I created this account specifically to praise this bar. Diddy's makes an essential part of a tour of the East End and surrounding areas. You can hardly appreciate the place without spending at least 15 minutes in here, and you'll probably want to stay longer.
The cocktails and mocktails are hard to beat even with the anachronistically low prices, and the service is refreshingly human and honest. You'll often see the green-haired owner Diddy herself behind the bar, mixing drinks quickly while managing the rest of the bar. She and the rest of the staff that sometimes take her place aren't forcing their smiles. If they're not busy or you don't insult them, they'll playfully talk to you almost as a friend would, even if you're just passing through as I once did. You won't forget them or any regulars who show up.
If you're lucky, you may get to enjoy a generous slice of homemade banana bread for £2. If not, try the crisps and chocolate bars, and take home some spice-infused cooking oil. If you're not hungry but want to decorate or read, there's candles and indie magazines.
The bar virtually transforms if you become a regular as I have. You'll soon find yourself in the middle of many vibrant characters, the same cheap prices, and days and nights bouncing between hours of calm and high-energy parties. It's part bar, part club, part community centre. Every day has something different, yet you'll still get the full experience and warmth, even if like me you usually only want some iced water.
The aesthetics normally blend the now traditional flat and saturated pastel much loved by nearby middle class families with the urban grit which Hackney was known for during the 2000s. The carefully curated music selection amplifies this: grime and R&B most days, and more laid-back music (including jazz) on Sundays.
Unless there's a party on like on some weekend evenings and nights, you will usually find an empty table or seat here instantly, even when most of the regulars are here. Lastly, do ask to go downstairs to see the bar's open secret: a glittery pink basement with cushions, colourful lights and a giant teddy bear.
