's amazing (relative to everywhere else). I enjoyed my burger and shake. It's nothing crazy special, but it does hit the spot. I'm from CA and controversial opinion but I don't think In-n-Out is that amazing. I actually think I enjoyed Dick's more. The reason for a 4 is because their fries were a bit subpar - not the most flavorful or crispy (unlike McDonald's on a good day). Still good late at night though! 4 cause fries don't lie
google avatar

Ally C.

Yelp
A Seattle staple for sure! Dick's is pretty mid, but somehow it's a must in Seattle. Especially when it's open until 2am. With the lack of fast food in Seattle, Dick's can satisfy the craving. Everything is super cheap but you get what you pay for. The fries are kinda soggy and plain. The burger was okay. The milkshakes are pretty good though. A must after a night out in cap hill.
google avatar

Sharon T.

Yelp
Dick's Drive-In feels like a very old-school classic fast-food burger joint. There are several ordering windows that guests can line up at and they move pretty quickly. We tried the Deluxe Burger, the Special Burger, and an order of fries. A note on pricing: condiments cost extra, and there's a sugar tax applied to the sodas. The Deluxe burger comes with cheese and two burger patties whereas the Special burger has a single patty. I was a bit disappointed with Special. The patty was pretty dry and there wasn't too much flavor. I did really like the bun though, it was soft and yummy, and probably my favorite part of the burger. The Deluxe burger was much better. The two patties were more flavorful and juicier than the Special.
